Pigeonhed

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
If you've ever wondered what a Prince-fronted, techno-nerd- controlled orchestra would sound like--and who hasn't?--Pigeonhed provides all the answers. The elegant, falsetto-prone vocals of Shawn Smith (who has also fronted Satchel and Pearl Jam-spinoff Brad), swoop in and out of the freeform structures erected by studio whiz Steve Fisk, lighting randomly atop bits of movie dialogue, sound effects, and cyber-beats. The ensuing chaos makes for a fascinating listen, but aside from the genuinely soulful "Her," the defiantly Dada bent makes Pigeonhed best suited for folks with a high tolerance for high art and/or those "Magic Eye" picture collections. --David Sprague --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars A decent cd........2007-03-27

I enjoyed this album. the music was good but my favorite two are The Full Sentence and Phunpurephun. Those are ones I really like.

5 out of 5 stars Top 10 all time favs.......2006-03-28

It takes a lot for an album to really trip my wires but this one does it, and then some. I'm a huge fan (like all the other reviewers, I know..) of Shawn Smith's other projects- Brad and Satchel are both outstanding groups and their music fills a huge void in contempory American Music- namely emotional, soulful and intelligent music that you can both immerse yourself in or just really groove too. What sets "The Full Sentence" apart is that it blends all those characteristics with some heavy funk and dance rythms and several of the songs just make me wanna...well, you know.

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2003-11-19

one of my favorite albums of all time...came on here to buy for a friend because its hard to find in the stores.

1 out of 5 stars Not to be compared with Brad and/or Satchel.......2002-10-03

I am a big fan of Shawn Smith. I purchased both Pigeonhead CD's without hearing any of the music. Shame on me. I simply recommend that someone that enjoys Brad or Satchel try to listen to a sample of the Pigeonhed music before purchasing. It is synthesizer driven and very different from the other music I have heard from Mr. Smith. I am moved by his vocals on all other CD's I've heard from him, however, it is my opinion that his vocals do not overshadow the music. If you like synth and techno maybe this CD is for you...just not me.

5 out of 5 stars Another amazing ride from Shawn and CO...........2000-06-23

With a taste of each album from Shawn Smith, I find myself thanking God I am not deaf. This is an artist who is not afraid to let his magic work shine. Every song is original and grabs it's listener in some way. I am glad to know about him and all of his glorious work, and I pass it on to everyone I know. GET IT, LOVE IT, SHARE IT!

3 out of 5 stars This one was ok........2007-03-27

I've only listen to this whole album once. Ever since then, I havent listen to it again. I need to go back and listen to it so I can pick my favorite one(s). But I still think "The Full Sentence" still is the best one so far.

2 out of 5 stars Is that all there is?.......2006-03-24

This album has some decent elements on it...the incredible voice of Shawn Smith, and some of the songs have some funky beats, but its too primitive, sparse and monotonous. The beats sound like a guy who was up to his ears in the no-frills gunge scene got his hands on a drum machine and thought it would be cool to make a record. The beats are simply not great. It comes off kind of like sparse trip-hop (one song reminded me a little of Soul II Soul). Also, several songs keep the same beat throughout. There aren't 'parts' to the songs. Smith was probably still developing his vocal sound at that time, and spends much of his time in the falsetto range, which is treated with a strong reverb effect, causing him to sound light and ethereal. He doesn't dig into his dirty blues style here, and frankly, it probably wouldn't fit if he did, but I miss that facet of his voice I've grown to love through the bands Brad and Satchel. But the music and the vocals don't compliment each other. Shawn's voice floats above the dank sounding beats, and there never seemed to be much play between the two. It lacks the dynamics of the song "Battle Flag"; the only other Pigeonhed song I was familiar with before I got this CD.

The summary effect is an experimental sounding album. Maybe good for being introspective by yourself. THere's kind of a sensual vibe (mostly from the vocals), so some might like to be with their woman (or man) to this CD but I wouldn't pull it out at a party, unless you want people to go home.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the effort.......2003-06-23

Shawn Smith is said to have discovered his voice singing along to Prince songs in the shower, a detail which seems very appropriate after hearing this album. Smith's voice is one that has kept me following him over the years across several different projects that he's worked on, and it doesn't hurt that he tends to work with other talented musicians.

On this album you'll find producer Steve Fisk and a little bit o' guitar supplied by Kim Thayil of Soundgarden fame. The combination of Shawn Smith and Fisk is incredible. Fisk's production is very murky and is constantly tugging at the melody that Smith has laid down, and vice versa. The dynamic works so well for me that I have consistently pulled this album out over the last 7 years since I bought it, and I'm still almost as excited about it as I was then.

    4 out of 5 stars Straaaaaange.......1999-10-05

This is a stone in the church of music. You discover the marvellous voice of the great Shawn Smith and you can immagine what will arrive later.... Satchel, Brad, and more. Buy it and continue the discover of my favourite voice.

4 out of 5 stars Shawn Smith is amazing.......2002-04-04

If you're unfamiliar with any of Shawn Smith's other works (2 albums by Brad, a few more by Satchel, 2 other Pigeonhed releases, and a solo release), let me suggest that this be the last album you buy. Not that is bad by any means, just different.

"Pigeonhed's Flash Bulb Emergency Overflow Calvacade Of Remixes" is the full name of the album (Which Amazon does not disclose in the description or title). As the title suggests the album is a bunch of Pigeonhed songs remixed with more techno beats and electronica.

I fully enjoy listening to "Flash Bulb Emergency Overflow", but it makes better background music than "pure listening pleasure" music. This is in contrast to other works by Shawn Smith which seem to draw emotions from the listener- emotions that range from the urge to dance in your skivvies to crying over a beer thinking about your last few girlfriends...

      5 out of 5 stars wow..............1998-07-28

The first time I heard the song "Battleflag" I thought it was Jamiraqaui's new single but then I realized that what I was listening to far surpassed Jamiraquai's standard. The song is full of great grooves and plenty of rappalicious lyrics. Go for it.
