On "String Theory" pianist/composer and sometime musical feminist Ursel Schlicht and guitarist, composer and educator Bruce Arnold team up for an outing of free improvisation that stretch the limits of both their instruments.

The two met at a Jazz festival in Monterrey Mexico and immediately felt an affinity for improvising with each other. Ms. Schlicht is one of a handful of contemporary players who are successfully using extended techniques to expand the vocabulary of the piano and who finds her true voice in these free expressions. Arnold has a field day reacting with his processed guitar to all of the acoustically generated sounds that Schlicht throws at him. Indeed in this recording, the juxtaposition of acoustic versus electronically generated sounds is one of its strongest characteristics.

Bruce Arnold is best known for his explorations into the possibilities of twelve tone applications to jazz improvisation. But here his use of guitar and SuperCollider, (an object oriented computer program that allows for unlimited sonic processing) takes center stage. Both artists go back and forth between straightforward playing, i.e. linear and tonal passages, and more avant sorties into texture and atmosphere. The two feed off each other with ideas and passages of remarkable coherence; it is a delight to witness interactions of this clarity.

    It's a treat to stumble across fresh guitar sounds and novel concepts, and guitarist Ken Hatfield offers both in his latest solo album, String Theory. Within this remarkable work are two intricately composed duets, each presented as a three-part suite. One is a musical dialog between a fingerstyle nylon-string and a resonator slide guitar, the other between a nylon-string and a tinkling mandolin. In these duets, Hatfield performs both parts, overdubbing each in one pass to preserve a live feel. The timbral mix of nylon and whining reso is as striking as it is unusual. The classical's crisp attack contrasts so beautifully with the Dobro's whining slurs and liquid holler, one wonders why this pairing hasn't been explored more deeply. String Theory also contains two extended solo-guitar suites. The first begins with a brief, but haunting piece of counterpoint, followed by 12 variations that move from shades of baroque to hip bossa-flavored chording. Boasting seven movements, the second suite is equally diverse, with fingerstyle jazz sharing airtime with intensely polyphonic fingerpicking. Throughout String Theory, Hatfield's playing is brainy, dynamic, and relentlessly melodic.

    I got this album thinking that it was going to blow me away with complexity, melody....anything... but I must not get it. I don't see much more than noise and odd editing. I keep listening to it in hopes that some day it will just click and I'll be enlightened by it, but until that day...

    Every once in a long while, something comes along that has the power to change a life. Or if not change a life, at least greatly influence it. I still remember where I was the day I first heard The Azusa Plane because I'm still feeling its impact, years later. As a musician, I (along with the rest of the world of musicians and music afficionados) spend my days always holding out hope for something new--something to alter the vast and often dreary landscape of contemporary music with its brilliance, its innovation, its importance. Most aspire to reach that plateau of inventive genius. Few ever do. Jason Diemilio, the sole creative force behind The Azusa Plane, is one of those few. Strikingly modest in his praise of influences and contemporaries alike, Diemilio's demeanor is the very picture of a man with no idea how important his contribution is. His entire approach (from the low-tech, improvisational manner in which he records, to the forming of his own independent record label) displays an artist for whom self-expression is the only motivation, and for whom any thought of commercial recognition is simply non-existent. Piling on layers of dreamy, droning guitars (and throwing in the occasional vacuum cleaner for effect), The Azusa Plane is not so much your typical dinner music as it is music for the mind. Never has a mystical collage of sound seemed so palpable, or practically visible to the mind's eye. And although The Azusa Plane certainly isn't for everyone (most great art isn't), you will never look back on the world of the standard 4/4 time signature the same after you've been exposed to this.

      Vermont based mandolinist/multi-instrumentalist Patton returns to the studio for his special blend of acoustic magic with Kings Hill Records release, "String Theory." Capturing the best of both worlds, European "Gypsy" jazz and Brazilian Samba/Choro, he expertly cooks a concoction of culinary pleasure in the same progressive direction of his previous two projects, "Lattitudes and Departures" and "Peripherique." Patton has truly mastered this delightful cosmopolitan recipe.

Jalamadi Tounkara's guitar fronts Mali's Rail Band (the group that served as the training ground for Salif Keita and Mory Kante in the late '70s and early '80s); Lafia Diabate replaced Kante as lead singer in the Rail Band as well. Bouba Sacko is an in-demand studio guitarist whose name appears on dozens of recordings by artists like Tata Bambo Kouyate and Ami Koita. They came together for one album and a tour, and this is the one precious memory you'll have of their collaboration. The guitar interplay is subtle, sinuous, and gorgeous. The voices swirl around it carefully and beautifully.       If you have yet to discover the pulsating, lolling rhythms of Mande music, this is a wonderful place to start. The artists on this CD are some of the superstars of Malian music and here they are at their incomparable best. Everything about this CD is tops, including the production. The music is quiet, contemplative, pulsating. One of the musicians here Djelimady Tounkara has become famous recently as the subject of Banning Eyre's terrific book, "In Griot Time". Read the book, listen to the music, drift away . . .
