Man-Made
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The long-awaited 7th studio album from Scotland's Teenage Fanclub is finally nearing release. The band's meteoric rise to critical acclaim in the early 1990's as part of the Creation Records family (a family which also included My Bloody Valentine) and later Geffen Records on which they released Bandwagonesque (an album heralded by Spin Magazine as Best Album of 1991 and humorously by others as "a shit album with shit songs") has been, at times, inconsistent. In spite of personnel changes and critical woes, the band has never wavered from its endearing and affectionate embrace of its heroes -- Big Star, The Beatles, Neil Young, and The Byrds. Man-Made is no exception to the rule and should be universally heralded by critics as one of Teenage Fanclub's best efforts (if not their very best). These 12 songs find harmonic convergences of pitch-perfect vocals, warm and inviting multi-layered fuzztone guitars and keyboards planting their classic brand of '60s and '70s pop earworms gently. If the hundreds of bands that were launched in the wake of Teenage Fanclub's popularity weren't enough evidence, then Man-Made is proof positive of why the Fannies no longer merely pay homage to their power pop influences; they have firmly established their place among the upper echelons of power pop's most important and influential artists. Pema. 2005. * No US release until June.

I think this album is crunk, emotional, and makes you think a little, unfortunaltey you don't hear that these days. Silk isn't the best rapper ever but I got mad resprect for this guy, not glorifying how many girls he'd slept with.

2.5 star 3rd solo from Silkk.......2005-08-20
Just 11 months since his 2nd album (and his best solo) was released, Silkk comes back with another 18 song album, but it isn't really worth the money, and probably 1 of the 3 worst No Limit cd's I have (I have around 16 or 17). It has guests on 13 of the 18 (like most No Limit releases) and other then Jay-Z & Mya they're all from the No Limit camp. It has 1 classic, 1 almost classic, 3 good songs, 6 ok songs, and 7 I skip. Of the 18 only 5 are really worth listenting to. Production is good and bad (and horrible on 2 songs), and mostly all done by Beats by the Pound crew. KLC did 6 songs, Craig B did 4, Carlos Stephens, & Sons of Funk each did 2, and DJ Whop, Mo B Dick, O'Dell, and Whole Records all did 1. Only get this if you are a die hard fan of Silkk, other wise download the few good songs.

Misplaced Homoeroticism.......2004-05-26
Cindra Murfries (better known to his fans as C-Murder) has given us yet another tiresome panegyric to the delights and splendors of "getting down with my homeys" in his new album, cleverly titled "Made It With A Man" (no kidding, CM, when have you ever "made it" with anything else?)
If you're really into graphic descriptions of wrong-end loving, then this is the rapper for you. If you aren't hopelessly obsessed with unnatural penetration between two "homeys" then I suggest you skip this one and buy Slicey Dice's greatest hits compilation, which should be out next month. THAT album is definitely worth the wait.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

No one sings about wedding rings better than Randy Travis. He launched his career with a song about a man staring at the ring "On the Other Hand." On "Day One" from this album, a man stares at the ring his wife left behind, and the bottomless ache of Travis's baritone purr captures the husband's anguish. Real country music is marriage music. It's not about brand-new love; it's about love that's been around the block a few times, and Travis makes you hear the history behind every betrayal, every separation, every reconciliation. Coproducers James Stroud and Byron Gallimore crank up the pop-rock drums and guitars, but in the center of it all is one of the greatest country voices of all time. Not all the material is worthy of that voice, but when Travis sings about a macho husband falling apart or a wife getting ready to leave or a husband inadvertently mentioning the other woman, no one can touch him. Who else under the age of 50 could be as convincing on a song called "The Family Bible and the Farmer's Almanac"? --Geoffrey Himes

Great Album.......2003-07-05
I have always loved Randy Travis and he proves he's still got it. My favorite song on this album was "No Reason to Change". It has a great tune and message. The song was written by Mentor Williams and I have always been a fan of his songs, he wrote the hit Drift away. This is a great album, you need to get it :)
Amazing voice - Average songs.......2002-10-19
Randy needed a tremendous album to reclaim his popularity as one of country music's best. His voice makes these mostly mediocre songs enjoyable. But Randy's voice wrapped around better songs could go a long way to reviving his singing career. If you haven't already, check out Inspirational Journey. It's a Christian album that even the secular can enjoy!
Randy does it again!.......2001-08-23
I have every one of Randy's cds up to date and i rate this one up at the top. I love the way his voice comes out strong in the main song "A man ain't made of stone" This one and his insperational Journey are 2 of my favorites! Buy this one you won't be sorry!!
Still No. 1 in my Book -- It's the Voice!.......2000-09-16
Okay, so he's done better. But you have to admit, it's impossible for this artist to make a bad album. Simply, the finest male vocalist in country today.
Takes me to another world.......2000-03-03
Someone said of this album that "this is the kind of singing Grammies were made for." I can't think of a better way to describe it.

Clocking in at nearly 80 minutes, this CD of Viennese operetta arias should carry a surgeon general's warning against overdosing on sugary confections. The music's grand, though, and with so many favorite operetta hits zipping by, the time flies. Not all the way back to old Vienna, however, since today's all-stars can't challenge memories of Richard Tauber, Josef Schmidt, and other stylish exponents of singing in three-quarter time. But they acquit themselves well, and sopranos Eva Lind and Andrea Rost are especially fetching. Baritone Thomas Hampson is idiomatic and also sounds like he's having fun, while Placido Domingo gives considerable pleasure. José Carreras's fans will be disappointed--he's clueless in Vienna. But for a real treat, listen to Rost's "Meine Lippen" from Lehar's Giuditta. Hot stuff! --Dan Davis

Tribute to operetta.......2000-08-23
Being a Lehar fan, I did enjoy this CD. I felt more pieces could have been heard, but, as it was a concert, perhaps there were more selections played than recorded. Although Thomas Hampson is a ggreat singer - he was a little too heavy for some of his songs. Domingo, as always terrific and I thought Carreras was in great voice. However, some of the sopranos were inclined to be rather "sreechy". Basically, I though, I thoroughly enjoyed the CD.

The title Man-Made runs the risk of messing with diehards' notion of what Teenage Fanclub is all about--melodic, classic-era indie pop a la Badfinger and Big Star--but concerns that the Scottish four-piece has swerved from its organic sensibility in favor of something souped-up and synthetic are unfounded. Back in the studio for the band's seventh disc (and its first recorded in the U.S., with Tortoise's John McEntire producing) are the trio of gifted songwriters and instrumentalists that have supplied this outfit with a surplus of talent since it formed in 1990. Norman Blake, Gerard Love, and Raymond McGinley each contribute four songs; parsing who wrote what, as usual, makes for the perfect rock-geek parlor game: is the straightforward, jaunty "It's All in My Mind" (Blake) stronger than the harder-rocking, riffy "Time Stops" (Love) or the earnest "Feel" (McGinley)? In the end the correct answer is who cares: Teenage Fanclub is back. Their vibe continues to be timeless, accessible, and as satisfyingly cool as it's ever been. -Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Their first studio album since 2000's "Howdy". A classic Fanclub record in every sense, with more songs of wisdom, change, and love. In tone and arrangement, the record handsomely demonstrates the less-is-more maxim, being both airier and lighter of touch than its predecessors. Magazine "Uncut" gives it 4 stars out of 5, noting, "MAN-MADE is full of texture and shade, a record of constantly unfolding pleasures....[They] remain the perfect assimilation of West Coast craft and old-school indie-guile."
Customer Reviews:
De do do do, de da da da.......2006-08-08
Tortoise's John McEntire helped produce this album. His presence isn't immediately discernible, but the album does have a certain compressed, warm and fuzzy sound that's unique to this recording. It's probably one of the more laid back records the group has released. The songs all have a sameness about them, and it took a few listens to really appreciate the distinctions. The lyrics help. Over fifteen years, the band has consistently filled records with catchy, seemingly effortless, pop gems. Every song here is like listening to someone magically reach out to a loved one over an impossible distance. Nice.
Best Fanclub Album in Years.......2006-01-30
This album is so strong all the way though. This time the best songs are written by Gerry (Time Stops, Fallen Leaves) and Raymond (Nowhere, Only With You, Feel and Don't Hide). I cannot recommend this album enough, especially if you dig laid back, mellow rock.
It's funny that three of rock's best songwriters are in this band that are too often overlooked. Buy the CD and make these songs your personal treasure.

While this may not be the best Teenage Fanclub cd, it is the best cd of 2005. I have the other TF cds including Howdy and the one with Jad Fair. I'm a big fan of Big Star and those Bands that have used Big Star as a launcing pad. This along with bands like the Apartments, the Auteurs, the Go-Betweens, and the Chills can keep your cd changer and mind filled. While the Velvet Crush may not be able to mine anything on Man-Made, you will find the influences you are looking for. Love where 60's music meets maturity, you can't go wrong here.

excellent representation of an unknown 20th century master.......2004-02-24
From www.rebeccaclarke.org
The songs on this disk represent a wide range of Clarke's output, from the earliest mature songs ("Tears," "The Cloths of Heaven," ca. 1912) to her last completed work ("God Made a Tree," 1954, according to the catalogue by her estate manager, Christopher Johnson), and music both published (some from the 1994 collection reprinted by Boosey & Hawkes) and still unpublished ("Tears," "Tiger, Tiger" and "The Donkey"). 53 songs by Clarke survive (mostly for solo voice and piano, and also several other combinations including the songs arranged for voice and violin).
John Masefield was not yet Poet Laureate of Great Britain when Clarke met him in 1925 to discuss her settings of his writings. "June Twilight" and "The Seal Man" both evoke undulating scenes of nature, but there the similarities end. "June Twilight" is rapturous in its joy of a country scene, wistful only at the temporal finiteness of that beauty. A prose text from Masefield's A Mainsail Haul, Clarke set "The Seal Man" in 1922. Based on the Celtic myth of the seal who takes on the form of a man in order to lure women to their death in the sea, the legend reverses the genders of the Greek myth of the Siren. This declamatory prose setting is one of which she always spoke of as being one of her favorites.
W. B. Yeats was a favorite poet of composers of Clarke's generation. She dedicated "Shy One" "The Cloths of Heaven" to the famous English tenor Gervase Elwes, who was one of the first to champion her music, and who sang her music in New York City just days before his 1921 death in a Boston train accident. Clarke's setting of "Shy One" is warmly tinged with modal flavor and a strongly profiled melody; yet the Musical Times attacked its use of dissonance.
With its imagery of flowers and romance, Anna Wickham's poem "The Cherry Blossom Wand" might at first glance seem to be cheerful, but closer reading reveals a dark cynicism. The poem was widely read when it was first published in 1915, but although labeled "To be set to music" (Wickham herself trained as a singer), Clarke's is the only setting. Clarke knew the poet through their mutual friend, cellist May Mukle.
Clarke would go on to set three more works by women poets to music, the resulting songs a small but distinct part of her output. Ella Young, an Irish poet and novelist, settled in California in 1925. Clarke's setting of Young's "Greeting" is a small but strongly chiseled lyrical expression. Starting with rolling waves and buoyant melody, the mention of a lost love darkens the mood and leads to harmonic twists and shifts of texture.
The poet of "God Made a Tree," Katherine Kendall, is unknown in literature and was a British friend of Clarke, and a devout Catholic. Rebecca and her siblings were raised "in the strictest irreligion," as one of her nieces recalls, but did gain an informal interest in western religion and Christianity as shown by her Psalm settings of the early 1920s, and this setting of the Kendall text, and also the setting of Chesterton's wry but profound Palm Sunday text, "The Donkey"; interestingly, none of these religious-themed works were published. Clarke dedicated "The Donkey" to the Danish dramatic soprano Povla Frijsch in 1941. Frijsch had long championed Clarke's songs, naming her in a Musical America interview as among her favorite American composers. Frijsch's release of "Shy One" on a recording, the first of Clarke's music, may have motivated the dedication.
Clarke's setting of Psalm 63 was one of the works she showed to Gustav Holst in 1921 in order to receive his opinion and advice. It reveals the influence of Ernst Bloch, as well as Clarke's exposure to Jewish chanting through her London friends the Bentwiches.
While many of Clarke's British contemporaries set texts from A. E. Housman's early publication A Shropshire Lad, Clarke was the first to turn to his Late Poems, from which "Eight O'Clock" is drawn. Clarke illustrates the concise text in a work of devastating impact.
The anonymous poem "Tears" (labeled by Clarke as "Old Chinese Words") reveals Clarke's fascination with the Far East, which had grown since encountering a Javanese Gamelan at the World Exposition in Paris in 1900. The spacious span of its opening, and its use of wholetone scales create an austere and exotic atmosphere.
"Come, O Come my Life's Delight" offers a rapturous view of love. Based on words set by the seventh-century Thomas Campion, Clarke based this 1924 song on her own earlier choral setting. Claude Flight, author of "The Aspidistra," was an artist and friend of Clarke's. Parodying the conventions of the Victorian Parlour, "The Aspidistra" is a bold statement in its outrageous humour.
The Blake settings "Cradle Song" and "Infant Joy," evoke the traditional maternal position. Since Clarke had no children, these works might be understood as a musical expression of her perceived feminine role. "Cradle Song" employs clarity of structure and rhythm, and accessible poetic scansion; these are enriched by the impressionist vocabulary of chordal parallelism. Also a Blake setting, "Infant Joy" is a gem, a radiant outburst of devotion. Clarke also wrote several instrumental lullabies, with one for violin and voice included here.
"Tiger, Tiger" also sets Blake, a text that Benjamin Britten would turn to in the 1960s in his much more reserved setting. Clarke's work is her darkest song, with swirling chromaticism bordering on the expressionist, matching the text's evocation of the erotic and the unknowable subconscious realm. Clarke probably wrote "Tiger, Tiger" with John Goss in mind, as she relentlessly revised it during her romantic entanglement with him (ca. 1929-1933); she was also discouraged by a publisher's rejection of the work; they no doubt preferred lighter fare, especially from women. The disturbing power of "Tiger, Tiger" suggests that Clarke deserves consideration as a major composer of twentieth century song.
Like most violists, Clarke started on the violin as a child, switching to the viola while at the Royal College, and at the suggestion of Stanford. Yet, she sometimes still played the violin, in family or informal settings, or in her role as a versatile freelance musician. A former teacher and suitor, Percy Miles, died in 1922 leaving Clarke a Stradivarius violin, which she occasionally played in subsequent years.
"Midsummer Moon" was dedicated to Adila Fachiri, with whom Clarke often performed in ensemble concerts in England. "Starting a fiddle piece using some old scraps," she wrote of the work in February of 1924, a vivid description reflecting Clarke's hobby as an avid sewer. The Musical Times noted the brilliance of the work, while determined to consider it only as representative of the "'new' woman composer."
The arrangements of Old English Songs, and Irish Folk Songs for voice and violin were among Clarke's most popular pieces, which she sometimes played for pleasure as well as in concert settings. Their folk and traditional themes remind us that Clarke should be squarely placed in the mainstream of the English Musical Renaissance, since they both suggest her influence by Holst's settings of the same unusual combination, and her possible influence on Vaughan Williams who would write for voice and violin in 1928.

Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2005-09-13
I first heard Carptree in 2003. Their brilliant second album entitled Superhero from that year was my album of the year back then, and for good reason.
Man Made Machine is a strong forward leap from Superhero opening up new ground while retaining the catchy, quirkiness and brilliant melodious flavor of SH. The writing is sublime and the playing is extaordinary. And what do you know, the 'No Future Orchestra' from SH had a future afterall, giving solid foundations to the wonderful writing and playing of Carl Westholm and exquisit vocals of Niclas Flink.
The catchy hooks and quirky phrases combined with the Gabrielesque vocals of Niclas Flink remind me of another outstanding 'left of centre' album from 1975. Split Enz: Mental Notes.
All in all, Man Made Machine is brilliant, not instantly accessible but those who persevere will be highly rewarded.

Customer Reviews:
HIS BEST YET!.......2006-10-01
I'm a big fan of blues and have always liked Studebaker John's music. To be equally adept at guitar, harp, singing, and writing is no small feat, but he always seems to pull it off. "Self Made Man" is his best CD to date, full of great tunes. His guitar playing seems to have been raised to a new level here. It is just outstanding. His band just chugs right along with him.My only complaint is I had to special order the disc. His record company should get more of them out there. Buy it, believe me you won't regret it.
A fantastic CD from an original bluesman!.......2006-07-14
I was fortunate enough to catch Studebaker John & the Hawks live a few weeks ago at the Highway 99 Blues Club in Seattle and was totally blown away! This was the first time I had ever seen anyone play kicking, funky rhythm guitar with one hand and scorching blues harmonica with the other hand all at the same time! When he put down his harmonica and picked up his guitar slide, I was blown away all over again! During this performance, Studebaker John played most of the songs from the Self-Made Man CD. I can attest that the CD is true to his live performance. His songs are well crafted, his lyrics are entertaining and his timing is impeccible! If you like funky, hard-edged blues with incredible harmonica and slide guitar, this CD is a must-have! I like every song on the CD, but "Self-Made Man", "The Hard Way" and "Hoo Doo You" are my favorites. Highly recommended!
