5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Album.......2005-08-10

This album has influenced my life for the better. I have carried these songs through thick and thin.

Even though Chris has improved his voice since this early career album...and the recording is somewhat dated...it is still worth the listening. I think that is because the songs are solid and appropriate for thoughtful people.

The simplistic acoustic approach to Broken Wings coupled with the rare power of Chris' talented voice could give a rock goose-bumps.

Don't waste your money on greatest hits albums...buy his one and witness greatness.

5 out of 5 stars At the end of a perfect day.......2005-08-04

At the end of a perfect day, is a collection of wonderful songs that brings me back to a time of imagination and sweet love. I received the cassett tape in 1978 as a gift from a friend, and those songs have taken me through very sad and hard times. I was able to escape to an other place and find hope when I listened to "I'm going to an island" and "Around and around". I always loved history and Chris de Burght is a great story teller. I do have a few of his later albums but my opinion is that the earlier ones are the best. I still have my casette but I am ordering a CD for my daughter for a wedding present, she grew up listening to these songs, her favorite is "In a country church yard" which is also a very pretty song. Thank you, Jonathan, for the best music present I ever received.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless masterpiece.......2003-12-14

This is one album which can truly be called an 'album'. From the very first track, 'At the end of Perfect Day' sparkles with Chris De Burgh's innocent and beautiful song writing craftmanship. Don't bother with tedious Chris De Burgh "Best Of's" buy this album along with every other one he released before the 1980's, and enjoy a unique talent.

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Rosa Ponselle Prima Voce.......2006-03-18

These are old recordings, but great from the standpoint that it is the only way we can hear an almost faithful representation of her great voice.

It is a very fine selection of opera arias.

5 out of 5 stars Avatar or envoy of gods.......2006-02-14

Nasal ringing sound, like one of Caruso, Bechi but better. Frequent intrusions into men's repertoire ('Song of Indian merchant', 'In questa tomba oscura', 'Tre giorni son che Nina', 'Der Tod und das Madchen', etc).
    Best singer, best voice.
Early retirement because of higher nasal impedance.

5 out of 5 stars The most ravishing soprano voice. Ever........2005-08-23

Many would argue that this was the most beautiful soprano voice ever - or at least ever recorded. And it's a strong argument. Such richness, such depth, such warmth, such glorious freedom, such security - who else, before or since, can match them. Destinn? A bit blousy. Boninsegna? The voice changes through the passagio. Rethberg? Close, but no cigar. Tebaldi? A bit shrill by comparison. Callas? Dramatic, yes, but beautiful, I don't think so. Gheorgiu? Good by today's standards, but no contest.

No, this thick double-cream stream of tone is something to relish, to sit back and just enjoy. Try her 'Casta Diva' or 'Un bel di' to see how it feels when you approach every high note with joyous anticipation and not with the prospect of a wince (cf. Callas). The Nile aria from Aida is as near perfection as we have any right to expect this side of Opera Heaven - a wondrous piano high C. And on these discs you will also find one of my all-time favourite records - La Vergine degli Angeli from La Forza del Destino where you get, not only Ponselle's wondrous soprano at the top, but also her bass equivalent, Ezio Pinza, below. Two wonderful voices for the price of one.

The Nimbus sound, achieved by recording what actually emerges from the record into a room rather than directly off the shellac, is not to everyone's taste. But it is to mine. It allows the singer's voice to develop and bloom and sound, to my ears, very natural.

5 out of 5 stars The richest, most beautiful voice in history!.......2004-02-10

More beautiful than Caballe and Sutherland combined! A voice like a gleaming red ruby, the greatest lirico spinto of the century. Her Verdi-recordings have found their equals only in Callas' insightful performances but she did not quite possess the creamy, gleaming luxury timbre that Ponselle had. Being reported as one of the biggest voice in history (On occasions she drowned out Titta Ruffo!!!!) she will dazzle you like only Callas could afterwards. She debuted as Leonora in Forza in her teens (I think she was 18) with Caruso as Don Alvaro and made operatic history. Her Gioconda was as legendary as her Giulia (Vestale), repertoire only to be sung by Callas to the same perfection. Her brilliant Aida puts most others to shame, as do both of her Leonoras. Two complete opera-recordings with her exist: La Traviata and Carmen. Get them both and be charmed by the most gorgeous voice in history!

5 out of 5 stars Callas was correct..........2002-11-19

When I read that Maria Callas credited Rosa Ponselle as her vocal idol and only inspiration, the first thought I had was that if a soprano as great as Callas said this, is because it should be true. When I bought this CD I proved the affirmation was correct: you only have to hear Rosa Ponselle's voice and verify that she is one the best sopranos of the century, and why her voice was the inspiration of many Callas's roles, including Norma, La Gioconda and La vestale. The sound quality of this CD is incredible if we consider that the recordings dates from the 1920's

Hoping to keep a good thing going, industry newcomer Beach Street Records--home to smash-hit success Casting Crowns--has trotted out singer-songwriter Josh Bates and his Perfect Day debut release to the gate. Whether or not this twentysomething Kentuckian is a real thoroughbred remains to be seen. While his initial offering may not break any track records, it's credible enough to make Bates someone to watch. Vocally similar to Clay Crosse and Michael Passons (former Avalon member), Bates has a sweet and smooth style always kept in front of mix thanks to producers Mark Miller (Sawyer Brown front man) and Dale Oliver (who doubles with laying down much of the guitar and piano tracks). The title track and "You Say Come" are good examples of this as Bates's God-centric lyrical focus remains paramount over any guitar power chord. "Shine" and "Alive" are similar in style and feature very rich and dense vocals on the songs' choruses. Along with a good voice, Bates also can play guitar, mandolin, and piano, yet strangely his instrument work is limited here. His mandolin on "Less" nicely augments the strings on this ballad. The worship-tinged "King of Glory" is much in the same vein. Sure there's nothing here to overwhelm anyone, but sometimes a good listen from a fresh voice with a genuine approach can bring you to the home stretch. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Day is AWESOME!.......2005-10-13

The cd Perfect Day is awesome! The songs are GREAT and they definitely are filled with truth. My favorite songs on the cd are Perfect Day, King of Glory, and Never Give up on me. But all the songs are great. Josh has an amazing voice and definitely God gifted talents!

5 out of 5 stars Unashamedly Christian; I Love it!.......2005-10-07

I saw Josh Bates' PERFECT DAY cd at the store being promoted as "new from the producer of Casting Crowns" and since Casting Crowns has recently won great acclaim...I must admit the tactic worked since Bates' CD is now at home in my player. (True I previewed the album first listening to 30 seconds of each song on iTunes... so it wasn't completely blind faith.)

The music is a blend of rock/pop with some acoustic tendencies on the slower songs. A nice blend of fast and slow.

Perfect Day, the title track, is a nice rock song. It starts slow, but builds up to a faster-paced chorus. But whether fast or slow, it never loses its message. "The perfect day will come I know/When I will dance around the throne/With the angels I will give Him praise/I will finally get to meet/The One who made my joy complete/ The perfect One on the perfect day/I am waiting for the perfect day." The lyrics draw inspiration from 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18. 5 stars

Less, the second song, draws inspiration from Romans 5:8 and Romans 8:35-39. It quickly became one of my favorite songs on the album, and a definite "theme song" of mine. "I'm less than I thought I was/Convinced that I don't measure up/And I pretend I'm standing tall/'Til I hear my Father say/Even when I'm feeling small/He loves me, really loves me/And I know He knows best/Even on the days when I feel less." A definite 5 stars.

King of Glory, the third offering, is a great song as well. The message is just as strong as the previous songs. Each song on the album truly seems to be doctrinally on-target...praise-filled, love-filled, inspirational songs. 5 stars.

Shine, the fourth song, is still great. The message drawn from Matthew 5:16 tells Christians that they should be 'shining' to draw others to the Light of the world. Good song both musically and lyrically. 5 stars.

Never Give Up On Me is a slower song with encouraging lyrics which are what we all need to hear some days..."You never give up on me/No, You never give up on me/Though I'm weak, You are strong/You told me I still belong/No, You never, never give up on me." 4.5 stars

There Is None Like You brings the album back to its faster-pace, relatively speaking of course. A great song. Musically and lyrically satisfying. 4.5 stars.

Walking Through The Fire is a great song. With the message that "I am His child/ Even when I am afraid" and a great resounding chorus of "It's a matter of faith, hope, and love/A matter of trusting our Father above/When the flame is rising higher/Gonna keep on walking through the fire/through the fire" it is by far one of my personal favorites on the album. 5 stars

You Say Come, the eighth song, is inspired by Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus' invitation for the weary and heavy-laden. Great song. 5 stars.

Alive, a good song, 4.5 stars. Probably one of the fastest songs on the album.

Prodigal, a great song, drawn from Luke 15. 5 stars.

Josh Bates' album PERFECT DAY is an unashamedly Christian album, abundant in truth, hope, encouragement, and praise. A great relief when so many so-called 'Christian' groups release albums with wishy-washy songs which may or may not have a Christian message. I believe that you shouldn't have to search to find hidden layers of 'Christian' meanings in songs. The message should be LOUD and CLEAR.

Josh Bates' album is great. And I am excited to find yet another Christian artist who writes or co-writes many of his own songs.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical covers album.......2006-10-18

Chris Whitley's album, Perfect Day, was released in 2000. For this project, he enlisted drummer Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood to accompany him on this set of cover songs, which consisted of poetic rock songs and blues tunes, some of which are very obscure. Martin and Wood's use of space, along with Chris' distinctive voice and guitar work, results in an album that sounds quite different from most releases that consist of cover songs. The versions of Bob Dylan's "Spanish Harlem Incident" and "4th Time Around" are outstanding as Chris' falsetto sounds beautiful in these settings. These tracks, along with their take on Hendrix's "Drifting", are the only tracks that sound remotely close to the originals. A previous reviewer commented how loose this album was and that is clearly evident in their readings of the blues classics "She's Alright", "Smokestack Lightning", and "Stones in My Passway." "China Gate", which was previously recorded by Nat King Cole of all people, is outstanding as Chris sings it in a very low register while the band provides a sparse backdrop. Chris also does an awesome job on the title track. Originally written by Lou Reed and performed with an orchestra on his Transformer album (thanks for the correction, Thomas), the band's understated performance shows the song's inner beauty for the first time. The version of the obscure "Wild Ox Moan" is very good while their take on the Doors' "Crystal Ship" is quite haunting. The oft-covered "Spoonful" is pretty sloppy but at least they don't play it straight. All told, while this isn't on par with his best work, it is still a very good album that shows the strengths of all the talents involved.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing cover album.......2006-01-10

Chris made those songs his. His covers make the original artist's versions pale in comparision. This is an amazing cd. Worth the price for the cover of "Perfect Day" alone. True Chris Whitley fans will NOT be disappointed. I question the musical aptitude of anyone who pans this album.

      5 out of 5 stars Whitley interpretations.......2005-03-05

This is Whiley's cover album; Ho, Hum, you might say. There's nothing ordinary about this collection, however, For one thing, each song is hand picked with such precision that they might have been written for him. Not one song even vaguely resembles the original in its interpretation, as Whitley makes each selection entirely his own. This is an admirable feat for an album that covers such diverse artists as Hendrix, Dylan, and the Doors. And he does it in the minimalist style that I think best shocases his unique talent.
A dreamy, introspective album of toned down vocals and delicious chops, "Perfect Day" is essential for anyone who loves Whitley for his acoustic blues.

1 out of 5 stars Wild Ox Moan?.......2002-08-30

I special ordered this album after reading a review in Jazziz praising the artist and his work. One week later I couldn't wait to unwrap it and stuff it into my CD player ...........AWFUL, pure and simple. As I continue to read flowery reviews I am bewildered. Weak and reedy voice, poor recording, background instrumentals muffled and distracting. The title Wild Ox Moan about says it all. Honestly, I cannot make it through a single song or through the album at a single sitting.

      1 out of 5 stars TOO HIGH.......2002-07-15

I have always admired Chris Whitley and have seen him live several times. But this CD...he must have owed someone some heavy money to put this thing out for sale. Take a look at the photo on the cover. It pretty much says it all. It's like some sort of bizarre Disney ride, "You must be this high to like this album". Sorry Chris, reload and try again.

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Brian Robertson changes the band.......2007-04-30

This is the only cd with Brian Robertson, is one of my favorite.

      4 out of 5 stars good post-Eddie offering.......2006-11-27

[...]"Another Perfect Day" comes closest to Clarke's work, just for the presence of ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson, who, like Clarke, had a distinctive style and years of playing under his belt before joining Motorhead for this one album.
While "Another Perfect Day" features the most intricate arrangements in the band's repetroire, it still bashes and crashes along, courtesy of Lemmy and Philthy Animal Taylor's brutal rhythm section. "I Got Mine", the title track, "Die You Bastard" and "Shine" are standouts.
I have not purchased the remastered version yet, hence the four stars instead of five. My original mix version is horrible, with the bass and drums almost non-existent, buried several miles away in the background. With the new mix, hopefully those faults have been corrected, because "Another Perfect Day" does belong in the same class as "Ace Of Spades" and "Bomber".

5 out of 5 stars in jail or dead.......2006-05-06

I'm listening to "marching off to war" 4th song on the album now after about 20 yrs. This album is off the fu**ing richter!!! blowing all posers away!!!! in your face mother f****s!!!! This is it!!! Get it! Get it Now!!! "It's just a holiday, back at the fuuny farm!"

5 out of 5 stars Robertson is brilliant.......2006-01-04

Easily the best guitarist this band has ever seen and will ever see. He is the only one who brought true depth and quality to the sound of this band by adding bass lines behind tone-deaf Lemmy's over-cranked bass.

Solos that are some of the best, most melodic solos recorded in their history. Robertson not only put down some serious deep riffs, he also challenged filthy Phil and Lemmy to perform at their best.

This album, along with Robertson's work, never received the recognition it was due. If you take the time to listen to the back-bass lines and solo work, you will appreciate what is Robertson's career pinnacle. Compare it to the live Hoochie Coochie Man hollow sound and you can see why Robertson became frustrated with the semi-retarded antics of Lemmy and his overall indifference to musical depth and quality.

This album burns and demands respect due to a serious axeman who I would love to see future work from. As far as overall Motorhead, not much else compares to this album.

5 out of 5 stars This album will stick.......2005-12-11

This is a really strong but, sadly, lost album in Motorhead's vast catalog. The combination of Lemmy's rough, grinding bass and Brian Robertson's melodic guitar work creates an awesome dynamic. With all due respect to "Fast" Eddie, he really can't compete with Brian. The licks Brian lays out in "Dancing on your grave" and "I got mine" will stick in your head like glue. "Another perfect day" is another super tune...with spot-on lyrics by Lemmy about the hell of the alcoholic. I originally got this album on vinyl in the mid-80s as a junior metal-head and to this day I still spin it.
