The Isle of View [Live]
Editorial Reviews

There are a lot of diehard Pretenders boosters out there who'll warm to this unplugged hits set much faster than Last of the Independents. Hynde's singing has never been finer, and it was a brilliant stroke to incorporate a string quartet into the acoustic soundscape. Everything here is first-rate (notably the little-known "I Hurt You" and "Criminal"), but it's the ultra-fresh versions of "Brass in Pocket," "Private Life," and "2000 Miles" that will bring a lump to the throat of thirtysomething fans. --Jeff Bateman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Bring on the revolution.......2006-04-02
Chrissie Hynde's bad attitude was always more refreshing than most - she has no patience for celebrity, no desire to sugarcoat her "message," barely even a desire to give anyone asking her a question the time of day. One of the great shocks of The Isle of View, then, is Hynde's vulnerability in full play. It's an acoustic set, but it's an coustic set of a particular bent - the guitar parts of old get morphed into string arrangements, and on occasion, the songs themselves morph in tone. The result is remarkable - it's not just a shift in tone during a song like "Back On The Chain Gang," it's a somber, moving refocusing of that song's true nature of loss and nostalgia. The best moments of the album are like that - versions of "Kid," "Sense of Purpose," or "2000 Miles" that take the songs in directions you didn't realize they'd gone all along, which proves just what a deft poet Chrissie Hynde can be. It needs to be said that not all the moments are perfect - the laconic version of "I Go To Sleep" is just laconic, and the rejiggering of their obscure debut album song "Lovers Of Today" might only prove that the song should have been forgotten in the first place. Still, by the time Hynde arrives at her last extraordinary "Freedom!" in "Revolution," the strings blazing with galvanic charm, it gets difficult to imagine a much better live attempt than this one - a winning, sly, cleverly concocted minimalist set.
Warm Intimate and Rewarding.......2005-12-01
I am a lukewarm Pretenders fan, enjoyed the first three albums, felt they lost a bit along the way after that, but still always willing to give Chrissie and friends the benefit of the doubt.
Here they turn in a surprisingly strong live, acoustic set, covering old, new, and forgotten songs from their catalogue, with tasteful backing from a string quartet. Some tunes work better than others: "Private Life" and "I Hurt You" work especially well, as Chrissie's mournful voice mixes perfectly with the delicate acoustic guitar and string backup. "Back on the Chain Gang," on the other hand, is a bit awkward and forced.
But with picture-perfect versions of "2000 Miles," "Chill Factor," and a strong opener, "Sense of Purpose," this is overall a very strong addition to the Pretenders canon, worth picking up for its unique and somewhat experimental handling of these classic songs.
A surprisingly good acoustic set.......2004-08-03
This little gem snuck into The Pretenders' discography after Chrissie took a latter day incarnation of The Pretenders on an A&E concert TV special. (That show is available as "The Isle Of View" DVD.) The surprise is just how effective and intimate Chrissie sounds in the "Unplugged" setting. She split the set between obvious songs and crowd pleasers ("Brass In Pocket," "Back On The Chain Gang") a surprise or two (I always thought "Sense Of Purpose," the best song on "Packed," was unjustly ignored -- and here it's the show opener), and some delightful reworks. In particular, the string laden version of "Kid" here takes on a greater sense of maturity some twenty years down the line. While I'd have a hard time recommending "The Isle Of View" as the most potent of Pretenders albums, it remains a personal fave of mine for more relaxing moments. If you're just getting into 80's or The Pretenders' music, start with their debut, "Learning to Crawl" or the updated (and import only, come on Warners) greatest hits. But if you're already a fan and this one slipped under your radar, "The Isle Of View" is a serious contender for your listening dollars.
Unplugged with strings.......2004-07-17
This is nice but not spectacular. It is the pretenders of 1996 playing acoustic instruments and being backed with a string quartet. The CD is 58 minutes long. The "bonus" track is 15 seconds of silence and 30 seconds of spacy violin music.
The sound quality is good. There isn't a lot of talk between songs and the audience noise is kept to a minimum. You do have to wait through a minute of cheering at the beginning of the CD before any music starts. The Pretenders at that time is basically the same personnel that is playing today. Say the title 3 times very fast.
Note that this is also available as a DVD.
This is very nice music, but kind of disappointing. First off, this is basically the hits. There are no new songs. There are a couple that don't get played much, so that is nice. And second, for the most part, nothing is added to the songs to make them that much different than the originals. It is just the original songs with the electrical guitars missing. A song like Chain Gang just becomes boring.
But, there are some great moments. Hynde's vocals are forced to carry the album, and they do so for the most part.
Some songs do get played in new and interesting ways. The older songs like Brass in My Pocket and Private Life have a new life on this album. (The best version of Private Life I have heard was done by Grace Jones).
This is not a bad album, and in fact is quite nice. And there are some very good parts to it. But, if you have all of the other Pretender albums, a lot of this CD is unnecessary. While the CD is not that special, the DVD might be. I haven't seen it, but I am thinking about buying it.

Nothing Today Comes Close.......2007-06-08
I want to give a nod to Mr Milliken above, as he would be one of the people who was responsible for my ever having heard, and later seen, Jimmy Spheeris back in the day. KBEY FM was *the* underground station here in KC, back when such anomalies of radio programming existed. Their later conversion to a Top 40 (Super Q!) format was traumatic for all of us long hairs here in KC. In fact, I still haven't gotten over it. Thanks, Mr Milliken et al, for having the foresight to bring an incomparable artist to the attention of the Midwestern musical youth all those many years ago.
I am in a band with six members, five of which went to high school together, graduating in 1974 and 1975. We perform "I am the Mercury" together, and have done so at parties and other functions outside of the current band format for the past 35 years. The performance of "Mercury" amongst people of a certain age never fails to bring a pricking up of their ears as a smile of warm familiarity slowly spreads across their faces. I can't even tell you how many times people have come up to me after a performance with a serene look on their faces as they thank us for playing a song that everyone assumed was long forgotten.
Jimmy Spheeris created absolutely timeless, achingly beautiful music. The saddest thing about his early passing was that he never quite acheived the fame he was due. His live shows were a marvel to watch as he flitted from tearjerking love songs to upbeat rock, throwing in a soft shoe routine during "Original Tap Dancing Kid", and then letting the love flow during "Let It Flow". He was a one in a billion artist, and no one - NO ONE - today is doing work of the quality that he so effortlessly performed and lovingly shared with we lucky few.
Buy this album, no matter the price. It changed me...if not my life, certainly my outlook on my life. There is truth and beauty contained within its tracks.
Isle of view, too........2007-05-11
Pour two glasses of dry red wine, run a warm bath, turn the lights out and light some candles, turn on Isle of View, and join your lover for pure pleasure (if not ecstacy.)
Worth if at any price!.......2006-09-22
If you're a true music fan this is one album you can't afford not to add to your collection. This CD is a true musical treasure. If you're lucky enough to find a copy, snap it up. You can get a download, but that's like xeroxing a copy of the Mona Lisa.
Isle of View.......2006-09-16
I first heard Jimmie in 1977 and Isle of View was just magical to me. He truly is one of the best artist that most people will never hear about, and his legend continues and always will. On Jackson Browne's CD Looking East, he mentions Jimmie in 'Barricades of heaven'. It's a great song, so check it out.
Download the music!.......2006-04-15
As at least one other reviewer has noted, you can download these songs. I got all the music for $9.99 from Musicmatch. They have his other albums, too! I know it's not as great as having the CD, but if you just want to hear this music -- and it's still wonderfully hypnotic stuff -- download it!

Much more than an "oldie goldie".......2004-12-03
This album is beautiful. I first listened to it in the 70's in college, but I love it more now at midlife -- not for its nostalgia value, but for its haunting melodies, beautiful instrumentation, and lyrics that go right to the heart. Jimmie Spheeris' voice is golden and sensuous....he comes across as a folk poet, a free spirit, with very little pretentiousness. This artist has affected me deeply. The more I listen to the album, the more I get from it -- its messages have only become richer and meaningful with time.
If you're having a hard time finding the CD, you can download them from the internet - I found my copy at AOL's Musicnet, for $9.90.
Sometimes dreams come true...........2004-11-19
The re-release of Jimmie Spheeris' CDs was a dream fulfilled and an act of love by his former sideman and Rain Records Producer, Johnny Pierce.
I wonder where Jimmie Spheeris would be now had he survived. His music certainly was ahead of its time. This CD is probably some of his more played works: "I am the Mercury", "Seeds of Spring" and "Nest" are the predominant songs.
If you like Dan Fogelberg's introspective and acoustic folk, you will love this CD.
Beautiful.......2003-03-14
I had the pleasure of seeing Jimmie Spheeris in concert at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Jimmie Spheeris played before an attentive crowd in an intimate setting. The music was calming and Jimmie's voice was beautiful. The audience was appreciative for a night with Jimmie Spheeris. I bought the vinyl Lp and played it daily. I loaned the album to a friend and it was never returned to my collection. I now have the ISLE OF VIEW on compact disc and listen every day. Jimmie's voice and lyrics along with the excellent musicianship make this a masterpiece. Thank you Jimmie Spheeris for all the music and the memories.
I love this CD........2003-01-25
I've loved this album most of my adult life. I loved it in college. I played it on my first date with an old friend. I wore the album out. I made a copy of it on cassette so I could at least hear it. I married the old friend and 21 years later we're still listening to it. I never thought I'd find it on CD.
Jimmie makes me feel like a kid again.
It was the best of times........2002-04-25
This exceptional album is the ultimate time machine. From the first notes of "...Mercury" I'm back in 1974: surrounded by great friends, working in a great (daytime) job, making great music and in love with a great girl. Thank you Jimmie for that wonderful music that marked forever the joy of my youth. This recording IS me in another time.
