If you haven't caught up with Lush for a while, you may be astonished when you put this on. Songs. Hooks. Choruses. Singing--more or less in tune. Looks like Lush stopped glanced up from gazing at their shoes and saw that there was an audience wanting to be entertained. So they dug out their old new wave albums and got themselves inspired. The opener, "Ladykiller," is just that: a stone killer that sets the lyrical mood for the whole record--relationships gone sour, the way "boys" act, and how women can be strong. Real life or what? Musically, it's as though a picture has just finally come into focus. Lush always denied their poppy side. Here they've given it full rein, and the effect is glorious, catchy as hell, filled with clever arrangements, and only "Last Night" has any kind of spook quotient. Wonderful stuff. The new wave of new wave of new wave? No, just a new lease on life for Lush. Welcome back. --Chris Nickson --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
Most popular Lush album, but not the best........2006-12-10
As I said, Lush becomes increasingly less blurry through each of their albums. Spooky and Split had the best balance between clearness and echoey/blurriness. By the time Lovelife came out, they had lost most of their dreamy effects that made them truly "lush". I think Lovelife must have been their most popular album, but I don't think they really sound like themselves. They took on a kind of Austin Powers-like sound, complete with horns (like in Olympia). This also has their most punkish songs, and I am not into that.
It's not a bad album...I did get into pretty many songs. Ladykiller has some great energy. The Childcatcher has a simliar energetic feeling, and I really appreciated the lyrics, being 16 and having a friend lost to a "childcatcher" at the time. Tralala is a good "sad" song and Last Night is sexy and mysterious and moody. Runaway also is a good tune. These all must be my favorite songs on the album. I liked parts of most of the other songs, or some sections of them. So this is a decent album, but I still would recommend Split or Spooky, albums that are all-around great the whole way through. This album I would describe more as "cute", but not "beautiful" like the others.
Love this CD.......2006-11-02
I can not stop dacing to it. It's a must have for girls or guys who just want to have fun.

Queens of the ethereal finally go pop.......2005-11-07
Lush-Lovelife (1996) Queens of the ethereal, the band finally went pop with this album, and turned out to be its best. Also hailing from England, these shoe-gazers are Miki Berenyi (with hot-pink hair) and Emma Anderson on guitar and vocals. Their complex harmonies dominate the songs, and I never tire of listening to this. Their jangly, layered guitar-work and melodic solos are also pleasant. Lyrics deal with female insecurities, such as self-confidence and self-consciousness, but these women are no victims. They know how to empower themselves and use their sexuality to get what they want. With biting sarcasm and witty commentary, lyrics confront male/female relationship issues. From the minor hit, "Ladykillers": "I'm as human as the next girl/I like a bit of flattery/But I don't need your practised lines/your school of charm mentality..." And from "Heavenly Bodies," a song about idol worship: "I remember when I was younger I thought the answers were locked in people/So I admired the ones whose lives were a source of envy to people like me". "The Childcatcher" is a searing take on older men who romance younger girls: "You are like the clean white page and I the pen/The innocence I find between your girlish thighs is like the fountain of youth to my old bones." Sadly, this was their last album, as drummer Chris Acland committed suicide after a long bout with depression in 1997.
It was Lovelife.......2005-10-20

Not in the same style as 360 Urban Groove.......2006-04-13
I was disappointed in this album versus the previous one and don't recommeend it unless you've listed to it.
Wake up the JAzz in you.......2005-05-17
This cd is in my cd player 24/7 ...nobody could get me to like Jazz until this cd.
A good album for those who want varying tastes...........2004-12-29
My favorite track of all is the bonus track DJ Spinna Remix of "What Am I Gonna Do". This remix is slamming! Definitely popular with the New York style House music crowd.
Gotta Love "Lovelife".......2003-11-09
A couple of weeks ago I bought this CD after first hearing "The World To Me" on Jazztrax.com. I was intially hooked by that very beautiful tune, but I also loved "Ride, Ride, Ride" and "This Weekend." To tell the truth, I wasn't in love with the rest of the tunes for the first several times I listened to the CD. However, after giving it a chance, the music has grown on me quite a bit! Check out this CD, it's different, but very cool. I think you'll grow to love it!
A Definite Must Have!.......2003-09-12
If you want to familarize yourself with Jimmy Sommers his newest CD would be a wonderful way to begin a truly enlightening and inviting relationship. I own his other CDs and he just keeps getting better and better. Whether you just want to relax or get in the mood for something a little more intimate, this CD will do it all for you. I believe, no I know, this CD and his other CDs will not disappoint you. Great job Jimmy!

Wish they still made them like this.......2006-04-29
I knew these guys back in college when they were just starting out. Influenced by bands like The Cure, The Smiths, and Adorable, The Julies created their own sound that really captures that bittersweet, melancholy feeling that originally drew me to the alternative music scene of the late 80's, early 90's. All six tracks are great and form a cohesive whole that is a nice listen. My particular favorite is the fifth track Blue. There is not really anyone I know that is making music quite like this anymore--its a shame.
One of the finest modern Brit-Pop/Post-Punk releases.......2004-03-30
This album crossed my path back when I was doing college radio back in the late 90's, and it is one of the few that I still pull out to listen to now and then. In fact this album has had a contagious affect on many of my friends, who all have fairly distinctly varying musical tastes.
The closest comparison vocally that I can come up with is: Richard Butler's (Psychedelic Furs) rough style with plenty of Jim Irvin's (Furniture) tone.
The production has a nice balance of energy and subtle polish. In some ways the feel is similar to the John Hughes soundtracks "Some Kind of Wonderful" (Jesus and Mary Chain mixed with the March Violets) & "Pretty in Pink".
Lyrically, the album deals mostly with relationship between the perception of love (relationships/exploitation/delusion/etc) (Loosely) and & the media's (in various forms: Including the often neglected medium of paint-) influence on it. While not necessarily groundbreaking, it does not come off as being pretentious and works nicely overall.
I highly recommend this album to any fan of this genre.

A great album.Just enjoy it!.......2000-09-18
If you are a close observer to the british-pop music scene, you can't do nothing but feel sorry for the case of Lush.Spending the biggest part of their career in the background while other surely inferior bands like Sleeper,Meanswear and Shed Seven were winning more and more publicity every day,Lush kept recording really good records withought though finding someone to buy them.Things finally changed with the release of Lovelife, which did suprisingly good sales. Then bad luck stroke again. The drummer died in a car accident and the group eventually broke up.As for the quality of this album, power pop at it's best is what you'll get here.Take for example "Ladykillers", a super fun song where Miki, the bands lead singer simply trashes the egocentric behaviur of men in relationships."Save your breath for someone else and credit me with something more, when it comes to men like you i know the score i've heard it all before"she sneers.Or listen to the spicy arguement in "Ciao!" between her and her supposely ex Jarvis Cocker, the singer of Pulp.Ofcourse there's more to lush's agenda than boyfriend troubles.Just listen to the pure lyric-genius of "Heavenly Nobodies" a song about fake idols. This is probably the best album recorded by a british band in 1995.You might have never heard of Lush but take the risk and discover Lovelife. You 'll be suprised how much you'll enjoy it.
The Best Lush CD ever? Maybe..........2000-07-27
I fell in love with this CD when I first heard it and even now I contemplate buying another copy even though I have one. This CD is a natural progression from the early "shoegazers" music which mixed the vocal level somewhere below the instruments to a more conventional mix where the vocals are featured, and what lovely vocals they are! Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson are inspired and melodic. The music rocks and ranges from power pop to slower, but powerful songs. But its the lyrics where this really shines-these women sing of hard-learned lessons of love, friendship and life, and display a maturity not previously seen. It reminds me of No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom (without the ska) in its depiction of raw nerves and a tender, wounded soul. I don't think I've captured more than a pale reflection of the album, but I hope you'll give it a try!
pleasant record.......2000-07-16
This is a good deal for a good, solid album. Lush has great harmonies and I love their use of sleighbells and electronica on this record. Very mellow, but fun.
