Journey of Love

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Sammie Thompson and music have been lifelong companions. Born into a musical family, she made her first recording at age five and debut as a band vocalist at age 13. Her first efforts at songwriting led several publishing contracts in Nashville, where she was encouraged to launch a career as a pianist/vocalist/songwriter. In 1973, Sammie became a professional entertainer and has since performed throughout the U.S., including six years in Hawaii, in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, presenting music as she lives life - from the heart. She has won about a dozen awards for songwriting and has recorded seven CDs of her originial music to date.

Sammie is also an award winning newspaper writer and editor (Arizona Press Women, 1982) and photographer (Fred Harvey Annual Employee Photo Contest, 1982).

In 1996, Sammie became one of thte first Certified Music Practitioners in the world, began to play harp and crated new music for therapeutic use, resulting in a new healing modality called musical massage. Since then, she has actively pioneered, researched, and documented its use playing bedside music for over 5,000 hospital, hospice and private patients.

Album Description
Journey of Love celebrates the journey of life...combining the soothing, healig purity of the harp with the loving vocal message in each hummable, singable, danceable song. Each of these numbers was especially composed, selected and arranged with care to offer a musical massage for the heart and spirit. Two selections are presented with ukulele accompaniment, adding a touch of the special "Aloha" spirit of love.

Journey of Love is the third of a Journey trilogy, the first to being musical massage by instrumental harp: Journey to the Ocean (recorded live on the beach) and Journey Into the Heart (pure harp in the studio).

Life is a Journey, a Journey of Love - may this music inspire more joy and meaning in yours.

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02

I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.

My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.

I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15

The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.

4 out of 5 stars Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13

Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!

5 out of 5 stars Better Every Time.......2007-05-09

This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07

I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-07-04

There isn't much I can say about this beautiful movie, except that it was so touching!
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.

Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

5 out of 5 stars Pays music a complement. I love the classical pieces!.......2007-05-27

I do not have the soundtrack to The Notebook, but I do have the movie itself. Having said that, every song is wonderful. Some music carries with it, a wealth of emotion and a sense of timelessness. I love all of the classical pieces , perhaps the best, in this particular movie. Classical has never been my speed when it comes down to music, but something about this movie's classical masterpieces struck a chord in me...made me smile and maybe even sniffle a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, I'm sure you would love its soundtrack too. Music like this is ideal for a romantic evening or just for pleasure listening. You don't know if you'll like something until you give it a chance! So give this a chance!!

5 out of 5 stars the Notebook soundtrack (Audio CD).......2007-05-13

This is a beautiful collection of music from the movie, The Notebook. Most is instrumental, very relaxing, as well as lively at times. Two renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You" are included.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2007-03-30

I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack, but I'm also a big fan of background music and this cd was great for both. Listening to the cd took me back to the movie and reminded me how much I enjoyed it, but I also put the cd on during a nice meal with friends and it worked out very well, they all enjoyed the music.

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping, emotional standout!.......2007-01-11

The music from The Notebook brings you right back to the film, capturing your heart and soul. It's music will roll live waves through your soul and bring you from nostalgia to your own feelings of love and desire. The selections, arrangements and orchestrations are to be admired, and Mr. Zigman is to be praised. This soundtrack truly completes the legacy of "The Notebook".

Album Description

Get the music of Narnia from C.S. Lewis beloved books, "The Chronicals of Narnia". "The Roar of Love" will take you on a musical journey to Narnia, sung by the award-winning group, the 2nd Chapter of Acts.

This extraordinary world - Narnia - is a magical land situated somewhere between the lampost and Cair Paravel on the western sea. But don't try to find it on a map, for it won't be there. Which isn't to say that Narnia is a figment of one's imagination. Oh no, it's much more than that. it's a place you'll more likely to find in your heart, as you embrace its wonders with your spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Very Creative Project Artistically, But Not The Best Of 2nd Chapter.......2007-03-30

I am one who thinks time is short, and when working on songs, I want ones that stand on their own and have a clear message. The songs on this project are connected to the C. S. Lewis classic, "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe." With the exception of "I've Heard The Stars Sing Before", none of these songs are ones I would consider doing as a special number at church.

Musically, this is a very effective album, with Michael Omartian adding his keyboard prowess and Phil Keaggy on the guitars.

5 out of 5 stars Notice how many 5 star reviews there are? :).......2006-07-25

I cried when I saw all the 5 star reviews and read them. I'm 53 yrs. old and Annie Herring (clearly most responsible for the 2nd Chapter's sound) and her sister and brother are my favorite group of all time. I've cried and worshiped with their music more times than I can count and love them like they're my family ... but hey, they are! :).

Different albums have been my favorites at different times and their music really communicates genuine love for Jesus.

I wish everyone knew and loved their music and their (our) Lord.

BTW, these guys were together for 17 yrs. and haven't recorded together for longer than that. It was sad to hear them announce that the Lord told them to dissolve the group. It was probably at the height of their popularity.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-06-23

The words and music are excellent, and very touching. I feel the CD enhances the Narnia experience. I loved it as a little girl, and my children love it now. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars With Footnotes.......2006-03-11

After Second Chapter of Acts released this album on record, the Episcopal Radio/ TV Foundation gained control of all things C.S. Lewis and the many tributes to the Narnian Chronicles, including the play of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe had to get official sanction. However this got relicensed, it's better than ever now remastered on CD.

The great writing and soaring vocals of Second Chapter were introduced on the cleverly titled With Footnotes album, which related the songs to their name and the New Testament book of Acts, and on the follow-up album, In the Volume of the Book (another witty play on words). Songs like "The Devil's Lost Again" were too rockin' for radio, and Matthew Ward, the male third of the trio, later released his own solo albums.

Second Chapter is also featured on the DVD/ CD set First Love, and as with many other Jesus Movement-era rock edged artists, it's about time they made a comeback. The new Disney/ Walden Media Narnia movie is only the latest creative work inspired by the Chronicles, as this album shows. Turn it up and hear the roar.

5 out of 5 stars The Roar of Love: A Musical Journey Into the Wonder of C.S. Lewis' Narnia.......2006-03-01

I enjoyed this album immensely when it first came out in the 80's. Now after seeing the movie in the theatre, I purchased it again as I found it has been remastered and put on CD. I LOVE IT. THE SONGS ARE PHENOM! Service from Amazon was great too! Thanks. It was worth every penny. Linda

5 out of 5 stars All Good.......2004-12-09

Not one bad cut. The great thing about this album is you can take each of the musicians singly and explore what they are doing. Listen to Jeff Beck...not on "Hello Jeff" (actually DO listen to that too!) but on "Journey to Love". His haunting solo fits perfectly with the mood of the song...and gives it the Beck Edge. George Duke glides throughout. David Sanctious (sp?) is a monster...not just on keyboard but guitar as well. From Stanley's original "Stanley Clarke" through this album and then to "School Days" this three album era was Stanley stepping out and rippin it up.

5 out of 5 stars Stanley's In Top Form Here, Even With The Cheese.......2004-11-11

JTL is Stanley's 3rd solo effort and shows much growth and ambition, not to mention diversity.

"Silly Putty" - Stanley and George Duke kick out the funk with TONS of melody and good vibes. Great horn charts that would do Tower of Power proud, plus, I used to LOVE playing this tune on bass myself to warm up with. Great fun.

"Journey to Love" - The one real weak track that could've been a gem if the dippy L Ron Hubbard lyrics and vocals were eliminated altogether, would've beena cool instrumental though not groundbreaking by any means

"Hello Jeff" - Stanley rocks out w/ Jeff Beck and the creative sparks fly! A fun fiercely rocking piece, great to play when driving especially! Beck just tears it up with his searing bluesy melodicism!

"Song to John Pts I & II" - Stanley, John McLaughlin and Chick Corea create a beautiful tapestry of heartfelt music that honors Coltrane and yet doesn't clone or copy him. Indescribably expressive and beautiful!

"Concerto for Jazz-Rock Orchestra" - The album's piece de resistance'. The ethereal intro was a bit over-long but once past that, when Stanley comes in with that piccolo bass, you're off on a wild ride like no other! Complex rhtyhms fly from drummer Steve Gadd, there's death-defying brass passages (I LOVE the brass arrangements on here!), Stanley underpinning the whole thing and David Sancious, who normally plays keyboards lays into some ferocious, smoking post-Hendrix guitar. Great stuff that builds to an apocalyptic end!

Despite the gaffe with the title cut, this is GREAT STUFF from a magical time when fusion was genuinely creative.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Stanley Clarke record.......2002-11-06

Alright, so the title track and Concerto for Rock/Jazz Orchestra can get a little cheesy. So what? Give the man a little credit for being ambitious. This album ranges from funk to rock to jazz to soul to orchestral jazz. The youthful energy and spirit throughout just makes you want to smile. Besides, the opening track is hilarious and funky at the same time. Song for John is by turns contemplative and spellbinding. Hello Jeff is a great vehicle for Jeff Beck. Oh, and by the way, Stanley's playing is fantastic on the whole album. It would be churlish to complain about a lack of maturity here and there. I think the guy was maybe twenty when he made this album.

2 out of 5 stars not very relaxing.......2007-07-17

I was surprised to hear how fast many of the tracks are- not very relaxing in a massage environment.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful music!!!.......2006-11-06

This is one of the nicest musical CD's I've ever played for my massage clients! Some of the songs are a little faster than I normally like to play, but all in all, this is some great music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful relaxing music.......2006-08-31

I bought this cd for my husband who is a massage therapist. It's one of his favorites. Clients enjoy it also. It has a variety of styles that are wonderful variations for guitar.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you like acoustical guitar.......2006-08-03

I enjoy this one for relaxation to acoustical guitar. Not quite as relaxing or long as a CD I bought specifically for massage background music.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds to Soothe and Uplift Your Soul.......2004-04-06

The magical music on this CD will touch the very core of your soul. Brenne's fingers dance over the strings, creating sounds that could only be created by a master guitarist. The songs are beautiful pieces of work; truly inspiring. I use this CD as an accompaniment to my work commute, background music for dinner parties (both group dinners and private dinners for two ;-), and as part of my meditation.

I look forward to more offerings from this artist. Give yourself the gift of this music. You'll be happy you did.

Disney management has often been accused of sacrificing the long-term quality of its animated features for the short-term pay-off of direct-to-video sequels to its middling modern successes. But as this soundtrack-sequel to the studio's 1998 quasi-feminist Chinese folk-tale proves, the music of such ventures can often compare favorably with that of the original. This new collection's buoyant "(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls" is offered up in two versions: A more traditional stage musical take and an antic cover by Atomic Kitten that's pure teeny-bopping Disney Channel fodder. That's Harvey Fierstein lending his gravelly pipes to the equally spry redux of "A Girl Worth Fighting For," while the decidedly more angelic pipes of Kiwi teen soprano phenom Hayley Westenra grace the elegant "Here Beside Me" by Joel McNeely and Kate Light. Selections from McNeely's deft, emotionally understated orchestral score flesh out the collection. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Alright...........2005-11-30

The music in this sequal is nothing compared to the first movie, but the tunes are catchy, and for a child that just enjoyed the movie, I could see how this would be a CD they'd want to hear over and over. It could get a bit annoying to their parents however. I would suggest seeing the movie before purchasing this soundtrack, for the songs are out of order from the movie, and it's always better to have a visual of what's going on before listening to the music alone.
I wasn't impressed, but I did enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Terrible movie, but good soundtrack!.......2005-11-03

As a Chinese, I think this movie was terrible, because it made the tale of Mulan very confuse and strange. I don't want to see this movie again. But I bought this soundtrack, because the music was very good. Being fond of Lea Salonga's voice was one of the reasons.
The first song in this movie was "Lesson Number One", and it was my favourite. I love the choirs of children, it was perfect! It made me recognize the children's choirs in the church. Lea Salonga's voice was so sweet, and it's my favourite style! "A girl worth fighting for" came up in this soundtrak but it was remixed, and most of the lyrics were changed. Although it was very different from the original one, I love it. Because it gave me a good feeling, and I felt that it was more humorous than the original one. Another song named "Like other girls" is one of my favourites. Mei's voice was a little strange but very cute. The three princesses seemed to be crazy, but I could feel their emotion that they were eager of freedom and very unsetisfied with the arranged marrige. I felt very happy that they found their love and happiness by the end.
This was a movie which was so terrible but with perfect songs I have ever seen!

5 out of 5 stars good cd.......2005-07-14

i saw the mulan II and loved the music in it, so i went out and bought the cd. here are my comments on each song-

1. lesson number one- 5/5. cute song
2. main title (score)- 5/5. i thought this was so pretty!
3. like other girls- 5/5. i absolutely love this song! it has a great beat, and just makes you want to sing along.
4. girl worth fighting for (redux)- 5/5. i love this song too, its funny
5. here beside me- 5/5. the first time i listened to it, i thought it was "ok", but now i think its great!
6. (i wanna be) like other girls (atomic kitten)- 5/5. i thought it was a great version of the original.

the next five songs, which are scores, are also very good!

overall, this cd was well worth my money, and the movie was even better!

2 out of 5 stars Eh.......2005-07-04

The 'other girls' song is cute, but this reminds me of the follows up to pocahontas and cinderella and the little mermaid. Aladin's did well enough to make more, but...I think it really does have to do with the music. Mulan had that strong "reflection" by christina aguilera when she was first coming out, that established her as THE best voice, and that song, in spanish or english works well on it's own also. These sequals keep failing to have a strong song. The strengths here lie with the new score, new themes. It's easier to create a better classical piece for Disney it seems. And they have so many talented singers at their disposal...

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite soundtracks!.......2005-06-23

How wonderful! It's my favourite soundtrack. And the song named "Lesson Number One" is my favourite! Mulan's voice is great, and the children's voices are lovely too! I'll buy this album immediately!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Cover.......2007-06-06

This same album has had at least 2 identical incarnations except for the cover art. So if you have bought some of his Wagner orchestral suites before, beware and be aware! You just may be making a redundant purchase. This version has by far the best cover artwork.

I have several of Wagner's Orchestral suites lps (Szell, Stokowski, Klemperer, Ormandy, Karajan) They all sound just peachy, so do not ask me to choose based on the music. I like the Stokowski best merely because it is on the great sounding Phase 4 label plus it has art work similar to this Szell cd and it has substantial liner notes. But as far as the music goes, a pair of Klemperers/Szells will just about beat any hand.

If you are new to Wagner, this is a wonderful intro. Then you can rent some of his music drama operas thru Netflix and take advantage of the best thing since sliced bread, English subtitles.

If you are looking for the Wagner symphony section at Amazon, there aint any! These orchestral suites are as close as you will get. Look instead to his disciples, Bruckner for symphonies and Richard Strauss for symphonic poems.

5 out of 5 stars Szell's Magical And Terrific Wagner Album.......2007-05-21

This was Cleveland's most prominent condutor, the late George Szell's only Wagner album. True, he was at home conducting the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Dvorak and all the brand-name, top classical music, but he was, at the same time, a gifted interpreter of Wagner. While Szell's name is not mentioned in the same sentence as Herbert Von Karajan nor was he a conductor of opera, this album showcases the skill and artistry he achieved while conducting the score to Wagner's most important operas - The Ring of the Nibelungen and Tristan and Isolde. The Cleveland Orchestra is at the height of its powers and the music you will hear on this album overflows with passion, dignity, grandeur and beauty, all the elements that Wagner's larger-than-life operas are made of. The first track is the Entrance Of The Gods Into Valhalla, the final scene in Das Rhinegold, the first of the four Ring operas. Pity this album does not begin with the beautifully mysterious and spiritual Rhinegold Overture, which would have been more appropriate, as the music segues into the Entrance of the Gods. But even as it is, it's wonderful. The music describes the vainglorious Odin, his wife Freya and the other Norse gods ascending into the glittering golden palace of Valhalla, pride and downfall of the gods. The music is bombastic and grand, just like one hears it at the opera, a melage of trumpets and brass. But the music is also composed of melancholy strings (violins) describing the lament of the Rhinemaidens, bemoaning the loss of the Ring and foreshadowing the coming tragedy. Track 2: Ride Of The Valkyries: This famous war march has been heard in films (such as Apocalypse Now) and occurs toward the end of "Die Walkure". It's a militaristic, noisy, ebullient battle cry. In the opera, Brunhilde, Odin's immortal daughter, has rebelled against him and takes to the air on winged horses with her fellow Valkyries. This interpretation is quite different than others you'll hear because Szell discovered an additional bit of music that Wagner intended to be played but for the most part is not heard. If you're quick, you'll catch it. It's a repetition of the battle cry "Hojo-to-ho" on the trumpet, occuring toward the last portion of the piece. 3: Magic Fire Music: This "magical" music, mostly for strings, serves as the score to the final scene in "Die Walkure" in which Odin has cast a sleeping spell on Brunhilde and puts her in the middle of a ring of fire, where she will await the kiss of the hero Siegfried. The tristesse of the piece represents a father's grief for the loss of his most belove daughter. Track 4 and 5 Forest Murmurs and Siegfried's Journey: This music is taken from various moments in the opera "Siegfried" which relates the hero's adventures. He awakens the sleeping Brunhilde who has become mortal, slays the fearsome dragon Fafnir and wields as magical sword. The Forest Murmurs takes place in the immense forest where Brunhilde lies sleeping. Endowed with the gift of communicatin with nature, a bird tells Siegfried where he can find Brunhilde. If one does not overanalyze the music, merely strings and flutes, one can clearly feel the word-painting and characterization in the piece. The flute is the bird or birds and the forest itself, the more powerful chords represent Siegfried and the brief "Valkyrie" motif stands for Brunhilde. In "Rhine Journey" we hear the strings become the flowing river and we can see Siegfried journeying to a dangerous adventure, one which costs the hero's life. In "Siegfried's Funeral March" Siegfried has been betrayed and is slain by the Giants. The funeral music is dark, primal and powerful in its depiction of nobility and downfall. As it ends, we hear Brunhilde's love theme which then appropriately takes us to the Immolation Scene. Brunhilde, distraught over the death of her beloved, summons her horse and leaps over Siegfrie'ds burning funeral pyre, a grand act of love and sacrifice, the first hint of humanity and compassion in otherwise dark drama filled with greedy and wicked characters. This leads to Valhalla's demise by fire and water and the world ends. Only the Rhinemaidens remain, taking back the ring which had long been stolen from them. Though these are only portions of music from the supremely lengthy score, it is enough to entice the listener to seeing the Ring, the biggest feast of opera one can ever undertake. The Overture to Tristan and Isolde summarizes the work itself. It's a high romantic tragedy concerning the knight Tristan, the King he serves and Isolde the Queen, whom he falls in love with. Their love is doomed but the magic and transient bliss is perfectly captured in the luminescent Overture, which begins softly and mysteriously with the "Tristan Chord" and culminates with a ravishing rush of strings. The Liebestod, the Love Death, is Isolde's swan song, as she dies of love for the fallen knight. Szell does not play this too fast or too slow. It's done right, and it's heartbreaking, ethereal and magnificent, perhaps even at the level of Karajan's famous interpretations of it. The final track is the grand overture to Die Mastersanger Von Nuremberg, a lengthy paean to Mediveal chivalry, all grandeur and pomp.

Five Stars Well Deserved. Make this your first intro to Wagner. The music will seduce you into watching Wagner operas. Dreamy, romantic, grand, sad, larger than life, Szell has captured the essence of Wagner in a single album. Buy it now. It's cheap and affordable. It's highly recommended. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Wagner!.......2006-10-07

This is certainly very good music-making, falling just a little short in the colors department - for which the Berlin under Karajan or the Philadelphia under Ormandy are the ticket. But that aside it's difficult to accept all this Szell bashing. People still listen to the Cleveland recording of the Dvorak Slavonic Dances and will for years to come. And unless you have to have original instruments it's tough to beat Szell and the Cleveland orchestra's brio and attention to detail in Mozart and Haydn.
Of course some of this carping may be the result of a little bit too much self-esteem and not enough appreciation for just what it takes to lead an orchestra at such a level. I remember in college I happened to be at a small gathering of literary people including a few novelists and poets and one critic, the august Edmund Wilson. Not knowing any better I walked right up to a stern-looking older man looking every bit the serious 'Dean of American Critics' and blurted out how much fun I had reading his story "The Man who Shot Snapping Turtles." Apparently this gushing adolescent accolade softened him a bit, and he talked with me for a couple of minutes. The last question I asked him was what did he consider the most important thing in writing criticism. Mr. Wilson blurted out bluntly, "Get it right!"
Over the years I have always thought there was a world of truth in that rather journalistic maxim. The reviews here are a perfect example. One could write and gush about this and that, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter how many names you drop, or airs you put on, if you cannot recognize quality you're no better than the crook in Gatsby whose idea of a small town where one could safely pass counterfeit bonds over the counter was Detroit.
In the Great Gatsby the crook passing false currency for real is picked up by the police. Unfortunately Amazon readers are easily mislead by glowing praise or, in the case of some of the reviews of the Wagner here, cold dislike. People react to harsh words, and especially when they are well written and sound based on experience. Let me assure you - no one is always right, and there are some people who, for whatever reason, have skewered taste.
The Szell Cleveland Wagner CD here is a series of showpieces, played very very well by the Cleveland orchestra. What sets this apart from many Wagner collections is the astonishing orchestra playing. Szell's orchestra, supreme in Dvorak, brings to Wagner's music a clarity rarely achieved by other orchestras. Superbly balanced, the virtousity of the players is on full display. It's a joy to actually hear all the myriad instrumental sounds in Wagner's score - Wagner played in tune, what a shocking concept. And particularly Wagner devoid of bathos! Tovey used to cite Wagner as perhaps the best of all orchestrators; here we have the Cleveland at the pinnacle of their glory days, a wonderful momento. Writing nasty dismissive words about performances of this caliber says more about the reviewers than it does about the recording.
This has been remastered for SACD and if you have a machine that will play SACDs then that is the one to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Szell has not fallen!.......2006-01-14

I quote from a previous review: "Perhaps no eminent conductor has fallen so far after his death as George Szell". To this comment, I say "Baloney". One great thing about Amazon is their sale of deleted CDs by independent sellers. When George Szell/Cleveland Orchestra CDs suddenly disappear, their price by the independent sellers skyrockets. As for the present CD, I have bought it on LP, cassette and CD and cherished it for years. The playing is sensational, the performances have plenty of passion and the sound is great. The Die Meistersinger and Tristan excerpts were recorded earlier than the Ring and have a little more spontanaiety but the Ring excerpts are also outstanding.

2 out of 5 stars Precise, clinical performances in dated sound.......2005-10-29

Perhaps no eminent conductor has fallen so far after his death as George Szell. He was treated with enormous respect during his long tenure with the Cleveland Orchestra, and he couldn't appear in Carnegie Hall without getting raves from the New York critics (his reviews were much better than Bernstein's). On the evidence of this cold, unfeeling CD of Wagner excerpts, mostly from the Ring, one wonders why. Every excerpt is treated to the same strict, unyielding approach; there is no rubato or romanticism. In addition the sound is thin and full of hiss (Szell's LPs on Epic were infamous for their bad sound, and Sony hasn't bothered to improve things on their digitual reissue.)

I will remember Szell fondly from my formative years in the Sixties, but he has become a dead letter in the intervening decades.

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!
