"And I ra-a-an, I ran so far awa-a-ay...." OK, now that you've got that stuck in your head for the rest of the day, you may as well go ahead and get the rest of the hits and misses from the most badly coifed outfit in synth-pop history. Frontman Mike Score, a former hairdresser, is responsible for this Liverpool band's worst and best aspects, the latter being a talent for almost painfully catchy pop melodies and synth hooks that bounce along nicely over gradually descending bass lines. In addition to the aforementioned "I Ran," this best-of sports two versions of the equally sublime "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" and a selection of tracks from AFOS's six-year career, including "It's Not Me Talking." --Bill Forman

I ran to buy this..........2007-07-09

Well, I did not enjoy the cd as much as I could have, had I known that their song "I ran" was one of a kind and did not represent the other songs on the cd. However, it was kinda worth it just to get that song. Then again....

3 stars just because I love "I ran".

Great, But 1993 Import Version Is Better.......2007-01-30

As a CD reissue of their 1986 greatest hits album on the Jive label, The Best Of A Flock Of Seagulls is a great collection of songs from the band, two or three of which are more familiar to U.S. listeners, but nonetheless great. Here is where I first heard the version of "I Ran" with the synthesizer "seagulls intro" instead of the sudden cymbal crash start. The CD adds an extended version of "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)" as well as a mislabeled remix of "The More You Live, The More You Love", both of which are great to listen to. However, since I later bought the 1993 import version done under a different label which features more songs plus some great B-sides, this gets one star less than it should. Differences in songs notwithstanding, if you like the Seagulls and you've got to have a "greatest hits" album of them, I'd recommend this one for starters.

Why this collection is crucial for Flock collectors.......2006-09-15

For starters, it has the 9 minute 12" version of "Wishing." But it ALSO has the 7" remix of "The More You Live The More You Love," which I've always felt is far superior to the LP version, because it's much more new wave sounding. ALSO, note that the track listing has always been wrong on this disc, including on the CD insert itself. The final track on here is NOT The Story of A Young Heart--it is the FULL MOON REMIX of "The More You Live The More You Love," which was the B-side to the original 12". "The Story of A Young Heart" can be found on the Platinum and Gold Collection.

Image Isn't Everything, but Apparently It's Pretty Damn Close.......2006-04-25

If ol' Mike Score could have only ditched the seagull haircut, this band might have fully connected with the public in a way that their music certainly did. Only, they wouldn't have been the Flock then, would they?

Check out "I Ran" but also "Nightmares", "Wishing", and "Space Age Love Song"...just so ahead of their time. In my book, the Flock is a prime example of what can happen when you mix genius artistry with a silly public image.... It's really so sad, these guys had one of the best sounds - period - from out of the New Wave era.

A great best of the Flock / unique music of the 80's.......2006-03-12

The Flock of Seagulls were a groundbreaking band in their time. The music is vibrant and very sophisticated. If your name is Earl and you drive a beatup pickup, you probably won't get it. The better known tracks like "I ran", "Space Age Love Song", "Wishing(If I had a Photgraph of You)" are included, but the last track "The Story of a Young Heart" that make this disk so good. This track is an excecise in ambiance and rythm that is all but lost in todays modern music. In sumary the Flock of Seagulls made some great music, however you either get it or you don't.

A Very Thorough Yet Still Lacking Retrospective.......2000-12-01

Of all their 'Greatest Hits' compilations available, this no doubt is the best of them all. Included are their big hits- I RAN, SPACE AGE LOVE SONG, TELECOMMUNICATIONS, etc. But also some of their later songs (IT'S NOT ME TALKING, THE MORE YOU LIVE THE MORE YOU LOVE, WHO'S THAT GIRL [SHE'S GOT IT], WISHING...) are all worthy of honourable mention. The only titles that, in my opinion, could have easily been replaced are the likes of NIGHTMARES, COMMITTED, LIVING IN HEAVEN, and WINDOWS. Other catchy tracks from perhaps their debut album (MESSAGES, YOU CAN RUN, DON'T ASK ME, + STANDING IN THE DOORWAY) could better have been their substitutes. Even better yet, had they all together been combined, no future 'Best Of' could have come near it's match. As it remains, however, the final star of this hits collection and review is better shining somewhere off into eternity...

Best collection by AFOS.......2000-10-04

This is the most comprehensive of the Flock of Seagulls collections, and it demonstrates just how good these guys were. Riding the crest of the synthpop/new wave explosion in America in 1982, they mastered not only the art of guitar and synth fusion but of writing simple yet infectious melodies. Beyond the radio hits "I Ran" and "Space Age Love Song", you have to witness truly touching songs like "Wishing", "The More You Live, The More You Love" and "Transfer Affection", and experience the haunting "Nightmares" or paranoid "It's Not Me Talking". They quickly became laughable icons of the New Wave movement, thanks in part to Mike Score's absurd haircut, but they really were so much better than what any superficial retro 80's kitsch might have you believe, and it's a crime that their excellent first two albums have not been properly reissued on CD (ignoring the long out-of-print versions).

synth+guitar=AFOS.......2000-03-20

A new wave group with a lot of rock influence: songs like "Never Again", "Space age L.S.", "The more you live", "Wishing" makes them the Roxy Music of the 80's (as far as there was P.Reynolds on guitar). Plus "Telecommunication" is way post punk, and "It's not me talking" would make happy any Cure's fan; if you like synths,drum machines as well as guitars and you're looking for romantic melodies & lyrics DON'T MISS THIS CD

Most of the best of AFOS, plus some questionable choices.......2000-01-06

I was in high school when AFOS's first album was released, and being a synth junkie I fell in love with the quirky band immediately. AFOS was a highly influential band, albeit a short-lived one, and this disc has many of their best. This import version also contains "Windows", an excellent little tune that was only released in the US as the B side of "Space Age Love Song" and is thus very hard to find. I particularly like "Nightmares", "Transfer Affection", the instrumental "DNA", and "It's Not Me Talking". Unfortunately, there are also some of AFOS's later songs on here, when they were trying to sound more like New Order than New Order did. Example: "Who's That Girl".

Wishing they were still rockin........1999-09-25

This is a band that captivated me in the early 80's and I still listen to them on a regular basis. This greatest hits CD has the songs us A.F.O.S. fans all love and has three that I never heard before. Commited being the less favorite of the three, and Windows being the best of the three as Living in heaven is a good song also. If you're a true fan you'll like them all because it's a FLOCK OF SEAGULLS, right? A CD company could do us all a favore and release LISTEN on CD for us fans.

Cash-in........2005-07-25

First of all, AFOS are a great band, don't get me wrong, but this release shouldn't even exist. These are tracks recorded by Mike Score for the purpose of being remixed for an earlier AFOS remix album, Cleopatra/Phantom took it unto themselves to release the unmixed tracks against the band's permission. Most likely to cash in on an AFOS resurgence due to their music's appearance in GTA: Vice City (see the cover). So if you want to get a greatest hits collection, get any one but this one, don't help fund labels that don't respect artists. Better yet, just buy the actual albums, every track is great, the ones you "haven't heard on the radio" will suprise you.

I like the remixes a lot they are a litlle diferent tham the 80`s version is a little more contemporary also I already have it the best of flock of a seagulls the old versions and this ones are like the same but with great remixes five stars and it`s a good price

Like Bad Kareoke Versions of the Originals.......2004-07-14

Who knows what happened here on this album? You would think that after singing these songs for over twenty years the singer might improve upon the originals. No chance. These new renditions are uninspired and almost robotic in tone. Don't buy this unless you enjoy being disappointed.

Name of the album should be called "You-and your $$- Run".......2004-05-09

According to Mike 'the ego has landed' Score former lead singer of the band Flock of Seagulls, this album is yet another attempt by a record company to cash in on past hits.

Anyone who saw bands re-united will know that Score's voice is now shot and the other 3 members of the band, brother Ali Score on drums who hasn't spoken to Mike in 12 yrs, Frank on bass and Paul on guitar could re-form as a Flock of C-gulls or something like that and still actually perform.

Mike attempts on the bands official website to distance himself from this cd because the main bulk of music was recorded for a re-mix album 2 years ago and the record company took the music and his (poor) voiceovers and did a new compilation album with them.

Give this cd a wide berth and spend your money on another good compilation CD. To hear one member of the band re-record and re-sing songs 20 years later and then grumble about the quality does this band dis-justice. If amazon would have let me post O stars I would have.

Don't be fooled..........2004-03-18

What you're not being told here is that these are all re-recordings of a great collection of music that lose quite a bit in the update. If you're interested in the bonus remixes, they aren't all that hot.
So please do yourself a favor, if you're temped to get this, pay the extra couple of bucks for the original 1991 "The Best Of A Flock Of Seagulls" release. You'll get the great original recordings of some great music...
