The album that carries U2 into its 25th year--and likely the mixed blessings of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame--is one of its most frank and focused since the days of October and War. But its gestation was anything but simple, in part salvaged from '03 sessions the band deemed subpar. Enter Steve Lillywhite, the band's original producer and sometime collaborator in the decades since, who helped retool the track "Native Son" (originally an antigun screed) into the aggressive iPod anthem "Vertigo" and leaves his distinctive stamp on the muscular "All Because of You." Perhaps weary of ceaseless, fashion-driven reinvention in the wake of monumental success, U2 seem only too happy here to re-embrace their original sonic trademarks in service of more daring, pop-melodic hooks than they've collected in one place in decades. The Eno/Lanois produced "Love and Peace or Else" may shimmer with the duo's electro-production conceits, but it's Edge's lugubrious, postmodern John Lee Hooker guitar swagger that drives it. Elsewhere, Bono's trademark dramaturgy is spotlighted on "City of Blinding Lights," the unabashed romance of "A Man and a Woman," and the confessional "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own." It may come wrapped in a conundrum--is it nostalgic retrenchment or a sum of the band's endless musical catharsis?--It's also the album where, Fly and MacPhisto be damned, U2 boldly claims its arena titan mantle with apologies to no one. --Jerry McCulley

Losing their clarity, nothing you want to sing along with.......2007-06-29
I have been a fan of U2 for a long time. They are one of the great all time rock bands. But this album just does not do it for me. The sound is muddy. There are no clear, strong melodies. U2 made their name with stirring anthems, that combining idealism with clear, piercing music. Oh well, everybody has off days. This one is not a keeper.
U2-How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.......2007-06-18
Well, what can I say, it's U2. They really don't put out any crappy stuff. I like it.
Not so good........2007-03-15
A long-time U2 fan. I saw them when I was a student when they were playing the Hammersmith Odeon in London. There are only two good tracks on this album. "Vertigo" and "Sometimes you can`t make it on your own", although the second is beginning to sound like a repetitive theme. Vertigo is excellent, original sound and production, when I first heard it I loved it, not even knowing it was U2. Great energy. U2 should be embarassed about putting out such a mediocre album. Doesn`t anyone tell them, "hey.. that is not actually a good enough song to put out". I was in a band myself, sometimes a song was rubbish, and you just have to let it die. Not all babies are beautiful.
Very misleading.......2007-02-11
Doesn't actually tell you how to dismantle an atomic bomb. Very frustrating.
High Quality but no progression from A.T.Y.C.L.B.......2007-01-20
Firstly U2 are beyond legends and their success is almost undefinable. There has never been a band that have survvived this long and still been innovative. Sadly that innovation and newness that we associated with U2 is dying as they are a band artistically going backwards. Sure the diehards (and there's millions of them) will dispute this but i cant help get the impression thart Bono's politics and long periods away from the band is finally catching up with them as the end product seems rushed, forced, much too like A.T.Y.C.L.B. In other words a bit of a cookie cutter mail it in job. im not sure if there is much left in this band anaway. Maybe 2 albums at best. they have nothing to be ashamed of but maybe their time has come and they should go out on a high. The over-exposure of this band is what is killing it. people are getting tired of Bono's political speeches from the stage and even his voice is cracking at some of the gigs. Still U2 are the most heavily critiqued and criticized band in the world because they are still the best. Not by much any more but just about. Coldplay are right behind them and moving up fast and the british invasion #2 post punk movement is putting trememdous pressure on U2s relevancy. But like i said their crown will still have to be won and it could be a few years yet.

Bristling with excitement and electricity, this 1958 album represents the finest accomplishment of Count Basie's "New Testament" big band. His "Old Testament" band of the late 1930s, featuring stars Lester Young, Herschel Evans, Dickie Wells, and Buck Clayton, perfected the blues-drenched, straight 4/4 rhythm of Kansas City swing. Building on the blues foundation, this 1950s band features more ambitious compositions and a more dynamic sound and incorporates more modern developments. One constant, however, is the anchoring rhythm guitar of Freddie Green. As always, Basie can dig deeply into robust stride statements or choose each note as if he had to pay for them separately. Neal Hefti, the primary composer and arranger here, marvelously captures the strengths of each individual musician. His arrangements sparkle exuberantly on the up tunes and create vivid and exotic moods on the slower ones; clever and innovative without ever being overblown. Beefy tenor Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, who was only in the band for a relatively short period, offers the most valuable and vital solo contributions, recalling Ben Webster's tenderness at times, squeaking and honking like an R&B man at others. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Ever.......2007-06-09
Simply put, this is one of the finest big band albums ever made. It has everything you could think of going for it, outstanding musicians, and an arranger who was born for the Basie band.
There has never been a more complimentary arranger for any band than Neal Hefti was for Basie during their brief association. Hefti's own album "Hot 'N Hearty" is ample proof of what a superbly hip arranger he was and what he would later contributed to the Basie band. Hefti never followed trends. Like Pete Rugolo, he set them.
I'll forever be thankful to my dad for introducing this album to me in the somewhat poorly mastered stereo LP version when it was first released in the early days of home stereo. I still have that record and it features the entire band on the right channel and the Basie rhythm section on the left. If you listen to it with head phones it'll drive you nuts! The monaural version released for this cd is much better balanced.
Dang, what more can you ask for in a big band? You get burning swingers like "The Kid From Red Bank (New Jersey, that is!)" and "Whirly Bird", one of the finest muted trumpet solos ever put to wax on the soulful, "Duet" featuring Thad Jones and Joe Newman and an absolutely all-time classic "Li'l Darlin'" where Wendell Cully (again muted trumpet) just breaks your heart. And everyone's already mentioned how Jaws contributed.
My only disappointment is with all the two-fers being released by Nelson Riddle, Billy May and on and on, they didn't include the almost-as-good "Basie Plays Hefti" recorded around the same time. Just glad I kept mine.
Simply put, this is my favorite Basie Album though I wish they'd release the nicely after-hours "String Along With Basie" and "Not Now, I'll Tell You When" just for the flag wavingly superb "Ol' Man River."
Blinding.......2007-05-19
This is one of the finest big band jazz albums you can buy. I grew up listening to this as my Dad played it very loud at parties.
The Kid from Red Bank is an explosive start with Basie striding and the band screams in support. So much for Basie the minimalist!
There are a lot of great tunes on this album, and when they are played by a big band as good as this it makes it something very special.
Whirlybird is another screamer - fabulous Sax playing by I think Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis.
Absolutely essential for any Jazz collection and one of the most exciting albums ever recorded.
A Real Blast AKA as E=MC2.......2007-03-17
Recorded in 1957 this very high energy, exciting, sensual definitely sultry album whose cover sports an atomic blast, remember this was the late 50's, remains an accurate representation of the music within that remains a top seller in Basie's cannon and undoubtedly worthy of the praise all heap on it as a swinging, arousing, electrifying masterpiece of the genre.
It is all here Basie's piano coyness, licks and all, gorgeously arranged blaring Trumpets, Trombones,Reeds players galore, with Guitar,Bass & Drums all jive together in this non stop cataclysm boasting Basie's regular greats and additions of Eddie Lockjaw Davis whose distinctive playing stands out.
The issue is not categorizing Basie as others do, like Duke he was beyond category, blues.Kansa City, forays into all styles with the greats of the day and now this period ushering his stay with Roulette and Neil Hefti, the arranger and composer of these pieces.
Even the mix and fidelity of the album is crystal remastered from the original mono tapes.
Whether it was Basie's Decca period, later Columbia,Verve or this late 50's "Modern Jazz" that brought forward his collaborations with the likes of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra and Las Vegas makes no difference since all are worthy showcasing Basie and the spread he gave his band to stretch out in styles unique to this crucial man.
This complete CD also boasts alternatives and a vocal track with the great Joe Williams, his main singer of the day.
Somewhat of a disappointment.......2007-02-17
I really like Basie but many of the tunes here are on the dull side. It's a good version of Lil Darling and Whirybird. There are better Basie CDs out there
A...blast (pardon).......2006-02-13
Count Basie's problem is he started off great then declined; from his immortal Decca and lesser-but-still-great Columbia days his band degenerated into something loud, slick, and forgettable -- a Vegas band with a heritage. Neal Hefti stopped that decline, for a little bit; if the band's still loud and slick it plays with renewed purpose, energized by his first-class charts. (The only minus is Hefti's insistence on ending nearly every song with a flatted-fifth, an annoying shtick of those days.) And we see in spots why the Count was still such a marvelous piano player, even this late in his career: his one-finger stride, his James P. Johnson and Fats without the ornamentation, is among the most effective ways any jazzman ever communicated. If the public knows this album only through "Fantail" (the song the infamous Chuck Barris had Jim Lange inanely blabber over on "The Dating Game") it should know more of it -- and the other regal entertainments of the Count.

Swing baby!!.......2007-06-19
This is just a great high energy band.If you like any kind of swing/jazz music you have to like this!
Wild!.......2005-07-06
One of the wildest neo-swing bands ever heard. Really powerful swing. Songs like The Man with the Hex, Swing Sweet Pussycat, Caviar and Chitlins are the highlights on this album. Lover Lies is a wonderful ballad (that Tom Waits could sing). Very enjoyable and danceable album.
Pretty average neo-swing band.......2005-05-13
What many of the reviewers say here is true: the unique appeal of the band probably does lie in vocalist John Bunkley's voice. Unlike most of the other neo-swingers out there that try and cop a crooner vibe, Bunkley's sound is slightly reminiscent of Louis Armstrong's sandpaper over silk voice (without the silk..Bunkley isn't so hot on the sole slow tune. He's more like Armstrong would have been if he only did jump blues "shouter" numbers).
The band itself is competent but not stellar...there are no moments musically that make me go "Wow!". The horn arrangements are about what you'd expect.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"Caviar and Chitlins" is a fun novelty tune as is "Swing Sweet Pussycat". Despite Bunkley's voice being a bit gruff to pair well with the tune, I thought cheater ballad "Lover Lies" was decent. ("She thought she knew me/It should come as no surprise/She discovered how her lover lies") "Spanish Fly", an ode to the mythical aphrodisiac, is deliriously non-PC, as is adult beverage celebration "Drink Drank Drunk".
LOWS:
"Hit by a Brick" never really catches fire and since it's one of the longer songs here, it just drags. "Starve a Fever" is a fairly blah attempt at a mid-tempo bluesy number.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you, like me, caught on to neo-swing just as the "craze" hit, delved back into older swing, and then continued to listen to it once the fad was over, you may want to add this to the library for the 5 good cuts. Taken as an album, the overuse of repetition, lack of variety (nearly all uptempo), and Bunkley's inability to craft more than one vocal style (you can have whatever you want...as long as it's "scratchy blues shouter") keeps it out of the "essential" category.
If your interest in neo-swing only went as far as Brian Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies, you'll want to pass this one by.
Great music for driving.......2005-05-10
I first heard "Man with the Hex" on a "What's New, Scooby Doo?" episode. Despite my juvenile television preferences, I can definitely recommend this CD to grown-ups. The music is great for road trips, or just after a generally bad day at work.
Too cool for words...But I'll try...........2004-12-11
First off, this is not swing music. When I first heard the music I was expecting something overly slick like all the other Vegas-esque acts out there. Not so! This is butt kicking rock/jump blues. It has more punk influence than swing, and damn is that a good thing. Don't get me wrong I love the old swing stuff. However, in the spirit of Louis Jordan these guys take it up a notch. John Bunkley may very well be one of the most daring vocalists to date. He shouts like an old blues shouter, but phrases with more of an edge; way up on top of the beat and with a lot of heat. Frankly, without him, the band would sound a bit lame. With him, they are quite the treat for cliche' worn ears.

"Sleeping For Years" it is time to shake the foundation.......2007-06-24
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Vincent Cranes greatest contribution to the 2nd Rooster is that there even was a follow-up to the amazing self-titled debut. With Carl Palmer going to Emerson, Lake, & Palmer and Nick Graham heading toward the improvisational outfit "Skin Alley" it seemed a musical death walked behind. Cranes genius should increase a few more points for the replacements. Paul Hammond (First recording session was with Rooster) may not be Palmer but his drumming is tremendous in a demanding album both mentally and physically. John Du Cann from Andromeda (Psychedelic) came aboard as well. Cann walked through the door as a guitar player and singer. Another musician didn't replace Graham's bass. Vincent Crane used the Ray Manzarek (The Doors) idea to cover the bass from the keyboards.
"Death Walks Behind You" The Title track (Fitting as the opener) with the power, conviction, and total gloom is a monsoon. Seeking and destroying everything in its path. A shock to the mind and senses. It is one of the finest tunes from the era and the record was first getting started!
"Vug" already showed the musical diversity. More to the progressive rock sound with all instrumentation, it doesn't need lyrics to engross you every second.
"Tomorrow Night" became the most remembered tune on the album. Catchy, clever, but not common in its construction. There are the Rooster intangibles throughout.
"Seven Streets" brings us back to the darkness. The band keeps us in search for the light. The energy and aggression is an example of why many metal fans of early Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult proudly display this masterpiece in their collections.
"Sleeping For Years" continues the onslaught. The speakers grab you by the throat. The reason Rooster gained such respect (Especially in Europe) they didn't rely on the cliché riffs and simple power chords. There were more complex structures to their compositions.
"I Can't Take It No More" (A John Du Cann penned tune) brings down the altitude only a bit. The words and the music blend as one. Crane stays more in the background, allows the guitar, and drums to be the focal points.
"Nobody Else" Turnabout is fair play. The piano of Crane dominates the spotlight or so we are lead to believe. The first half of the song is Crane solo but then the troops are brought in and it is a full throttle takeover. The pain is evident and we feel it "My whole world has gone away." The most overlooked of the eight original tracks. Give this a couple of listenings to fully appreciate the pain.
"Gershatzer" can be summed up in five words THEY GET RIGHT TO IT. Another instrumental (With a drum-solo to boot) of explosive passion.
Can a five star recording get better? If you get the bonus tracks it does! "The Devil's Answer demo has Carl Palmer and the BBC material will further the destruction (In a good way).
One of the best recordings of its time. The fidelity is fine!
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"
Classic Gem.......2007-02-12
I had the good fortune to see this band at a festival in the early 70's
The material on this album is as interesting as it was then--My personal favorite is "Tomorrow Night"--Old Hippee music is still enjoyable in this age of digital tunes, and these guys used quite a few gizmos that were available in their day--talk about Jammin' on the Hammond!!!
An unheralded classic.......2005-12-18
There was so much good much in the sixties and early seventies that it's not surprising some wonderful albums and even groups are now largely forgotten. Atomic Rooster is one such group and "Death Walks Behind You" was their best studio album. It was influential in the rise of heavy metal, was one of the best albums for taking advantage of separate stereo channels (listen for the guitars to cross over each other from one end of the room to the other), and is laden with great songs. Highly recommended
GREAT PROG ROCK.......2005-12-14
I agree with Joe completely, especially concerning the alledged 'hiss'. I actually listened to that portion of "Nobody Else" several times even with my eyes closed and heard nothing but the music itself. The sound of the entire disc is fantastic. With the bonus tracks, the length is just over 75 min.
Classic Progressive Rock at its Finest.......2005-11-08
Don't be fooled. The so-called "tape noise" mentioned below is so insignificant in the scope of the album that it's hardly even noticable at all. You can't hear it unless you feel the urge to press your ear against your speaker and count the seconds until it begins. In fact, this noise is so quiet and so subtle, who's to say what it really is. Whatever you do, don't let one person's opinion (which is highly blown out of proportion) affect your decision about buying one of progressive rock's greatest masterpieces. The album has never sounded better than this remaster, and the bonus tracks are the icing on the cake.

It's about time. With eight albums to his credit and a reputation that stretches across the globe, someone had to pay tribute to Ice-T. But no one did, so he did it himself. From classics like "6 'N the Mornin" and "I'm Your Pusher" to the more commercial "New Jack Hustler" and "Colors," this compilation is the ultimate cross-section of Ice's hits and favorites. Sure, it may be 13 years worth of material on pimping, playing, and the drug game, but The Evidence demonstrates the strength of a hip-hop artist who's still doing it his way, even into his 40s. Production by Ice himself, Afrika Islam, and DJ Aladdin, among others, underscores the artist's often cinematic approach to hip-hop, with everything from break beats to live bass, ticking snares and guitar licks. If Ice-T is accused of being one of hip-hop's greatest then The Evidence makes him guilty as charged. --Kenji Jasper
Customer Reviews:
Ice is Nice.......2007-07-06
Good collection of Ice-Ts raps. Ice-T is kinda different from most rappers in that he doesn't rely on the beat and the flow so much. There's not so much instrumentation in his stuff, just a drum usually. Ice T relies on storytelling. His delivery is rough, but that works for his stuff. He conveys the no-nonsense business attitude [and sometimes teh menace] of the streets. Contrary to so many critics of rap, Ice doesn't do a lot of glamorizing. He's just gritty realism. Here's some good raps:
6 in the Morning
I'm YOur Pusher
High Rollers
Original Gangster
Colors - tune from the movie
I Ain't New to This
The Tower - song about going to prison and the scary life inside. Great line: "who's got the power, the whites, the blacks, or just the gun tower." Makes a listener really want to NOT go to prison.
Money, Power, Women - starts with Al Pacino's quote from Scarface. Cool.
Looking at my list, it's pretty long. I think I have to say this album is a strong 4 stars, almost 5. If I were more of a serious rap fan, maybe I'd feel it was a 5. Whatever, this a solid CD with serious rap, good storytelling.
You Played Yourself
Old school gangsta rapper with something to say.......2007-06-18
Here it is, The Evidence from one of the first and best. This CD is so awesome, I love it because it makes you think about things long after the music has stopped.
The first half of this album is remarkable, so many great beats with smart lyrics. I can't really pick a favorite, but I really love the message of track 2, I'm Your Pusher. He tells the self-destructive drug users "You don't know what time it is". Instead of pushin' the rock he's pushin the music. It might sound foolish or silly to some, but I like that positive message about keeping a strong mind.
Then there's track 4, You Played Yourself. It's genius, basically saying stay real to yourself. He preaches "stupid, ignorant--don't even talk to me. In school you dropped math, science, and history. Then you get on the mike and try to act smart. Let me tell you one thing, you got heart". Brilliant. Or he mentions "you thought you could do dope and still stay cool? Fool...you played yourself.
Then on track 6, Original Gangster, he paints a vivid picture of the chaos that surrounds South Central L.A. If you listen to the lyrics, you'll get caught up in the sad violent whirlwind that is constantly spinning. He exclaims "I'd be a true sucker if I act like I didn't care".
And of course there's New Jack Hustler. Nuff said.
There are so many other masterful tracks, like 6 'N The Mornin', High Rollers, Colors, Power, The Tower...man, I better stop.
This album is simply a must own. Once again, nuff said.
All Of The OG's Best In One Place.......2005-07-01
Ice-T is known as the first true "gangster rap" artist. He earned this title not by using excessive violent and vulgar language, but because he told true stories about the life of people in the streets. Tales of husters, pimps, gangsters and prisoners are all told, as well as a few true stories from Ice-T's own life. Every song on this compilation is a classic. Well I guess that's it.......2004-02-13
With Ice-T making bad movies and silly TV shows, his singing days are over. He probably did this to get out of his contract and be fully available to star in the 'Facts of Life' Reunion tour. I hear he's going to play Mrs. Garret's long lost pimp.
THE ICEMAN COMETH........2003-11-05
This is a well put together compilation from probably the best rapper out today. It contains many of his classic hits and is very well put together.I wish there were more rappers of the same calibre of ice t today. He is a very real person unlike many rappers of today who are simply about image and the pursuit of money.GET THIS CD TODAY.

Disney management has often been accused of sacrificing the long-term quality of its animated features for the short-term pay-off of direct-to-video sequels to its middling modern successes. But as this soundtrack-sequel to the studio's 1998 quasi-feminist Chinese folk-tale proves, the music of such ventures can often compare favorably with that of the original. This new collection's buoyant "(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls" is offered up in two versions: A more traditional stage musical take and an antic cover by Atomic Kitten that's pure teeny-bopping Disney Channel fodder. That's Harvey Fierstein lending his gravelly pipes to the equally spry redux of "A Girl Worth Fighting For," while the decidedly more angelic pipes of Kiwi teen soprano phenom Hayley Westenra grace the elegant "Here Beside Me" by Joel McNeely and Kate Light. Selections from McNeely's deft, emotionally understated orchestral score flesh out the collection. --Jerry McCulley

Alright...........2005-11-30
The music in this sequal is nothing compared to the first movie, but the tunes are catchy, and for a child that just enjoyed the movie, I could see how this would be a CD they'd want to hear over and over. It could get a bit annoying to their parents however. I would suggest seeing the movie before purchasing this soundtrack, for the songs are out of order from the movie, and it's always better to have a visual of what's going on before listening to the music alone.
I wasn't impressed, but I did enjoy it.
Terrible movie, but good soundtrack!.......2005-11-03
As a Chinese, I think this movie was terrible, because it made the tale of Mulan very confuse and strange. I don't want to see this movie again. But I bought this soundtrack, because the music was very good. Being fond of Lea Salonga's voice was one of the reasons.
The first song in this movie was "Lesson Number One", and it was my favourite. I love the choirs of children, it was perfect! It made me recognize the children's choirs in the church. Lea Salonga's voice was so sweet, and it's my favourite style! "A girl worth fighting for" came up in this soundtrak but it was remixed, and most of the lyrics were changed. Although it was very different from the original one, I love it. Because it gave me a good feeling, and I felt that it was more humorous than the original one. Another song named "Like other girls" is one of my favourites. Mei's voice was a little strange but very cute. The three princesses seemed to be crazy, but I could feel their emotion that they were eager of freedom and very unsetisfied with the arranged marrige. I felt very happy that they found their love and happiness by the end.
This was a movie which was so terrible but with perfect songs I have ever seen!
good cd.......2005-07-14
i saw the mulan II and loved the music in it, so i went out and bought the cd. here are my comments on each song-
1. lesson number one- 5/5. cute song
2. main title (score)- 5/5. i thought this was so pretty!
3. like other girls- 5/5. i absolutely love this song! it has a great beat, and just makes you want to sing along.
4. girl worth fighting for (redux)- 5/5. i love this song too, its funny
5. here beside me- 5/5. the first time i listened to it, i thought it was "ok", but now i think its great!
6. (i wanna be) like other girls (atomic kitten)- 5/5. i thought it was a great version of the original.
the next five songs, which are scores, are also very good!
overall, this cd was well worth my money, and the movie was even better!
Eh.......2005-07-04
The 'other girls' song is cute, but this reminds me of the follows up to pocahontas and cinderella and the little mermaid. Aladin's did well enough to make more, but...I think it really does have to do with the music. Mulan had that strong "reflection" by christina aguilera when she was first coming out, that established her as THE best voice, and that song, in spanish or english works well on it's own also. These sequals keep failing to have a strong song. The strengths here lie with the new score, new themes. It's easier to create a better classical piece for Disney it seems. And they have so many talented singers at their disposal...
One of my favourite soundtracks!.......2005-06-23
How wonderful! It's my favourite soundtrack. And the song named "Lesson Number One" is my favourite! Mulan's voice is great, and the children's voices are lovely too! I'll buy this album immediately!!!!!!!!!!!

Maintaining a unique sensibility for pop hooks and lyrical charms, Ned's Atomic Dustbin create British pop sounds that are instantly recognizable in their headshaking catchiness. Forged with standard rock instruments, the Ned's sound is even more salient because of the dual bass guitar lineup which provides jolting cross-melodies like no other. A constant barrage of dirty guitar scratches across the surface with flange and wah-wah providing spongy effects. In between the rapid movements, themes of post-adolescent angst come off brilliantly with the shrewdly idiosyncratic lyrics of singer John Penny. With a little help from the "Madchester" scene, they enlivened the steps of listeners further beyond the realm of the typical shoegazers of the time. --Lucas Hilbert
Customer Reviews:
Best.. Album. Ever........2007-01-16
Very few albums are listenable start-to-finish, but this one is fun throughout.
Stands the test of time.......2006-12-11
This is just one of those great debuts. Jesus Jones? Go home. EMF? Sit down. This is what you meant to do but couldn't, even if you did score the bigger hits.
While I hadn't joined a previous reviewer in making the Sugar/Neds connection, probably because Bob Mould tends to be a bit more somber when planning his guitar assaults: it does make sense, and it's all to the Neds' credit.
The dual-bass thing works terrifically, the drumming is maniacal, and one melody-drenched song after another simply sounds as though these guys were having the time of their lives.
BTW, _Blame Everyone_ by Grand Theft Audio is not far removed in its general approach, if anyone out there is hankering for a new-millennium shot of Nedsy goodness.
A Great Discovery.......2006-01-08
Even the "B side" material on this CD is mostly top-notch early 90s alt rock. This album is just bursting all over with manic psychedelic energy--in some ways quite similar to Bob Mould's early 90s band, Sugar, yet with its own unique flavor. Ned's is not as famous as some of the other punk-influenced bands of the era, but this CD is worth listening to many times over.
The first of Ned's distinctive three albums.......2005-11-07
Sounding almost like a more melodic version of speed metal, with a distinctive, early 90's, British pop sound, Ned's Atomic Dustbin made music which was quite unique and consistent in its superior quality. However, I think the reason that they only lasted for three albums, is that the sound never really changed, and became quite repetitive.
Being their first album, "God Fodder" (a cool name, isn't it?) is, to me, easily the band's most innovative album (although one can't really say it was influential, in that no other subsequent band really sounded like Ned's). My favorite two Ned's songs are here: namely "Selfish," and one of their most recognizable songs, "Grey Cell Green." I've always felt that these two songs should really be listened together, and act as counterpoints to each other: the subtle sound of "Selfish" leads perfectly into the kinetic "Grey," both with quirky lyrics. When the latter was played at a Ned's concert I attended at a small N.Y.C. venue, the audience literally went crazy.
Other highlights on the album are "Happy," and the lead-off song: "Kill Your Television." Listen to the aforementioned four songs and you basically get the idea of the one-of-a-kind two bass driving sound that is heard in basically every other song on all three albums. The nine remaining songs on this particular album are consistently decent, making "God Fodder," a solid four star effort.
Pure pop rock.......2005-11-06
I bought this the same day I bought Nevermind by Nirvana, and to this day this album ranks higher on my list of favorites. Maybe it's because I was just a kid when I first heard this, but it sounds so vibrant and original.
Yeah, the band utilized two bassists to form their sound, which sounds gimmicky until you hear it. Basically, they had a guitarist and bassist playing the rhythm/backing parts and one bassist playing the crisp/trebly lead, which gave their sound this bright and aggressive feel. And John Penney's voice is perfect for the music; it's a little angry, a little strange, and a little hopeful.
This band won't be remembered as an "important" band (like Nirvana, Pearl Jam or other bands coming up at the time), but I don't think they would particularly care to be. This is music made for the moment, and sounds pretty pure because of that.

Album Description
Russell Allen's Atomic Soul marks the first solo CD release from the lead singer of Symphony X, a man that many consider to be one of the finest vocalists in all of hard rock. In true "solo CD" fashion, Atomic Soul is a complete departure from Symphony X's bombastic progressive-power metal style. Instead, Russell Allen strips away all of the excess and offers up just the bare bones. Russell Allen's Atomic Soul is a gutsy, gritty, whiskey-soaked return to the blues-based soul of hard rock. On this release Russell pays homage to the sound that inspired him in his youth. Reminiscent of bands like Free, Bad Company, Mountain, and Deep Purple, Atomic Soul showcases Russell's incredible vocal force in its purest form. Russell Allen's Atomic Soul also features a guest appearance from Russell's Symphony X bandmate, Michael Romeo. This release will have a direct to appeal the quickly growing Symphony X fanbase.
Customer Reviews:
Scary.......2006-10-16
This is a premier rock vocalist? Are you kidding me? One note, no talent screeching in a very limited register. There are at least 10 rock vocalists in your own town right now that could put this guy to shame. Besides that, his voice is incredibly irritating. Comparing this effort to rock legends is nothing short of blasphemy. Could come is handy in interrogating Al Queda terrorists but would be declared in violation of the Geneva Convention. And rightfully so. Just awful!
a must listen .......2006-02-17
everyone should try this soulful, fun solo album from russell allen, lead singer of symphony x. its bluzie, its rock, its melodic and to simply put, its great music for the ears.
I was disapointed.......2005-10-24
Usually I give a whole CD a true chance, especially if it from a caliber like Russel Allen. Especially since Symphony X is one of my favorite bands to listen to. I listened to 5 songs and took the CD out and won't listen to it anymore. Russel has a unique and well trained voice but he did not show his true potential. He sounded more ordinary than interesting. I didn't feel it at all.
Hope the next one will be better.
Alex
Catchy, Rocking, and Great.......2005-07-29
It's been far too long since an album has caused my ears to perk up the way this one has. The riffs are catchy and the bluesy vocals reveal whole new dimensions to Russell Allen's talent that you probably won't get in Symphony X (with the exception of impromptu interludes at their live shows). Tracks like "Unjustified", "Voodoo Hand", and "We Will Fly" have been stuck in my head for days. This album reminds me of good Led Zeppelin songs, Pink Cream 69, George Thorogood and Black Label Society all in one. I recommend giving it a thorough listening.
Was it worth waiting?.......2005-06-29
I'm a fan of Allen's voice, but I would have really liked to hear less variety of styles. "We will fly" and "Gaia" are my favorite songs. Everything else is kinda "I'm here but I didn't arrive yet". Maybe his next effort will be more directed. Three stars is all I could give.
