Wide Awake in America [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The defining moment of 1985's Live Aid music festival was U2's pulsing, magical performance of "Bad," where Bono climbed down into the audience and danced with a young woman while millions watched, for almost 20 minutes. The album version of the song wasn't anywhere near that amazing, so the centerpiece of the four-song Wide Awake EP, released in a hurry after Live Aid, is another gorgeously drawn-out live take on "Bad." It's augmented by two rather nice outtakes from the Unforgettable Fire sessions (which had previously appeared as British B-sides), both more showcases for the band's collaborative electricity than good songs per se, and another solid live recording. --Douglas Wolk --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Best track in U2's entire output - right here..........2007-06-20
The live version of "Bad" is my pick for the best thing U2 has ever released. It's an utter revelation, far surpassing the studio version in immediacy and power. The other live track is a worthy version also, much different than the atmospherically-rendered studio version of "A Sort of Homecoming", though not necessarily better.
The two studio tracks are worthwhile for U2 fans, and are better than some of the songs that actually made it to The Unforgettable Fire album. "Three Sunrises" mixes 60-ish psychdelic pop with some more aggressive signature-U2 touches, while the final track "Love Comes Tumbling" is a little too mumbly-morose for my taste, but is a nicely crafted song nonetheless.
Amazing live versions of two damn good songs.......2007-03-25
Thsi is just a mini CD, but it contains the best Live version of "Bad" and "A sort of Homecoming" that you can find. The drum on "A sort of homecoming" is simply amazing. An incredible energy emerge from this song. "Bad" is also incredible. The two studio tracks are quite good also.
Wide Asleep in America.......2007-01-23
A waste of time and money for only four song and they no different then you could find on a studio album.
'85 Memento Awakens Us.......2006-10-08
'Wide Awake in America' is a fine postcard from America. The title hearkens a theme that "In God's Country" U2 would elaborate on for 'The Joshua Tree'. Their live versions of "Bad" and "A Sort of Homecoming" are nice mementos that don't really add to their legacy. The latter rendition is breezy and relaxing without the tension and build-up of the original 'Unforgettable Fire' opening anthem. It is heartwarming, even if it lacks passion. Similarly, their live version of "Bad" is more engaging than firey or urgent. The originals are essential, however. "Three Sunrises," which can now be found on the B-sides of their "limited" 1980-1990 collection, is exhiliarating. Sounding like a beautiful Native American hymn at the beginning, Edge's fine guitar interplay and the propulsiveness of the band meet the occasion with a passionate love song, sung for humanity. "Love Comes Tumbling" is also a gem. Closing the album, it is a complexly layered, but quietly beautiful love song.
No spoken words, just a scream.......2005-11-17
Wide Awake in America is an EP released after U2's career-defining appearance at 1985's Live Aid. It consists of live performances of "Bad" (NOT the version from Live Aid) and "A Sort of Homecoming," both from 1984's The Unforgettable Fire, as well as two outtakes from that album, "Love Comes Tumbling" and "The Three Sunrises."
"Bad" was recorded in November of 1984 in Birmingham, England (not in the U.S. as the EP's title suggests), well before Live Aid. This version of the song is absolutely amazing- it's infused with all the passion of the studio version as well as the energy from the audience. "A Sort of Homecoming" was recorded at London's Wembley Arena several days later as a soundcheck- the audience noise was edited in later. While knowing that somewhat dampens my enjoyment of the track, I still must say that it's performed with great energy and enthusiasm that were less present on the studio version.
The two studio tracks are quite good, and I agree with the other reviewers that say that they belong on The Unforgettable Fire in place of some of the questionable material from that album ("Elvis Presley & America" in particular). "Love Comes Tumbling" is a slower, brooding piece not unlike "Bad" or the title track from The Unforgettable Fire. "The Three Sunrises" is more joyous and uptempo, and has a sing-along feel to it. These are two of the best U2 B-sides.
Wide Awake in America is a fantastic EP and something that I'd recommend to anyone interested in U2. However, there's the matter of this being an EP that's sold at an LP's price. Myself, I downloaded the whole album from iTunes for $4. That's probably the best way to go with this.

BGO.... Better Get Organized...........2005-11-10
This release is a strange one. Where the other BGO 2 fers for Pat have been on single discs, this is a double set (at least mine was...) and Live From Earth suffers from botched track indexes. Case in point: When you put the disc in your player, it only lists 8 tracks. The liner notes show the 10 tracks on the album. What's happened is that tracks 3, 4, and 5 are all crammed together on one track. What gives here guys? Especially when I can still go out and buy the original version with no mixups and it sounds just about the same.
Wide Awake in Dreamland seems to be O.K. and doesn't suffer from any edit version inclusion nightmares and whatnot.
A definite headscratcher if ya ask me...
Time to beef up quality control there guys...
