Avalon
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Progressive rock savants Roxy Music reinvented themselves as the avatars of caviar dreams and champagne wishes on this smooth-as-$1,000-cognac 1982 disc. By this point in their jagged discography, Roxy had become little more than Bowie-esque lead singer Bryan Ferry's backup band, with his regal tone ensconced somewhere between the synth-fetish of Ultravox and a friskier Scott Walker. Seemingly gone were the band's herky-jerky days as a democratically run outfit--Avalon's syrupy, New Romantic tone is worlds away from the era when Brian Eno's unpredictable keyboard noodles or Phil Manzanera's rocket-fuel guitar defined the proceedings. The exquisite "More Than This" and the moody title cut give the decadence of Robin Leach's '80s a dignity that those times probably didn't deserve. But even if the Reagan years didn't sound to you like new wave for social climbers, as a soundtrack to upscale daydreaming, Avalon beats an episode of Dynasty hands down. --Don Harrison --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Amazon.com essential recording
Hipper students of 1980s pop might pretend that Joy Division and the Smiths had a monopoly on melancholia, but for the older, more suave brooders, nothing could match the stylized desolation of Roxy Music's last album. Avalon was recorded in the wake of the band's hit version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Although that song isn't on Avalon, its tortured shadow looms large over "While My Heart Is Still Beating," the title track, and the unlikely Balearic anthem "More Than This." If time has been kind to Bryan Ferry's crumpled Armani chic, it hasn't exactly been vicious to his back catalog: Avalon sounds even more sumptuous now that the CD age has caught up with Rhett Davis's pristine production. --Peter Paphides

It's a Classic.......2007-06-03
What can I say that hasn't been said already? I think the history books have already been written on this CD.Sound quality is excelent, I am extremly pleased with this production, and the price I paid, so many reproduction CD's now adays just don't have the quality of the original vinyl, then others are even better. This is one of the later. A must have CD.
A Serene Experience..........2007-02-11
Owning this fine work of audio bliss speaks volumes for your taste in music. "Avalon" was certainly ahead of its time when it was released and still is considered by many to be a gem of the 80's. So do yourself a favor and if you haven't already, add this to your audio collection. It makes for a nice evening when you have the time to simply sit and be and sample "Avalon" with a nice glass of wine. Enjoy
Both Timeless and of its time........2007-01-02
This is one of those albums that stand the test of time and merits repeated listening decades after its release.
Roxy Music's "Avalon" joins Steely Dan's "Aja" as a timeless pop classic. Whereas "Aja" invoked the laid-back cool of clubbing and hot-tubbing in late 70s southern California, "Avalon" invokes the dawn of "Cool Britannia" but just on the cusp of the New Romantics proclamation of the Thatcher years. These aural landscapes were revolutionary at the time, and a break from Roxy Music's discordant power pop past: the logical culmination of Manifesto's "Dance Away" expanded to a whole album. Themes are of the usual ones of "Dance with a Stranger" as the nouvelle riche of the City meet decadent Aristos, all trying to snaffle up all the leggy pretty young things that make their way to London a la Liz (Julie Christie) in "Billy Liar." "Flesh" indeed.
Always the right mood........2007-01-02
Hello World,
Great song writing and musicmanship. Take a chance with me is one of the best songs I've ever heard, nice double time bass drum and amazing energy. Buy it, do it.
An unbiased review:.......2006-10-15
First and foremost buy this album because "More Than This" and "Avalon" are, of course, worth the price. I would say that the remainder of the album may be appreciated by true musicians because of the complex guitar playing, keyboard, and the mixing together of this. But everyone else won't really appreciate the other songs. Sometimes you listen to an album which has a hit and some of the other songs are really good and we think, "That song is so catchy that it could have been a hit, too." Well, not the rest of "Avalon". I would consider it filler (just fine as far as the record company goes and understandably so.)The remainder is good to listen to while washing the dishes.

Customer Reviews:
Martina's why I bought it.......2007-05-14
And her rendition of "How Great Thou Art" is worth the price of the CD to me. I have mixed feelings about the rest of it. I didn't care much for most of the male voices. While they are sensitive and thoughtful and generally reverent, which I do appreciate, I still prefer more traditional, resonant, powerful male voices, such as Alan Jackson's on his gospel CD. I will listen to this one occasionally, if only to hear Martina, but Precious Memories is still my favorite.
Why are so many "inspired by" recordings not truly inspired by the source material?.......2007-04-07
I wonder why so many "inspired by" recordings are not produced in response to the material that supposedly serves as the basis for their inspiration. In the case of movies, why not let the artists view the film prior to its release, and let them craft songs built around scenes, themes or the ideas presented. There may be some reason why this isn't done--it may be hard to write enough original songs, or maybe it's difficult to let the artists see a film prior to its release. If the problem is the latter, why couldn't those contributing songs be given something in written form? It may not be as inspiring, but it at least provides a starting point for creating a song.
This is not to knock Music Inspired by the Motion Picture Amazing Grace. It's a fine collection of hymns by a variety of talented artists. It seems a shame though that only the song "Amazing Grace" performed by Chris Tomlin has any direct connection with the movie. John Newton, the author of the hymn, had a relationship with the key figure in the film, William Wilberforce.
Tomlin does what many of the artists do with these hymns, and a little more. In addition to a different arrangement, he takes the risk of adding some new verses to a classic song, and pulls it off admirably. Nichole Nordeman does the same with equally impressive results on "Just As I Am." Tomlin's subdued playing and instrumentation reinvents and adds a touch of grace to one of the most popular songs of all time.
Jeremy Camp's strong masculine voice is the perfect complement for music that thunders around the verses of "It Is Well." It's a strong performance augmented by the background vocals of his wife Adie.
This is one of several remarkable duets, the next featuring Shawn McDonald & Bethany Dillon on "All Creatures of Our God & King." It starts off with an ethereal vibe but the vocals get a little cluttered with the programming that ends the song. Another song that suffers from programming is "Fairest Lord Jesus" by Natalie Grant.
It's a challenge for artists to take such familiar songs and make them sound fresh. For the most part, these interpretations succeed in making these hymns sound new. The best results here are the songs that are acoustic and less complicated like the title song.
Another brilliant example is "Rock of Ages" by David Crowder & Marty Stuart. It begins and ends with a delightful acoustic instrumental that sounds like some wonderful Christmas recording. David Crowder continues to record impressive music.
The medley "My Jesus I Love Thee / `Tis So Sweet" by Bart Millard (of Mercy Me) starts and ends with the sounds of an accordion. The music is a relaxed blend of contemporary and pop sounds. Though the title of the song does not show this as a duet, the voice of Derek Webb is unmistakable. He is a great addition to one of the best songs on the recording.
A light country version of "How Great Thou Art" by Martina McBride is also excellent and closes the recording.
Two black gospel songs are included, but with orchestration and more production, they don't fit as well with the many songs that lean toward acoustic pop or rock. They are well done and they do add variety, but like the songs that make use of programming, they feel a little out of place.
This is a strong collection of hymns done in a contemporary style. It won't appeal as much to those who favor more traditional renderings.
Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy!.......2007-04-06
With the exception of the first and last tracks ("Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art"), I would have to say that the balance of the songs on this CD are limp and unenthusiastic....better to go right to iTunes or some other music download site and just get those two tracks!!
I think the CD was made with good intent, but unless you want something to fall asleep to, this album doesn't seem to reflect any of the joy or enthusiasm that I associate with Christian music or Christianity itself. Perhaps it was just that the songs were sung "quietly", but I did not find them to be infused with much in the way of "inspiration", and I got none from listening to them.......
Far better, I think, to go buy something like the soundtrack to the actual movie "Amazing Grace", which contains beautiful and atmospheric compositions, and which deserves to be nominated for an Academy award....
Another option would be to buy the soundrack to either of the "Sister Act" movies (in addition to my suggestion in the preceding paragraph), they are much more lively, joyful, celebratory and creative than this!
Any of those options will leave you more uplifted and inspired than this CD left me...I absolutely LOVED "Amazing Grace", and would strongly urge anyone looking for a GOOD movie to see the film that "inspired the music" on this CD.
Seeing the actual film will leave you feeling inspired and hopeful; that good men can still accomplish great things, no matter how many people are on the "other side" of what they are working against!!
[Hint: I understand that that WONDERFUL rendition of "Amazing Grace" with the bagpipes, drums and other instruments that plays at the end of the movie is available on iTunes as a "bonus track", and it is DEFINITELY NOT TO BE MISSED!!!]
Inspirational and beautiful.......2007-03-29
I bought this CD after hearing the updated version of Amazing Grace, the title and theme song for the movie. WOW - I was so impressed that a classic hymn could be modernized without losing it's impace and simplicity. I had doubts about the rest of the songs, but was soooo wrong - happily!) All the songs on this CD are beautiful - classic hymns, updated beautifully. Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful.
AMAZING CD!! .......2007-03-27
Great traditional songs I know by artists I love!! Only downfall is the original version of "Amazing Grace" isnt on the CD, only Chris Tomlin's amazing version..

Catchy, infectious, sassy & vulgar.......2007-07-17
Those are just a few of the many words I can use to describe this cd. I am not a fan or rap or hip hop at all(I'm a R&R girl), but this is now one of my favorite cd's in my collection(of which I have around 500). Mickey's songs are from true life experiences, so each song is like a story. There are some silly lyrics in the songs, but the beats backing him up are just so catchy, I found myself dancing along, to my own surprise.
Of course by now, you've heard the buzz around "Jane Fonda" which if he was to have a radio hit, this would be it. But there is so much more to this cd, every song is a winner in my book. Please note that none of these songs are life changing, or a benchmark in the music world, but if you listen and take the songs for what they are(stories from his past) you can't help but be intrigued by them, and want to know more about Mickey. I tend to judge a good cd by whether I need to skip a song, and I never do with this one. My personal favorites are "Mr. Right" and "Roll Up Your Sleeves", but as I said before, each song is great in it's own way.
In closing, this cd is so good in my book, that I saw him live in concert 3 times in one week, with one time being a 7 hour round trip drive. Just do yourself a favor and get the cd. You won't be disappointed.
Old school is back !.......2007-05-17
Great music ! Great fun ! Best old school rap since "Raising Hell" (Run DMC). Kinda reminds me in many ways of LL Cool J's "Walking with the Panther" album but even more daring. You gotta get this one because Mickey Avalon promises to be the true hip hop star of the next decade or more. White men can rap for sure !
Wow..........2007-05-17
I heard all the hype about this guy and wondered why after a year, there were only 12 reviews on this album. So I listened to it and very quickly found out why. Mickey Avalon is so appalling that i'm sure the only people who will review this album are the ones who are either completely duped (aka the same ones who bought K-Fed's albumm) or they are protesting his fame. I don't know which I detest more, this guy's sickening lifestyle or his sickening music. Well, maybe his personal life isn't any of my business, except he makes it everyone's business on this album, piercing the ears of those who like serious music with his sex-drenched lyrics. I don't have a problem with that if they are subtle lyrics, but I have a feeling if Avalon was subtle, his music would never be noticed. This is because his reputation is built entirely upon his ability to shock...and perform mostly nude, which I guess some desperately horny girls interpret as being a wild sex icon. I'm a guy, so suffice it to say I find his performance f***king disgusting. But forget about his attitude. How about the music, eh? Well, All Music Guide gave his album the most negative 2.5 rating I've ever read, but I have to give it one star. I've hated nonentities like Kevin Federline for a long time, but Mickey Avalon is just as talentless, maybe even more so. K-Fed's voice blends into the generic music, so at worst he is merely very boring. Avalon sings in a loopy, idiotic voice over inane beats, none more so than the ridiculously old school/terrible single "Jane Fonda". Shame on Entourage for featuring it. Elsewhere, there is merely more of the same bad beats and worse vocals. I could go on about this, but suffice it to say that if you want ANY intelligence or skill to your music, you will be sorely disappointed. This guy raises the almost completely talentless Fred Durst one notch on my ratings. But just one.
One-Hit Wonder? Probably..........2007-05-12
That's just a prediction of course. Jane Fonda is a great song that will be a popular request at parties and dance clubs for a long time to come. The other songs on this CD/album don't come close to it. My suggestion is to buy the hit on iTunes or a single and don't bother with the CD, unless you want a high-quality (i.e., Audio CD) version of it.
T-Rex? More like Paulie Shore, but .......2007-04-09
I was lured in by the hype around this guy and bought this CD to check it out. Overall, it's some interesting stuff with entertaining beats and good flow, although it is full of flaws.
Mickey's rap flow is decent, the closest comparison is Sondoobiest or House of Pain (without the screaming, as it's all fairly mellow). The main issue I have is with the lack of clever lyrics. In fact, some of them are so bad that I would imagine you could pick any person off the street and have a 50-50 chance that they could come up with something better. Still, some of his raps are in uncharted territory as while he does more than his share of boasting about the size of his d**k, he gives almost equal time to rapping about turning tricks for male clients. Now that's something I've never heard in a rap song before, nor did I ever want to- but this subject comes up in probably eight of the eleven tracks. Also, while I'm not easily offended or usually too hung up on rap lyrics, he manages to offend in a blaspehmous, cringeworthy way with the very first track, "Waiting to Die," repeatedly referring to God as "one sick mothaf****."
But when it comes down to it, despite some unforgivably bad lyrics, he spits it out pretty well and a lot of this stuff is catchy. "Jane Fonda" is a pretty irresistable track actually and "Mr. Right" not bad either. However, I'm kind of sorry I listened to the final track, "My D**k," with some of the worst lyrics of all time, not to mention that he's joined on the mic by actor/former MTV VJ Simon Rex (known here as Dirt Nasty) whose raps are not so palatable. You'd be hard pressed to find a rapper unable to come up with anything halfway clever about that body part, but Mickey and his pals seem to have come up short here.
Overall, "Jane Fonda" alone is enough to make this worthwhile and there's plenty of catchy stuff to entertain you if you can filter out much of the alternately inane or disturbing lyrics. The comparisons I have read about Mickey being a hipster and 2007's answer to T-Rex (who raps) don't seem quite accurate. It could be the tone of his voice or his look, but he reminds me much more of a Paulie Shore for 2007 (who raps).

The Perfect Summary of Avalon's First Seven Years..........2007-05-04
"Christian music will never be the same..."
That sentence has probably been said by a lot of people regarding the arrival of one of Christian music's biggest phenomenons: AVALON. The vocal quartet, known for their smooth harmonies, has received:
Twenty-five Dove Award Nominations
Three Dove Awards
Three GRAMMY nominations
An American Music Award
Two RIAA-certified Gold albums
Over 3.5 million albums sold
Twenty #1 hit singles (Sixteen of which are featured on this album)
Several television appearances
and more.
Although Avalon has been lavished with success throughout the past 12 years, they are definitely familiar with sorrow and misfortune. (They've had more success than misfortune!) They've had several member changes, as Nikki Hassman-Anders, Cherie Adams, and Michael Passons have all left the group. That's not including Jody McBrayer, who just recently announced that he will be leaving the group as well in January of 2008 due to heart disease.
However, seven years after they began, Avalon released in 2003 "Testify To Love: The Very Best of Avalon" a collection of sixteen of their #1 hits. Smashes include:
"Give It Up" - the first we heard from Avalon
"Testify To Love" - the longest running #1 song of the 1990s
"Adonai" - 1998 Dove Award (Most Inspirational Recorded Song)
"The Glory" - huge #1 hit
"Wonder Why" - another #1
Also includes a special bonus cut from their Christmas record, the spine-tingling "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" (also done by Celine Dion).
Overall, this collection of songs summarizes the first seven years of AVALON...however, don't stop there!!
AMAZING COLLECTION by BJ.......2007-03-03
This collection ROCKS!! Avalon is definitely my favorite group of all time! "New Day", a new recording, is extrememly catchy and one of Avalon's best. I really loved this one. "Everything To Me", another new recording, features Michael and Melissa with their amazing and powerful voices. "Pray" is fast and catchy with Jody's special vocal talent along with Melissa. Of course I loved all the huge #1 hits like: "Wonder Why", "Give It Up", "Testify To Love", "Can't Live A Day", "In Not Of" and "I Don't Want To Go" and MORE! I liked the bonus track, "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day", too. I would definitely recommend this CD to everyone! LOVE YOU AVALON!!!!!!!
AWESOME! .......2006-06-19
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE CD'S THAT I JUST CAN'T LIVE A DAY WITHOUT LISTENING TO! AVALON HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME AND MANY OF THESE SONGS I KNEW, BUT DIDN'T REALIZE IT WAS THEM SINGING IT UNTIL I PURCHASED THE CD. I WILL NEVER REGRET THIS PURCHASE!
MY FAVORITE TRACK IS #4 "EVERYTHING TO ME", ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS IS WHAT MY LORD IS TO ME!
Good Sound, Very Good Lyrics.......2006-04-23
This is a strong collection of songs by Avalon. Although I've heard several of these songs, I have never had an Avalon CD before. I have been quite pleased with this group of songs.
The songs have solid Christian lyrics. The sound is a lighter pop sound. It is very upbeat and some of the songs are pretty catchy.
Some of the one that I particularly like are as follows: 'Everything To Me', 'Testify To Love', 'Adonai', 'Always Have, Always Will', and 'The Glory'.
This is definitely worth a listen.
Great Cd.......2005-10-23
This is just an awesome cd and anybody into christian music would love it. New Day and Testify to Love are my favorite songs on this cd.

Mississippi John Hurt recorded 13 country-blues songs for the Okeh Electric Records company in 1928. Then he vanished. Actually, he never went anywhere. Indeed, he never strayed from his hometown of Avalon, Mississippi. He simply put the guitar down. It was the Great Depression, times were tough, money was scarce, and he needed to work. Nearly 30 years later, a blues enthusiast tracked him down, took him back to Washington, D.C., and suddenly Mississippi John's musical career resumed as quickly as it had finished. He recorded again, but these first songs from the late 1920s--with John's melancholy voice and hypnotic guitar playing at its most inspired--are his greatest musical accomplishments. --Percy Keegan
Customer Reviews:
The real thing.......2007-03-22
Fabulous singing, guitar playing that must have had a great influence on Jerry Garcias acoustic stuff. And wonderful songs.
Mellifluous early blues recordings!.......2006-09-04
Mississippi John Hurt recorded only 13 songs before returning to a life of obscurity and hard work on a farm. Of these 13 songs recorded in 1928, 11 were penned by John Hurt with the other two being traditional spiritual numbers ("Blessed be the name" and "Praying on the old camp ground"). The recording quality of these Okeh recordings is simply fantastic, and have the best recording quality I have heard from this era. A little hiss is heard (very little) and not much else.
As to the recordings themselves, they are probably the sweetest sounding, most mellifluous early delta/country blues I have ever heard. John Hurt may not have had the well-known name of a Robert Johnson or Son House, but these recordings have had their influence in their own way. The song Stack O' Lee penned by Hurt became an R&B hit in 1950 (as Stack-A-Lee) for New Orleans pianist Archibald, and also became a rock-and-roll hit in 1958 for Lloyd Price (as Stagger Lee).
It should be noted that after Hurt recorded these songs, he went back to work in his hometown of Avalon, MS. Because this was an out-of the-way town, few passed through it, and because of this Hurt was influenced by few outside artists of the day. What we wind up with on this album is the heart and soul of John Hurt.......and it is magnificent.
Avalon Blues; Complete 1928 okeh recordings.......2006-03-26
If you like to hear Mississippi John Hurt, this is a very good
group of early music he sang. I like it very much, and I bought it as a gift for a family member never thinking I would get "hooked" on him as much as the family member was. This open my eyes to some wonderful music. I'm glad I bought for someone else and got to listen to it myself.
sweet sweet blues.......2006-03-08
This is simply the smoothest blues i've ever heard. His incredibly fluid and smooth playing style is like a steady flow of water. Im also amazed at how one man could create such a sound with a guitar and sing at the same time. This music is also incredibly happy sounding for blues, the lyrics are rather sad, but the pretty way he sings them makes it very sweet sounding. This music reminds me less of the old delta blues (even though thats what it is) but sounds more like music from the hills, almost as if there is a folky feel to it. This is definately a great addition to anybodies blues collection, and i thoroughly suggest anybody who is interested in the blues to check this out.

Avalon Sings Hymns: What I Expected, And Done Well........2007-07-19
When I learned Avalon had a hymns project, I expected several hymns, done with excellent harmonies and contemporary arrangements. If this is what you want, this is what you'll get.
A couple of highlights was the acoustic guitar on "How Great Thou Art", and the excellent aca pella version of "Holy, Holy, Holy". The latter served as an introduction to "Blessed Assurance", and only was the first verse: I definitely wanted to hear more of "Holy, Holy, Holy", though most renditions do seem to find a way to avoid the wonderful third verse.
Another slight gripe is that the final two selections were not really hymns. They were not out of place stylistically, but I would not have put them on a hymn project. Is this a reason to avoid the whole project? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
Faith by Avalon.......2007-03-29
I really love this CD it has a vatiety of old & new music, I will buy more CD's by Avalon, I find it good to drive too, also it helps when you have things on your mind to know we are not alone with the Lord, Amen. Thanks Avalon & Amazon.
Hallelujah!!.......2007-03-24
I usually do not write reviews, I'm usually the one who reads them. But this CD is definitely worth writing a review on. This is THE BEST Avalon CD made. It is a worship CD. It is fall on your face, worship music with some praise in between. If you don't have this CD you need to get it now...go get it...what are you waiting for??:)
Avalon has done it again! by BJ.......2007-03-09
I think I've written a review for almost every Avalon album, including Jody's solo CD. On every one of these reviews, I've told you about how phenomenal this quartet is. With this release, they step it up one notch higher! Their voices and harmonies are spectacular. Every song is terrific, ESPECIALLY tracks 2-8, 12, and 13. The only disappointment for me on this album was "How Great Thou Art", which was hard to sing to at first because of the different arrangement. Greg's breathy voice on this didn't help, either. I like his voice on all the other songs, but this one just didn't work for me.
I was overjoyed when I found "For Freedom", the bonus track, on the album. I had heard it before on my local radio station near May of 2006. I remember the DJ saying: "And stay tuned this hour for a brand new single from Avalon" and I was so happy! (Of course, I'm mad at my radio station because it's now March 2007 and they STILL have not debuted "Orphans Of God" from "Stand" yet!) Anyway, "For Freedom" is a definite highlight and will beg for tears every time it is listened to.
Overall, this album ROCKS!! Avalonians and other people alike will enjoy this collection of timeless hymns sung by one of today's top Christian artists! :-) [...]
Outstanding.......2007-02-08
This is a fabulous collection of hymns, both old and new, sung in a fresh new way by the 4 outstanding voices that comprise Avalon! Awesome!

the perfect accompaniment to home cooking, italian style, this CD never tires. (maybe i don't cook italian often enough?)
if i'm not mistaken, the performer is Angelo Petisis & His Mandolin Orchestra.
Fun CD.......2005-08-17
Picked this up in Bed, Bath, and Beyond. A fun CD that we we play when having an "Italian night" making spaghetti. Seems pretty authentic.
the soundtrack to our tuscany trip.......2004-11-18
We recently vacationed in the heart of Chianti Classico and found this CD waiting for us in our villa. For lack of music selection, we ended up playing this in our car everyday as we traveled the winding roads of Tuscany. It has become ingrained into our psyche ever since, and we can't wait to hear it again! Compared to some of the other Italian Mandolin CDs out there, this one has all the classics and a variety of moods. We love it!

The Definitive Avalon Collection.......2006-01-26
Outstanding collection, with long forgotten gems like "Young and In Love," "Where Are You," "You Are Mine," and "Beach Party." Venus" was so successful that it overshadowed Avalon's other work, but many of his other songs are masterpieces of '60's pop!
Blast From The Past.......2005-10-06
Want to turn back the hands of time. This will do it
This Is All You Need!!!.......2005-02-22
This is a great cd set. People think this is just an expanded version of Varese's last Frankie Avalon cd set, theyre highly mistaken.
The tracks on this cd were ALL taken from the original first generation tapes where available, the master they used for Venus on this cd corrects the dropouts found on ALL previous cds, and the tape they used for this cd hadn't been played in over 40 years.
This cd also has some tracks in first time stereo, plus the very first cd issue of the original hit 45 rpm version of Two Fools. The later stereo version (which sounds totally different, but probably recorded around the same time) is on plenty of other cds, and varese was going to use it for this cd until myself and a few others persueded them to use the original 45 version.
At the time, I had been told that no 3-track tape exists for the original 45 version, so i assumed at the time that they were going to go with the mono version of the song because of it. When the discussion of using the mono hit vs. the stereo remake, the people who asked for the true 45 version on cd were given a lot of crap from those who wanted to have the song in stereo on the cd.
Well, the original 45 version of Two Fools made it onto this cd. That alone should make this cd worth buying as the 45 version is definitely superior to the later stereo re-recording. As an added bonus the 45 version does actually appear in a narrowed 2-track stereo mix, which should make the cd a winner for both those who wanted the 45 version on cd, and those who wanted the song in stereo on cd.
If you purchase this cd, there is not a need for any other Frankie Avalon hits package. If you own any other Frankie Avalon hits packages, throw them out and buy this one.
Frankie Avalon Collectors will enjoy this CD.......2004-06-24
One of the best Frankie Avalon CD collection of songs.Frankie Avalon is no ordinary singer.Frankie Avalon is best when singing romantic songs with his boy next door pleasant friendly winning way.You should have pleasure enjoying this CD if you like Frankie then buy it you should enjoy it.They should release more Frankie Avalon songs in CD.Frankie Avalon should record the song "Unforgettable".
Expanded anthology of Avalon's hit-making years.......2002-05-31
Avalon is often relegated to the status of pretty-boy teen-idol who, along with Fabian, Bobby Rydell and others, stood in for Elvis during his residency in the Army. But listening to this 25-track collection, it's clear that there was never any intention (by either Avalon or his management) to position the crooner as a rock 'n' roller. These hit singles, B-sides and non-charting album tracks show him to be a balladeer through-and-through; a handsome, capable pop Sinatra (though, surprisingly, Avalon fashioned himself more after Perry Como).
His first two hits, 1958's "De De Dinah" and "Ginger Bread" featured a nasal delivery that was dropped on the romantic follow-up, "I'll Wait For You." The ensuing string of hits, peaking with the chart-topping "Venus" and continuing through 1962's "You Are Mine," displayed tremendous charm. Non-threatening charm, to be sure -- how worried could parents be about a singer who covered "Tuxedo Junction"? -- but charm, nonetheless.
It's no surprise that Avalon was a favorite with adolescent girls (and a bane to the boys who chased them), singing puppy-love fare such as "Just Ask Your Heart," "Why," and "Too Young To Love," as well as romantic dreams like "A Perfect Love." Even the pathos of "Don't Let Love Pass Me By" was aimed more squarely at stirring his fans' romantic daydreams than motivating their pity.
The hit singles "Bobby Sox to Stockings" and "A Boy Without a Girl" (#8 and #10 A- and B-side of the same single!) are smoothly arranged, with polished backing vocals and polite drums that push the tempo without becoming raucous. The Don Costa arranged "You Are Mine" is spectacularly dramatic, and the sophisticated horn charts of "Swingin' on a Rainbow" lean to the Bobby Darin side of Las Vegas.
As the '50s turned into the '60s, Avalon's music followed him into his burgeoning film career. The title song from "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" wasn't a hit, but features a fantastic production to accompany the movie's plot. And closing this collection are a pair of tunes, "Beach Party" and "Don't Stop Now," from Avalon's first AIP beach party film. (Sadly missing is his stupendous turn as The Potato Bug, a fictional British Invasion pop star, from the film "Bikini Beach.").
The twenty-five tracks expand upon Varese's earlier collection, 1995's "The Best of Frankie Avalon," making this a significantly more complete anthology of Avalon's original sides. Those looking for more early material can fill in non-hit tracks with See for Miles' "The EP Collection."

New version of a Roxy classic.......2007-07-04
As an ardent fan of Roxy Music since their earliest days, I was looking forward to hearing what the SACD format would add to the original.
To be honest, I have only a little SACD format discs to play on my Sony player, but this is by far the best.
For any Roxy fan who still have their vinyl copy, this version gives so much more, it's a very worthwhile buy!
Avalon SACD.......2007-04-05
This was my third sacd purchase after DSOTM and Brothers in Arms, bought mainly after having read other reviews and being included in 'must have' lists. Whilst not being a great Bryan Ferry fan I did enjoy the music, particularly the title track. I found this album made more use of the rear channels for instrument placement. I was disappointed with the sound quality, the clarity not as good as the other two but Ferry's vocals are very distinctive.
Just as good as they say!.......2007-01-11
I may be missing the (by all accounts) wonderful surround mix as I'm 2ch only, but the stereo tracks are certainly amazing with remarkable clarity, dynamics and extended bass. If you've already got the LP version you may not be overwhelmed by the difference the SACD makes, but it's a worthwhile upgrade from CD. The bonus track is surround only but actually plays well with just the front 2 channels working, so it's by no means wasted on a stereo setup.
Only upgrade if you can play the SACD layer........2006-07-18
Others have reviewed the album itself (GREAT!), so I will limit my comments to the sound.
I have not yet heard the SACD layer. The CD layer compared to the original edition is a bit louder and I feel somewhat clearer. However, I was surprised that the original CD holds up pretty well. Considering it was done I think by Bob Clearmountain and Bob Ludwig, I guess that's not a big surprise.
If you won't play the SACD layer, I would not bother spending the money to "upgrade" if you have the original CD.
Great CD Layer.......2006-06-12
I read the reviews for this hybrid SACD with great interest, wondering if the CD layer was as fantastic as the SACD layer was reported to be. I bought the standard CD remaster several years ago when it first came out, but even though it was a big improvement over the original CD release, it was still a little disappointing. I just finished my first listening of the CD layer on this hybrid, and I can whole heartedly, and without any reservations, say that this CD is everything I hoped it would be. Folks, if you have a critical ear for sound quality, this is the version you want to buy. It will play on any standard CD player or SACD player.
