Sub-Pop Records is best known for having the Shins signed on to their label. I mean, everybody's heard of the Shins. But some of their bands aren't quite so well know, and "The Eagle is the Most Popular Bird" is a pretty good sampler to investigate the other bands signed to Sub Pop. Some are good, some are bad, and a few are ugly.

It kicks off with a punky-pop tune by Nebula, "Do It Now," followed by the plaintively yowly "Temptation Island" by Love As Laughter. At times, it's hard to tell these two apart. But Radio Birdman makes a hit with the danceable guitar-heavy "Murder City Nights," followed by songs by Arlo (pleasant "Shutterbug"), Mark Lanegan (the ethereal "Kimiko's Dream House") and Elemental And Heather Duby's swirling, dreamlike "Love You More."

Then we stray into trippier turf with the blipping, distorted, robotic "Where's the Fire" by Steve Fisk, who is obviously smoking something amazing. Following it up is an annoying song by the Rapture (yowling "Out Of The Races And Onto The Tracks"), Zen Guerilla (vaguely countryish "Evening Sun"), Beachwood Sparks (sweet "Confusion Is Nothing New"), and Pleasure Forever's weird piano-driven "You And I Were Meant To Drown." Oh yes, and the Shins' "New Slang," of course. Who could forget them?

Certainly Sub Pop can't be blamed for having the same kind of music all the time... because they don't. They have some seriously emotional rock, pop, psychedelic pop, a bit of electronica, and so on. But they all tend to be a little on the weird side, with a vaguely eerie undertone. In a good way.

Some of the bands like the Rapture, Nebula and Migala strike out in this with unengaging music. Others like Arlo, Vue and Black Halos, could have chosen somewhat better songs, but the results are pleasant enough. But the introductions to Steve Fisk, Pleasure Forever, and Mark Lanegan are worth the ride. And they tend to show more innovation. Even the not-so-good ones show a certain musical flexibility, like the writhing guitar riffs in "Do It Now."

"The Eagle is the Most Popular Bird" is a pretty good way to sample the lesser-known bands of Sub-Pop, even if you don't like overwrought rock numbers. And if you've perchance never heard them, to the Shins too.
