Unlimited Edition [Limited Edition] [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Japanese Pressing. This album features a number of songs that are mere snippets, like the vaguely tribal-sounding 'Blue Bag', while one tune, the 20-minute 'Cutaway', from 1969, is a sprawling pastiche of oddities. Five cuts are listed as part of the band's continuing Ethnological Forgery Series, on which they recreate or interpret a variety of world musics through their own vision. The majority of songs come from 1968-1971. This 19 track re-issue of the 1976 original release has been remastered and comes packaged in a paper sleeve. Vine. 2005.

Collection Eclectic Plugged-in.......2006-05-25
I sing an album eclectic, even for Can, comprised of 19 tracks recorded 1968 - 75. These tracks encompass a huge variety of styles, and showcase the range of musical experimentation that made the group such trailblazing innovators. Unlimited isn't one of the greatest Can albums, but still gets five stars for its breadth and depth.
Five of the songs are part of their brilliant Ethnological Forgery Series (numbers 7, 8, 10, 27 and 36). The EFS provide some interesting insights into the methods and madness of the group; by studying the ethnic musical styles of many cultures and mastering their performance, Can broadened their musical base to global proportions many years before World Beat became part of the Western musical repertoire. I'm not sure exactly which styles are being forged sometimes, but here is what they sound like to me:
EFS No. 7: An Afro-asiatic rhythm such as might be heard on the shores of the Red Sea, in the seaports of Yemen or Eritrea.
EFS No. 8: A peaceful xylophone ala Tatras.
EFS No. 10: Could be a whirling dervish dance from Turkey or Egypt.
EFS No. 27: Reminiscent of Japanese shakuhachi music, with a psychedelic chaser.
EFS No. 36: Sweet Dixieland jazz, with a funky cornet ala 20's New Orleans. This music would fit right in a Bourbon St. bordello, and Louis Armstrong himself would want some this jam.
The EFS tunes on this album are all too brief, two minutes or less in length, but provide a delightful glimpse of how Karoli and Liebezeit mined the resources of traditional ethnic music to enrich the sounds of Can.
Other notable tunes include the hilarious "Mother Upduff", which tells the story of a German family that travels to Italy on vacation, where Grandma Upduff suffers an unfortunate accident. She meets her demise in the tentacular clutches of a gigantic octopus in a Roman fish market; having no money at all, they decide to wrap her up in their tent and drive her back to Dusseldorf. Stopping for a cup of coffee just before crossing the border, they emerge to find their car has been stolen along with all their luggage - an epic theme still heard as urban legend today, where even now dead American grandmothers are stolen in Mexico.
One track ("Cutaway", March 69) is 18:49 of avante gard excess, showing another source of the unique Can sound: the atonal experiments that succeeded European classical music in the early 20th century.
"Ibis" (Sept. 74) is 9:14 of beautifully symphonic tripfunk, "I'm Too Leise" (March 72) 5:10 of enigmatic ethereality. Gorgeous both of them.
None of the songs on this album achieve the heights of genius reached by Can's greatest nonhits, but together they create a delightful mosaic and an invaluable window into the creative matrix of Can's genius - five stars for variety, range, and daring creativity.

2 Unlimited with a fresh sound!.......2006-02-15
This album is great! I bought it online from a russian site not expecting much. I've always been a great fan of 2 Unlimited but hearing other groups that have "trance remixes" and listening to it and finding out it isn't trance at all well... that's what I was expecting with this one. I was wrong! Most of this album is very hard, complex, melodic, and uplifting trance! And as a trance DJ, I will assure other DJs that lots of these are in their extended, unmixed forms. Especially the good ones. There are a few edits, but you aren't missing anything because they aren't the best ones (actually The Real Thing... I wish that was extended), lol.
The best track on here by far is the remix of Tribal Dance. I thought the Revil O remix was good that appeared on the rereleased single, but this kicks the hell out of it! If you've ever heard Alphazone or Neo & Farina, it is very much in that style. My second favorite remix on here is Let the Beat Control Your Body. This is like Tribal Dance in greatness =) The ones I was disappointed with were Get Ready For This (which is low-key and has really nothing from the original... didn't even recognize it) and The Magic Friend (I think it's just because the high pitches hurt the hell out of my ears). But I guarantee you'll love all the other tracks if you love trance.

Can - 'Unlimited Edition' (Mute).......2006-01-30
A good Can compilation that was originally put out in 1976,with pretty much most,if not all previously released material.Total of nineteen cuts and a duration of 73:33.Was first available as a low-priced double-lp,now it's all been remastered onto one CD.For fans that are fairly to very familiar with Can's repertoire. Some of the tunes I was decently impressed with were "Gommorha",the tribal "Blue Bag","Ethnological Forgery Series,No.27","TV Spot" and the jammin' "The Empress And The Ukraine King".Good collection of a highly influential German progressive/kraut band.Long live Can!
bacon sandwich.......2003-12-04
this is a most remarkable album. very very funny--for me one of the main criteria in judging a record. So much variety--but tongue always planted most firmly in cheek. These blokes are hilarious. Listen to this album first thing in the morning with a bacon sandwich (plenty of HP sauce on) and a steaming mug of strong tea. I did and have not been the same since.
Mostly for Committed Fans.......2001-05-05
This is Can's scraps. Their scraps are not better than other people's best efforts. Most of the music here is dispensible.
Even at a reduced price (the original 2-LP set sold cheaply, and here it's on a single CD) it's no great shakes. I listen to it and shake my head. The full-length "Doko E" (never legitimately released) goes on well over the length of an LP side and gathers momemntum brilliantly. Here, it's reduced to an abstract snippet. Why?
Can fans will want the tracks cut with Malcolm Mooney that are on here, though. "Connection" and "Fall of Another Year" are brilliant, and "The Empress and the Ukraine King" is pretty good.
Not For Everyone.......2000-05-11
Most of this is leftovers that did'nt make it onto the regular releases. There are some gems but mostly it will only appeal to the most devout fan. Better off picking up "Monster Movie", "Delay--1968" etc.
Unlimited pleasure.......1999-05-06
Buying this record, you can delight with three different phases of this fantastic band: Malcolm Mooney Era (incredible black american vocalist), Damo Suzuki (fantastic japanese vocalist) and Quartet Era (no vocalists, but pretty cool too). If you want go into the carreer of this group, check out "Monster Movie" and "Tago Mago", the two best albuns by theirselves.
