Jennifer Kelly, splendid e-zine
"(Woodard) combines thoughtful, unexpected guitar playing, intellectually twisted yet painfully honest lyrics and heartfelt singing."

About the Artist
For longer than he’d care to admit, Joe Woodard has been exercising creative impulses in assorted projects, including Headless Household, flapping, Flapping, Lean-To, Dudley, Ballroom, and others. Of late, he has been a co-songwriter, guitarist, and handyman on new albums by Julie Christensen, Shelly Rudolph, and Ellen Turner. He has been centrally involved in the mom and pop label, Household Ink, since 1987. "between" is the first release under his own name.

Album Description
i n ten days, during June of 1993, Joe Woodard, in a burst of energy, angst, boredom, whatever, penned a heap of songs in a Holiday Inn in Toronto. In March of 2002, he finally released the album between, after slowly pecking away at it over the years, in various studios around Santa Barbara, CA. The songs are alternately, brooding, sweet, goofy, reflective, and other adjectives that will come to mind at a later date.

For lack of a more suitable term, Woodard calls this music "faux folk," tongue only half in cheek: the foundation is the folk tradition, but the end result slithers into other idiomatic neighborhoods, including C&W ("Sweet Pain"), jazz ("Otherwise") and kinda-blues ("News Flash (Toronto Blues Society)")--also heard on Headless Household’s 1995 album ITEMS, with Jennifer Terran singing—and rock ("The Having Known," the first appearance of the group later known as flapping, Flapping). Lyrically, the songs run from shameless wordplay to personal ruminations on the meaning of life to the first in a series of tributes to infomercial gurus ("Anthony Robbins").

He was aided, immeasurably, by a cast of guest musicians and muse-kissed engineers, including Robinson Eikenberry, Ellen Turner, Glen Philips, Bruce Winter, Tom Lackner, Chris Symer, Bill Flores, Allegra Heidelinde, Sally Barr, Gabe Lackner, Dick Dunlap, Tom Buckner, and Nate Birkey.

At the height of their 2004 "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" fame, Big & Rich's one lament was that radio didn't know what to do with them, even though they sold two million copies of their debut album, Horse of a Different Color. Their follow-up, 2005's Comin' to Your City, likewise failed to score a Top 10 single, but still went platinum. Now comes their third album, and their first single, "Lost in This Moment"--an overtly emotional ballad about getting hitched--is selling like Gatorade at a chili cook-off. Are Music City's most likeable lunatics playing it safe? Well, it sounds that way. And if that's a disappointment, given their initial rollicking (and much needed) assault on staid Nashville, there's more bad news. Big Kenny's loopy songs of peace, love, and hippified unity (especially the overblown "Eternity," featuring John Legend) now sound so familiar, replete with Pentecostal blathering ("Brothers and sisters..."), you can sing along the first time you hear them. The duo sequences the album like a vinyl disc of old, with a virtual A-side (ballads) and B-side (rockers). Not surprising, the B-side wins, even if "Radio" owes too much to the self-aggrandizing hullabaloo of Comin' to Your City and Wyclef Jean drops by to rap a few country clichés. It takes an awfully long time for this album to be fun, but it eventually does, with an AC/DC cover ("You Shook Me All Night Long") and a Brooks & Dunnish turbo-tonker ("Loud"). Fans of Big & Rich already understand that they take their spirituality as seriously as their sinning. But next time, here's hoping they spend more time in Saturday night, and less in Sunday morning. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

On their third album, Big & Rich bust down the doors of country music with new sounds, new energy and new audiences. The title Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace describes not only this collection but also Big & Rich themselves. Thank heaven for Big & Rich!

This is a good cd. Music is what you would expect from big & rich.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Previous Records by Artist.......2007-07-23

This cd was Ok but not as good as Big & Riches previous 2 cd's. The hard driving country they are known for was minimal on this record and that really disappointed me. I am used to loving every sone on their cd' san dI only liked about 3 on this cd. They can do much better.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best work.......2007-07-20

I didn't really like this CD. But I liked it better than the last one they put out. I think they've moved away from their initial sound too much that was in their 1st CD. These songs just aren't as powerful or moving.

5 out of 5 stars Non-stop Great Music.......2007-07-20

I really enjoy the CD. There isn't one song that I skip over. The songs have great meaning and purpose. Definitly a must have in your CD collection.

Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace

This is a killer CD with lots of emotion and true straight-from-the-heart songs. It shows a side of Big and Rich that was not present before.

For a man who gets his biggest kicks surfing the waves and strumming his guitar on a lonely beach in native Hawaii, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson has carved out quite a remarkable career on the mainland. His 2003 album, On and On, debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and subsequently went platinum on the back of hit single "The Horizon Has Been Defeated." The follow-up, meanwhile, seems destined to shine even brighter. The drifting chords and soft voice are still in place, only now Johnson's instinct for melody has sharpened alongside his ability to self-edit. These small concessions make third album, In Between Dreams, his most conspicuous, particularly on tracks like the three-minute relationship drama, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing," and "Breakdown," a song he originally recorded for Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People album remade here to reveal its full stripped-down loveliness. Imagine all the coconuts it will buy. -- Aidin Vaziri

1 out of 5 stars he should be more bored with himself.......2007-07-16

Typically, an artist seeks to broaden their talent and explore new horizons. With Jack Johnson, he's satisfied to produce the same songs over and over and over and over. If you'd like to hear all the same catchy riffs ad nauseum, buy all of Jack Johnson's albums. Or just buy one, since they're all the same.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-06-12

I have to say, I own Brushfire Fairytales and On and On, also, but this album is my favorite so far. I love the flow of the songs, love the songs he wrote as well as the ones written by his friends, and love the delivery. "Banana Pancakes" is just about my favorite JJ track of all. I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds like a Friday night feels.......2007-05-27

I absolutely love this album. Jack and boys sound sooooo good. Like I said above, it sounds like a Friday night feels...just plain good and mellow and happy. Beautifully simple melodies and refrains, just not so simple that they aren't fabulous. Jack's voice is just so smooth and lovely. The vocals are right up front and sound so clear. I love the guitar riffs on this album. In Between Dreams is like grown-up lullabies. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this album. My fave tracks are Breakdown, Never Know, Better Together, Sitting Waiting Wishing, Do You Remember, Constellations...see how much I love this album? Can't even choose a fave.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and Peaceful.......2007-05-07

This CD is one of my favorite CD's ever! Every time I here the song 'Better Together' I cry. The first time I heard this song I was driving in the car with my brother and he played it for me in his first car for the first time. It was a special moment for me and I'll never forget that moment in my life. My favorite song would have to be 'Never Know' because I heard it sitting on a fairy-boat ride coming home from CIMI with my class of friends and I was sitting next to my boyfriend listening to that wonderful song. It lulled me to sleep and let my mind rest and be at ease. I will also never forget how much it helped me forget all present things and just let me have some 'me time' as I fell asleep. I know I am being redundant but trust me, it was wonderful. I would highly recommend this CD to you. Also Jack Johnson's voice is relxing and very unique. I have nobody to compare him to. If you end up buying this CD then I hope you enjoy this as much as I did and am.

The Stones began their transitional period, from reinvigorating R&B standards (on their early albums) to reinventing rock & roll (on the brilliant four-album streak beginning with Beggars Banquet), on this underrated 1967 collection. Even the songs that didn't become smash hits, such as the speed demon "Miss Amanda Jones" and the honky-tonking "She Smiled Sweetly," are more than curiosities despite experimental touches with organ, sitar, and kazoo. Mick Jagger proves, on the psychedelic "Yesterday's Papers" and "Ruby Tuesday," that he can sing a sexy ballad even if he's incapable of crooning. Of course, the opening piano-driven rocker "Let's Spend the Night Together" sounds as fresh and sexual as it ever did. --Steve Knopper

4 out of 5 stars Great Early Work, Surprising Sounds.......2007-07-16

This CD captures a very early sound.

Cool, Calm and Collected has a rich sweet but powerful melody to it

Something Happened to Me Yesterday is a unique piece too.

On the whole it's a unique sounding CD of The Rolling Stones that I recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing Pop From An Often Harder Group.......2007-07-04

This is a scrappy, on-the-go album from Jan '67 that feels like some other band's, the Kinks, say, and fits writer Philip Norman's description of it as "a vaudeville show echoing in a nearly empty hall." But just because that vaudeville was to play to a greater acclaim six months later on Sgt. Pepper's doesn't make parts of it any less valid.
You get the two-sided timelessness of "Let's Spend The Night"/"Ruby Tuesday," plus "She Smiled Sweetly" (rediscovered in the movie "The Royal Tennenbaums") that gently glides along Keith's organ work, and "Cool, Calm, Collected," (Brian sitar work should be voted most original ever!) the music hall ambience of which, along with the similar closer "Something Happened To Me Yesterday," probably percolated in the Beatles' heads as they worked that winter in Abbey Road. There's also "Who's Been Sleeping Here" with its Dylanish beauty, and the infectious "Connection" (Stones outBeatle the Beatles!), which predicts the drug inspections that would harass them unceasingly.
"My Obsession" sucks, "Yesterday's Papers" just okay, and "Amanda Jones" is a Chuck Berry vamp taking a nauseating turn, but the rest is well worth owning. They would never sound so convincingly pop again...

3 out of 5 stars Get the UK version.......2006-08-21

Please, do yourself a favor and get the U.K. release of _Between the Buttons_ rather than the U.S. release. The U.K. album is well-balanced and has two tracks that you must hear -- especially "Backstreet Girl," which is now one of my favorite Stones songs. Sure, "Ruby Tuesday" and "Let's Spend the Night Together" are great songs; they just don't fit on the album very well. My advice: buy the U.K. version from Amazon and download the two hits from iTu^es.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any better than this!.......2006-06-15

I don't care what anyone thinks, this is my all time favorite Rolling Stones. Everything about it is truly amazing. The songs are so diverse; they range from simple rockers like "Connection" and "My Obsession" to divine classics like "Let's Spend The Night Together" and "Ruby Tuesday". "Let's Spend The Night Together" is the best Stones song ever recorded. I love everything about it; from the drumming to the backing vocals. "Ruby Tuesday" also stands out as very heartfelt, especially with Brian Jones playing the recorder. "Yesterday's Papers" is another good one that really has that sixties sound to it. I especially like the guitar solo in it. "She Smiled Sweetly" is a lovely ballad and songs like these are very rare in the Stones catalog. I love "My Obsession" also; it's very simple as is "Connection", where Keith delivers some of his best back-up vocals. "Something Happened To Me Yesterday" ends the album sweetly; the song is light hearted and fun. I enjoy listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars The Stones Go a Little Psychedelic.......2006-06-13

You can tell right away by looking at photographer Gered Mankowitz's kind of blurry psychedelic photograph that this isn't going to be your ordinary Rolling Stones record. Well, I suppose there are no ordinary Stones' records, but this one is a bit different. The Beatles were doing "Revolver" around this time. Bob Dylan was doing "Blonde on Blonde," Donovan was going all Flower Power. Some of that stuff was rubbing off on Mick and the boys and it wasn't all bad, no sir, because "Between the Buttons" is sort of the result. This is just a bang up fun record to listen to "Ruby Tuesday," was a huge hit and is a wowza of a song. "Yesterday's Papers" is sort of a kiss off song, you know, a guy telling a girl she's yesterday's news. I remember reading somewhere that Mick was sort of telling a girl he was through with her by doing this song. I like every song on this record, both the US and the UK versions. The Stones really pour their heart out here. "Between the Buttons" is a must own record for any Stones fan, for any Rock and Roll aficionado as well.

Description

Tamia is one of the world's most loved R&B singers with a career highlighted by two certified gold albums, has arrived with her a new studio album and fourth release featuring a mixture of club tracks, duets and mainstream R&B songs produced by proven hitmakers Rodney Jerkins and Shep Crawford. Four time Grammy Nominee and Winner of the Best Vocal Performance Award, Tamia's long awaited follow-up to her hit record More finds the sultry, sophisticated singer at both a creative and personal apex. The 15-song disc, Between Friends, sizzles with her trademark sensuality, but it is also buoyed by a sparkling personality that her fans don't always get to see. Like her past efforts, the disc is anchored by stunning vocal displays that rival this generation's greatest voices. The album features the hit track "Can't Get Enough" which is one of the most highly anticipated songs from one of radio's favorite artists.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This album is excellent.......2007-07-06

Go on Tamia! This album is so good. I can drive to it, exercise to it, relax to it, and sleep to it! I am truly inspired by Tamia and have been a fan of hers since forever. She sings like a bird, her voice is beautiful! My favorite songs are ME (love the video & the message), ALMOST, PROTECT MY HEART, LAST FIRST KISS, SITTIN ON THE JOB, CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOU...I could go on and on. Excellent job Tamia, I can't wait to see what the next album will be like. I am your fan!

5 out of 5 stars Tamia is one of the most under rated female R&B singers.......2007-06-19

It was May when I heard a cut from Between Friends, 6 months after the CD was released. Tamia has on of the most distincitve voices on the scene and she is often slept on and gone unnoticed. She is a force to be reckoned with.

4 out of 5 stars Tamia is the truth.......2007-06-07

Tamia is a rare artist who is talented and can more than carry a note. Between friends has everything you could ever want in a cd. For example this album has the club banger (Too Grown For That), the slow jams (Can't Get Enough Of You & Last First Kiss) and a powerful track (Me). Tamia does a great job of bring the songs to life and she sounds great over any beat. This album will definitely stay in your rotation!!!

MY TOP FIVE

1. The Way I Love You
2. Can't Get Enough Of You
3. Almost
4. Happy
5. Become Us

5 out of 5 stars Hats off to a Job well done!.......2007-06-05

I became a big fan of Tamia's when I was in college with the second Cd A NU Day and since then that chic has been blowing me away. I heard the African release of Between Friends before it was released in the US and was blown away. She is one of the most under-rated singers in the industry. In a world of none singing little kids she provides a breath of fresh air. "Me" can easily rival "Stranger in my House". Become Us" and "To Grown for That" are crazy up-tempo tracks. I instantly gravitated to "Almost" the minute I heard it! I've never heard that concept before. Last First Kiss says it all again this introduced another concept in a world of tasteless unoriginal R&B. "Sitting on the Job" is another one of my favorites. I'm really happy she changed this into a full song.

If you don't have this in your collection then you are truly missing a gem. HATS OFF TO TAMIA!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-05-17

Mary Chapin Carpenter's first album of new material in three years has been hailed as a fine example of pop music for adults. This is both true and misleading. In changing producers (from John Jennings to celebrated piano man Matt Rollings), the literate singer-songwriter has slightly broadened her sophisticated Americana sound, and although it's less rhythmic as a whole, her acoustic-folkie approach remains at the core of her classic style. And while "Between Here and Gone"--which addresses the theme of travel and transition, the fragility of life, and the ephemeral nature of happiness--might be said to concern itself with grown-up issues, most of Carpenter's writing has always done just that. Yet this stunning album, informed both by her 2002 marriage ("Elysium," "River") and by the events of 9/11, is more introspective than much of her early work. The alto-voiced singer is compelling throughout, but never so much as on "My Heaven," inspired by Alice Sebold's novel, The Lovely Bones, or on "Grand Central Station," in which a New York City ironworker, standing on the bucket brigade at Ground Zero, hears the voices of the dead, desperate to find their way home. In moments such as these, Carpenter reestablishes herself not only as a world-class poet, but as an artist of the first order. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Carpenter at her best - finally!.......2007-03-19

If you are the MCC fan of songs such as "A Town" and "10,000 Miles", as I am, then welcome to Carpenter bliss! No rock-a-billy here, thankfully. Carpenter delivers a slew of music on "Between" for rainy, chilly and fog-filled nights. The mournful strings and piano are a perfect accompaniment for her soothing vocals. The opening track is as fast as this chanteuse is willing to go. From there on it's slow motion. She does pick up a bit again with "Beautiful Racket".

"Girls Like Me" is a chilling description of the power of simplicity and how we often overlook the no frills people in our lives for the more flashy. Carpenter seems to be saying she's done with "flash". Brava. Also wonderful are "Grand Central Station" and "The Shelter of Storms" - just Mary, an instrument or two and tons of soul. Simply wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Once again..........2007-03-10

Once again Mary Chapin Carpenter has amazed me with her beautiful words and music. She's an artist that is very much an individual.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD from Mary Chapin Carpenter.......2006-11-08

The CD "Between Here And Gone" is fantastic. Many wonderful songs and melodies.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2006-10-23

The latest (to date) offering from the cerebral country singer. This is not background music. Chapin's music reads like beautiful poetry and she deliver's it with a captivating voice.

4 out of 5 stars MCC Review.......2006-06-26

If you love the songwriting of Mary Chapin Carpenter you will love the CD. Love the song "in My Heaven". Some of her best work yet.
Vocal quality is as excellent as always. Listen to it over and over one of my favorite CD's.

When my wife and I first heard FIND YOUR WINGS, we were touched by the great lyrics and thought of our daughter. However, after hearing a few more songs, we became annoyed with his voice after a while. He doesn't seem to have much range and without the others from 4HIM blending in as they often did so well, you can easily get tired of his voice.

That isn't to put a damper on the quality of the lyrics and music, but I feel that the 4HIM guys will always sound better together than as soloists.

5 out of 5 stars Tune In To Christian Music.......2007-03-20

This artist was recommended to me by Jim Brickman. For someone who is looking for a nice, relaxing sound from songs with a Christian basis this is a great choice. I especially like "Find Your Wings" which is a song about raising children and hoping what you've wished for them as they grow up and become adults.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful CD - totally God inspired.......2007-02-12

Two songs on this CD really hit home for me. I was going to watch my son high jump at the league championship and heard, "Find Your Wings" on the radio and I cried and God spoke to me and told me he was going to give him wings that day to win. Praise God, he blessed his life that day with a victory to encourage him! My father who was a true lover of the Lord passed away and when I heard the song, "Wish You Were Here," I knew that my Dad was enjoying Heaven and being with Jesus and I will be with him someday!

5 out of 5 stars From the heart-amid the storm.......2007-06-30

These songs are both for "regular" worship and for those times when the storms of life are raging. The song that never fails to touch me is "I Will Life My Eyes": worship of God when facing unclimbable mountains, raging storms, or inner pain too deep to share...

This isn't rose-colored-glasses faith. This is faith even when life is so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face.

Bebo Norman has created a much-needed album that breathes hope and peace, whether you are in a season of joy or a season of deep trial. His voice and stylings are perfect for an album such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Bebo Busts Out.......2007-06-18

I've been a Bebo fan since about 96 and have every album, including "The Fabric of Verse". This is his best since "Ten Thousand Days". It's different -- less acoustic -- than those early albums, but it represents the emergence into a new, more up-tempo, "rockier" sound that's proved elusive on the last three albums. In other words, what I feel he's been trying to do on "Try", "Myself When..." and "Big Blue Sky" he finally got it right here. The opening track sets a great tone, but that best ones to me are "Time Takes It's Toll" and "The Way We Mend". They are excellent songs that are as strong lyrically as they are musically. Catchy in a way that few of his songs since "Ten Thousand Days" have been. I highly recommend this album to any Bebo fan, and indeed any fan of good Christian pop music.

    5 out of 5 stars Feed a starving heart!.......2007-05-24

I have been a Bebo fan since 'back in the day' when he used to do warm-up for Caedmon's Call in smallish college venues. This CD is outstanding. I find the outcome of the threefold strand of his lyrics, his music and his expression to be a rare triumph. In a day where most of contemporary Christian music is embarassingly anemic, predictable and repetitious, this CD is fresh and like water in the desert. It brings my spirit to LIFE.Bebo has obviously been through personal brokenness and this CD sounds to me like he channeled said struggle as a precious musical offering for fellow struggling sojourners.(Hmmmm...the broken alabaster jar of exquisite perfume comes to mind..)

    4 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-05-14

This is the first time I listened to one of Bebo Norman's CD's--and I bought it for one song. So I have nothing to compare it with. I have njoyed this CD, but would probably not buy another.

    2 out of 5 stars Sorry, Bebo........2007-04-06

I own all of Bebo Norman's CDs, and I LOVE all of them, except for this one. I bought it and listened to it once, and I hated it. It does not sound like Bebo. This sounds like Steven Curtis Chapman or Michael W. Smith or any of the other mass produced Christian/pop music artists. On all of his previous albums, even though he changed his sound slightly, it was still generally very acoustic and Bebo-ish. This album sounds nothing like his previous music. I was disappointed.

After the self-released Somedays and Twentythree Places, Nashville's Matt Wertz signed up with a proper label for Everything in Between. On his third full-length, the Missouri-bred troubadour mixes pop, folk, and blues into an easygoing, yet ebullient sound. As he exults on "The Way I Feel," "Everything inside of me is singin' out." You can hear Dave Matthews, John Mayer, and if you listen really closely, even Michael Jackson, circa Off the Wall, in Wertz's soulful voice (see "Naturally" for proof). Not too surprisingly, Wertz claims all three as influences, along with James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, and Hall & Oates. Interestingly, he also cites the seriously un-cool Doobie Brothers and Toto, but the lack of pretension is refreshing. Aside from "The Way I Feel," the propulsive "Heartbreaker," which evokes the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love," is another catchy tune that deserves a lot of airplay. The other selections may be less memorable, but there are no real clunkers. Matt Wertz doesn't have the most original sound and he seems to be rather risk-averse at this point in his career, but the singer/songwriter has an appealing style. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-14

This is an amazing album. Matt Wertz comes through as always. Great quality product as well. My favorite songs include 5:19, Carolina, and I will not take my love away. It's an album anyone should own.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite.......2007-04-07

Ever since my roommate went to a Matt Wertz concert and made me listen to this CD, I've been hooked. Now I've seen him perform twice and I listen to these songs over and over all the time. My favorites are "5:19," - who hasn't been waiting for a phone call? - and "Carolina," but "The Way I Feel" and "Heartbreaker" are really fun, too, and... well... I love them all! Get this CD and give Matt a chance - and definitely catch one of his shows if he comes to town.

    5 out of 5 stars fabulous!.......2007-04-04

It is rare to listen to a new cd for the first time and immediately love every single song! Matt is as refreshing as they come. It's evident he puts his heart and soul into writing his music and we're treated to a beautifully honest performance in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Some Really Great Tunes.......2007-03-21

Matt has a great voice, and some real good tunes. I love Carolina and Heartbreaker. 5:19 is a song that everyone with half a heart will be able to identify with...good things to come from Matt!!!

ALO, or Animal Liberation Orchestra, sound like a bunch of hippies. These hippies are totally cool!

This is a surprisingly good CD. It's a re-release now on Jack Johnson's Brushfire label, so you know it's good. Jack even guests on the second track.

The music is very chill and laidback, but a little more uptempo than Jack Johnson. It has a little funky groove to it.

Although it does have some rather stupid lyrics at times, the music more than makes up for it. This is a really cool cd, perfect for hanging out. Recommended.
