Trace

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Trace is obsessed with time. "Can you deny there's nothing greater ... than the traveling hands of time?" asks frontman Jay Farrar early on, and song to song, he deliberates time's tyranny. Farrar's voice always sounds beaten but never quite broken here, and when on the impossibly catchy "Windfall" he wishes "may the wind take your troubles away," it feels like nothing short of a blessing. Trace is alternative country's most perfect moment: the Uncle Tupelo-ish electric crunch rocks for something better, even as its twangy steel and fiddle never forget the very country fact that time will beat us all. --David Cantwell --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

After a decade of recording, the no-nonsense, deep-voiced Adkins has blossomed recently with riproaring, crowd-pleasing fare like "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk." Similar material turns up this time in the form of "Swing" (will it be Major League Baseball's answer to Hank Williams Jr.'s "All My Rowdy Friends Are Comin' Over Tonight"?) and the sing-along anthems "Ladies Love Country Boys" and "Fightin' Words." Beyond that, Adkins's honest, emotive blue-collar substance emerges on the thoughtful small-town chronicle "I Came Here to Live" and the sensual, contrite "Words Get in the Way." He similarly excels with "Ride," a hard-edged trucker tune; the anti-drug cautionary "High"; and "The Stubborn One," a poignant tale of the lifelong bond between a young man and his dying grandfather. In this day and age, it's a no-brainer that Adkins has to give the masses (and radio) the kinds of anthems they want. But unlike some artists, capable of doing that and not much more, his ability to project honesty, heart, and empathy is undeniable. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard.......2007-07-22

I have all the Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Son Volt albums, as well as a fine collection of Jeff and Jay's solo work. Although my preferences vary from album to album, you can't escape the fact that this is simply the best written of any of the work that the high school friends has ever put together. Windfall should be in an American Top 10 of all time, and others like Tear Stained Eye and 10 Second News aren't far behind. If you are looking to explore some Alt-Country, start here and then grab Summerteeth.

5 out of 5 stars best album of the 90's........2007-07-04

this is the best album released in the 90's, and one of the best ever from any decade. that's all you need to know.

5 out of 5 stars High Point for Farrar.......2006-09-20

This amazing album keeps going. Every song conjurs up late night highway driving and decaying urban fabric. Soulful music throughout without a bad song on the entire ablum. Farrar rocks out and can keep it mello too. This is a staple for any Alt-Country fan.

I'm not quite as impressed by the other 2 SV albums, so start here.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Cd.......2006-07-14

This is an awesome cd. It has everything you could hope for in a good country-ish album. "Windfall" by Son Volt is one of my absolute favorite songs. It combines so many different elements, but it comes out sounding collective. If you are looking for a cd that you can play all the way through this is a great choice.

4 out of 5 stars Searching for a Truer Sound?.......2006-07-09

This is it! Of all the alt country I own (Wilco, Golden Smog, Jayhawks, Ryan Admas, etc...) this is tops. It's the perect blend of country & rock. Windfall, the album's best track, is a beautiful song and the rest of the album is both sad and uplifting at the same time.

This is what country music should be.

It's no surprise that the best cuts on Songs About Me are produced by Scott Hendricks, the man who gave Trace Adkins his major-label deal and best understands the psyche of a 6-foot-6 Louisianan with a past full of close calls, high emotions, and deep soul searching (getting shot and nearly dying, later going to rehab). Adkins, with his tender-tough, bottom-of-the-riverbed baritone, sings country music because he's lived its eventful story songs. That's something he celebrates in the title song, which deftly lays out the reasons for the genre's popularity, even to folks who wouldn't ordinarily gravitate to the twangy side of the radio dial. Perhaps anyone could make that song a hit, but it takes a singer of far more subtlety to deliver the incredibly well-written (by Jeremy Spillman and Dave Turnbull) "Arlington," a uniquely different type of war song. Elsewhere, Adkins runs the gamut of themes, from the heartfelt ballad "I Learned How to Love from You" to the randy "Baby I'm Home" to the high-octane "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" (produced by Dann Huff). If some of it seems like awfully familiar territory, Adkins elevates it to the art of blue-collar soul. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Listening and Watching Trace always makes me happy........2007-06-27

He is a wonderful entertainer and all these songs are great. If you love country music like I do, then you will enjoy this CD, "Songs About Me". Trace is one of those entertainers who does his own thing and enjoys doing it. You can tell that when you see him in concert and you can tell that when you listen to this CD. Any country music fan would enjoy all the music.

1 out of 5 stars Music for the imbred or those that just have no clue.......2007-05-09

There is so much to say about this album. Unfortunatly nothing good.

To those who are harping on that poor woman who calls Trace and Toby 'exploiters', she is exactly right. There is no glory or honor in an illegal war. People who are in suits are making a lot of money off exploiting the military. Why do I say this? For those who don't know me I am a US Marine and I am on my second tour of Iraq. My own personal opinion is that songs like 'Arlington' make me want to vomit. 90% of the businesse that hang their 'We support the Troops' banners in military towns don't care two cents about us, they just want our money. The same goes with these heart tugging patriotic songs sung by people who have no clue what we go through. All they know about Iraq is coming over here and being treated ike a VIP and having their butts kissed by the brass. If Trace sinerely appreciates the troops fine, but let me give him and all the rest of you some advice. I (and others who serve) are sick of hearing it, because most of it is fake. Don't sing a song and laugh your way to the bank at my expense. Enough of that.

The title track 'Songs about me'? I agree with a fellow reviewer. Trace lost any credibility he had to sing a song like this that was written by someone else. The writer could have gotten Tim McGraw to sing this. This is a paint by numbers tune that has no merit or any form of sincerity. So he sings 'Songs about me' which could have been titled "Written for me" or "Songs about anybody needing a hit". And I'm supposed to beieve this guy believes in a song like Arlington? This is like Stephen King asking Dean Koontz to write his autobiography.

Now let's get to the song that made thi album a success, "Hony Tonk Badonkydonk". The first time I heard this I thought it was Weird Al Yankovic with a cold. When I found out it was a serious song written by a serious(?) country musician, I didn't know whether to laugh or wonder if the guy was on crack. "Got it goin' on like Donkey Kong?" "Whoo-wee slap your grandma"? I find it hard to believe that this song was written, produced, performed, and recorded by adults. This is not country folks, this isn't even white trash trailer music, I don't know what the heck this is. The best way I can describe this is that "Honkytonkbadonkeydonk" is the "Achy-Breaky Heart" of the 21st Century.

1 out of 5 stars oh man this is just terrible.......2007-04-21

It's really funny that the title track of "Songs About Me" is written by...somebody else. Lots of artistic merit there, kids.

This is really bad music. All of it. Overly slicky, crappy production, digitized to the nth degree, bad singing, cheesy playing, horredous songs about as far removed from country music as humanly possible. The only thing that qualifies this album/artist as "country" is that it shares the same redneck attitudes with most modern country fans.

This isn't really a direct attack on Trace Adkins: he's just a perfect symbol of the current state of mainstream country music--an artist whose songs are hollow and without value, sold to people who don't know any better under the false pretense that this is the kind of music that speaks to, or for, them. Which is a real tragedy. Country music, when it reaches its highest peaks, is a great and beautiful art form. But this guy and his dozens of behatted and sleeveless bretheren, well, they just make my soul hurt. Selah.

4 out of 5 stars Songs About Me, Oh Yeah.......2007-02-07

Ok, I admit that I have fallen in love with Trace's voice, it is just one of those raspy, deep voices that makes me melt, the fact that he is tall and not hard on the eyes doesn't hurt either. After hearing the first single, Songs About Me, off his new CD on the radio got me excited about the new music coming out and he didn't disappoint. From the title track to the final Honky Tonk Badonkadonk this CD is full of ballads and fun songs that Trace does so well. His emotions come thru on his songs.

5 out of 5 stars My First Trace Adkins CD.......2007-01-09

I've always enjoyed Trace Adkins' music but had never bought any of his CD's. When I bought this I knew there were several songs I would enjoy, but there were others I'd never heard before so it was a bit risky. Since then, I've bought two other Trace Adkins CD's but still enjoy this one the best!

5 out of 5 stars I agree (buy this album).......2007-07-11

I don't usually review items but had to stop when I saw this CD had only one review. Paul Durham's voice was made for rock, and the sort of beats/instrumentals that accompany his lyrics are amazing.

This is what rock should be.

5 out of 5 stars Why Is No One Listening To This Amazing Band?.......2007-06-08

I must admit, over the past several years I have become a diehard Black Lab advocate. Paul Durham and Andy Ellis (who self produce) continually deliver first-class music with depth that sadly, most people never have the opportunity to hear. Their previous effort, 'See the Sun', was simply awe-inspiring (Highest Recommendation) and I couldn't wait until the arrival of their next CD.

'Passion' (quietly released in Jan. 07) is spilling over with emotion filled vocals and inspired lyrics that bond with listeners. The amazing opening track, 'Mine Again' reminiscing about memories of a loved one willing to do anything to get them back is a song that will not leave your head and DESERVES radio exposure. Remorse echoes throughout the killer drum beat driven song, `This Night' (Used in the FX Promo for The Shield Season 6) that had me hitting the repeat button over and over. Hiding in the middle of the CD is the very heart of 'Passion'. The ethereal and staggering , 'Weightless'. Paul Durham weaves magic on this song and it will knock your socks off. `Ghost In your Mind', `The Real You', and 'A Day Alone' round out the highlights of the disc.

Although the CD may falter on the last few tracks, as a whole it surpasses most of the pathetic fare heard on the radio today and deserves your attention and your ear. Don't Miss it!

For Comin' on Strong, Adkins rejoins producer Scott Hendricks, who discovered the rangy Louisiana native in the '90s, signed him to a recording contract, and helmed his initial hits. On Chrome, Adkins's previous release, producer Dan Huff had taken him the predictable pop route--and scored a top five album--but apart from his perfect fit with blue-collar themes, Adkins never sounded completely at home with the album's gussied-up backgrounds. Now Hendricks brings him back to a rootsier sound and makes the most of his distinctive, deep-sea baritone, the likes of which country hasn't heard since Ed Bruce's early-'80s hits. "Missing You," which captures the loneliness of a oil driller far from home, is one of several tunes that show a new maturity and believability in the singer's material, just as "I'd Sure Hate to Break Down Here" and "One Nightstand" again prove Adkins's ability to convey vulnerability in an ultra-masculine fashion. Yet none of those tracks are likely to receive as much attention as "Hot Mama," a tune of middle-aged lust that's sure to keep Adkins popular with both polyester-clad Wal-Mart shoppers and jaded radio programmers, the real gatekeepers of any country singer's career. --Alanna Nash

That cocky smile he has that can melt a woman's heart is evident thru out the CD packaging and on the CD cover. You can almost hear it in some of the songs as you listen to the tracks. Two of Trace's latest hits are featured on the CD, Red Hot Mama, along with Rough & Ready. They are the first and last songs on the CD, but the songs in between are worth listening too also.

Trace Adkins is deservedly one of country's brightest young stars of the late 1990s, a new-school traditionalist with a strong voice that prowls the octaves, and songs that empathize with country's working-man roots. Most importantly, though, he has an excellent sense of humor--Adkins's songs delight in clever wordplay, double entendres, and smart, funny lines that might make even non-country fans smile. The highlight here is the country hit "I Left Something Turned on at Home," which as you might suspect, isn't the iron, but rather his wife. Elsewhere he hits all the traditional themes: tough guys falling in love, cheatin' spouses, and odes to Texas. --David Daley

This guy has a wonderful deep voice, and I also have practially worn this CD out from playing it so much! My favorite song is also "I Left Something Turned On At Home". I first heard the song on a multiple artist CD and loved it, so immediately bought this CD and after this one eventually bought all of his CD's. They are all great! Trace Adkins is great to listen to, and also not unfortunate to look at either!

5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational CD!!!.......2003-05-23

Trace has a distinctive voice that you know is him when you hear it. His ballads as well as his honky-tonkers are great. If you buy this CD, you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Every Light in the house is on.......2002-01-09

I thought that Every Light In the House is on is the best song that he has ever writin. This is the cd you should buy if you want one to listen to. He is a great artist and I think that this song is the perfect song for a lot of families. If you want to hear a great song, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2001-03-04

Trace Adkins debut is totally rockin'. He has a different sound from the usual country sound. He brings with him some awesome lyrics to go with his pure baritone voice. The Violin player rocks too. Guitars are sweet... everything fits together nicely. Another cool thing about him is how the songs are witty and funny in a way. Mr. Adkins is by far my favorite "country" artist and maybe one of my favorite artists in any genre of music. So, grab the CD if you like country or not cause if you dont I'm sure this will turn you on to it.

Graced with one of 2001's most distinct voices, Adkins begins by sinking his leathery growl into the title number--a rap track, but one possessing enough wit to avoid falling into gimmickry. From there, the curve is upward. The hit "I'm Tryin'," a simple inspirational message wrapped in a complex arrangement, possesses strength and integrity too rarely seen in hit singles. Adkins's real-life blue-collar past imbues "Thankful Man" with a believability missing when such songs wind up in the hands of singers from middle-class college backgrounds. While keeping the otherwise mundane "Scream" and "Once a Fool Ago" above water, he rises above the norm with "I'm Goin' Back." This take on the timeless country-boy-hates-the-big-city scenario succeeds on every level, even if the word "discern" seems a bit out of place. The excruciating anguish of "Help Me Understand" and the self-explanatory "Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow" exemplify power ballads done right. The message? One can make a record that reconciles the normally disparate virtues of commerciality and honesty. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! BUY THIS CD!!.......2004-01-04

This is the cd that introduced me to the wonder of Trace Adkins. I'd never heard him until i heard the songs "Tryin'" and "Help Me Understand" on the country radio station. That song is a power ballad that just rips my heart out every time i hear it. There is such pure honesty and conviction in his voice when he sings this song. I don't know how anyone can't be moved by this song. "Tryin'" is another amazing power ballad that is an inspirational song about not giving up when life constantly throws obstacles at you. It's also very moving in the way Trace delivers it. The opening track "Chrome" is amazing! He starts the song with a sexy growl and sings about cars and his big black Mack truck. He talks about the truck in a very sexy way, and about a woman who loves trucks and cars. It is very much a novelty song for Trace, as it's probably the closest thing to "country-rap" from Trace that you'll hear, but Trace pulls off the song with confidence and it's a fun song. There is not ONE bad track on the cd. Every single track is amazing and great! The cd is loaded with hit singles, many that didn't get released but should have. What i love most about Trace Adkins is that his voice doesn't sound like any male out there in country at all. He's a one-of-a-kind original with his amazing rich baritone voice. This guy sings pure country from his heart and soul. This cd sold me on Trace Adkins and i bought many of his earlier cds too, and they are all great! This guy was inducted into the country music hall of fame and i'm really happy about that. You can tell from seeing him in interviews and listening to the way he sings that here is NOTHING phoney or fake about Trace Adkins! The guy is a good person and has a good heart, which shines in his music. His honesty and purity of voice makes his songs of love or loss or heartache that much more believeable. Trace, you have a fan for life. Can't wait to get your latest cd. I hear it's even better than Chrome. I find that hard to believe you can top this cd, but if you can, then WOW! Your Chrome cd is total perfection! I'd rate it higher if i could.

4 out of 5 stars Not enough.......2003-08-25

I'm a great fan and loved the CD. I just have one complaint. Not enough of the great songs were made into singles and videos. Many didn't hear the best songs from this album. Chrome was not my favorite song on the album. The best song was the last song not the first.......Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow was by far the best and would have been a hit as a video or single.

4 out of 5 stars Trace Adkins: another cliche?.......2003-06-19

The biggest challenge of male country music singers today is BEING UNIQUE. After hearing so many singles and buying so many albums, one singer seems to melt into the next, with nothing to differentiate them. So the question is: does Trace have what it takes to separate himself from the herd? This is not so easy to answer. His barritone voice, like Eddie Montgomery's from Montgomery Gentry, is sexy and unique- he should use it more! Every now and then a low note is hit but besides that, he stays in a normal range. As per the songs, the more I listen to the cd, the better they are. Yes, some songs in the middle of the cd seem to drag and melt into each other, but for the most part, Trace Adkins provides some unique material, such as "I'm Goin' Back"- I've never heard anything like it! So has he separated himself from the pack? He's on the right track, but he definitely has room for improvement.

4 out of 5 stars Good Compliation of his hits.......2007-02-17

I bought this CD specifically because I wanted several of Trace's hits on one album. I cannot give it a 5 because it includes 4 too many versions of Honky Tonk Badonkadonk. I just can't listen to the same song done over with different background sounds. Otherwise I love it.

5 out of 5 stars REEL COUNTRY MAN.......2007-02-01

A great CD, Trace Adkins, big man, great voice and an excellent range of varied songs on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Mix of the Meaningful and the Fun.......2006-11-15

This is the best album Trace has done. It is pretty rare that I can enjoy an entire album but this was one great song after another. I bought this before a long drive and it sure helped pass the time.

While the term sound-alike easily applies to quite a few singers, Trace Adkins's husky, thoroughly honest baritone is among country's most distinctive and compelling voices. The opening title song of More... sets an optimistic tone that continues with "I'm Gonna Love You Anyway" and "Can I Want Your Love." Contrasting with the jocular Western swing of "All Hat, No Cattle," which pairs Adkins with Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, is the eloquent, authoritative blue-collar homage "Working Man's Wage," free of the posturing that often undermines similar songs. True, George Jones could work wonders with "The Night He Can't Remember," yet Adkins, a cowriter, more than does it justice. Not that he sidesteps sorrow. The bittersweet "She's Still There" and the painful "Don't Lie" face it head-on. "Every Other Friday at Five" takes an uplifting look at the responsible side of divorced fatherhood. Adkins's ability to navigate the decidedly dicey waters of Nashville while maintaining a rock-ribbed traditional perspective reflects talent for the long haul. --Rich Kienzle

4 out of 5 stars He has certain appeal.......2007-03-18

He is quite unique in the way he writes & sings!

5 out of 5 stars A seasoned and diverse artist. He's getting better every CD!.......2001-11-08

On his third CD, Trace delivers a well-balanced set of songs which range from slow to fast and straight country to rock country. There is something on this CD for everybody from serious to fun. The CD starts off rocking with the title cut which is truly one of the best songs. Other songs carrying that classic upbeat "Trace Groove" are Can I Want Your Love and I Can Dig It. There are countless slower and mid-tempo songs that lyrically stand-up on there own touching on issues from handling divorce, Every Other Friday At Five to respect for the working man, Working Man's Wage , which Trace says he did for his father. Add Trace's vocal to the mix and you've got all around solid country music. Of course several deal with love and heartache such as I'm Gonna Love You Anyway, Don't Lie and Everything Takes Me Back which are all excellent songs.

And of course, every cowboy should love All Hat, No Cattle which Trace recorded with Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel. He says the song is as much poking fun at himself as it is anyone else. He says even though he doesn't own a ranch that being a cowboy, in his opinion, is an attitude, the way you live your life and a frame of mind.

This is an all around solid CD that I take with me on the road along with Trace's second CD, Big Time. They are the kind of CD's that I know every lyric on them.

4 out of 5 stars he's got a great voice, without a doubt!.......2001-10-02

I've bought the first two Trace's CD and really got stunned by his voice and rythm, this release is no exception, great songs, love it!

5 out of 5 stars Not a country and western fan - but.......2000-11-05

Heard a cut on the radio and decided to sample listen on Amazon. I think he has one of the most natural pure voices I have heard in a long time. His song "Every Other Friday At Five" made my eyes get wet! If a Hollywood producer were to make a movie on divorce, this should be the title cut. I have bought his other two CD's too. They are all winners. I can't get enough of listening to his music. I think I'll be a fan for life.
