Boingo

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Danny Elfman has written soundtracks (Batman et al.) for the last decade, so it's no surprise he's ditched the hyperkinetic pop of the Oingo Boingo era for more mature, long-form epics in reviving his old band. Most people will run screaming from Elfman's intensity and dense wordplay, but the emotional depths plumbed by tracks like "Can't See" (Useless) and the 16-minute fever dream "Changes" ensure cult acclaim. --Jeff Bateman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko UK Import : BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-12

Just bought this 2 CD import item. Was it costly? Sure: approx. $25. BUT, given that I nearly paid $20 for the US version which DOES NOT include the first CD, it was well worth it.
Delivery: SURPRISINGLY SUPER-FAST by USPS (it only took two or three days standard shipping)
Condition: Still wrapped in plastic.
Music: *tee hee* If you watched the movie, then you know what the music will sound like: it's the movie soundtrack (you know, the awesome soundtrack that both reminds the viewer of the 80's and also creates a haunting backdrop for the movie's themes). Typically here in the US that means only one or two of the good songs and the rest is the score. The UK version? ALL of the good songs and the entire score (that's why it's 2 discs).
Bad part? Not offered in US retail stores (i.e. you can only buy this online or in an Import CD store.

It's here, two versions of Mad World by Michael Andrews, lovely piano intro and Neil Young type vocals. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars It took 'em long enough, but it was worth the wait!.......2006-11-06

My friends and I have been waiting for this for years--finally, the real 80's music soundtrack for Donnie Darko, arguably one of the best soundtracks out there!

Probably the only negative comment I have is that they included the music from the motivational videos, something that I could have done without.

Thank you for putting this soundtrack out!!

4 out of 5 stars Donhnie Darko Import Soundtrack well done.......2006-08-24

The import edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack is two discs. One is the actual pop songs, and some classical works, which are all very good and includes the remake of Tears for Fears "Mad World." The second disc is the instrumental score, with two versions of "Mad World," included as well. The instrumental score is very dark and omenous, and the two disc set is a nice collectible piece of music that I highly reccommend. The price is a bit high, at over $30, but if you are any type of a fan of the movie, or a soundtrack collector, this album is for you.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-08-10

i wish i could have bought just disc one... because disc two is mostly the instrumental stuff, which is excellent, but i don't really plan on listening to it over and over. disc one is good, although there are a few songs i skip through.

Before he wrote half the soundtracks in the world (Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas) Danny Elfman led himself an eccentric little rock band called Oingo Boingo. Actually they weren't so little; in fact, the eight-man band boasted one of rock's finest horn sections in addition to Elfman's devilishly good, often humorous songs. Dead Man's Party is Boingo's finest hour, melding their whacked-out mix of XTC, Frank Zappa, and Tower of Power with a genuine pop sensibility. Elfman is in perfect vocal form here, leading the combo through their biggest hit, "Weird Science" (which put Elfman on the soundtrack path) as well as Boingo chestnuts "Fool's Paradise" and the infectious, macabre title track. --Michael Ruby

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Uber good album!.......2007-06-05

This album intorduced me to Oingo Boingo even though I was a huge Danny Elfamn fan before I ever heard them. The first song I was introduced to was Weird Science. I loved it so much I looked up the artist and was shocked to see that Danny Elfman used to sing in a band. This was the first OB album I ever got and it's spectacular. This is a great album to start anyone off with OB. It's upbeat and songs such as Dead Man's Party and No One LIves Forever give a refreshing take on death with jumpy tunes that make you just want to dance. I listen to it all the time. When people ask about OB you cant put them into any specific category because it depends on the song. Some are more ska some are more punk but like I said: THIS IS AN UBER GOOD ALBUM! STRONGLY RECOMMEND.

5 out of 5 stars Oingo Boingo.......2006-08-10

The CD was all I expected. I have enjoyed listening to it many times now.

4 out of 5 stars Hooray for Oingo Boingo!.......2006-03-07

This is a great CD to get into Oingo's sound, as it's more appealing to a general audience and fun to dance to. The songs are all fun and catchy, but I don't get why Dead Man's Party became one of the more popular ones. It's okay, but there's nothing ultra amazing about it.

No One Lives Forever is a great song...Danny Elfman is so fun to listen to! It's a good album to own..I mean, come on! It's less than 10 dollars, and it's classic!

4 out of 5 stars good halloween cd.......2005-10-29

Dead mans party is a cool halloween song. This album is my favorite boingo cd.

4 out of 5 stars Halloween Dance Party 101.......2005-10-15

Anyone who listened to the radio in the 80s (or even now) or went out dancing or...whatever...you will recognize "Dead Man's Party." I think it's strange that that song (Track 2) became so well-known. They have more generally accepted-sounding songs, and many more "exciting" ones. For a long time I considered this my least favorite Boingo album, as "Weird Science" is by far my least favorite Boingo song. Although I can't help but like it...

With a definite sort of "Southwest U.S. Dancing Skeleton" feeling (sorry, that's not really a great description...), this album bridged a change of style for Boingo between their edgier sounds and the softer ideas expressed in "Boi-Ngo."

This album is definitely worth a straight listen, though. Whoever compiled the tracks was very clever. Some sort of story arc is made musically that really shows through from beginning to end. It's like watching a movie that changed drastically from beginning to end but manages to do so with such grace that you don't even notice.

Although not my favorite Boingo album, Track 4 "No One Lives Forever" is one of favorite Boingo songs. Give it a listen!

5 out of 5 stars Where Do I Start?.......2006-03-07

How do I even start? This is one of Oingo Boingo's best. It's classic!

The layering of instruments is really awesome. What You See has so many turns it takes a while to get sick of it.

The lyrics are really clever...I'm assuming Danny Elfman wrote them. They're dripping with sarcasm, dry comments on people in our society...awesome! It takes a real genius to turn a subject like pedophiles into a song that makes you smile and tap your foot.

Speaking of pedophiles, "Little Girls" deserves its own paragraphs. It opens up the album. The first time I heard this song I was like, "this is so awful!". The lyrics were just so...yikes. But at the same time I was having way too much fun listening to it. After awhile you begin to think, "how can you NOT love this song?".

Finally, Danny Elfman is unbelievably fun to listen to. He just might be my favorite singer. The vocals in "What You See" are fantastic. His voice can go from sounding tender to demonic in a few seconds, and he's so expressive.

I think I've listened to nothing but Oingo Boingo for about two weeks now. This CD is a complete earworm! It wriggles into your skull and camps out. Don't worry, you won't mind at all! It's nasty, it's controversial, it's funny, it's a good time!

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANCE!.......2005-10-16

My very first impressions of Oingo Boingo came from songs like "Little Girls," "Only a Lad," and especially "Nasty Habits." I think this album, however, is one you have to be in the mood for to really appreciate. Usually Danny Elfman's music can put me in the mood, but this one is very much a single style, which is very 50s rock sounding, albeit new wave 80s at the same time. I think "Perfect System" (Track 2) is one of the most overlooked of Boingo's stuff that ought to have more attention. In the same vein is "Controller," both based on sort of crazy political ideas - reeks of "Manchurian Candidate" which I wouldn't put past Elfman, as he really likes the literary stuff ("Wake Up (It's 1984)," "No Spill Blood").

No one will forget the opening song, "Little Girls," the absolutely outrageous gleefulness in Elfman's vocals is just a wonderful portrayal (as well as quite sarcastic) of a pedophile. Something that's not a really common topic in music even nowadays. "Nasty Habits," forgetting to put the covers over his head, Elfman quite sarcastically says that "nasty habits I must condone." That song alone is very reminiscent of his vocals for Jack Skellington in "The Nightmare Before Christmas," so if you like that, listen to "Nasty Habits." It will get you in the mood for the pouring out of a world of Elfman.

Many reviews say that the rest of Boingo's material is not nearly as good as "Only a Lad," lacking in the edgy sarcastic lyricism or missing the new wave mark that so many fell in love with. But I think they only got better and better, or at least they changed a lot and just remained good the whole time, I don't know which.

If you like "Only a Lad," I definitely suggest "Nothing to Fear" and "Good For Your Soul" - and check out the rest of Danny's music! He's a genius with flaming red hair and a strange obsession with skeleton artwork.

5 out of 5 stars No better way to start a legend. .......2004-12-02

Only A Lad is the second full album of Danny's that I bought, a couple of months after I first became a Boingoloid. At that point, I had already begun to realize that the Boingo fandom is quite unlike any other band-- the music is wilder than anything ever heard on the radio, the fans more devoted than even the most nutcase juggalos, and the pure insanity of Elfo is... well, otherwordly. To say the least.

This album is Boingo's first departure from the madness of the Mystic Knights, and Danny's attempt at starting a full-fledged rock band. After nine years of frog suits and fire-eating, Elfo dropped the Gong Show chaos and decided to go mainstream. The results are, no matter how you look at it, nothing short of incredible.

Only A Lad contains some of Boingo's most solid songs-- starting off with the brilliantly offensive LITTLE GIRLS, ending with delicious trademark sound NASTY HABITS, and in between giving us anything we could possibly ask for. From the famous voice-loops in ON THE OUTSIDE, to dark political commentary in ONLY A LAD, to even a cover of YOU REALLY GOT ME that seems a vast improvement over the sappy Kinks original. And while songs like CAPITALISM and PERFECT SYSTEM are rather redundant, and often re-incarnated in later Elfo albums, they still add to the overall insanity of the album-- and are as brilliant as any other Boingobaby.

Advanced Boingoloids, who know the Farewellian versions of classics such as LITTLE GIRLS and CONTROLLER, will be surprised to hear how crisp and beautiful the original versions sound compared to 1995's raw guitar-fest. Those new to the fandom will find that Only A Lad offers a brilliant and easily accessible view into the mind of a now famous movie composer. It's often said that Boingo isn't for everyone-- but chances are that those people have yet to simply sit down and enjoy 1981's most incredible album released.

It's true that some of Elfo's best songs come much, much later-- Only A Lad does seriously lack an Insanity, a Sweat, a No One Lives Forever. But to counter that, this album has not a single one of the low-quality, boring, filler-type songs that later albums are plagued with: no Cinderella Undercover, no Burn Me Up, and most definitely no Wild Sex. Just plain old solid quality madness is all that's found on Only A Lad, and that's exactly the way it should be.

No matter what kind of Elfman fan you are (or want to become), Only A Lad will always be something to treasure and enjoy. The album is pure love... and pure love is Boingo.

5 stars out of 5.

Being a fan, I enjoy the entire catalogue but I keep returning
to the first three albums. It's the faster pace and energy that seems to appeal to me.Only A Lad, along with Nothing To Fear and
Good For Your Soul are the records I would gladly recommend to
a virgin ear and mind.Danny sings with such mad glee that I find
myself forced to listen and even sometimes think about what he's
actually singing.Little girls?????Nasty habits??????
I love it!!!!!!!!Cheers!!!

5 out of 5 stars A great listen and buy!.......2004-02-27

I think I came to be an Oingo Boingo fan when I heard a little bit of their music on Amazon. I thought they had a great sound! So, I went to my local music store and they didn't have this album, so I put in a special order and I picked it up yesterday and haven't listened to anything else, but this.

Little Girls - 5/5 A great opening song for a great album. I love the horns in the beginning.

Perfect System - 5/5 I love Danny's voice when he starts out this song. And his vocals throughout this song is amazing. This song has a great sound.

On The Outside - 4/5 The guitar in the beginning is great. I like the lyrics and Danny's singing.

Capitalism - 5/5 I love the drums in this one. The song is so great. "There's nothing wrong with capitalism"

You Really Got Me - 5/5 A great 80's cover of a classic song.

Only A Lad - 5/5 One of my four favorite songs on this album. Little Girls and Perfect System being two others.

What You See - 5/5 A great dance song. And, believe me, "What you see is what you get" ;) I think Danny's falsetto is wonderful.

Controller - 5/5 Another great dance song. Another song where Danny sounds great.

Imposter - 5/5 I love the sound of this song. The drums, and oh the guitars!

Nasty Habits - 5/5 This is the fourth to my four favorites off of this album. I love the way this song starts out! And another one where Danny sounds great.

All in all, this album is really worth having. I'm a huge fan of 80's music, so this album is a thrill to have.

4 out of 5 stars Still good after twenty-five years........2007-06-08

OK. Not all the tunes are stellar hits, but the DO all sound good. Oingo Boingo and Danny Elfman/Richard Elfman virtually invented Ska. Unlike so many other inventors; however, they never stopped exploring and creating.

The engineering on this album is amazing. Very clear, very sharp, beautifully edited and mastered. It's a true joy to listen to.

The only reason I didn't give a five is there are better, if only slightly, Oingo Boingo albums.

Danny. We here in L.A. miss your annual Halloween parties.

5 out of 5 stars Fear.......2007-02-16

This is my favorite album from one of my favorite bands. Grey Matter is an outstanding song and I love Private Life. This is a must buy for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Oingo Boingo's best, and a best of the '80s.......2006-01-11

For a short time in the early '80s, Oingo Boingo was right up there with the premier bands of the time. Their infectious grooves, incredible soundscapes and Danny Elfman's wacky vocal stylings dripped with their unique blend of genres infused with a bit of something nobody will ever be able to put their finger on much less duplicate. There just aren't that many bands that can inject so many different sounds into their music without it becoming bloated. With Oingo Boingo, though, every sound has its place and none detract from the overall feel of the music.

If you think you've heard Oingo Boingo but you've never heard this album (or Good For Your Soul), you really haven't heard Oingo Boingo. If you know nothing about Oingo Boingo, start here. This is by and far the best album to start with to get the Oingo Boingo firehose pointed in your face. Good For Your Soul (their next release) is also extremely good, though.

Nothing To Fear is quite possibly one of the best releases of any bands in the 1980s. There just isn't a weak song here. Give it a critical listen. Give it several listens, because it'll be a long time before you get to the point where you listen to it and *don't* hear something you never heard before. It's the gift that keeps on giving; an all-time classic!

4 out of 5 stars Sarcasm and Wild Sex?.......2005-10-15

I'm afraid so - and it's great fun. However, Elfman becomes slightly overexcited to tear down politics and religion, and it comes out just a little forced when you first listen. But I love it all, so, I don't think I really condone that last statement.

Track 1 "Grey Matter" is a great stepping stone from the first Boingo album "Only a Lad" and decidedly one of the best Boingo songs. And one of the most true to life. In fact, I would say I knew the person Danny Elfman wrote this about if she (or he) hadn't been born five or so years after it was released.

Track 3 "Private Life" is definitely one of the best of Boingo. Musically quite solid, and the style and sound feels very unique. Not to mention the fairly simple universality of the lyrics.

And Track 4 "Wild Sex (in the Working Class)" is possibly my favorite Boingo song. If you really pay attention to Elfman's lyrical style, you will realize that sex is not really the point, although in many of his other songs it is only as basic as that. It resonates with the familiarity of "Private Life" and yet maintains a distance for those who are too shallow to look deeper than the beat and the chorus.

And Track 7 "Nothing to Fear (but Fear Itself)" should be just pure entertainment anyone who likes Boingo. But it is one of Danny Elfman's proselyting songs, so humor him for being opinionated, please. Unless you agree... Then just enjoy it, I guess.

4 out of 5 stars A blast from the past for cheap!.......2005-03-27

I bought this for the unbelievably low price of $6.98...only to now find it for $5.99. Six measly bucks for one great album. If you don't jump on this, consider yourself brain-dead.

Now, that out of the way, it's not all wonderful. Reptiles and Samurai gets on my nerves. Same with Insects. But, the rest of the CD is quite enjoyable.

One of my fondest memories is relaxing to Whole Day Off when I was a wee-lad of 16. And who could resist the adrenaline rush of the title track? Same with Wild Sex, Private Life, and the rest of the album.

So, spend the six bucks, you cheap-skate. You won't be disappointed (and if you are, it's only six bucks).

3 out of 5 stars Boi.......2007-02-16

Not a strong album from them. It is still unique in that it is Boingo.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetest o' Boingo.......2005-10-15

"Boi-Ngo" was the second album of Oingo Boingo material I bought. The first was the compilation album "Skeletons in the Closet," which can give one a very specific idea of what Boingo's style is. But when I saw this album in stores and bought it without even thinking about it, I was completely enthralled by how much ground Danny Elfman had covered in style. So my ideas of Boingo are based on this album and "Skeletons in the Closet" mostly, because they were the first ones I ever heard. And the first Boingo song I heard was "We Close Our Eyes" which is Track 5 on this album. It hooked me in the first place, so I have a natural affinity for this particular album. However, of all of Boingo's stuff, this is the "sweetest" sounding, if that makes sense enough. The messages are no heavier or lighter than any of Elfman's earlier songs, like "Grey Matter" or "Only a Lad," but they resonate with more of a charm to them. It's unfortunate that present styles of punk and ska and all that has turned people against the cliche 80s sound that Boingo was one of the manufacturerers of.

Track 7 "My Life" is the sweet part of this deal. It really is one of those songs that yanks my heart strings.

Dance-friendly and usually catchy (although "New Generation" isn't really all that catchy), "Boi-Ngo" offers a very specific sound and feeling that you can't get anywhere else. One of my all-time favorites of Boingo, "Elevator Man" is featured Track 3. Listen if you want to enjoy yourself in this life! And might I suggest you really examine the lyrics and see if you can find the hidden meanings I did.

Last of all, Track 9 "Pain" is probably the most musically appealing on this album, very much the familiar sardonic rock from earlier Boingo, but with a matured style. And a great ending to the album!

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but..........2004-03-19

... but Elfman makes up vocally and lyrically.
Home Again-4.5 out of 5-The only reason I gave this such a great rating is because of the music. The music really sounds good on this song.

Where Do All My Friends Go-4 out of 5-I really love the way this song begins, a capella. Sounds really good. Elfman is a really great singer.

Elevator Man-4.5 out of 5-This one, also, has good music. A good dance song.

New Generation-4 out of 5-This song is good. I really love the chorus. The vocals and the trumpets in it. Great one.

We Close Our Eyes-4.5 out of 5-A suprisingly good song by OB. Really doesn't sound like them, but it's good. I can imagine this song playing over the credits or during a prom scene in an 80's movie.

Not My Slave-4 out of 5-Another good dance song.

My Life-3.5 out of 5-Not my personal favorite off the album(that would be Where Do All My Friends Go), but it's okay.

Outrageous-4 out of 5-Good music. I really like the chorus.

Pain-4 out of 5-Good music. Great vocals by Elfman. The fiddle sounds great.

When I bought this album, I was expecting more from it, because I had gotten Only A Lad first, and was a little disappointed when I listened to it. But, it's still an okay listen.

5 out of 5 stars Oingo Boingo for life!!.......2004-01-15

I've been a huge fan of this unique and wonderfully talented band since the late 80's. My review for this album would read the same for all their albums... BUY IT NOW!!! Spend the money and get everything you can!!!! Oingo Boingo can do no wrong!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best soundtracks around! Awesome!.......2004-04-21

Listening to this music from the wonderful movie brings me back to that happier time in my life, 1989, with fewer cares, etc. It helps me relive that first time watching it in the theaters. That is, when I'm not actually watching the DVD at home. But there is something about the music in this CD. It really is awesome! My favorites are "On Our Own" (of course!), "We're Back", "Flip City" and "Higher and Higher." This is truly some of the best music for any movie, any time, IMO. If you are still a Ghostbusters fan (as I continue to be and always will), then you really must get this CD for your collection. It is well worth the money spent, however you can get it, wherever you can find it (the CD, that is). Who ya gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS! :)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome in every way!.......2004-04-20

This CD really rocks - like no other soundtrack. As I listen to each song, I am taken back in memory to the theater as I watched the movie for the very first time. I purchased Ghostbusters 1 and Ghostbusters 2 on DVD, replacing the VHS versions. Now, I did the same with the soundtrack, from cassettes (remember those? hehe) to the CD versions. I've not been disappointed with any of them. Excellent sound quality and convenience - to play B. Brown's "On Our Own" in Repeat mode ;) I could - and often do - listen to that one track over and over, along with "We're Back" and "Higher and Higher" and, of course, "Flip City" but they really are all good -- well worth the money, whatever it costs you! No Ghostbusters fan's library or shelf is complete without at least this CD, but you really have to get all of them.
;)

3 out of 5 stars Not bad........2004-02-16

This CD is decent enough. My personal favorite tracks on the album are "On Our Own", "We're Back", "Spirit", "Ghostbusters", "Flip City", and "Higher and Higher". The rest, while not bad, is, with the exception of "Flesh & Blood", just filler that has nothing to do with the movie in any way. If only they would have rounded out the CD with some samples of the excellent score for the film, it could have been much better. Overall though, it is not a bad album.

3 out of 5 stars Ok.. But doesn't beat the first.......2001-11-30

The ghostbusters 2 soundtrack is better than the movie. But still, who pays 35 dollars for a CD when I got mine for 7 dollars at a yardsale?

The soundtrack isn't too bad, but it isn't even a shadow to the soundtrack AND the first movie. That one had story, depth, great character representations, but most importantly: Humour. The ghostbusters 2 movie is more meant for kids, since the humour is more kiddie humour. So, uhm, uuuh, I never buy a soundtrack if I don't think the movie is good, so you have to be a real fan of the SECOND movie to enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars I - I - I - I ain't afraid of no ghost!.......2001-06-13

That's part of the Ghostbusters song by Run-DMC. It may even be better than the original by Ray Parker Jr. In fact, the reason I bought this soundtrack was for the Run-DMC version. Although the other songs aren't without their charms. To summarize, this is a great CD. I highly recommend it, especially to any ghosthead.

Two disks full of Oingo Boing at thier best. If you're a fan at all and don't have this I highly recommend you get it! You will NOT be disappointed. If you're new to Oingo Boingo music I'd also say this is a perfect collection of thier music to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Oingo Boingo Bests.......2006-12-12

This is probably the only album you really need to get the Boingo experience. Recorded "live" to capture the energy of the band but without that annoying crowd noise and other distractions of a real show. I find myself coming back to these tracks time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Boingo Alive.......2006-07-10

2 CD's of all of the good old Boingo stuff!! What more could you ask for?

4 out of 5 stars Pogomania for the Musically Complex.......2006-01-01

Danny Elfman may be better known for his motion picture scoring ("Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands," "Spider-Man," "Big Fish," "Chocolate Factory," etc., ad infinitum) than his work with the Mystic Knights at -this- late date, but here indeed is the evidence of his ability to write some real killer dance tunes and press his comrades through a studio concert.

The truth is, he -had- to. Boingo was a cult phenom and little more from the late '70s to the late '80s. An art band playing clubs for audiences too sophisticated -- and demanding -- to put up with "commercial" music, even including the pretty remarkable stuff MTV and KROQ were laying on us in '82 and '83. (They weren't alone: LA seemed to have one of these bands on every other block at the time.) As recording artists, however, they were just -too- sophisticated... and, well, maybe too -nerdy-. For the image-obsessed marketers, anyway.

"Alive" was not Dan's idea. It was the -marketing- department's. "Damn. They're -good-," was the general concensus at MCA at the time. "Why aren't they making us more money?" Live albums provided a bit more of an excuse to recycle the product than re-packs, so... here we are.

Good thing. The studio recordings simply were -not- indicative of this band's ability to amaze on stage at The Central or Wong's West. (This happens to a -lot- of bands, of course. Engineers are human, and doing stimulants for eight months at a time while grinding out three dozen LPs is likely to have it's consequences for -someone-.) Big venues were few and far between for the Boingo's by '87, soooooo, back to the sound stage.

The results, much as is the case on the best live albums in a sold-out field house, are much improved vs. the orginals. In this case, they are -scintillating-. "Alive" is a musician's album, but only if you're a pretty ambitious, unthreatened and self-assured musician. This stuff is -dense-, complex and clever, tune after tune after tune... at least on "side one" (and here and there on "side two).

The hooks are relentless. The lyrics are spiffy. The arrangements are -impressive-. Hell, the -sound- of it all is just -wonderful-.

(I was running a waterpark in Palm Springs at the time "Alive" arrived. The good folks at Budweiser had elected to use us for the annual MTV Spring Break show and had set up a concert stage and a 25K-watt reinforcement system. I had the engineer stick my cream-colored cassette in the player just to hear a bit of it over that huge boom box. He liked it so much he let the whole thing play through for everyone in the place. The reviews from all those frat rats were pretty favorable.)

If you're up for a "learning experience" -- or you can tolerate learning that you'll probably never be able to do -this- -- hit the buy button -now-... before you lose your nerve.

(My refusal to give it a fifth star is only because the second half of the 22-song performance is just not up to the first, but you'll get your money's worth.)

5 out of 5 stars I'm on the Outside.......2005-11-10

Every review says it and its true, this is the best Oingo Boingo collection. It improves on the studio arrangements by infusing a live vibe, while not actually being a live album (in fact, they toured to promote this so-called live album.) However, this is just the best way to hear this band. Each song is not only note perfect and frenetic as a spastic cat, but has the added benefit of elusively evading the worst of the late 80s production "values" (read "follies") of the time.

I have the casette and the CDs ... the casette stays in the car on permenant rotation ... I can't stop listening to this.

1 out of 5 stars Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-11

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
My apologies to the Oingo Boingo fans, but to all others: don't buy this CD. It's just a lot of noise from beginning to end. The songs don't evoke any emotion and are void of any sort of catchy rhythm/ tempo. Danny Elfman can't sing. I think he's tone deaf. The songs don't make you want to sing along, tap your foot, play air guitar, bang your head, shake your hips, shed a tear, etc. (like any great song would). I've had a huge exposure to all sorts of music, yet I know not one song on this 'greatest hits' anthology. I know, you'll probably tell me that Oingo was an underground band who didn't give into the commercialism of the music industry in order to get air time on the radio and make huge amounts of money. I mean, Danny Elfman can write great soundtracks for movies, and I like the Simpsons' gingle, but when he tries to put lyrics to his music, he fails miserably.
In my 'opinion', the CD is worth $0, but Amazon is charging you $27. You'd be better off spending $1 at your local dollar store to get a pack of beer coasters (cause that is what you'll end up doing with this CD) and keep the other $26 in your wallet for something good.
Amazon doesn't allow a no-star rating.
Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it!.......2007-01-08

Waste not, want not! Whatever that means. You needn't purchase other Boingo CDs (although you most certainly may). This fabulous gem has it all. The time has arrived to recognize Danny Elfman for the genius he is. Your collection will NOT be complete without Antholgy. From start to finish your treated to a whirlwind musical romp that only slows down long enough to catch your breath ("out of control" and "we close our eyes"). My beautiful daughter at the tender age of four, was a "foam at the mouth" Boingo fan.

Danny's musical ascenscion from his humble beginnings with the Mystic Knights is truly legendary. Backed with Steve Bartek and his trusty Stratocaster, this is an absolute joy to listen to. If you're not convinced purchase "Music for a Darkened Theatre". You'll be bowled over. I'm just a little guppy in a big pond. Read the other reviews. Once a Boingo fan, ALWAYS a Boingo fan. Don't think. Don't mull it over. Just buy it. You deserve it, you've earned it.....

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for disc one; 3 stars for disc two.......2006-09-29

I'm not sure how they managed to put so many great songs on one disc and such (relative) lemons on the other disc. I'm glad I got this release... it's definitely a great remastering job and has some of my favorites like "Ain't this the life" (though the one on URGH! was better), "Grey Matter", "Private Life", "Who do you want to be?" (I definitely wore out my vinyl of "Good for Your Soul").

I saw them play in 1981 or so and have recently thought it's a shame they don't perform anymore. Though, Danny Elfman has certainly found great success doing something he obviously loves. It's sort of funny how 80s-sounding some of the stuff on this release sounds. It doesn't make me cringe (like some 80s music)--but I can't quite put my finger on what makes it sound so dated. I mean, it's great and all but be prepared to recognize telltale signs of a generation of music. (Keyboard, drum machine, guitar techniques?)

5 out of 5 stars The Best Boingo Collection There Is.......2006-02-28

At 34 tracks spanning 2 cds, this is the ultimate Boingo collection. If you're a fan of their classic tunes such as "Dead Man's Party" or "Weird Science", then this is the collection to get. It's better than all the single disc collections because it contains great album tracks such as "Little Girls", "Ain't This the Life", "Stay", and "Out of Control" as well as 3 Danny Elfman solo cuts and great live versions of "We Close Our Eyes" and "Whole Day Off." The booklet has some great pics of the band in their prime and gives a pretty interesting history of the band's career. The remastered sound is also great. My only complaint is that the cds are in a cardboard fold-out case and you have to slide the discs in and out. I'm always worried I'll scratch them. I much prefer the standard plastic cases when you just push the center ring to pop out the disc. You could also put the discs in store bought cases or leave them in your cd player and not even worry about it. Other than that, the whole set is well worth it. All of the essential Boingo tracks are on it. Although I prefer the original album version of "Insanity," their are no other edited tracks on the set and each disc is about 75 minutes. So if you're interested in this quirky band's great sound, this is the only collection that I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Good...but could have been better........2005-08-28

I'm someone who just discovered Oingo Boingo a few weeks ago and was looking for a comprehensive collection of their songs. So I can't say whether this collection is their BEST or not, but what I can say is that I enjoyed just about every song on this collection and, if it isn't their best, its still pretty darn good.

I docked it a star for two reasons:

1 - Along with this collection I bought the 20th Century Masters CD and I found that many of the songs on this CD were different versions (Only a Lad for example is vastly different). The versions not on in this collection aren't the radio versions so for someone buying this collection wanting to hear that version, you won't get it.

2 - The last part of the 2nd CD consists of some live songs from their final concert. Again, perfectly enjoyable but since the studio versions aren't also on the CD you lose out on those.

Anyway, still a great CD but if you want to get the full experience I'd pick up this and the 20th Century Masters CD.

Amazon.com essential recording

Fronted by prolific composer Danny Elfman (The Simpsons, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman, Dick Tracy, Edward Scissorhands), Oingo Boingo marry seriously clever songwriting and outright silliness. All the band's best songs are accounted for in Best Of, including "Dead Man's Party" and "Weird Science." The music is propelled by brassy hooks and ska-driven tempos. Elfman's vocals--sometimes a maxed-out, pleading whine, other times a ghoulish undercurrent of a whisper--are a pleasing mismatch for the random lyrical subject matter. --Beth Bessmer

3 out of 5 stars Another Useless Compilation.......2005-06-25

Oingo Boingo had more compilations than any band has a right to and they all suck. Godawful songs like "Wild Sex In The Working Class", "Flesh 'N' Blood", "Goodbye-Goodbye", and "Sweat" make their way on this one. Terrible songs like "Grey Matter", "Little Girls", "Insects", and "Capitalism" ruin others. This is one group where choosing the highlights is easy. OK so you have to choose the overused and rather bland "Dead Man's Party", the fun "Wierd Science", and classics "Who Do You Want To Be?" and "Only A Lad". From there you pick "Nothing Bad Ever Happens To Me", "Winning Side", "Gratitude", "Stay", "Just Another Day", "No One Lives Forever", "Help Me", "Only Makes Me Laugh", "On The Outside", "Wake Up, It's 1984", and "Same Man I Was Before". From the new direction "Where Do All My Friends Go?", "My Life", "New Generation", and "Home Again" from Boi-Ngo and the first 3 songs and maybe some others from Boingo might be OK to fill out the CD. Easy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Boingo.......2004-07-30

I only remember Danny Elfman's pathetic comeback attempt in the 90's as Boingo or whatever....However this CD puts him back on the map as a musical genius in my mind. I only recently started hearing some of his 85-91 material which is fabulous. This CD is a winner all the way. As a fan of big hooks, it's not perfect, but pretty damn close. I will be a fan of these guys for a long time. Dead Man's Party is one of the best of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Obviously Awesome.......2002-11-02

Great compilation. All my favorite songs from before they became just Boingo. If "Dead Man's Party" doesn't make you nostalgic, what will?

4 out of 5 stars Standard for any collection..........2002-10-18

"Best O' Boingo" is a basic necessity for any good collection. Songs such as "Not My Slave" and "Wild Sex in the Working Class" showcase Danny Elfman's songwriting talent, and get you moving. No Halloween Party is complete without Boingo on the stereo.

4 out of 5 stars I like........2002-04-28

This CD is a fairly good compilation of Boingo songs. I love this CD, even though it seems to go by too quickly when I listen to it.

3 out of 5 stars best of? maybe. a good start at any rate.......2007-02-20

From the outset I must confess that I don't own this particular compilation. I do however have all the material that is present here within the context of their original albums.

Whilst there's nothing at all wrong with this album, I'd think think hard about buying it. It contains material from the first three albums. The first two albums are still widely available and priced quite moderately. Further, they've got a bunch of classic material that didn't make it onto this comp. I'd actually put some of these other tracks left off this compilation e.g. "What You Get", "Why'd We Come" in front of other material that was included e.g. "Whole Day Off" The third album, 'Good For Your Soul' is currently deleted and so it can be a little harder to come by. I understand that it may be tempting to purchase this album for its two tracks from GFYS. Fine. But please also hassle A&M to re-release GFYS. You deserve access to these other fine songs as well! :D

Perhaps you should check out the samples of the other albums, "Only a Lad" and "Nothing to Fear" that Amazon offer. If you think the material is interesting then it may be worth your while to take the plunge and pay out a few more dollars cos I think you get a better Boingo for yer buck.

All in all, this is an enjoyable compilation of music. However, don't come crying to me when it's a superfluous item in your collection after you've caught Boingo fever and tracked down their backcatalogue. At any rate, the cover art is nice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-01-21

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2005-06-11

This particular release is amazing! There is not one bad song throughout the entire cd. It is one of those albums that you can listen to over and over again and never get tired of it....now that's what I call a great record.

For those of you who have never heard of Oingo Boingo, I would say they are a band that makes music that is almost impossible to describe. Their music is truly unique and is completely different from anything you've ever heard. Although there are a lot of bands that have their own sound, Oingo Boingo adds to their sound diversity by including the use of wind instruments. So I'll make an attempt and say Oingo Boingo is punk meets pop meets new wave meets brass meets weird, and that's about as close as I can get. So give them a listen, you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST "BEST OF" OINGO BOINGO..........2004-01-13

Ok, so Oingo Boingo had more than 3 records for one thing for one to pick and choose songs from to make a best of record. I don't think A&M in the end if ever really wanted to put out a collection of fan favorites or get a music expert's opinion of what "the best" of these 3 records had to offer. With each listen it becomes apparant that the studio wanted a collection of songs that blended nicely together and this collection of songs does just that. I mean, each OB album from the early days' had its own appeal. Good For Your Soul had more of a regee feel, Nothing To Fear had more of a punk-pop feel and Only A Lad had more of a ska/new wave feel. So whatever mood you're in, you can find 10 songs that give into that/those desire(s)...but this collection finds a common ground between songs on each of those albums. So...if you're a fan of Oingo Boingo show your support by buying every Oingo Boingo album ever! But if you'd rather have just a solid music collection with no filler, then get this b/c it's a killer collection of songs by a killer band and it even has one of the best album covers ever! Yeah, there's other memorable and stimulating songs by this band, but I'd rather just stick with this record. OTher songs like "Perfect System" and "Running On Treadmill" are kinda lacking in relevance in my opinion. It's as if the band knew they had a cut off of how little they could put on a record so they (or most likely the producers) wrote what they could and chose the ones that had the best chance of "connecting" with the audience. Well, out of the 30 or or songs the producers chose on those albums, these are the the 12 they would have chosen if they would've waited...although that may have not been possible for various complex reasons...but like I said, if you think more is better then go ahead and buy more albums by this band. This collection is perfectly good for newcomers and just as well for those who simply have an astute taste in music.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite the best.......2003-05-30

What's this? A "best of" Oingo Boingo that doesn't include their biggest hit, "Weird Science"? How can that be? Well, it's because it only includes material from the three albums they recorded for A&M Records. While there is nothing particularly bad here, overall the album was a disappointment to me.
