Jade Lady
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
A mainstay of Vermonts lively music scene for over thirty years, Cassel is also no stranger to the critics. Of his vibrantly eclectic performances the Montreal Star wrote: "Cassel offers a highly original and imaginative approach to piano and vocal improvisation. He has a wit and a vitality that could make big name performers forget their last 100 encores." Downbeat Magazine refers to Cassel as "a real find as a pianist," while the Boston Globe lauds him as "a versatile, laid-back exponent of the jazz piano." Versatility is one of Cassels greatest strengths, and in a typical evening he moves effortlessly and expertly through a repertoire ranging from Jerry Lee Lewis to Cole Porter to Duke Ellington to Fats Waller to Frederic Chopin. And, of course, theres everything in between, including a wide selection of his own songs.
John has appeared with many internationally known performers, including Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Maynard Ferguson, and Dave Brubeck. Mostly, though, John plays where he has always been the most comfortable - in small clubs. You can catch his always-surprising show at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, Friday through Tuesday nights.

south american baroque.......2007-01-05
Until recently I had never heard of the South American music greats; people writing at the same time as Mozart, Beethoven and the European Masters, but their music is every bit as great as the Europeans. Stunning arrangements, original approaches, vast choirs and orchestras, the music of baroque South America is infused with a reverence and devotion to Catholic liturgy equal to or greater than that of Europe. One of the surprising, delightfully so, aspects is the influence of indigenous music from the Andes, the jungles, and the pampas upon these composers. Sublime!

"CASSEL MADE OF MORE THAN SAND".......2005-01-28
[...]
If you've been in and around Stowe for any time, there's no doubt you've run into John Cassel. The jazz pianist is a mainstay at Trapp Family Lodge from Friday nights through Tuesdays for as long as anyone can remember. And while it's entirely plausible that you've heard him smoothly glide his way down 88 keys in fingering through a Duke Ellington medley or dropping jaws with a fiery rendition of Scott Joplin's The Entertainer, there's another side to Cassel that you may not be aware of.
Cassel, a resident of East Fairfield, is on the verge of releasing two completely different - polar opposites really - albums in the new year. The first is a compilation of those songs you've heard before: Dinner Music at The Trapp Family Lodge, while the second is an 11-track record of original music entitled Jade Lady.
First and foremost, understand that Cassel is an extremely versatile and competent pianist, which allows him to effortlessly present lush and beautiful versions of those classics he plays as dinner music. But on Jade Lady, listeners will realize that John Cassel is a strong musical composer, who with a little help from some of Vermont's most talented and sought-out studio musicians, has recorded a fantastic album of original jazz songs.
Heck, Cassel's a talented singer as well.
What's not to love about soothing instrumental standards such as Moonlight in Vermont, Memories or an extravagant medley of songs from Phantom of the Opera, including Think of Me, Angel of Music, Music of the Night, All I Ask of You and The Phantom of the Opera. Cassel is so adept at the piano that it's fair to say he can handle any request tossed his way. It's exactly why he's such a favorite among visitors to Trapp Family Lodge.
But another aspect of his Dinner Music at The Trapp Family Lodge release is the monumental production work on the recording end of songs. The album is flawless and Cassel presents his favorites with a strong movement and ear to great sound.
For over 30 years Cassel has been an integral part of the Vermont music scene and while he's shared the stage with such talent as Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Maynard Ferguson and Dave Brubeck, it's his original songs that are a testament to his true musicianship.
Jade Lady teeters on brilliant. It's a powerful concoction of lounge jazz, rollicking piano-based jazz rock and even showtune-esque classic standards. Cassel proves his mettle with a voice that carries a tune and lyrics that speak volumes of his wit and wisdom.
On the opening track, Melon Moon, where Cassel sings, "In a while you'll come round like you should/maybe I'll come down to earth for good," the music moves along like any classic jazz standard.
But don't think for one minute that Cassel is a one trick pony: take a listen to Dear Lisa, which incorporates elements of 1970s horn-infused soul and cavorting guitar riffage that is reminiscent of classic rock. It's not conflicting with the rolling piano base either, as Cassel has obviously tempered the sound to be just right.
Jade Lady, while jazzy in nature, has such a unique identity that Cassel is a fine example of musical neurons firing randomly and hitting target effortlessly. A local musical treasure, both Cassel records are highly recommended.
