This record is year's ahead of it's time. Many of the musicians have gone on to greatness in subsequent projects. Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart) contributes, as well as Sebastian Steinberg, now of Soul Coughing.

Good cd, have liked it since I was younger. Very pleased w/ price and shipping time.
Fun Ska CD.......2006-10-30
This is a very fun ska CD. The band is tight, the lyrics are cheeky, and the experience of listing to these guys will put a big smile on your face. Would highly recommned this CD to any ska fan looking for an addition to their collection. Also would recommend Save Ferris and anything by Bop Harvey.
looking for an album to cheer you up?.......2006-09-08
this is by far the best cd reel big fish has made. there is not a song that i don't like on here. reel big fish can always cheer me up with their uptempo popska. this album ranges from the funny "she has a girlfriend now", to a little aggressive "skatanic", to just plain catchy "sellout" and "trendy." the only people who i know that don't enjoy this album, don't like this kind of music.
buy this now!.......2006-08-31
If you're a fan of ska, you should definitely buy this album. hey, even if you don't like ska you should still buy this because it is just that good. This is probably the greatest reel big fish album ever (although they have never made a bad one).
best ska cd ever.......2006-07-27
In my opinion, this is the best ska cd ever. I was first introduced to Reel Big Fish, like many of us, with the radio success of "sell out" around 1997. Over the years, i forgot about Reel Big Fish as my music choices went down the drain. However, about a year and a half ago, i saw this cd in the record store and picked it up.
My life was completely changed. This cd made me an instant ska fan, and I have continued to grow into a bigger ska fan since that time. "Turn the Radio Off" is filled with catchy rhythms, humorous lyrics, and fantastic horn lines. Even today, after the thousands upon thousands of times that I've listened to this cd, there is not a single song I can skip.
Whenever anyone asks me about ska, or "what's a good ska band", the first thing I tell them is to pick up this cd. This cd has made me the ska fan that I am today. This album is an essential to any collection, whether you like ska or not. Virtually every true music fan that I know loves this album, ranging from other ska fans to punk kids to alternative kids and even to emo fans. Go out and get this cd today, either here on amazon or at any record store. You won't regret it.

Customer Reviews:
The funniest Schickele piece ever!.......2006-05-23
My experience with the 1712 Overture is similar to Victoria's (in another review). I was listening to the car radio when I heard the dissonant pile-up halfway through, and almost drove off the Interstate.
It should be noted that the Amazon listing is incorrect. The 1712 Overture is in reality conducted by "Walter Bruno" who is actually David Zinman. It is most assuredly not conducted by Bruno Walter (can you imagine that?), who died in 1962.
Highly recommended.
P D Q on form again.......2005-07-20
P D Q has quite a cult following among the 'cognoscenti', and others may know some of his works without being aware of it or why. Much of this is fun listening if you have that kind of mind &/or background, and has the virtual ring of period authenticity.
Classical music, like any living corpus of cultural tradition (eg religion, sport & politics) should be well capable of laughing at itself. Others have done so successfully (Hoffnung, Spike Jones, the Comedy Harmonists et al.) and PDQ follows in a worthy & rollicking tradition!
beware of the organ cadenza!.......2005-05-18
This is my favourite PDQ Bach collection. The 1712 Overture alone is worth the price of admission. The use of the motif from 'I Ain't Got No Home' is inspired and the skewering of 'Day Tripper' reduces me to helpless giggles every time.
Einstein on the Fritz is a tonic to anyone sick of the pretentious meanderings of Philip Glass, Taverner et al. And Cappricio La Poucelle de New Orleans (engineered by Burt Bach, a living direct decendant of JS Bach) is frighteningly intense, as well as hysterical. These musicians are also terrific - the pieces wouldn't work at all otherwise. And who couldn't love the rapturous intro to The Preachers of Crimetheous - featuring the most incredible percussion playing since Ginger Baker's 'Toad'.
All in all, this is a completely ridiculous delight!
Another assault to your funny bone!.......2004-04-12
P Schickele does it yet again! He successfullly skewers the classics again. My personal fave is Einstein On The Fritz, where he does a wonderful job of spoofing Philip Glass.....Only the Prof. is so twisted as to be able to sneak in 'Three Blind Mice" in the middle of a Glassian composition!
PDQ Bach at his best (worst).......2001-11-13
Mr. Schickele is a genius, he's taken music history and disgraced it, apocryphally!
the 1712 overture pokes fun at just about every type of music out there, and what the 1712 doesn't defile, the rest of the tracks on this CD pick up the slack.
This incredibly irreverent album is a must for music lovers everywhere!
Get yourself a copy! You won't be disappointed!

The second generation of SoCal ska kids didn't take themselves too seriously, it seems, not when the self-deprecating "Sell Out" was the big single that propelled Turn the Radio Off up the charts. According to the cover, the album was "Sanitized for Your Protection," and that was close to the truth--bubbly pop melodies with a ska beat and plenty of horns, all catchy and decidedly goofy and inoffensive. The thing was, it worked. Reel Big Fish could play, they could write, and sing. And they pushed ska's profile even higher. The glistening, airy foam on the Third Wave. Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
As a die hard RBF fan, I can say this isn't one of their better projects........2007-01-05
Not many words that can describe music. All I can say to this is, it's not up to RBF's game. The songs aren't rhytmic and the lyrics seem rebelling as usual, but the music doesn't drive with it. It's good though. Just not as good as I hoped it to be.
Just can't explain it.......2005-04-26
Oh my god, this was my first Reel Big Fish CD. I got it back in 2001. And I am still not even an ounce sick of it. It is so well put together. There is literally not one song that is not better than any band's best song. You could take "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sell Outs", and throw any random song off of this CD, and blow that song to bits. Even though I absolutely love that song. Please buy this CD and brighten your day.
My favorite band, best ska band ever.......2003-05-26
This is the first release of the band, and it will show you why they are so popular and the best ska band ever. They are not as punk as most other ska bands. This is their best cd, but every other one is spectacular. I've seen them live several times, and I will go to see every concert they are at.
Start of A Beautiful Thing.......2001-12-01
This is music right here folks. I love this CD to death. I feel that it is amazing. A band that once was a Rock band they have stepped up in the world. They have gone from hard rock to fast-paced-skankable Ska. This music will have you jumping out of your sit dancing while at the same time singing along. The CD start off right from the get go. When Aaron first belts out the lyrics to "Sell Out" to the end with "Alternative Baby." This is just an awesome C.D. Aaron Plays a mean guitar. Who ever thought of guitar riffs in a ska band? Hey you should really check out their cover of "Take On Me." AMAZING!! Not on this CD though. This CD is for anyone who likes Less Than Jake, Blink-182, Goldfinger. AH HELL THIS CD IS FOR EVERYONE!!
SKA GODS.......2001-10-14
Reel Big Fish can makes me want to SKANK. They are the definition of SKA. "Beer" is my moto and "Alternative Girl" is my theme song.

worth money.......2007-05-24
this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.
Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21
Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.
A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30
If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.
Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.
Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20
Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

Customer Reviews:
redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Performances of FZ Music.......2007-02-09
This disc contains some really nice renditions of Frank Zappa pieces. In some instances, more palatable than the originals, owing to Zappa's penchant for really abrupt maneuvering or other insertions causing a jarring effect on the listener. I find that Ed Palermo's renditions are much more straight-forward, and therefore more listenable than Frank's own versions.
This music is certainly less likely to be immediately turned off by the folks who automatically smell that Zappa aroma and don't want to give it a try. For those type of uninitiated listeners, this Zappa music is actually listenable.
Ed Palermo plays the tunes very true to the original compositions so that you know you're listening to somebody playing Zappa.
Palermo could almost be credited with co-writing because, as is evidence with Sofa #1, there is an extra section in the middle featuring xylophone and sax interlude not written into the original by Zappa but plays well within the context of the song. Palermo takes just enough liberty with the music to keep it very much Frank Zappa's but puts his own stamp on it as well. I think it is truly an homage to Zappa to add to his music without blatantly changing it.
Paired with Palermo's first Zappa tribute disc, Ed Palermo Big Band Plays the Music Of Frank Zappa, you get some first-rate performances of Zappa music!
To reiterate: This is great Zappa Jazz music which non-Zappa listeners can get fooled into tapping their foot to. Thank you, Ed Palermo for making this wonderful tribute to the Late, Great Frank Zappa! ARF!!
Yep !.......2006-12-22
OK. Its fabulous...
The nearly perfect tempo, playing and sound quality were a bit - staggering - at first. But the music selections, playful arrangements, and obvious reverence toward the material shine brighter with each listening. Some of the song choices are surprising and haunting...ie Sleep Dirt. Thank you Ed and Band.
+ 1/2 stars...Big Band Spin on Zappa Classics.......2006-10-09
For more than a decade alto sax player Ed Palermo has been performing big band versions of his musical hero, Frank Zappa. On TAKE YOUR CLOTHES OFF WHEN YOU DANCE, Palermo mostly sticks to Zappa's classic early period by covering tracks from Zappa's WE'RE ONLY IT IT FOR THE MONEY(1968), including a Latin-styled take on the title tune and a rare vocal on "Mom And Dad/Oh No"; as well as "Pound for a Brown on the Bus" from UNCLE MEAT (1969), "Gumbo Variations" from HOT RATS (1969), and "Dwarf Nebula..." from "WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH (1970). The most recent Zappa composition is "Moggio," which closes the CD, from MAN FROM UTOPIA (1983).
It's worth noting that with this second release of Zappa compositions from Palermo, Palermo--at 52--is the same age as Zappa when he died in 1993. Palermo's arrangments are always engaging and contain the essence of the originals while putting his own unique stamp on them. As a fan who first fell under Zappa's spell when I heard WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY and UNCLE MEAT when I was in high school, it's refreshing to hear Palermo breathe new life into these songs. [PS: For those reviewers who lament that his first Zappa tribute CD is out of print, according to a recent interview, Palermo says he still has a few available directly through him at edpalermo@comscast.net.]HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Accessible Zappa, Smooth & Tight Musicianship!.......2006-08-29
I've been waiting for this record for eight years ... thanks Ed, Carl, Ted, et al., for exceeding my expectations. I reviewed their first record which I think is great ... as Ed writes in his liner notes, it's a shame it's out of print. (Um, hey Ed ... can ya maybe do sumpin' about dat?)
This CD is a rollicking, gymnastic jazz tour-de-force. Although I'm still spinning it, I'm impressed by the production, the excellent musicianship and overall sound of this record. At the risk of being redundant, it's great for Zappa enthusiasts like myself and it's cool jazz sound is totally unlike the vapid "cool jazz sound" found on stupid "cool jazz" radio stations. At the risk of sounding pedantic, this is music for people who like good, complex, well-executed, yet soulful music.
And, most importantly, Ed's passion for FZ's work is more than evident. Thanks for carrying on the legacy ... Frank's digging it big time, I know it!
A notch below their first release.......2006-08-05
First off, this CD is excellent. The only complaint I have it that their first release contained a lot more guitar work and it sizzles while still paying tribute to FZ's unique technique.
What I really enjoy about the arrangements is that there are snippets of many other FZ songs contained within. They might be only a stanza or two but Zappaphiles will relish identifying them. The performances are tight yet have an improvisational feel to portions. The audio quality is top notch to boot. I have been listening to this CD non-stop since I bought it and I'm still hearing new things in the songs. I regret that their first CD is no longer in print as I'm sure anyone finding this release enjoyable will really declare the first one a true gem. I wonder how Gail, Dweezil and the rest of the Zappa clan feel when they hear Frank's wonderful music in this jazz environment? I would hope they are as grateful as I am to know that this American composer is still very much alive in this music and still held in awe by those who loved him and his musical genius. Thanks, Ed for keeping the flame burning. I'm making a trip to NYC to hear this band perform this material live--but that's another review.

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David Horiuchi

Y'all are crazy!.......2006-11-03
The Billy Porter duet is one of the most unique and thrilling songs on the cd. What a fantastic re-invention of that song. And their voices by themselves and together are glorious. Its all personal taste and by no means is that the only good song. Its probably THE best solo cd by a broadway artist. Incredible!
Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02
Liz Callaway has one of the most enthralling voices around. Her voice is melodious and very soothing and especially shines in soft and subdued ballads. She doesn't have a big voice but she has an amazing range and sense of melody.
She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.
She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.
Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.
"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.
Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.
She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.
Grade= A
Liz Callaway SOARS!.......2005-06-27
Wow! I love this cd! I went to a camp in Decatur, Illinois called Showchoir Camps of America. One night, as our evening entertainment, she performed this entire album!! That afternoon Ms. Liz came for a question and answer session with Phil Reno. She is such a down to earth person and sooo very talented! At the concert, I started to cry! During one song, Ms. Liz forgot the words to a song ( actually, I forgot what the song was called!), so she just made up some words to it!! If you want a TRUELY talented performer, Liz Callaway is the one for you!
....Love this album too!.......2004-08-18
I love this album. There are a few songs I kinda skip, because it was just weird. That song being "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair", weird. I loved the duet "Where is Love" from the musical Oliver. "Stop,Time" from the musical BIG (grab your puffs!). I enjoyed the 50's sounding "One Boy!" from Bye,Bye Birdie. Liz has a wonderful range, and flattering childish tone to her voice, reaching notes that would take me years of training to ever reach again! She has complied all these exciting songs and ends the album with "A Place Called Home", from A Christmas Carol. I could never give her enough praise. If you like Strisand, and Sintra, you'll love her too! :-) Liz is always shinning when she sings! Enjoy!
Unknown Talent Sings Unknown and Known Broadway Songs.......2003-06-10
... I thought I recognized the voice but I couldn't quite place it. I finally realized that she was the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated movie. Meg Ryan was the speaking voice. Liz Callaway has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and also a very strong voice. I love her rendition of Knowing When to Leave/Promises, Promises by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Great arrangements. Dionne Warwick, who I am also a fan of covered Promises, and the Carpenters sang a version of Knowing When to Leave. I'm also a Carpenters' fan. On this album all the songs are Broadway. Many I hadn't heard before but love now due to Liz. The first song, You There in the Backrow is a tribute to fans of shows. "Watch me sing my song for you" the words go. Liz makes you want to jump to your feet. Liz does a rendition of I' Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific, rock version. I can't say that's my favorite, but favorite to one of my friends. Since You Stayed Here, another unknown song to me, is quiet and hauntingly beautiful. Bette Midler does a version of this I think on her CD with From a Distance. She sings a duet with her sister, Ann Hampton Callaway who sings on Sibling Revelry with Liz. Ann wrote and sang the theme from The Nanny. The song Liz and Callaway and here sister does is Our Time. It's also on Sibling Revelry. Great duet. One of my favorites on the CD is Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim. The words are a plea to marry me, a little. The song is an almost a desperate plea to marry me but you don't have to make promises you don't want to, an open marriage? Make a few demands a few that I'm able to fulfill. She sings I'm ready. We won't have to give up a thing, we'll stay who we are the words say. Someone I'm Ready. I would give this song 5 stars on its own. It makes me cry because she sounds like she will settle but at the same time she wants the love fully. The arrngements on this album are unique. She sings I've Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun jazzy. Most of the other songs on the album are not known by most people. I can only say that Liz makes you want to see these shows and she pulls you in. I think I've become her biggest fan. I'm a singer too. I could see myself singing with her. I have her The Beat Goes On album too with sixties hits. I hope that people will get to know her because if you haven't heard this or her voice, you are going to be deprived of a remarkale clear strong voice. Buy this. I promise you won't be sorry! One more addition, Meadowlark. Spectacular! The story tells of someone hesitating because the time wasn't right and she learns from the story to live your life, climb every mtn.

Customer Reviews:
Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15
This CD is fun and action packed as much as you could hope for in a CD. He uses quotes from many famous folk and classical songs and implements them into his own compositions with a bit of a twist. For example, in Classical rap, where he raps about being the best rapper in the world with terrific brass interludes between the verses. The orchestra plays a clip from Vivaldi's "Spring" and then he twists it into a record "wicky-wicky" to the same tune. He introduces every peice before it is played in a hilarious manner in which he talks about the peice and something else that was going on in the composers mind as he wrote the peice. Starting at the begining-
This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.
1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.
Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.
The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.
What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

DE MAXIMUS.......2004-02-10
Beautifully configured arrangements, precise execution, no-nonsense big-band straight ahead jazz at its best. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Great Big Band Sound.......2000-03-13
This is an outstanding CD. The band is tight and the playing is crisp and spirited. Kubis is a brilliant arranger - I have heard other big bands play his stuff, which prompted me to seek his own work, and I was NOT disappointed. Very impressive ensemble and solo playing. The drummer on this CD, Matt Johnson, is a Monster!
Good modern big band sound.......1998-09-18
Tom Kubis is a good enough soprano sax player, but he's an impressive arranger. His arrangements are full of tight harmonies and great counter lines, without being overcomplicated. The band plays his charts beautifully.
