Diamond Fist Werny
Editorial Reviews
Label Comments
"The sounds range from smooth crisp vocals to droning bass lines, cut up with sharp-edged drum rhythms and filtered through challenging guitar riffs, all bundled together in an amazing package that takes you far away." - Barry Roark, The Stranger "...a mix of dark, moody elements of post-punk rock, primal textures, and Eastern flavoring." - Phil West, The Seattle Times
"One of the very few bands around who actually deserve the tag 'alternative.'... In a subculture overflowing with BS and attitude and too often short on true musical inspiration it's great to hear the unself-conscious and fluid assurance with which this band incorporates its influences: elements of Beach Boys-style surf, Sun Studio rockabilly, world beat, sixties psychedelia and even Northwest grunge are merged into an organic and ecstatic whole." - MAF, Snipehunt
"They are too slow to be called World Beat, too upbeat to be called new age, too nineties to be called acid music,... too different to be alternative and too intriguing to be called rock." - Gail Jeanne McCracken, Urban Spelunker
"The band issues a refreshingly positive vibe, leading the audience (most of the time) to swaying, quasi-ecstatic dance." - Sixth Form
"They start with ethereal, Indian vibes with hooky and quirky sparing acoustic guitar rhythms, then trip into this blurry and falling groove sucking you in as your eyes close to the words' 'water.' Suddenly, as if being hooked in without knowing it, churning aggressive guitars work to accommodate your swaying motions." - Laura Horton, Pandemonium!
"The closest you can come to dancing under hypnosis." - University of Washington Daily
About the Artist
The Secret History of DIAMOND FIST WERNY What has become the innovative, mood-melting sound of DIAMOND FIST WERNY began with the 23-year-old Todd Werny, an enthusiastic if not formally-trained guitarist and singer of Korean, Filipino and German ancestry. Werny arrived in Seattle in 1989 from the University of Delaware where he'd been in and out of a few short-lived bands. He wanted something unusual in his next band, something that would break the boundaries between musical genres.

Finally something unique!.......1999-09-02
Ever since the first time I heared "Plato's Cave" I have been in love with this music. There is nothing else on the music scene quite like DFW. From start to finish Enchanted Parkway is a great CD- it is the perfect follow up to the first. DFW also puts on a great live show. If you have the chance to see them, don't pass it up!!
Love it! Diamond Fist is unique, mystical, and rhythmic!.......1999-03-07
Diamond Fist has a unique sound that is mystical and rhythmic. My favorite song on Enchanted Parkway is Fountian Head. It's so nice to have some truly interesting music that is both creative and different! Finally!
Great follow-up from one of Seattle's Best.......1999-01-29
Enchanted Parkway is the second album from this amazing Seattle band. Though hard to capture what they do so well in the live sense, this 6 track CD does pretty well. "Golden" stands out heads above the other tracks, but "Plato's cave" ranks pretty high up there too. I didn't care much for their cover of the B52's "Planet Claire" but others might. If you ever get the chance to see DFW live, do not miss them!

A favorite Seattle memory..........1999-11-28
I'm no music critic, but I have reviewed bands for college papers. Diamond Fist is a righteous band. I was fortunate enough to help them set up for a gig @ the Sub Pop Shop in the Pike Place Market last spring where I witnessed the gravitational pull of a succulent sound. I'm kind of in a plush phase now, and the tribal sounds I heard that day were right in stride. I was howling (plush-like, mind you) to some Indian drumming music on Thanksgiving Day driving through the sleepy hollow below Blue Mound in THE SHIRE(just west of Madison, WI) as the morning frost gave way to brilliant, breathless sunshine of an everlasting Indian Summer... That is Diamond Fist Wearny to me.
more to come from these great artists.......1998-05-31
Check out the new release from Diamond Fist Werny titled "Enchanted Parkway." Their new album incorporates their mystical style with electronica. This creative blend is well worth a listen.
Thick Rock.......1998-05-15
Guitar, reeds, drums, and voice, run through ungodly COMPUTERS! Rave sensibilities in a more-or-less rock format is the result. The opening track, "Mercury," is a high-energy call to prayer, "Stethoscope" is a dirge for a fallen angel, and each other track explores equally transcendent themes.
The music is a very dense, dark, yet catchy body/machine noise that is the warp to Todd Werny's vocal weave. Definitely unique and worth a listen.

Transcendent.......2001-12-07
DFW combine trance, drones, metal, and college philosophy to create an unforgettable and unique sound. Todd Werny's vocals range from pop-boy to gothadelic and usually find their way to the listeners' ears only after a few rounds in the synthesizer. The music is varied, especially on this album of mostly remixed and live tracks, but tends to run classic rawk through the ringer of 90s multicultural techno. "Snowfallingthrusmoke" is one of their most powerful songs, a visceral smackdown that questions nativity and the power of place. After such a strong opening, the rest of the album feels a little shaky, but it's still overall a stunningly wonderful find. Dancing, driving, or staring out the window into grayness, "Long View to the Sky" is there for you.
Not really a full-length album.......2000-12-10
Diamond Fist Werny has never been rushed about writing new songs. Their oeuvre encompasses (to the best of my knowledge) two 5-song cassettes, a 45" single, and two 7-song CDs. And now this, which is really another similarly-sized release with remixes filling out the extra space. Nonetheless, it is worth the price of admission. The remixes, I feel, mostly serve to bring Diamond Fist Werny closer to the mainstream, which doesn't really do them justice. (On the other hand, neither do they do violence to the spirits of the originals.) But the rest of the album is classic Diamond Fist Werny.
Heck, get it for "Goddess" alone, still my favorite song of theirs.
