Nevermind

If Nevermind's sound is familiar now, it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to cop its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball, from the punk-turbo-charged riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" onward, magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar. Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like this one; of its 12 songs, roughly 10 are now standards. The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking. --Douglas Wolk --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

THE RESURRECTION OF ROCK !.......2007-07-24
Without a doubt, Nirvana's Nevermind (1991) is a landmark in rock music. In the 1980's, rock music tailored it's sound and image to cash in on the abundant Amercan Yuppie dollar, and in the process became corporate, sanitized, and devoid of authentic rebellion, defiance, or unconventional passion. Sure, the metal of the eighties was fun, but it didn't really speak to the misplaced, the disaffected, or the anguished. Nevermind was a cinder block that crashed through the plate glass window of Corporate Rock Music, Inc. It literally changed the face of popular music and culture in the 1990s. The album features hard rocking pop melodies with dark lyrics, and plenty of attitude. In fact, the attitude is the main attraction here. It's pure, honest, doesn't compromise, or have time to be reasoned with. Their anthem Smells Like Teen Spirit opens the album with wildly energetic hard rock and lyrics expressing the alienation and discontent of youth in the new world order. Lithium is another hard rocker with a strong melody and great lyrics, "I love you, I hate you, I'm not gonna crack!". It's one of the better songs on the album. In Bloom and Come As You Are rock steady as the catchy melodies carry most of the weight. Breed and Territorial Pissings are fast and frantic. Kurt Cobain's vocals and guitar are legendary, but bassist Krist Novoselic is also very good, and drummer Dave Grohl is fantastic as he pounds out the rhythm in a powerful and manic declaration of expression. Nirvana goes acoustic on the creepy Polly, where Cobain plays the role of a rapist, and the resigned and sorrowful Something In The Way, which also features an eerie cello playing in the background. Drain You and Stay Away are rock n' roll blizzards with layers of multi-tracked guitar crunch. On A Plain is a melodic proclamation of individual defiance that has a creative guitar sound. Nevermind is a high energy tempest of alienation, indifference, and in-your-face defiance that sounds as pure, exuberant, and authentic as any rock music album ever recorded. It's Nirvana's best by far, and it's one of the most important and influential albums ever released in popular music. Don't believe me? Ask Night Ranger, Def Leppard, Ratt, Poison, Quiet Riot, or Motley Crue. If you can find them.
One star raters are the coolest...........2007-07-18
Hi, I've never gotten tired of any song on this album. It's loud, obnoxious, funny, tuneful, and entertaining. Everyone on here over analyzes this album because they feel that they have to "set the masses straight." Listen, if you're new to Nirvana... this is their breakthrough album. You'll see that a ton of people tend to dog this album because they're enangered by the fact that most people don't like whatever kind of leather, or spiked hair enducing music that THEY listen to. The fact is that this is the first aggressively hard pop record ever made with any ammount of success to it's name. The fact that every one who has followed this albumn and has been blasted on the radio sucks, is not in fact the bands fault... it's the fault of record companies trying to milk the sound that originated from them by selling [...] music to consumers. This album is beyond good... it's not "depressing" as people might have you believe. The depression from that era came from every other band who came out AFTER NIRVANA---namely Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden who were all serious and mentally unstable. Though Kurt was unstable, he had the good sense of making fun of it all with jokes and puns rather than crying about it. So now that I've set you straight, I hope that you'll give this album the chance it deserves instead of listening to the one star raters who purposely give this album no credit to piss people off and to be considered cool because they are different than the majority.
A Good album but not great!.......2007-06-29
This is by far one of the most overated albums of all time in my opinion. I love Nirvana, but to say this is there best album as others on this site and google sites say is insane. This is decent Nirvana but if you want to listen to there best album check out In Utero!!
defined an experience and sound for a decade.......2007-06-25
cobain was on track to be the lennon/mccartney, jagger/richards, westerberg, jones/strummer of his generation. sadly his suicide robbed the world of the great music he undoubtedly would have continued to make.
tough to coin an accolade for this work that has not been used before. in one album, cobain summed up the experience of a generation and defined the decade's dominant rock sound -- whether he wanted to or not. what amazes most, in listening to this and its follow-up 10 years later, is the impeccable songwriting. cobain seemingly was incapable of writing a song that was not infectious, or of writing lyrics that were not captivating.
Nevermind: Classic Rock Album.......2007-06-18
Nevermind was recently chosen by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 200 Definitive Rock albums of history. It certainly deserves this status. I was a teenager when this album was released and it certainly changed my life. The power, passion, angst, and emotion of the songs is what made it work for me and millions of other young people worldwide. As a teacher today I continue to see younger people influenced by this album and band. Forget the fact that it has sold 24 million copies worldwide and was chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved for all time, this is an album that has passion and energy and will be a classic for a long time to come. From the classics such as Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium and In Bloom...to other lesser known songs such as Drain You, On A Plain,. and Polly....this is an album that has to be in everyone's rock collection. For those who say this album is overated......compared to what? Music is very subjective. Nirvana were not Gods and they certainly were not perfect, but they helped to change the music industry and provide music that continues to inspire and influence people today.

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13
I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.
Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.
Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15
It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.
Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25
This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!
Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05
It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

amazing.......2007-04-28
I will agree with other reviews by saying this is very fun to listen to and it is very relaxing. Also I like listening to music while working but the singing always distracts me, this is perfect and I recommend any of the string quartet tribute albums because they are done very truthfully and with a nice tempo.
Search for your favourite band you might find a tribute, seriously they even did Slayer!!!
Pretty Cool.......2006-01-09
This isn't for those who like Nirvana solely for "Teen Spirit" and all that junk... My girlfriend laughs at me because I like to play this in my car, but really, it's quite different and very fun to hear the classic Nevermind performed in this way. A good aspect of it is that I can listen to Nirvana while studying... it helps me because there's no words in it whatsoever... i dont know... anyway, pick this up if youre a Nirvana fan... pretty cool and very worthwhile!! :)

Product Description
Nevermind is album number two for Clockcleaner, and number one for Reptilian – the label these triplets were born for. Heads are turning, and ears are burning. Nevermind’s sonic assault is a veritable landscape of Panzer tanks frolicking across the Polish countryside of Political Correctness and all things hallowed by delicate journalists and limp-wristed soundmen. Like the best of Midwest noise-rock from the era prior to the current one in which most bands wear eyeliner, Clockcleaner hammers on the clanging, sheet-metalled riffing, thudding out the low end with concussive drum n’ bass. At it’s most polite and generally appealing, this is as good as anything the Chicago or Minneapolis cranked out in the late eighties and early nineties. At it’s nastiest, this is Flipper or the Dwarves tossing unopened beer cans at your girlfriend’s unsuspecting face from the stage while feedback howls a few feet away. We at Reptilian like that kind of atmosphere; it’s how rock and roll should be. Nothing like a volley of bottles, cans, lit fireworks, and other projectiles to get the party started. So here’s to Clockcleaner keeping that spirit alive and well in the 21st century.

Bang baby.......2000-05-26
I think that this album is extremely different from most. It has hard fast drums and some of the lowest, best bass that I've heard in a while. I really enjoyed it.
Junkies Take Note!! Sheep on drugs-coming for your children!.......1998-07-29
. Sheep On Drugs continue their campaign to degrade and sully our nation's youth with the new EP Never Mind the Methadone, a selection of remixes from the infamous One For the Money. featuring some of Invisible's most engaging artists behind the wheel of the careening car-crash that is Sheep On Drugs. I'm pretty wary of remix albums since nine times out of ten they turn out to be crap, not progressing from the original (usually superior) versions and are good for only one or two listens before being regulated to the CD graveyard (ala Further Down the Spiral) .A fairly obvious money making ploy to sell the same album twice. Fortunately spittle-brained hellions Duncan , Lee. and mastermind Martin Atkins have more respect for their fans than that and N.M.T.M delivers a prime fix that'll leave you twitching and puking... Psychic TV general Larry Thrasher and industrial icky-man Genesis P-Orridge start it off right with a breakbeat decon! struction of the fabulous W.C.F.M., adding a new sense of heady urgency and despair to an already classic track. Life is just a game. takes you on a fairly unsettling cinematic journey thanks to treatments by Phylr's Jim Coleman and Not Breathing completely attack the amazing Crimetime with their patented blend of bass, beats and tribal wash producing something that's more than the sum of these two bands (This is also true of Not Breathing's pairing with Dead Voices on Air on the sedate, unsettling Fire in the Bronx Zoo). My favorite track from the original, Strange Days is even given a new breath by Bagman whose transmissions of heavy dub and synthesized horn create a fresh, serpentine groove for all your morning after comedowns. Add to this mixes by Marc Heal (Cubante) , Jordan Fields and Sheep On Drugs themselves and top it all off with a horrendous cover of AC/DC's Back in Black (a duel with labelmates Pigface) and you've got a dose that'll keep you going for an hour ! and leave you begging for one more shot.
