Truth and Soul

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Truth & Soul is the most focused, most frenetic, and most political album in Fishbone's small but important catalog of ska/metal/funk/punk. They still party on this record (note "Bonin' in the Boneyard") but they also offer some serious doses of reality, and some fierce insight about growing up black in America. Much of the material (including "Slow Bus Movin'," "Ghetto Soundwave," and the potent, hopeful "One Day") was recorded on the 1988 birthdates of Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln. Madcap vocalist Angelo Moore is in good form on Truth, but guitarist Kendall Jones often threatens to steal the show, particularly on the amped-up cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead." --Michael Ruby --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie.......2007-06-10

I bought this CD specifically for the a couple slow songs that I absolutely love on this CD. The reason why I gave 3 stars instead of 5 is because I used to own this on cassette back in the day, and I guess I used to only listen to the side with slow jams on it, because when I got the CD I did not recognize the first several songs on this cd, and I also didn't necessarily care for any of them. Nevertheless, the slow songs that I do like on this CD (and I mean, I like them ALOT) makes the purchase worth it.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make em like they used to @}->---.......2006-03-19

This is the best kind of r 'n b. It's slow and sexy and romantic. Aaron Hall does a superb job here. I love When You Need Me, Let's Make Love and if you've ever seen the videos to these songs, they make them complete. He sings so soulfully and sensually and this is bedroom music at it's best. It's the 2nd cd of his I have and I want to get more. I love him and his voice and don't listen to the negative reviews - this is a fantastic album that you need to own. It's all, ALL good.

5 out of 5 stars I didin't purchase the cd for myself, but..........2006-02-26

The person I did purchase the cd for said that it was really good.

5 out of 5 stars Vocally this is who R.Kelly wishes he could be.......2006-01-25

Aaron Hall led Guy there first two albums with his Charlie Wislon esque vocals. Aaron was in top on the ballads Let's Chill, Goodbye Love, Piece Of My Love and Yearning For Your Love. Much to the dismay of myself and many fans, Mr.Hall was overshadowed by R.Kelly. Any avid music listener nows if you listen to his Born Into the 90's albums he sounds just like Aaron. Aaron is in top form on the ballads Let's Make Love, When You Need Me, Don't Be Afraid (Sex You Down Version) and the huge single I Miss You. For good quality R&B,check this album out.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated masterpiece.......2004-06-16

The truth is a New-Jack masterpiece too often underrated by many. The up-tempos are super-groovy and it was, for me, in this direction that R&B had to go. Sadly, for Aaron, the slower (and for me, boring to tears!) hip-hop soul of Sean "Puffy" Combs and R.Kelly were going to dominate the charts from 1994 until now.
I hope in a come-back of a more funky and up-tempos oriented R&B. Aaron Hall could be one of the major influencial singer for the future singers and producers...and by this way come back to light again.

I love you Aaron. You're the best R&B singer.

Truth Hurt's vocals have a frosty chill. The singer, a protégé of hitmaker Dr. Dre, lustily moans and wails about a lover who turns her pages on the sinewy Dre and DJ Quik collaboration "Addictive," but her edgy resolve and steely seductiveness undercut any notion of romance. This makes her inviting moment of passion more like a warning shot. That push and pull between distance and desire is present throughout most of this rugged effort. From the mournful lament "Bullshit" (produced by Organized Noize) to a seething, if somewhat pedantic, duet with R. Kelly ("The Truth") or the loose and limber tale of a lover in prison ("Jimmy"), Truth Hurts creates her R&B in a space where men and life never fail to disappoint. Luckily, that dejected and bitter outlook makes for an often-fierce CD. --Amy Linden

I can't speak for anyone elses' personal taste,but,I LOVED,this album!!From the,catchy "Indian"music on "Addictive"to the RARE,type of song that expounds'on the virtues'of a"real"man..("This Feeling")..In,this day and age where a group of goofy,(condom decorated)immature lil' girls'from the"Downy-Soft"are praised and,EMBRACED,for being "intelligent"enough,to label a man,who,just happens to be a passenger(seeing as,how only,ONE,person,can drive a vehicle at a given time)in his friends'car,a"Scrub"It was a real breath of fresh air,to hear,a mature,WOMAN,from the,"Wicked West"discuss,one by one,the traits'of a MAN..B/S really DOES' fall down like rain,and apparently,the radio stations'and,video shows'are the STORMCLOUDS,for supporting such GARBAGE!!! 4 out of 5 stars Why is everybody saying this is bad?.......2006-12-06

I really do not understand the reasoning behind everyone's terrible reviews for this album. I personally believe that this is a very strong release. Some of the production falls a little flat at times, but that is really the only flaw. She shows her vocal ability and power in every song and almost every song in relatable. She is not overly "ghetto," like many say. If the language bothers you, get the clean version. Simple as that. Despite what people think, I love this album and believe that it should be in every R&B lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars QUEEN OF THE GHETTO.......2006-02-24

I WISH SHE WAS STILL ON AFTERMATH,OR IS SHE?ANYWAY,NEVER MIND THAT..SHE CAN SING&HIT ALL THE NOTES.WITH SKILLFUL VOCALS,HOT LYRICS&PHAT PRODUCERS,WHAT MORE CAN I ASK FOR.THIS WAS ANOTHER ALBUM THAT WAS SLEPT ON.SHE'S GOT SOME SOUL IN HER,BUT WHATEVER HAPPENED,HAPPENED.ANYWAY THE TRUTH HURTS

4 out of 5 stars It's pretty good but can't stand the hype.......2005-08-03

I don't understand alot of ppl are criticizing or hating or have a distaste 4 this album. I'd been awaiting to get this 4 so long since it was released in '02. I was like 17 and 1/2 when this came rightafter my junior yr. in high school and still sounds good today. Prove to me, IMO Truth Hurts (whose real name is Shari Watson) is truly talented and a lil 'mo gangsta a bit I mean has extraordinary vocals and sure can singing which is a gift from God. Once I listen to it which I bought used @ CD Warehouse, I was a bit impressed and quite not worried nor dissappointed at all. I believe it's still nearly-Classic IMO just b/c it hasn't made 5 or 10 (or Superior) yet. Ok I actually luv the song "Addictive" true to be pretty good kinda reminds me "Uhhh Oohhhh..." by my girl Lumidee (whose my favorite singer) and surely the beats, the drum parts and 'urything to it incl. the rap thing by my man and all-time favorite Rakim. He sure is the illest rapper out there.

Other songs included I like are: Hollywood, Push Play, The Truth, to name a few. So this is not a bad album at all. I hope I keep this just to listen a lil' more or see it's real interesting. No hard feelings. This is sure is a must if u wanna try this girl out and the other thing checkout her latest release putout last yr. which trully titled TRUTHFULLY or maybe self-titled. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This Truth Hurts album got me so "Addicted!".......2005-02-05

I was intending on reviewing this album when it first came out, but it slipped my mind. But I am reviewing Truth's first album Truthuflly Speaking now, and here is what I thought about this album:

01. Push Play
This is sort of an introduction to the album. Truth says this is Truth, when it's real you got to face it. It's called the truth, I think I heard somebody say it this way. Then the beat changes and Dr. Dre introduces his new artist on Aftermath.
02. Addictive (Featuring Rakim)
What can I say about this song, we all know this was the first single fromt the album that introduced Truth to the world. The beat and production on the song is straight up off the hook. Produced by DJ Quick, and I must say he did his thang on this one.
03. Next To Me
This song is a plea from Truth to her man, saying that if ur not Next To Me, I need X-tasy. The beat on this track is very melodic. And it'll make u feel the vibe that this song is bringin'.
04. Jimmy
This songs is about playa who's been locked down by the name of Jimmy. On it she's tellin' a story. The verses are like a paragrah or chapter. Each one tellin' how much she misses her man.
05. Grown
The track is like a emancipation track of sorts, it's like your no longer a child or teenager, ur now grown. Dealin' with life day-2-day situations. Not being misunderstood, noone tellin' you what's wrong, right, bad or good. You should feel free to release it if that's the way you're fellin, ur Grown!.
06. This Feelin'.
My favorite track off the album. This song is mainly for the women. But anyone can get somethin' from this song. You can flip the words to cater 2 u. Also on this song Truth vocals are very strong, one thing I really like about this artist.
07. Tired
Truth is makin' conversation to one of her girlfriends. Tellin' her that she's been tested by people, stressed out, been through it all basically. Tired is a dramatic track. Like if u have family and friends who turned into enemies, baby that's hollerin' til' the quarter of 3 in the morning, and your mate that's flippin' out and stressin' you. And ur just Tired.
08. I'm Not Really Lookin' (Featuring DJ Quick)
This is one of those West Coast party tracks, a tight beat from DJ Quick. You can really throw somehtin' and put on this track and just grove to it.
09. B.S. (Featuirng Big Rube)
Now we all deal with B.S. @ one time or another. On this track she explain what all she's been through when she was caught up. But you should not believe everything you hear, let the truth be known. Also she says (b.s. pours down like rain, which is tru).
10. Queen Of The Ghetto (Featuring Kittie a.k.a. Cita)
What really stands out on this track is Cita's squeaky ghetto female voice. Cita also get's explict on this track. This song is kinda like a long interlude on the album. But I do like to beat 2 this song.
11. The Truth
R. Kelly is on this track, but on the album, they don't credit him on this song, they only say he's the prodcer, etc. Anywho, this was the second single off the album. I really like this track. U can't run away from the truth, or u can't hide it.
12. Real
Timbaland produced this track. Many people say this is the closest Timabalnd & Dr. Dre got to collaborating with each other. The beat on this song is tight. I also thought this song could have been a single.
13. Hollywood (Featuring Dr. Dre)
Dr. Dre explains how life is in hollywood. What's hilarious 2 me is when he talks about tight pants on guys, which is very uncomfortable lol. Truth follow up the rhymes by Dre. So all-n-all this is one hot tack.
14. Do Me
This is a song that I can really relate to. In life you have to Do You. Go out and get urs. You know how to please yourself, and this is how it gotta be, you got to do yourself and make urself happy!!!.

**The first album from Truth a.k.a. Truth Hurts was a tight album, I thought it would sell alot, but things happen. But that didn't mean people wasn't feelin' this album. I really believe U should go out and pick this one up. U won't be disappointed when u buy it and listen 2 it.**

"You better step aside, I'm a woman on a mission," declares the daughter of the late blues guitar great Johnny Copeland, as she kicks off her fourth album in typically feisty form. Aided by a stellar cast of rootsy pros led by producer/guitarist Steve Cropper and including Chuck Leavell on piano, Felix Cavaliere on organ, ex-Zappa drummer Chester Thompson, and saxman Jim Horn, Shemekia delivers the soul, funk, and swamp-rock goods. Disappointed with the lack of gutsy music on the radio ("Who Stole My Radio?"), she aims to rectify that situation with a dozen slabs of tough, tight, barnstorming R&B that she energizes with her sassy attitude and grits-'n-gravy voice.

Meshing the sweat of Memphis with the pleading, deep-fried sizzle of Muscle Shoals in its prime, the songs on The Soul Truth shift from bluesy, testifying ballads ("Strong Enough") to horn-infused steamy funkers ("Better Not Touch") to late-night gospel ballads (Dobie Gray swings in to duet on "Used") with the effortless, down-home intensity of Otis Redding. You won't find her on MTV or in the top 40, but for those who reject the plastic, Pro Tools-sculpted pop and slick cookie-cutter music that dominates the airwaves, Shemekia Copeland speaks the "soul truth." --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

Her new CD, aptly titled, The Soul Truth, is the funkiest, deepest, and most exciting statement yet from the woman CNN calls, "a legend in the making." Produced by renowned Stax guitarist Steve Cropper (who also adds his stellar guitar playing to the CD), the album is steeped in the spirit of classic Memphis soul but, at the same time, is a contemporary and up-to-the-minute slice of life. Featuring Shemekia's powerful, emotional vocals over a blistering band with horns punching in all the right places, The Soul Truth is a tour-de-force of rock, soul and blues. From the funk and fervor of "Breakin' Out" to the timely question of "Who Stole My Radio?" to the rock-powered "Givin' Up You," The Soul Truth tells it like it is, with deep emotion, forceful beats and music that is satisfying, original and memorable.

Throughout The Soul Truth, Shemekia Copeland testifies her music to both seasoned music lovers, who appreciate her musical roots, as well as to new fans, who love her contemporary attitude.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love that girl!.......2007-05-07

Shemekia IS the reigning queen of the Blues! She remains unparalleled since her debut album. I love Everything she does!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2007-02-24

This is my first Shemekia CD and I am already looking for another one.

5 out of 5 stars ALMOST (but not quite) as good as seeing her live.......2007-02-18

Okay, NOTHING beats seeing Shemekia live actually, but this is, so far, the best disc she's done (IMHO). Soulful and catchy (many are permanently lodged in my head) this disc really delivers. The lyrics can be facile, but Shemekia's singing more than makes up for any minor flaws. Every disc has gotten better and better, so I can't wait to see what she'll do next.
(Seriously, see her live if you have the chance--you will never regret it!)

SHEMEKIA COPELAND
The Soul Truth
Alligator ALCD 4905

At 26, Harlem, New York's Shemekia Copeland has already had a lifetime worth of awards. By the time she was 16, she had joined her father, Johnny Clyde Copeland, on his tours. Since her unforgettable debut in 1998, she has received accolades everywhere. Her fourth release was fashioned by Steve Cropper, legendary Stax guitarist/songwriter/producer. He contributes the same three skills for Copeland and the result is magnificent. Together, they have selected the most robust songs of her career. How could you go wrong with songs written by the likes of Cropper, Gary Nicholson, Fred James, Tom Hambridge, and Eddie Hinton? There are no screeching guitar solos, just good time music played by an adept band with Memphis grooves, stirring lyrics, and those explosive vocals.

A hefty guitar grabs you and pulls you into the upbeat lead off number "Breakin' Out", which is exemplified by blasting horns. A combination of funk, soul, and rock `n' roll is heard on "Who Stole My Radio?", but not on FM airwaves these days. The lyrics describe why most of us turned off the radio years ago. Ironically and quite purposely, the melody is extremely radio friendly. "All About You" is regarding being in love with yourself as detailed in lyrics like ("You could almost break your own heart / If you could / you'd hold your own hand / I can tell we're all through coz I can never love you half as much as you do"). Here, Chuck Leavell's vibrant keys tingle your backbone. "Better Not Touch" reveals it's OK if the eyes stray, but a powerful warning is given to keep the hands at bay. The danceable "Givin' Up You" gives up the funk, while old time soul music is given resurgence during "Poor, Poor Excuse". Baring her soul, via vocal expression, is a remarkable talent that Copeland possesses. Miraculously, her vocals can sound sweet, mean, tender, and tough - all at the same time. Superior vocal performances appear on two spine-shivering songs, which are both worthy of being Song Of The Year. She begs and pleads, for a bittersweet predicament to end, on the emotionally exhausting "Strong Enough". Hollywood is going to come knocking for the ballad "Used", which contains a beautiful duet with Dobie Gray. Here, Copeland's affectionate voice acts as the conscience of a generation.

Yes, the horns do add polish, but some gnarling exists in the vocals and guitars. As implied by the disc's title, don't expect to hear a lot of blues. On The Soul Truth, Copeland crosses the line and transforms into a distinguished icon.

--- Tim Holek

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing followup.......2006-02-09

Shemekia Copeland suffered from some uneven songwriting and ameteurish production in her early CDs, which were rectified in her breakout CD "Talking to Strangers". However, she overshot that optimal point with "The Soul Truth", which comes across mostly as a big band-driven ego trip; examples include "Better Not Touch" and "Givin' Up You". "Who Stole My Radio"'s theme of bland radio was covered much better by Tom Petty earlier. "Uptown Line" is a weird pseudo-rap tune. The horns and backgroud vocals are a little too much. Some of the tracks are good, including her duet with Dobie Gray ("Used") and the last track, the acoustic "Something Heavy". No question the woman can sing, and producer Steve Cropper also plays a mean guitar, but this album will disappoint blues and Shemekia Copeland fans. She needs to get back to her roots lest she become just another diva.

Playwright Tony Kushner adapted his sprawling meditation on the AIDS epidemic of the 80's into an equally epic, Mike Nichols-directed HBO miniseries. But while Thomas Newman's score spans that dramatic landscape with rich stylistic diversity, the young champion of the daunting Newman family musical tradition (his father was Fox legend Alfred; his brother fellow film scorer David; his cousin songwriter/composer Randy) never lets musical bombast get in the way of compelling emotional introspection. Anchored by a delicate wind and string-driven main theme that's as mature as it is bittersweet, Newman proceeds to explore some of the same adventurous, rhythmically restless soundscapes that characterized his work on Erin Brockovich and American Beauty. But that typically moody experimentalism is leavened elsewhere by moments of neo-baroque choral exultation, smokey 30's jazz (courtesy of George Lewis and his Ragtime Band and Duke Ellington) and even flashes of gospel and orchestral post-modernism, all of it served up with a masterful sense of irony-free restraint that's become one of the composer's most refreshing hallmarks. It's easily one of Newman's -- and 2003's -- most accomplished and satisfying film scores. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Some of his best work.......2007-06-12

Most of us know Thomas Newman for his work on his more famous films like American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, Scent of a Woman and Meet Joe Black, but this soundtrack to the HBO film is right up there with his best pieces of work. The whole album goes through various feelings, shades and emotions, the best tracks for me being Mauve Antarctica and Tropopause. If you're a Thomas Newman fan then you need this in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-01

There are not enough stars on the selection for me to say how good this CD is! It is so beautiful and like classical music. I listen to it all the time!

5 out of 5 stars The Celestial Xpression of Thomas Newman.......2005-08-31

...well, to only write a review is not enough to describe the impressive sound in this record. it is necessary to listen to it. Thomas do not scrimp in efforts to assemble this wonderful musical work. in fact, each one of the melodys, agreed, and instruments (mainly those of wind and strings) even are perfectly connected and performed in litle some more of 70 minutes of music. Transitions from the quietness of a melody to the loudest human chorus, may be hear is this soundtrack (tipically from the original Serie, that I have too in DVD). But everything is not perfect. Must be had included the Henry Mancini song: "Moon River" contained in one of the most sentimental scenes in the film/serie (that i think at least). In a plus, if you are an lover of this kind of productions, it does not have to lack in its collection the "Angels in America Soundtrack". Buy and enjoy it..!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing work.......2004-11-28

After working in film scoring for the past decade, Thomas Newman has finally achieved his masterwork with the soundtrack to "Angels in America." It is a culmination of the different techniques and themes he has worked on in the past, along with a completely new orchestral sound that perfectly underlies the depth and scope of the film. It is a very rare score in that it conveys all the happiness, pain, pessimism and hope that Kushner's work is all about, simply through the nuanced way Newman has written and arranged it. It is an incredibly entertaining score that stands well on its own. A must for any fans of Newman or the film.

Madcap vocalist Angelo Moore is in good form on Truth, but guitarist Kendall Jones often threatens to steal the show, particularly on the amped-up cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead." --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Influential and rocking at the same time.......2007-07-20

Influence means nothing really, even though it's a cool factor. But for Fishbone, but that's a good thing, because the funk and ska inspired styles incoroparted into the rock layed a blueprint for all the funk inspired rap bands, including RATM (sort of), but mostly The Red Hot Chili Peppers and of course, 311 (There's plenty more, but those stand out to me). The band formed in 1979, but only played their style of music (which was always ska and funk mixed in with rock) at live shows. IN reality, they were one of the first bands to do this, so a lot of bands like Sublime, No Doubt, and more, have a link to Fishbone. More of the masses got a hold of fishbone later in the 80's, so it's little knowledge, and I am not even sure. IT's hard to know, but nevertheless, Fishbone influenced all kinds of bands. (Their first offical album was released in 1985), Both playing and style; P-nut (311) and Trever Dunn (Mr. Bungle) both say JOhn Norwood Fisher has influenced them, P-Nut in particular looks up to him.

______ that, but the music is great anyway. Truth and Soul may be considered an alternative band, but their sound is way diverse than nerdvana. Here's a quick rundown

Freddie's Dead-Not to funky, but's it got some of it. Remake of the Curtis Mayfield song from the 70's.
Ma and Pa-song about divorce. THis one is most definitly influenced by funk/ska.
Question Of Life-A funky song, it's got plenty of trumpets.
Pouring Rain-more of a slower ballad, one of the weakest on the album
Deep Inside-more of a punk song
Might Long Way-mostly a funky hard rock song.
Bonin' In The Boneyard-Cool party song!!!!!!!!! BOYEEEEEE!!!!!!!! (HAHAHA No) It's got plenty of funk in it, and the notable parts are the horns and the bass solos in the middle, just a couple of cheesy yeah-yeah-yeah's (*shudder*).
One Day-Not sure how to describe this song.
Subliminal Fascination-another punk song
Slow Bus Movin'-Some person called it cowpunk, though I am not sure. Whatever it is, it has some country in it.
Ghetto Soundwave-Sort of like Question Of Life, just not AS good.
Change-And acoustic song, but with Fishbone you never know. IT's got a lot of soul in it, and shows that Angelo Moore is pretty versatile (unlike Anthony from the RHCP)

This was definitly very impressive, this band has diversity in them, especially Angelo Moore's crazy as _____ divserve style of vocals. Reccomend to anybody who likes alternative rock.

5 out of 5 stars Why oh why!.......2007-04-29

Hey I like the Red Hot Chilis as much as anyone else but this band were just as good if not better than them so why are they not up there with them or even at least get 5 minutes of fame like No Doubt? I read on black punks website one of there members did suggest a reason and hey, it doesnt take a genius to work out (It was only realy Living Colour back in the day who made it big)

Have to say though while latter day Red Hot Chilis have their own style and play it well back a few years and they were just plain average, before Mothers Milk this band blew them away. Fishbone knew how to mix funk, ska, punk and just about everything else and make is come out sounding sweet. Even gave us the added bonus of lyrics that actually meant something (unlike early Chilis)

You realy need to buy this one, check out 24/7 Spyz as well.

5 out of 5 stars FULL ON!.......2007-04-23

This is the mega nut of supreme positive potency, it'll take you a Mighty Long Way from where you started out from in your day-to-day! Energetic and uplifting and crazy. Also soulful and serious. If you like this then try the Chili Peppers' first few albums, and Fishbone's first release, the self-titled E.P. TAKE ME AWAY, SPECIAL K!

5 out of 5 stars best album by an underappreciated band.......2007-01-18

is fishbone the great undiscovered band of the 1980s/early 90s?

this band is so good on so many fronts that it's criminal they are not a household name. this album, in my view, is their best. they should be revered with the likes of the replacements, the red hot chili peppers and husker du.

few bands have so successfully mixed intelligence, raw punk-funk energy, great musicianship and soul, without ever being pretentious. i saw them live several times and those shows stand out as among the most raw & powerful I ever saw, as good as red hot chilis (but clothed).

how do you categorize this band? Ska? Funk? Soul? Protest music? Punk? Who cares! It's all there in this disc from the brilliant cover of "Freddie's Dead" to the punk of "subliminal fascism" to the hilarity of "bonin' in the boneyard" to positive protest power of "change."

4 out of 5 stars Funk it up Fishbone!.......2006-09-12

Some may not agree, but I call this easily their best album. It should have made them huge. "Truth And Soul" is a wonderful mesh of funk/ska/rock/punk, and usually gets me jumping around the living room. Great lyrics too. Few songs have the energy that "Ma And Pa", "Bonin' In The Boneyard", and "One Day" do. This album is also a must for fans of the old movie "Tapeheads", as this includes "Slow Bus Movin' (Howard Beach Party)" which the soundtrack missed. But it's not all horn-blowing and bass-slapping. "Change" is a beautiful song played on acoustic guitar, that's about making the world a better place for all. Any fan of older Chili Peppers or Bosstones needs to hear this.

5 out of 5 stars two sides..........2007-05-13

Since there's two sides to every story, don't instantly believe everything you read or hear. Those who do want to support Frank directly can buy his own, inferior version of this. The Expansion issue of this excellent record IS the best one, musically and sonically. And whatever the real story may be, please be glad that these recordings, Franks very best he ever made, have been rescued from the Mojazz/Motown vaults. Without the efforts of Expansion they might have been unreleased forever...This is classic soul music, beautifully sung and near perfectly produced and arranged by the great Steve 'The Scotsman' Harvey. He's actually also the guy that partly paid for making the record...

**PLEASE READ**

There is a bootleg of Frank's music called "The Truth 2" being released on the Internet WITHOUT the permission of Frank McComb.

**Frank McComb IS NOT affiliated with the release of "The Truth 2"
This is very unfortunate for Frank as he is in no way profiting from the blood sweat and tears that he has put into this music and by supporting this album, you are not supporting Frank McComb but rather someone who is trying to profit from the works of Frank McComb

4 out of 5 stars Warm and soulful........2006-12-09

I imagine everyone will already be aware of, and probably have a copy if they're willing to admit it, of Frank's legendary "Motown sessions", whether it be the bootleg CDR or the recent Frank McComb CDR release.
I had heard these sets and liked them, but was very sad at the quality - these were, after all rough demos. All that raced through my mind was "what the hell is wrong with Motown?!" (no prizes for any answers - there are far too many and none of us have the time! :-)
Steve Harvey back in the summer of 2004 indicated that he was busy reworking these famed Motown sessions. Well, the man has done a great job and the sound quality is second to none.
There are all the tracks that we are already familiar with (minus "Shine" and "The Milk Of Human Kindness"), as well as some different songs recorded prior to the essential "Truth Vol. 1" album.
Every track is beautiful, and none comes more essential than "More Than Friends". When I first heard this song it brought a lump to the throat.Rarely does a record do that to me. This is seven and a half minutes of serious soul heaven. The warm keys, the hushed atmosphere and sympathetic accompaniment from Steve Harvey, Doc Powell, Paulinho Da Costa, the Nashville String Machine, Ron Huff and Sekou Bunch make this a killer track. The album is essential for this alone.
"Golden Lady" is a beautiful cover of Stevie Wonder's classic and has already gained a welcome release, but it is probably the four unreleased gems that you will be champing at the bit for! "Do You Remember" is a quirky, funky and very pleasing uptempo effort in the vein of Impromp2's "Give It Up". Steve Harvey's style is drenched through and through and his symbiosis with Frank is absolute magic. Freddie Washington is also a legend and does his thing like he only can.
"Labelled As Love" is a beautiful track featuring Bobby Watson on bass. Comparisons with Donny Hathaway are more than justified when you hear this sort of track. If for some crazy reason you doubt whether you will buy this set because you already have 2 versions of this set then prepare to reconsider. You cannot and should not overlook this album. The warmth that this particular song emanates is overwhelming. We really are hearing the masters at work here. The sincerity, tenderness and embracing nature of "Left Alone" is unquestionable. The instrumental, "Mr. Integrity", features a jazzier vibe and hats off to all concerned for it - especially saxophonist Louis Van Taylor who sure knows how to blow. Frank's keys remind me of Ramsey Lewis' 70s Columbia efforts and for me adds to the appeal and charm of the whole album.

3 out of 5 stars Beware.......2007-06-25

The reviewer that stated that these songs are remastered IS correct - contrary to the many people saying otherwise. Smiling Faces, while decent enough, has been redone. The end result is that it's too orchestrated and overly "smooth". It has lost a lot of it's original bite.

5 out of 5 stars The Undisputed Champions Of Psychedelic Soul.......2007-02-01

I'm gonna give this five even though I don't own the cd. I do however own all the albums on vinyl, and its criminal that the only cd releases are 2 best ofs and "face to face with the truth". Motown or Hip-O selct need to remaster the first 6 albums and release them on CD, (their last two were released on Whitfields on record label)But until then, do yourselves a real real favour and try and hunt down these vinyls, because these compilations don't do the group any real justice. You need the whole truth and nothing but the whole truth. Maybe we need to start a poll and nudge these record execs to "do the right thing"

Other notable "truth" songs not on cd include (imho) "California soul", "If i die" "sunshine" "i saw you when you met her", "our day will come", "i'm losing you", "ma" and "misunderstood"

4 out of 5 stars This Undisputed Truth cd ain't the whole truth!.......2006-12-08

The Undisputed Truth, or "Underrated Truth" as I sometimes call them, are generally remembered today as the "Smiling Faces" group, but producer Norman Whitfield really took them to fascinating musical heights in the years following that everlasting hit. You need to buy a turntable, and hunt down their old albums to completely understand the Truth.

Unfortunately, you can't buy records on Amazon, and turntables aren't exactly the most practical means of home audio. So, just go ahead and buy this album, even if you own all the records. Just so you can hear "Lil' Red Ridin' Hood" remastered in your thumpin' car stereo, with the windows rolled down, while you're cruisin' through the ghetto!

"Law of the Land" is a pulsing, rythmical, complex soul/funk work-out. It has grooving chops, and dynamic vocal and string arrangement. Sorry to say, I don't know the stand-out female singer's name, but this lady can belt it like the best Motown vocalists. She makes you wanna gasp for air whenever you hear her.

"UFOs" is a pristine example of the group at their pulsing, psychedelic funk rock best. Great lyrics, trippy sounds fx, goofy vocals. Very interesting stuff.

"Lil' Red Ridin' Hood" is almost the penultimate black rock song. This one, I think, is up their with some of Funkadelic's most grungy opuses. The premise for the song is genius: a young, pretty, rich girl in a red dress walks through the ghetto and gets harrassed by a funny-cigarette smokin' brother. Instrumentally, the song is simplistic, and frankly have a thrashy, head-banging feel. Vocally, the lyrics of the verses aren't melodic, and are "exclaimed" more than sung, giving the song a unique and threatening feel. I dig it as one of my favorite '70s recordings.

"Help Yourself" is a great song, but I'd much rather have the version from the Higher than High LP than this one.

"Poontang" a fun, raucous funk romp. It's a self-referential song where the singer talks about dreaming of becoming a star since childhood, how he recorded "Smiling Faces" (or "a hit record" as it's referred to), how it sold sold a million ten days after it was first released, "and that sounds alright to me!", he says. Consequently, he gets a lot of Poontang. Good, bouncing, joyous funk with great horn arrangements...naturally.

Well the Truth of the matter is, this's just a sample of the what the band was all about. But until they finally release their whole original albums on CD, this is the best you'll have to do. Please Universal, please give us the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth, in the form of a BOX SET. Now that would be NASTAY.....

just an idea

5 out of 5 stars Just an info.......2006-04-20

at oberon "from motown": "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for The Undisputed Truth. The Single was released in the spring of 1972. This is almost forgotten, because later in 72 Norman Whitfield revised the song for The Temptations and created the grammy-winning funk symphonie.

4 out of 5 stars If it weren't for Smiling Faces .......2005-06-17

This actually is rather good stuff. There's Gospel and Funk, and Disco, and some Psychedelia on this slab of cd. I do hate thier lone hit though, and that was the "Smiling Faces". I hate it for many reasons; for starters it's a turn off to me the way that they sing about people only pretending to be your friend. Well after all they are the Undisputed Truth, but it still hurts, and so does the harmonica. You see I hold out for the faith that there are people out there who love you for who you are, and not what you can do for them. I feel my favorite here is thier song "Higher Than High". It's got some real grooves there, and it's sounding rather psychedelic. The rest are good too, but I just wanted to finally vent on "Smiling Faces". For those who have been hurt by people, and want to turn your back on them just remember this "A who wants many friends must be a friend himself..., but there's a friend who sticks closer than a brother." Proverbs 18:24.

4 out of 5 stars Good Music..... With Iintelligent Mature Song Writing.......2007-07-02

One or two song are a bit off but the album as a whole is very good and true to life...with songs like Cheatin man, no one I know of has a song like that. Other good tracks are Yes...Spittin'Game...Hartstrings....50/50 love...Cold Turkey and Part of My Life, are all good songs.
(This is the kind of maturity in song writing that you should get from people like R. Kelly at his age and 15 year music career.)
If you like this album check out...Raul Midon's State Of Mind...A little different but very good.

5 out of 5 stars Truer words never sung before..........2007-03-28

If you are trying to decide between this and the new Anthony David, I'd go with 3 Chords and Da TRUTH!!!! This one is a more balanced and fresher representation of Mr. David. Track 2-->"Heartstrings", "Yes", "Believe Me" and "Cheatin' Man" are samples of the GREAT LYRICAL MATURITY on this album. I just listened to The Red Clay Chronicles and some of the same songs from 3 Chords get re-done (not necessarily better). Red Clay also does one too many shout out songs to Atlanta and I'm ATL to the bone--born, raised, and to the grave. On 3 Chords, the ATL/GA pride is just enough to make a person nostalgic but not too much where I'd have get out mapquest if I wasn't from "The A." If you're on a budget and want some straight up soul food for ya ears, THREE CHORDS & THE TRUTH won't run up ya' presha or mess with ya' suga as the old folks say...

4 out of 5 stars Solid Debut!.......2007-02-09

I had the pleasure of seeing Anthony David open for India.Arie when she came here last month. And even though I had heard of the name, I hadn't heard his music. So I was truly interested in what this guy had to offer. Well, little did I know that I'd be captivated from the very first song. Song after song, I found myself enjoying every note that he played on his 6-string guitar and every lyric that he spoke. As he sat on the stool under the spotlight, I couldn't help but wonder why I had never heard his music before. Well, I actually had heard his work...unbeknownst to me. He worked on India.Arie's first album and co-wrote her latest single "There's Hope." So I really had to get my hands on his two cds. Although he has a new album called The Red Clay Chronicles, I found myself drawn to his more acoustic debut album 3 Chords & The Truth.

Although not the strongest singer out there, his creativity and songwriting make up for his limited singing range. "Yes" starts off the album, instantly submerging you into his emotional magnificence. His heartfelt lyrics continue on "Heartstrings," again drawing the listener into a familiar story about wondering if somebody is worth the risk of loving wholeheartedly. The live performance of "Spittin' Game" is a brazen song about what else...spitting game! The standout track "Cold Turkey" had everybody entertained at the concert because of the wickedly funny yet sometimes factual occurrence of not being able to stop loving someone at the drop of a dime. "50/50 Love" is a decent reggae-tinged ditty, while "GA Peach" talks about the lovely ladies of Anthony David's home state. "Believe Me" is a cool, self-assured melody on trusting someone to love you the right way.

"Ain't Enough For Me" discusses the feeling of wanting to spend more time with that special someone, while "Cheatin' Man" speaks on making the mistake of stepping out on your woman even though you know it's the wrong thing to do. "Skyline" is a simple, subdued tale about dedicating yourself to another person. "Part Of My Life" is his renditon of the India.Arie song he co-wrote for her first album Acoustic Soul. He closes the album with the hilarious "Krooked Kop" and the the tranquil "The Water/The Fire." Do yourself a favor and pick up 3 Chords & The Truth. And if you like what you hear, there's always more with The Red Clay Chronicles.[....]

I initially heard Spittin Game and Cold Turkey on XM radio. However they discontinued the station, so it was months until I heard it again. When I finally found out who the artist was I had to get the cd. This cd was everything I expected. This guy has a rich and soulful sound. I like several tracks, of course Spittin Game and Cold Turkey, but Cheatin Man is so heartfelt. You really can visualize the story that's getting told. Believe Me, Water/Fire-the flute is on point, GA Peach, and Crooked Cop are great also. I also liked Can You Be A Part of My Life. I actually heard India.Aire's version first, but they're both nice! As you can see I really liked this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Composite Truth (1973).......2005-03-04

Recorded in the winter of 1972, and released in 1973, Mandrill's Composite Truth is such a mixture of styles and inner talent, that it's amazing that this band isn't regarded more highly.

One of the few multi-cultural bands in recorded history should be at least held up in some esteem for just being willing to 'mix and match'. This band was comprised of Neftali Santiago on Drums, Omar Mesa on Guitar, Fudgie Kae on Bass & Acoustic guitar, Claude Cave on Keyboards, and the Brothers Wilson, Lou on Trumpet, Ric on Sax, and multi-instrumentalist Carlos on Trombone, Sax, Flute, Guitar and Drums. There is a huge amount of talent just in the players. But does it make great material?

Yes.

There are as many multi-cultural influences on the music that a multi-cultural band can come up with, and throughout this whole album, many different forms of music are explored. Often placed one on top of the other. And it has some serious Funk on it as well.

Claude Cave's 'Hang Loose' is pure Funk mixed with Afro-cuban rhythms. Opening the album with very strong material often says that the rest won't match up. Not on this album. It actually gets better as it progresses, and by the time 'Loose' is over, and the Wilson Brothers 'Fencewalk' begins, you're hearing one of the Funkiest bands from the 1970's. Omar Mesa's guitar solo in 'Fencewalk' is just one of its highlights, because the song just on its own would be easy pickings for any Hip~Hop, Rap sample.

There's a quick jump in styles into The Wilson Brothers 'Hágalo', which is pure Latino/Hispanic in its execution. Listening to it, you wouldn't know the band was comprised of such a mixture of races, all jumping from Funk to Latino, and other surprises along the way. What follows is The Wilson Brothers standout track, 'Don't Mess With People', which literally has one of the funkiest 'break' sections I've ever heard. It's almost ''too funky'', and when you wonder if something is just too much, when it overloads your senses because it is just so good, it almost gets frightening. '.....People' has a killer break section. Absolutely Funk.

What used to be Side Two opens with The Wilson Brothers 'Polk Street Carnival', in its mixture of Calypso, and Latino music, it truly groundbreaks just in mixing the two styles. Omar Mesa's 'Golden Stone' follows, and is one of the true highlights of the album. It's Beatles / Chicago / Blood Sweat & Tears leanings can't be ignored, but it boasts a great organ solo by Claude Cave, who also adds some interesting Moog Synthesiser treatments to the song. The whole song is comprised of quite a few sections in its 7 minutes, easily moving from one to the other. It's opening is Pop, it then goes to Jazz (Chicago/BS& T styled), I also hear the Association. It then has extended solos from Mesa & Cave, and then moves into very heavy rock. 'Golden Stone' I'm surprised I have never heard on Radio. The next song is Fudgie Kae's 'Out With The Boys', an acoustic ballad about drinking and lamenting. To be truthful, the song is nice, but I got confused midway lyrically about who he was talking about! First it's him, then it's his girl, then there's these other two guys. I got lost! I'll have to give the song (which I own on vinyl, from when it was originally issued) another try. But it's like a 5 minute soap opera.

The album closes with a truly stand-out, beautiful song, The Wilson Brothers 'Moroccan Nights'. Carlos Wilson's Flute playing makes this song a delight to listen to, with its very laid back funk atmosphere, and interesting syncopated percussion. A great way to close an album that is quite near perfect.

This is definitely an album worth a purchase and listen, because MANDRILL were historically important, and musically as well.

5 out of 5 stars Better "Hang Loose"...........2003-07-22

If you love funky music...no let me get this right...If you love "music", this is a must-have album..Like it's recent ablum "Mandrill Is" , "Composite Truth" showcases Mandrill's mastery of different cultures and styles.. Moroccan nights is a instrumental masterpiece, Polk Street Carnival puts you right on the Island, Hang Loose is cold blooded funk at it's best and Fencewalk is on a level by itself..Great Album....

5 out of 5 stars HAGALO'(DO IT !).......2003-05-17

This band is a household name if you are into serious funk/R & B.
The Wilson Brothers, Carlos, Lou, and Rick are the heart and soul of Mandrill. Their Afro-Panaminian roots show loud and clear on this release. "Fencewalk" is a song that has been duplicated by almost every local funk band then in 1973 and now. "Hagalo" is a straight up Latin piece with serious percussion and horns. These brothers play multiple instruments. I saw then live in Philly in August of 2002, Mandrill has not lost a beat in over thirty years! I strongly suggest that you buy this CD now! Even if you already have it on vinyl, get it on CD, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly underrated!.......2000-12-13

This is one of the finest albums by one of the most incredible 1970s soul/jazz/funk bands ever! How this band is not a household name is beyond me...but, for anybody that has ever enjoyed an Earth, Wind & Fire album, Mandrill is right up the alley. Mandrill's "hit," if you will, "Fencewalk," has got to be one of the HEAVIEST funk grooves of all time. I have yet to play some Mandrill for somebody without getting some positive feedback.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgically reminiscent........1999-04-25

As a small boy, I can remember my mother playing this album to death on her old Kenwood stereo system. This album brings me back to my youth and how TRUE music is supposed to be. I love this album from the very first time I heard it. What is truly amazing is I love it the same almost 25 years later.

Somewhere between the nasty-girlisms of Millie Jackson and the morality tales of Shirley Brown--and come to think of it, the morality tales of Millie Jackson--rests Truth Hurts. After one album under the auspices of Dr. Dre, the singer returns with Raphael Saadiq's Pookie label. Even Saadiq's most straightforward projects come with offbeat moments: Right Now puts Truth's not-shy persona and her rich, overdubbed vocals alongside his insinuating steel guitar ("Catch 22") and Bollywood-tinged tracks that suggest that producers Alonzo Jackson and Brian "B. Dub" Wilson have been paying attention to Timbaland's recent work. At the heart of all this is one woman's, er, truth, regrets and all. Suited for both street cruising and bedroom listening, Ready Now promises more to come from this intriguing talent. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Truth is more than ready.......2005-08-31

Truth's second album, Ready Now succeeds her debut in a number of ways. Unlike Truthfully Speaking, Ready Now isn't full of the A-list producers her debut featured. Truth's music isn't hurt by the abscense of big names such as Timbaland or Dr. Dre. Working with lesser known producers can be a step in the right direction for artists being that it creates a more "original" sound. Production wise Tony Toni Tone frontman, Raphael Saadiq takes on the production duties among others. Saadiq known for his bluesy southern soul and funk works well with Truth. On the funky title track, Truth sings over a pulsating beat that sucks you in with illict lyrics. Truth also seems to have toned down on her vocals which before were all over the place. This time Truth is more subdued delivering smoldering sexy soul music which is slowly becoming her trademark. While this album isn't as commercial as her first release listeners will enjoy Truth's sassiness and sense of humor. Truth hurts, but it definitely feels good!

4 out of 5 stars Not her best, but ok.......2005-03-19

It was ok but it should have been much longer. 11 songs just doesnt cut it with an rnb record. Her first album was a blockbuster this one was just an attempt to release another cd. Knock Knock, and Ready Now, Phone Sex, and Catch 22 are the basic good songs here.

3 out of 5 stars I don't think the world was ready for the Truth!.......2005-01-30

Truth Hurts came out a few years back with her blazing single "Addictive" which featured Rakim. Being that she was one of Dr. Dre's girls, she had a West Coast vibe. Nobody knew who she was or what she could accomplish. Many people loved the single but hated the album "Truthfully Speaking". Truth went back into the studio before completing her sophomore album "Ready Now" which is by far a great CD. Some songs stand out more than others, but after one day with this CD, you're hooked.

1. Knock Knock (8/10) - Nice song with a hot beat. You can't help but nod your head to the beat. Vocals are great. Rafael Saadiq helps on this track.

2. Ready Now (10/10) - The best song on the album. I believe it was a single though I never heard much about it. The beat is hot and different which makes me attracted to it. I love this song!

3. Ride (6/10) - Nice beat, nice lyrics, but it's missing something.

4. Love U Better (9/10) - A deep, sexual song. Truth is really X-Rated on much of her album. This song takes you into sexual extasy.

5. Catch 22 (5/10) - Alright song. Nothing special.

6. Phone Sex (8/10) - A very sexy song. The beat gets you all excited. Never heard a song about phone sex before.

7. Whatchu Sayin' (featuring Loon) (4/10) - Very weird. I don't like this song that much.

8. Lifetime (Interlude) - Just an interlude where she calls up some girl.

9. Lifetime (2/10) - Nothing special here. She gets a 2 for her vocals because she can sing!

10. Can't Be Mad (6/10) - Never really listen to it, but the beat is good and the vocals sound tight.

11. U (8/10) - Truth slows it down and stretches it out for this 7 minute song. Although it tends to repeat itself, it doesn't get old. It's nice.

If Truth had more promotion behind this album, it could have done better than it did.
