While not quite all they could be (that would come with The It Girl), Sleeper pushed themselves straight into the front ranks of Britpop with Smart, mostly due to the infectious "Inbetweener," (a hit in England) and the sexually charged presence of singer Louise Wener. Even if the rest of the band was essentially faceless, Louise had enough charisma to carry them along and power the songs, the majority of which were actually pretty good, with "Pyrotechnician," "Swallow," and "Bedhead" standing out from the pack. A one-woman show? Time would tell. For now, though, Sleeper seemed like an early riser. Chris Nickson --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Album Description
For a band that's been compared to Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Wilco, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the National sure sounds a lot more like the Czars or Uncle Tupelo on this sophomore album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers. The band focuses on slow atmospheric songs, it's when it kicks out the jams that the music is the most compelling.. With so many influences rearing their heads and ample musical chops in the bag, the National might not be masters of any one genre, but it creates a fine amalgam nonetheless. Brassland. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
one of my Top 3.......2007-05-03
The first song is low...talks about personal weakness and how to hide your feelings from another. Mentions strangers ("you're just another one of them"), death and unknown men.
The second is completely different, in tone, in tempo. Full of energy & screams. Talks about being lonely ("she's lonely, man"), ghosts, haunted ("by an important life you could have led").. OK, same doleful content, but a lot more upbeat and forms a beautiful contrast to the first song.
I highly recommend this band because it's not typical Alt Country. No. Beautiful violins--it's more like a combination of continental classical mixed in with heartfelt American art-nouveau. Allez-y et achetez-le.
bought Sad Songs...after to listening to "alligator" 1,000 times........2006-11-12
If you have listened to "Sad songs..." once it may not click, but it'll whet your music curiousity. I have to say it, although cliche, it is The National's "The Wall". Pieced toghether song by song with a purpose. One of my best listening experiences ever was playing "sad songs..." and "Cherry Tree" at high volume in my living room with a nice glass of Sapphire and ice.
I laughed, I cried, and caught a good buzz...
You should buy this album if you like true musical talent and thoughtful, intellegent lyrics. This album reverberates on another level.
Buy this album, or Cherry Tree, or Alligator, love it, then go see them live.
absolutely amazing.......2005-11-27
Songs 2 through 9 are some of the best stuff The National has done. Slipping Husband lodges in your head and refuses to leave. I kind of wish it had been the first track on the record. Cardinal, Track 1, has 3 am feel that seems misplaced as the first song but who cares this CD has Husband, Murder Me Rachel, 90 mile water wall (best title ever) etc...
Masterminds.......2005-10-28
Excellent band. Saw them live somewhere in europe a couple years ago and wasn't impressed. Man have they evolved. Buy it, become a better person.
A great discovery.......2004-12-13
The title of this album is misleading. It could be called Funny Songs for Angry Lovers ....or Dirty Songs for Sad Lovers....lyrically, the songs explore different sides of relationships and there is a lot of levity..... song titles like Trophy Wife and Sugar Wife make me think the album title may be intended as a joke. Though who can say. Whatever the case, this is an interesting, intense album.
There are quiet acoustic and electronic ballads like the frst song Cardinal Song and one of the last, Patterns of Fairytales ....but also totally blistering, raging rock songs like Murder Me Rachael and Available. I am partial to the latter....but I think they wouldn't be as effective without the quiet, beautiful moments. As far as influences, there are some hints of americana in the Wilco sense in spots (like 90 Mile Water Wall) but also Joy Division in other songs like Available. I was turned onto the National by a friend who is also a fellow Nick Cave fanatic, but I can't really compare them to any specific Cave era or album. I am more reminded at times of Leonard Cohen and even Silver Jewsand Wilco.

After Exile in Guyville turned Liz Phair into an indie-rock pinup queen, rock critics and lo-fi aficionados everywhere awaited her follow-up with bated breath. Instead of making Guyville II, Phair sidestepped expectations by delivering Whip-smart, an album that replaced the shoestring intimacy of her debut with more traditional song arrangements and (gasp!) professional-sounding production. Though it lacks anything as memorable (and quotable) as Guyville's "Fuck and Run," the record has some notable high points, including the acerbic "Chopsticks," the lovely ballad "Nashville," and the perfect pop single "Supernova." In short, Whip-smart isn't the tremendous artistic statement Guyville was, but it's far more accessible--and quite enjoyable on its own terms. --Dan Epstein

stands the test of time.......2007-06-19
The song "Nashville" off this album still gives me goosebumps each time I hear it. Her voice overall sounds very cool on this album. "Whip Smart" is also a really fun track. I got this in late 1995 as a promo when I worked for a college paper and I still have it in my collection! It's probably the only CD that has survived that long, and I just downloaded it to my itunes -- no scratches, all these years later! thanks Liz! (cool album jacket too).
"And nobody sparkles like you...".......2006-03-26
I bought this album about three years ago and to this day whip-smart is still my favorite album. Liz Phair is a genius. Her song-writing is incredible, her voice a relentless pitbull, and her image, a true reniassance. All the songs I love, especially Nashville, Go West, and the album closer, May Queen.
A lot of people think she sold out with her later albums but hey a girl's gotta get paid. Exile in Guyville is considered her masterpiece, and i think it's a great album but for me, whip-smart is her masterpiece. Totally under-rated, this album has smart lyrics and great guitar playing. You can decide for yourself but Whip-smart is one cd that will never be used as a coaster.
Rockin' -- I dig it :).......2006-02-12
I find Liz's music to be good fun and entertaining. Since there are plenty of persons out there happy to be wordy about it, I'll keep this brief. Love it!
A More than Competent Follow-Up to an Indie Classic.......2005-09-27
Disciples of "Exile in Guyville" will agree with the four star rating, newcomers might say it's more of a 3.5 kinda party, but that's still not bad. In an interview, LP once cited a Pavement album as one of her faves. This is no wonder to me, since her first two albums mirrored the characteristics of her Matador contemporaries' first two albums as well. Both respective firsts were raw, instant classics with undeniable charm and unlimited potential. Both follow-ups realized that potential.
"Whip-Smart" shows that Liz's song writing abilities run deeper than which some may have given her credit. This album has it all: Austere melodies that dance on the fringe between polyphonic bliss and drab monotones (chopsticks most notably)but still stir up your insides. Pop-hooks that'll reel you in like a prized marlin (Supernova, Whip-Smart) and still manage to distinguish themselves from the garden variety which live on FM radio. And...all the smut you can handle. A LP tradition that's continued in rich fashion. You've gotta love her honesty if nothing else. This woman makes talking dirty sound smart.
Spanning a broad spectrum of musical landscapes, slick production (not too slick though), and anthemic vocal melodies, Whip-Smart leaves you wanting more, and wondering why Liz Phair never married Steve Malkmus (former Pavement frontman)
Liz is fair.......2005-09-04
An uneven album that features some very good songs among others that are rather mediocre. Standouts include "May Queen" and the hit single "Supernova."

Album Description
A children's album, influenced by James Taylor, Bob Dorough (Schoolhouse Rock) and Randy Newman, Great Big Sun is full of songs that are by turn humorous, educational and poignant yet never lose the wide-eyed naiveté of childhood.·
Great Big Sun is directly responsible for some of the fondest memories I will have of our twin daughters infancy. In fact, I'm so fond of [Great Big Sun] that I've played it for my own enjoyment when the girls were nowhere near. - Lou Diamond Phillips, Film Actor

Great CD!! Parents & kids can enjoy!!!.......2007-01-10
My son heard one of Justin's songs on a kids network. I searched for the CD and I'm so glad I tracked it down. ALL of the songs on this CD are catchy and singable - without driving parents crazy if they have to listen to it over and over.
Not just for kids.......2006-06-06
This quirky and smart CD is one that my kids love and is never tiresome to me. I often listen to this CD even when my kids are not around. It is just that good. His puts on a great live show.
We LOVE Justin Roberts.......2005-08-06
My daughter, age 2.5 sings every song on this CD. Little Raindrop being our favorite...along with Everything else starts with E. .... no wait we love the WHOLE thing!! You will too!
Great CD you and your family will enjoy.......2005-07-13
I have been working backwards through the JR catalog and this second title I own by this artist. Great Big Sun is catchy, humorous, intelligent, soulful (yes I said soulful describing a children's album) and positive. The title track (Great Big Sun) sets a high bar and the tone followed by refreshingly creative new spins on counting ('If you got 1'), the alphabet ('Everything else starts with e' and 'a,b,c,d,e'), and childhood ('Apple tree'). The themes are relevant to life, no matter what age. The only negatives compared to 'Way Out' are the run time is a little short at 31:56 and 'Do You Wanna Go' does not fit in with the other songs in speed or tempo. However, this is music you and your family will enjoy..."Aint gonna let no wolf run my life"...
first songs my kids clapped for.......2005-01-11
My boys get so excited when we play this CD. Fortunately, it is very easy for adults to listen to as well. There are a couple tracks on this CD - everytime we here them my 18 month old applauds.

Customer Reviews:
Trout Fishing in America has wide appeal.......2007-04-12
After hearing Trout Fishing in America at a concert in my home town, I decided to buy a CD for my husband and me and one for my 7-year-old granddaughter. When we got together, we played (her) "Big Trouble" and (our) "My Best Day". I don't know who enjoyed it more--the children, the parents, or the grandparents. My granddaughter was soon singing along with "When I Was a Dinosaur" and other favorites on the CD which is not surprising when you consider how many times she listened to it during the weekend. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood are wonderful musicians, clever song-writers, and just all-around great entertainers. Here's to many more years of their audience-pleasing CD's and personal appearances.
Big Trouble is great.......2006-08-09
My favorite is still Family Party, but that's probably because I've had it for years--I bought it even before my son was born. We enjoy Big Trouble, we just have to listen to it more often to really get to know the songs. We especially like the title song--that poor kid, in such big trouble because the monsters have wrecked his house!
Great, Upbeat Music for the whole Family!.......2006-07-02
I used to work at a toy store and believe me we had to play some really bad music, but when this cd was on, the time just flew by. Now I listen to this music with my son. It is really upbeat and is something I would recommend when you need to pass the time like when you're in the car or cleaning up. The songs are creative, not the same old sing alongs you get on all the other kids' music cds.
this is so funny!.......2006-03-10
I HAVE THREE CHILDREN WHEN I PUT THIS CD ON WE LAUGH AND IT'S EVEN FUN FOR ADULTS! I THREW HER OUT THE WINDOW! MY SON WHO WE GOT THIS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY LOVED HEARING THIS ON HIS SCHOOL BUS!HE TOLD ME THAT HE WANTED THIS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY.WELL THANK GOODNESS AMAZON HAD IT AND FOR CHEAP! I NEVER KNEW THAT ORDERING COULD BE SO FUN AND FAST!
The Reason I rarely buy stupid popular character kids music.......2006-01-07
Popular fad kids music willl never be able to compare to the perfection that is Trout fishing in America. Fresh, funny, lively addictive music the whole family will want to listen to together.
I was introduced to Trout fisning in America long before I had kids. My husband had 2 CDs fromhis college days.
Every single son on this tape is memerable. YOu will find yourself singing, or trying to sing along in the case of Proper Cup of Coffee!
There are way too many laugh out loud lyrics, the music is contagious and makes you want to move.
Lastly Lullaby is actually a sweet beautiful piece.
NOt only are they fun songs but these 2 men have great voices!

Album Description
Harmony Singing By Ear: A step by step approach for learning how to sing harmonies above and below a melody. Three CDs totaling three 1/2 hours of instructional narrative, fully produced music tracks and guide vocals. One, two or more singers can learn two and three-part harmony singing. Vocal coach Susan Anders has successfully used these methods for over twenty years with pop, R&B, folk, rock and country singers.
Harmony Singing By Ear uses two complementary methods to teach singers how to harmonize by ear. After reviewing some music theory basics, instructional sections walk you through how to find the upper and lower harmony parts for eight songs. Those same harmonies are sung on fully produced music tracks. On these tracks the vocal parts are panned to different speakers--singers can pan to one speaker and just hear their part, pan to the middle and hear both parts, or pan to the other speaker to practice with one or two other parts. In this way, beginning harmonizers can control how much or how little of the other voices they hear, making it easier to stay on their part. More confident harmonizers can sing without the guide vocals. Singers who simply want to learn and sing the harmony parts can skip the instructional tracks, go right to the music tracks, and pan their speakers to the right to learn the harmony part for each song.
Though much of Harmony Singing By Ear focuses on the how-tos of parallel harmonizing above and below a melody, singers will also learn about call-response, blue note, chromatic and block chord harmonies. Music tracks without vocals are also included so singers can practice their parts "without the training wheels". Plus, there's a supplementary section of exercises to build one's harmonizing skills. The songs range in style from pop to R&B to folk to modern rock to jazz.

Best i've heard.......2007-05-05
I've been singing and teaching harmony for a long time now, and I must say that these CD's are the best i've come across. They are not overloaded with theory and musical jargon, which makes it easy for the non-musicians for follow. Great choice of songs too.
A revolutionary product.......2006-01-10
I was clueless about harmony singing before using these CDs. Now I'm getting it-the lessons are very user-friendly and go at a good pace, and I'm learning things about music and singing that never made sense to me before. Good choice of songs, good method.

Great CPD.......2007-01-10
Great Cherry Poppin' Daddies. An eclectic mix -- as usual. With this kind of variety, you may not like every tune -- but, you're bound to find something new you like, if your a CPD fan.
if you really love music..............2005-12-17
the daddies are for you. i am lucky enough to own all of their work and with the exception of ferociously stoned (their first release), they are all awesome. this is my #1 favorite cd out of all their work. an adventure in musical styles, you will be surprised with every song.
Buy this CD... seriously........2002-01-23
Everything I was ever looking for in music, I found in Rapid City Muscle Car. Skyline Drive is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is probably the most diverse album you can get and all of the musicians are as talanted as they come. I picked up the CD in an obscure shop on a vacation in Virginia, and it really is all I can remember about the trip. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that Virginia was borning, that's just how powerful this album was. Okay maybe a little boring...
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, or at least listen to the samples. All of them.
CPD is the best band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-10-24
The Cherry Poppin Daddies are a wonderful band. I really like this CD. Infact out of the four it is my favorite. It has all different kinds of music. The Lyrics are touching. As I said it before they are a wonderful band!
this cd w/o a doubt receives a 5 from me~.......1999-10-17
ok, well, i heard zoot suit riot on the radio, went out and bought the cd. I LOVED IT. so a couple of months later I bought this one, "rapid city muscle car." Quite frankly, i didn't like it. I put it away for a while. When I started to like rock and ska more, I got it back out and started listening to it. I listened to some of the tracks, grew to love some of them, avoided the rest. Then one day, I was in a, well, mood, where I just put it on, and well, more of the songs grew on me. I listened to the entire CD every day, just lettin' it run, u know. I started to learn the words and started to feel the music, and the great, let me stress that, GREAT, lyrics, got me to thinkin' this ain't no ordinary band. I would start singing in school, it was to the point where I would wanna go home just to listen to it!(if i wasn't doing anything more useful than sittin' at a friends house) I mean I have not bought a full length CD in like a year, besides the CPD! why u ask? because I didn't need to! I mean i bought singles and everything but this CD, and the Zoot Suit Riot CD have kept me goin' for like a year and a half now. So let me tell you ppl who came to read my review, if you think this cd is swing, well it is a little, but if you're like me and all you lived for was swing, consider this cd the revolution in your life. it sure changed me, and i guarantee you it'll change you- It got your swing, some rock, punk, ska, even a touch o' country. no matter, you'll love it, so buy it.

Product Description
Educational Hip-Hop for Kids. A fun and funny, grooving, brilliant, creative, gentle, and kid-friendly- a one-of-a-kind treat for kids of all ages to enjoy. Smart Beats is a masterful combination of fun and educational children s music. Bingo Records Presents: Smart Beats, Volume 1 is a gem from the fertile mind of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Josh Nadel. Nadel, father, gifted composer and graduate of Berklee College Of Music, decided to combine a variety of musical elements in creating a unique children s project. He noted the popularity of rap and hip-hop and wondered why those genres could not be translated in an album for children that was something totally fresh and age appropriate yet not condescending. And so he went out and created just what he envisioned: a gentle, smart, melodic and grooving rap/hip-hop album that also happens to be exceptional children s educational music. Before you say: I don t like rap and hip-hop music or my kid is too young to listen to rap and hip-hop, listen to this CD. Forget everything you might think about these genres whether you re a huge fan of Kanye or think 50 Cent is how much you pay for a newspaper. Smart Beats songs focus on your family tree, dinosaurs, geography, recycling, activities and more. As with all music from Bingo Records, the production values are world class and will stand the test of the repeated listens that your children are going to ask for. To create this masterpiece Josh used some of the finest studio musicians from the Hip-Hop and R&B music scene: producers of hit records, rappers who appear on major label releases, great singers and players. Give it a try, we guarantee you ll be hooked.

GREAT ALBUM!.......2007-05-23
This is an unbelievably great album! A friend told me about it and my family is hooked. I often listen without my kids too. I cannot express how good the music, the lyrics, all of it is. Even if you do not like adult Hip-Hop (like me)- you will love this album.

Love it so much I Stole it from My Daughter.......2007-01-03
This CD arrived to us from Enfamil. It quickly became my "go-to" CD for stress relieve on many long flights to Asia.
The Kanon in D is Great. Weeping willow inspired me to attempt it on the piano myself.
No negatives other than the first track which is a spoken intro.
Smart Symphony.......2006-07-07
I first received this CD in 1997 free with the hospital baby bag. I have loved it so much that I bought another when I lost, no, when my teenagers borrowed and lost my first copy. The selection includes traditional favorites and very nice less heard pieces. Fuggi, fuggi, fuggi is performed by a great renaissance band that plays festivals around the country if you are a ren fest type person. I guess I'll buy my teens their own copy of Smart Symphonies.
Beautiful music - better than Baby Einstein.......2006-05-02
I used to love Baby Einstein CD's until I heard this Smart Symphonies CD. It's FAR better. My two month old also loves this. If he's fussy fussy in the evening, I can put this in and dance to it with him and he'll be sleeping in a couple of songs. Compared to Baby Einstein, this CD is more 'real' sounding, not as 'pingy'. The quality of the pieces is wonderful, the music is deep and resonating. The Fuggi, Fuggi, Fuggi piece (#7) is a family favorite to sing along with. This version of Pachelbel Canon is one of the best I've heard - with soft parts and soaring parts that lift your heart, and on some days bring tears to my eyes. There's a wide range of music types on here from classical to more the modern sounding piece by Joplin (Weeping Willow) and the piece by Meyer (Short Trip Home). All of the pieces sound great!
