A somewhat disappointing release from Tangerine Dream, Melrose, their last studio release for Private Music, was certainly targeted to capture the "adult alternative" market. The trio essentially take the rhythm-driven approach of Optical Race and make it more palatable and radio-friendly, as evidenced by the lackluster sax melodies on the title track. The album features many instrumentals that have a similar feeling--relatively energetic and upbeat, but also a bit fluffy. There are some grittier moments to be found, foremost on the haunting "Three Bikes in the Sky," a slow-moving, atmospheric piece with searing electric guitar work, while the lively electro-rock of "Dolls in the Shadow" and "Yucatan" also stand out. Tangerine Dream have never shied away from the obvious synthetic sounds of their work--it's a big part of their raison d'etre, after all--but here the machines seem to exert just as much influence as the humans behind them. Given Melrose's even-keeled nature, however, this album does make for agreeable background listening. --Bryan Reesman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

5 out of 5 stars Like being there.......2007-07-05

Have seen the play twice. This album lets me relive the experience anytime anyplace. A great piece of Rock n roll history.

5 out of 5 stars A step back in musical time.......2007-07-05

My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great music, but missing too much.......2007-07-04

I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars The magic is back............2007-06-22

After 1989's slightly disappointing "Lily On The Beach", Tangerine Dream came back the following year (as a trio once again with Edgar's son Jerome joining the fold) with a stunning piece of work.

Unlike the robotic and often cartoonish "Lily", "Melrose" delivers warm, passionate and exciting music. Hubert Waldner provides a saxophone for the title track while the guitars on Yucatan and Electric Lion are just simply amazing.

The final track, "Cool At Heart" is a piano lullably that one would not ordinarily identify as a TD song. This song serves as a calm, soul-soothing finale to a great album.

4 out of 5 stars T.D.'s "Melrose" their most haunting.......2005-10-06

I listen to this c.d. about three times a week, and have since I purchased it 15 years ago. I think this one along with most of their work since 1985's "Hyperborea" is their greatest work. Talk about haunting! And the piece entitled 'Electric Lion' is one of their most energy-driven, with an awesome use of electric guitar near the end that ultimately gives it a hard rock sound. While "Melrose" is not their #1 best c.d. it is definately in the Top 5 in my book. I highly recommend this c.d.if you enjoy haunting electronica with a hard rock overtones.

5 out of 5 stars Just what you want: Mellow, top-quality new age music,.......2005-02-01

A wonderful disc to relax to, and at the same time listen carefully to. You can put it on and set the volume for background levels, and you'll be peacefully conveyed to a place where all is calm, tranquil and, in fact, harmonious. At the same time, if your mind demands more stimulation all you have to do is lift your eyes and listen more closely, and you'll be stimulated by top-flight musicians, exploring new worlds of emotional expressiveness.

This is a wonderful album, no doubt about it. If you'd like music that soothes you at the same time as stimulating you, this is right up your alley. Energetic, dynamic and yet mellow -- no easy feat -- by three of the best in the business. This is an excellent album and a fine purchase. I'm still playing it, and enjoying it, frequently after nearly fifteen years.

5 out of 5 stars Another creative, high-energy album from Tangerine Dream!.......2004-01-01

Jerome Froese joins Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger for another intense foray into the world of electronic music. Up-tempo tracks such as "Melrose", "Yucatan" and "Rolling Down Cahuenga" predominate, fiery, percussive and minor in tone with structures that build and stirring percussive beats that drive ever-forward. The interspersed slower tracks are a nice compliment to all of this, gentle and really very pretty (especially the wistful closing selection, "Cool at Heart"). Saxophonist Hubert Waldner, who also played on the group's previous release, "Lily on the Beach", joins the core trio here as well, wailing away to great effect on the opening track. What I like about Tangerine Dream's work is that it is unapologetically electronic, making full use of synthesizers by playing to their strengths--variety, volume and modernity--rather than trying to use the keyboards to emulate the sound of, say, string orchestras or folk instruments (which they really can't match ...yet...). By taking this approach, Tangerine Dream creates vibrant, new music--richly textured, intelligently structured, and all their own. Try their next release, "Tyger" for some creative departures.

4 out of 5 stars Melrose: On the Road.......2003-02-14

Although many TD fans seem to be divided into two camps, pre-'83 and post-'83, I confessedly like pretty well all of it. There are times when a good book and an album like "Zeit" go together, or there times when a long highway drive finds "Melrose" and some of it's likenesses more appealing. Favorite tracks "Dolls in the Shadow", "Art of Vision", and "Rolling Down Cahuenga" are good driving music, that you can still converse to with a passenger. This CD being the culmination of what TD's website calls, "The Melrose Years", they are characterized by prominent use of electronic percussion, to drive fairly simple yet memorable melodies along the way. The only thing that prevents me from giving "Melrose" a 5-star rating is the use of the electric guitar. Unlike almost everything else they do, I find the guitar solos a bit too abrasive for my middle-aged tastes. As a final note, if you want soemthing to travel with, "Melrose" is a good companion, along with "Optical race" and "Lily on the Beach".

3 out of 5 stars Maybe you need to be from Boston.......2006-02-10

I'm not sure why--because the show took place in LA--but three of the songs are by artists from Massachusetts (like me). Ten-plus years on, I still enjoy hearing Letters to Cleo stepping up to the Big Leagues by having a song on this soundtrack. And the Aimee Mann song is simple and gorgeous.

4 out of 5 stars Worth It for Annie Lennox.......2006-01-05

I bought this soundtrack for Annie Lennox's "Precious." This is the single edit version of the song that's difficult to find.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty sweet soundtrack....for television.......2004-02-19

I absolutely loved this cd, but there aren't many songs on it and a couple of them NEED to be skipped. However, it's worth it to buy this album just for the sake of a few choice tracks. "Here and Now" by Letters to Cleo quickly became my fave song of the mid-90's upon hearing it's confusion of a chorus. "Baby I Can't Please You" and "That's Just What You Are" are perfect for any woman needing to vent about that ridiculously clueless guy. "I'm Jealous" could probably hit home with any listener, we've all felt that way at some point. "How Was It For You" is an amazing tune by James which should not be ignored. Buy this cd! It's worth it!!!

2 out of 5 stars out of theme.......2002-05-07

I return this CD to the [store], really disgusted. I don't find in it the theme of Melrose Place television series when is supposed to be there. I know that many people suffer that
same bad experience. But the worst thing is...where I can find it?.... I apreciate the information like many others. I am a fan of Melrose Place series and I hope that somebody can tell me at least which is the group that plays on it. In that way I wil try to find something about their music.

...

I will appreciate...thanks.

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-07-05

i was a wedding dj, and this album had quite alot of good music for coctail hours and dinners. (except for "love will bring you back"..not a wedding appropriate tune)

i have found myself listening to i in my car

its good stuff, mostly instrumental

5 out of 5 stars Love This CD.......2001-08-14

Black Diamond (acoustic version) by The Rippingtons is a great guitar music. Russ Freeman is at his best in this track. I actually compared this recording versus that from the Rippington's own CD but this (Melrose Place Jazz CD) is way better.

Lisa Fischer's "Way Past Goddbye" has great vocals!

Tom's Scott's "Amanda's Song" is another great recording.

If you are an audiophile like me, these 3 songs are a good reason to buy this CD. I have more than 400 CD's and I always like to play this CD.

4 out of 5 stars I miss the show!.......1999-07-04

I'm not really a big Jazz fan at all but after Melrose's final episode i decided to buy this Cd and i listen to the theme song every night. For all those mournful Melrose addicts out there i recomend this Cd because it might just bring back some of your favorite memories. That is if you can get past some of the bad songs!

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you........1999-05-15

This Cd is one of the best jazz Cd's Ive bought. Tom Scott's cover of " Love Will Lead You Back" is one of the best covers of a song I've heard in a very long time. The highly underated Lisa Fischer gives a spectacular vocal performance of " Way Past Goodbye". The entire CD is rated A-1 from beginning to end.

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the TV tie in, and you've got a great CD.......1998-05-14

This is a CD I put in when I'm having company and want great background music. Once I got past the somewhat obnoxious Melrose Place cover, I dicovered a great collection of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Between the Sighs by Ian Melrose.......2003-04-07

Ian Melrose has won awards for his guitar style. If you like the finger-style guitar of John Renbourn, you will like Ian Melrose. The notes a clear and bell-like and the tunes range from Celtic to Latin-American. Check out his playing with "Norland Wind", "Kelpie" and the Clannad CD, "Landmarks". In a nutshell, Ian Melrose is the guitarist's guitarist. Ian also plays some very haunting low whistle and Dobro that will have you waiting for the sweet voice of Alison Krauss to start singing.

Liszt's choral works are a bit of a innovation. While he was causing controversy with his invention of the 'symphonic poem', his sacred choral works were often criticized because of their secular background.
The Corydon Singers have performed his 'Missa Choralis' very well. Sometimes, I feel that it is quite moving-especially in the Credo, when the choir proclaims the first paragraph of the Latin text. Then it becomes slow and solemn at the part where the soloists tell of the Life of our Lord Jesus Christ. The choir once again returns to it's other tempo at the Ressurection as Christ triumph's over death.
The 'Via Crucis' is a rather odd work. It obviously, was Liszt's depiction of the fourteen stations in the catholic church starting where Jesus Christ is condemned to death and ending with his burial in the tomb. The 'Via Crucis' has instrumental 'movements' where the organ has solos, and Thomas Trotter has done a fairly well job.

I highly recomend this for those who appreciate pure and clear voices. Oh, and don't worry if you can't understand Latin or German. The paper inside gives an English translation.

    5 out of 5 stars Introspective Liszt.......2005-11-06

Liszt's sacred choral works are somewhat of an enigma. While his piano and orchestral music were looking forward and causing controversy, his choral music looks to the past and are, generally speaking, much more introverted and personal works. This CD has one mass, the Missa Choralis for chorus and organ, and a setting of the stations of the cross, the Via Crucis for chorus and organ.

The Missa Choralis is kind of an odd duck; obviously influenced by the Catholic Church's past, particularly the Palestrina tradition and plainsong, it also looks forward with unusual progressions and unexpected harmonies. Liszt sets the five parts of the mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Benedictus, and Agnus Dei). The choral parts on the page are very singable, rarely utilizing outlandish leaps (a Palestrinian influence?), but the notes just don't go where you expect them to go. The opening of the Kyrie and Credo are definitely chant based, but Liszt puts them in a semi-dance-like garb. The outgoing Gloria and Credo are balanced by the beautifully lyric Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. The music seems perfectly written for a cathedral. The organ does little else but support the choir and the organ could easily be omitted altogether.

Via Crucis is a setting of 14 pictures or scenes leading to the cruxifiction and eventual resurrection of Christ. Much more programmatic then the Mass, Liszt seems more able to express his innate sense of Romanticism through a visual program. The organ plays a major role as soloist in this work and lets Liszt create as many timbres as he needs. Highly emotional, the subject matter is very intense and the music portrays it well. From Jesus taking up the cross, to being nailed to the cross, to being laid in the tomb, this 30+ minute work is emotionally draining. Liszt utilizes chorus and soloists in many different combinations to tell the story, and the harmonic language is very advanced, yet the overall nature is very subdued and serious. A very unique work.

The English based Corydon Singers sing extremely well on some difficult music (they make it seem easy). The church they are performing in is very spacious, but this does not diminish the cleanliness of sound, nor does the organ drown out the chorus. While Liszt's works represented here are not the showstoppers we are used to, they provide a glimpse into a highly spiritual man. The music is intense and beautiful, great choir music by an instrumental master.

      Album Description

If you google Frank Melrose you'll meet Jelly Roll Morton. The listing in the first Hot Discography of his piano solos, Pass The Jug and Jelly Roll Stomp, said that Frank Melrose was a pseudonym for Morton!

The two met when Jelly was being published by Melrose's brothers (Walter and Lester) who had promoted Jelly's classic Victor records. They spent a lot of time together checking out pianos and records and Jelly was a frequent visitor in Frank's home. But Melrose was no copycat - he had his own music. Complete notes enclosed by Bob Koester.
