Having successfully balanced atonal freak-outs with rock song structure on their previous release, EVOL, Sonic Youth went further towards convention with this concise, "all rock" (their words) album. Recorded on old tube equipment instead of then-emerging digital technology, the album's 10 songs have an impressively warm, cozy vibe even as they tear up the pavement underneath. "(I Got a) Catholic Block," "Pacific Coast Highway," and a vicious cover of Crime's "Hot Wire My Heart" are propelled by the newfound power of drummer Steve Shelley, who doesn't let the band's arty self-consciousness inhibit the songs' natural drive. --Rob O'Connor --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars A great find!.......2007-07-15

Sister Hazel did it again! They made a record that you can just stick in the car and play right through without ever hitting the "skip" button. There are many great songs on this album so it's hard to pick a favorite, but "On Your Mind" really does it for me. Hazel's excellent drummer, Mark Trojanowski, finds some incredible rythyms that are reminiscent of The Police - and then the vocal harmonies will just have you singing in the car. "Sweet Destiny" and "Boy Next Door" are two more irresistable melodies and reminders of all that is great about this band from Gainesville, Florida. "Grand Canyon" is just classic Sister Hazel and will have you up and dancing.
If you don't own any Sister Hazel yet, you really should check out Chasing Daylight and their last album, Absolutely, which is also loaded with greatness. Everyone needs at least 2 or 3 Sister Hazel albums to just put on at a party and then forget about needing to change the music. And if you watch their "rockumentary" DVD, "A Life in the Day", you'll see why those of us in Florida love to catch them live in concert . . . early and often!

Why in the H*ll don't these guys get to number ONE everywhere in the world??
Come on everybody!! , there is no band who writes songs like these do.
Here in holland some songs are used for commercials, and that's not what the songs are used for.
The songs need to be on radio for everyone to hear and buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Band Ever.......2007-07-09

Being a B-sides album definetely doesn't leave BAM! out of the competition for "Best Sister Hazel Album". Of course, it is impossibly hard to choose the best one - just as hard as it is to choose a favorite song out of BAM!. After listening to it a few times, you realize what a B-side means with Sister Hazel: instead of being not-so-good songs, they all fit right in with the rest of their work. The one reason why they didn't come out in previuos albums was lack of space, but they are really songs that should have always been there.

Most of the tracks go along the same lines as the band's previous records. There are the upbeat feel-good songs like Grand Canyon, and Sail Away, which takes you right into the Rock Boat, the band's yearly music festival at sea. Then there are the beautifully written ballads like Sweet Destiny, On Your Mind, and Mona Lisa.

For the fans who are always eager to hear the band doing something different, there's the punk-rock of Work In Progress, and the heavier Mosquito. But the one thing that is never different is that there is not one bad song in the whole album. Pretty soon you forget that these are songs you didn't know a short time ago, and each and every one of them becomes like an old friend you often find yourself thinking about.

The cover of BAM! shows the guys as superheroes, and that's what they really are. Time and again they manage to write a song that relates so completely with what is going on in our lives, it makes us feel like someone out there understands us, we're not alone and everything will be all right in the end. For me, this time, it's What Kind of Living, a catchy song about being stuck in a relationship going nowhere. Sister Hazel has saved my life more than once in this way, by bringing music and beauty to every kind of feeling, and for that they really are my superheroes.

Any Sister Hazel fan absolutely must have this album, because the collection would be incomplte without it. And anyone who is not yet a Sister Hazel fan... it's time to start! So turn up the volume, add a little BAM! to the Ginger Ale, and go have fun with this newest Hazel journey!

5 out of 5 stars ZAP, WHAM, BAM!.......2007-06-30

My first listen to this CD felt like someone had just strapped me on an exhilarating RIDE and I didn't want OFF! We are the lucky fans who get another ROCKIN CD from the Far Out Fab Five! From the first cut, What Kind of Living, you feel the energy! You know they're having a BLAST making this for their fans! Having listened to the Boy Next Door from Ken's acoustical set on TRB03, it's amazing to me that they have all these songs dancing in their heads for years! Work in Progress feels like it could be their theme song because following their passions have carved their careers in this fashion. Sweet Destiny is a classic SH song! Love the Block Copeland harmonies and the sha na na na nas! Especially love the instrumentals on the ending of On your Mind. Sick to My Soul has much energy, has you snapping, and lyrics that will surely touch alot of our heart strings. Mosquito is a song with a quirky analogy of to how love can make you feel. Not taking themselves too seriously is a trait we don't want them to lose! By the time you get to Little Black heart, you are in FULL throttle!! After the first verse and the instruments kick in, you're screaming, "YES!!" Definitely one of my favorites on this CD. Love the order of the songs too. You are ROCKIN hard and then Sail Away comes on, and smooths out the ride, taking you onto "higher ground"! Onto Wrong the Right Way and you feel yourself back in time somewhere, being able to relate. Never been to Grand Canyon, but listening to this song makes you want to explore and hike, and inspires you. Save Myself is an introspective tune, pushing you to let go of your fears and be true to yourself. Drew's southern drawl in Can't Get You Off My Mind reminds us of the many faces of these artists and how well they blend. As for She's Gone, I can't WAIT to hear this one LIVE! It starts off melancholy and by the time we get into Ryan's and Jett's guitars and Mark's heartbeat, don't have a face left - it was ROCKED OFF! Saving the best for last, Mona Lisas! Truth Is, when I kept hitting rewind, I knew it was my favorite! Ye-e-ah to Ryan's licks and kicks!

Thanking our lucky stars that these 5 musicians and the various other artists helping with producing, mixing, or playing their instruments, have produced this passionate, fun, lively CD! Anxiously awaiting more BAM!!! :O)

5 out of 5 stars add a little "BAM" to the gingerale!!.......2007-06-25

Sister Hazel is everything that music should be. The artists are five of the nicest guys who genuinely care about their fans. With all they give to the "Hazelnut" community, they really are like their superhero characters on the cover. Listening to a Hazel cd is like hanging out with a close group of friends. It's fun, comfortable, and you can spend hours and hours with them and it feels like just a few minutes. And, like with true best friends, you are challenged to think, feel, and connect. Sister Hazel's songs are meaningful, soulful, and speak to the world in which we live, and the hearts in each of us. With honest, raw passion, the music reflects all the different places on the emotional spectrum and takes the listener on a journey from heartache to utter ecstasy. There is enough "grit" in the music to keep it real, and yet from the positive optimism in the songs we learn that if we really try, reach out to others, and go for our dreams, we can make this world a really great place. Sister Hazel does not disappoint with their newest cd, BAM! The long-time Hazlnuts will love the smorgasbord collection of "B sides and rarities" and those new to Sister Hazel will be sucked in immediately and will want to add all the other cds to their collection. All of the lyrics, vocals, and instrumental work come together to make a top-notch rock album filled with different colors and textures. Like with all their other cds, there is not a bad song, or even one that is just so-so. You can listen to BAM all the way through over and over again and the songs will still hit you like the first time.

Whoopi Goldberg has a lot of talents, but singing is not one of them. Hearing her massacre Motown classics like "Dancing in the Street," "Ball of Confusion" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in her flat, dull voice on this soundtrack album would be harmless if a whole generation weren't being introduced to these songs through her clumsy performances. Several choirs turn in lackluster performances of gospel numbers. The disc's one redeeming moment is Aretha Franklin's overpowering delivery of "A Deeper Love," written and produced by C+C Music Factory. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2007-06-16

I remember when this movie first came out. My brother rented it and let me watch with him. I watched it like 2 more times before he had to take it back. I then bought the movie and it is still one of my favorite movies today. I like the movie soo much because of the music. I had the soundtrack on a cassette tape and I use to listen to it all the time in my portable tape player (that seems like ages ago) and I'm only 21! Lol! Anyways this is a great album to listen to...especially when you love to sing like I do!!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE AND CD........2007-01-04

I saw this movie a long time ago and loved it. The CD Soundtrack has great inspirational songs from the film and when I got it, I was so happy to sing along with it.

5 out of 5 stars Love the music.......2006-08-21

Loved the movie, loved the music. I purchased this CD for my 4 year old granddaughter who watched the movie and loved it. She likes to listen to it in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Let the whole earth sing!.......2006-05-03

Amazon.com, Geoffrey Himes must have a tin ear!

Forget the "official" review. The "joyful, joyful" finale alone is worth the price of this soundtrack all by itself! It truly captures the joy that should ALWAYS be the centerpiece of the Christian life.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS EVER.......2006-01-29

Please everybody ignores Amazon's review of this album. I am 16 years old, and I was three years old when this movie and soundtrack came out. And at an early age this entire project(movie and soundtrack) gave me a love of music, which is why I like to sing now and introduced me to quality music and great classics, and not like the mess that we hear today. So for anybody who has contemplated bying this project, listen if everytime you watch the movie, you cant help to sing along with them, them you need to purchase this album. Because it will certainly bless you.

This CD is AWESOME!!!!
To anyone interested in attending a Live Show but not sure who to see, I have been to plenty, and must admit that Big Head Todd and the Monsters (BHTM) is by far the BEST! The are awesome performers and they LOVE their fans! I have been to their past two live shows in Cleveland at the House of Blues, and had an experience of a life time both times. Partied hard, enjoyed great music, and even got to chat with the band, have pictures taken with them, and they were happy to autograph anything after the show! They are very down to earth, great guys..........its like hanging out with old friends!! Check them out:

5 out of 5 stars Caught Me Off Guard!!!.......2006-07-14

Yes, this release was much more than I expected. About 12 years ago, a fellow musician loaned me this(a hard-rock/metal guitarist at that)and I've been hooked ever since. To be honest, I'm quite "choosey" when it comes to buying albums, so the chances of me picking up a CD by a band called Big Head Todd was very unlikely. Had this friend not turned me onto 'Sister Sweetly', it would have definitely been MY LOSS! After a few listens, I was truly immersed in this modern 'classic'. There were no 'groundbreaking' sounds, vocals, musical ideas,etc...but something about this album and band seemed 'New' and 'Different' to me. The overall "vibe" of the songs give this CD its wonderful 'Flow' (other than maybe "Groove Thing"). And this is NOT your everyday "run-of-the-mill" pop/rock album. No, this has much more than just catchy melodies and vocals---its packed with thoughtful lyrics, super-tasteful playing and mood-inducing, introspective sounds---many of the qualities that keeps me coming back to certain albums. As for the individual songs on 'SS', I can honestly say there are NO bad/filler tunes to be heard here. They are all very good songs, and even great in a couple of cases. Without going into a song analysis, I would pick "Tommorrow Never Comes", "Broken Hearted Savior", "Bittersweet" and "It's Alright" as personal favorites (though I always listen to the album as a whole). Actually, the last 2 mentioned songs ring most True with my wife and me, as these were our favorites when we first started dating...many memories of special times/moments are conjured-up everytime we hear one of these great songs(so much so, that we BOTH own a copy). Again, even though I haven't mentioned all the songs...they are all well-written,well-played,catchy tunes that work well within the structure of the whole album. So there you have it...one of the few pop/rock, 5-star album reviews your likely to find from this reviewer---Strongly Recommended!

As a couple of side-notes; In the years that have passed, I have returned the "favor" and turned several friends onto this album who, like me, may have never been exposed to this wonderful music...the consensus?---they love it too! Also, after the 12 years since first hearing BHT, I recently decided to try a few of their other releases---"Strategem", "Beautiful World" and "Midnight Radio"...and while I don't expect the greatness of 'Sister', I am nonetheless looking forward to checking them out.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2006-05-06

How can you rate an album as flawless? Well, in my opinion, it only happens when you put the disc in and never skip a song. You are compelled to listen to every song sequentially because each song grabs you in the first 5 seconds. You never get the feeling that they needed a couple of "filler" songs and threw together some crap in the studio (and lets face it, this is exactly what most bands today are doing).

That's what this CD is like. Every song is valuable and an experience unto itself. If you like to think, reflect and maybe even mourn a little, this disc is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2005-04-15

I've been listening to this CD for years, and I never get tired of it. It's soulful, mellow, and COOL. Every song is good. It's not particularly happy music, but it sure makes me feel good.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2005-04-06

This album is still in my rotation after 14 yrs. It is timeless. Bittersweet was popular during a particularly bittersweet time of my life. The song rang true for me then and still makes me vividly remember that time and relationship. When he sings "I'm older now. I work in the city. We live together. But it's different than my dream.....Are we everything we wanted?" This song is timeless because I still wonder these same things.

The best song is actually Tomorrow Never Comes. It's lyrics are even more pointed and questioning. "He worked so hard so he'd be something. Just what it was he never knew.....So we'll just learn to love our sorrow." Ouch.

ON a high note, I have seen them about three times and they put on a FABULOUS live show. Todd Park Mohr is a phenomenal guitarist. They absolutely rock live and not that it's heavy, it's just really pure. They tour a lot and I venture, to them it's just about the music. It shows. Not a lot of happiness on this album, but we can all relate to it. And that's what good music does to me.

5 out of 5 stars This is the SY record to discover.......2007-07-05

WHen someone tells me they never saw the big deal with Sonic Youth I always throw on Sister. Yeah, I know Daydream is great but I always thought this was their masterpiece. It put both their musicianship and recording prowess together in one disk.

Sister was recorded on old tube boards and you can really tell by the soft tones and warm fuzz. Feels like a wish coming true.

5 out of 5 stars Unique sound, unique songs.......2007-03-08

Back in the days where Sonic Youth didn't have to use a specific song structure or strings arrangement. It's everything. The whole sound, the songs, the environment it creates. This is one of the best cds I own.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything.......2006-05-15

While Sonic Youth have earned their share of detractors over the past couple decades, there's no denying that they've been responsible for some of the most fiercely individualistic music of that time, and those who love their occasionally inviting, occasionally ugly, but always intriguing sound should find Sister to be among their best efforts. After several albums seemingly devoted to freaking out as many people as possible, Sister was the Youth's most blatant early flirtation with conventional rock songwriting. It was still a far cry from the mature, almost pastoral work of the band's current autumnal phase, but Sister saw the Youth moving past the self-consciously avant-garde stylings of their early albums to create a much more accessible, immediate, and listenable sound.

Where Confusion is Sex, Bad Moon Rising, and EVOL were as much curiosities as they were works of art, Sister was probably the first Sonic Youth album where the songwriting spoke for itself, succeeding solely as music rather than as a middle finger to the establishment. There were some good songs on their old albums, no doubt, but it was here, unhindered by the quasi-musical experiments that characterized much of their earlier career, that the Youth came up with a batch of great songs like they would on Daydream Nation, Goo, Dirty, and the more recent Murray Street and Sonic Nurse.

Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo still took the lead with their odd mix of fragile microtonalities and dizzying noise storms, but this time around their patented form of guitar abuse was married to memorable melodies and even the occasional hook. Steve Shelley, whom I've long considered to be a tragically underrated drummer, was also in extremely fine form here; the more I listen to this album, the more I appreciate how his beats drive the songs' peaks and valleys in intensity rather than just mirroring them. For an illustration, just check out Stereo Sanctity, where his drumming is all pounding aggression in the louder moments before turning to jazzy precision for the quieter ones. While a lot is made of Thurston and Lee's innovations on guitar, Steve's constant powerful presence on the kit does just as much, if not more, to separate Sonic Youth from pretty much every other underground band of their time. If you listen to SY immediately before or after listening to say, the Pixies, the difference is that much more pronounced.

Foreshadowing the more rocking direction they'd take as the '80's turned into the '90's, the band was at its best on this album when it ratcheted up the intensity-propulsive, swirling tracks like Catholic Block, Stereo Sanctity, and White Cross are all quintessential Sonic Youth songs that helped write the book on alternative rock well before Nirvana made the label fashionable. That said, the band also impresses with slower, looser pieces like the brilliant opener Schizophrenia and Kotton Krown, which turn the volume down a couple notches but sacrifice none of the complexity and noisy experimentation. Even Pacific Coast Highway, one of the obligatory Kim Gordon songs, is excellent in spite of her, erm, limitations as a vocalist, with feedback-drenched guitars scraping in the background behind her freaky, half-sung-half-spoken mantras. Just for good measure, they included a cover as well, in the form of an eyebrow-singeing version of Crime's Hotwire my Heart that gives you a nice idea of what the Youth would've sounded like if they'd taken a more straightforward route. But of course, straightforwardness has never really been SY's emphasis, and we fans are all the better off for it.

3 out of 5 stars and do you like to ...?.......2006-01-27

Firstly, CATHOLIC BLOCK (I'VE GOT A) is one of their best songs, by far. there are other great songs on here as well, COTTON CROWN, HOT WIRE MY HEART, SCHIZOPHRENIA, TUFF GNARL, and PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY all come to mind. but generally this album is not that listenable to me as a whole because of the monotonous overly-punk-styled vocals. still, it's a good album. just not where i'd introduce someone to SY.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Album From An Incredible Band..........2005-12-07

Sonic Youth is one of the more influential and revered bands of the last 20 years. They are rightfully known as the Godfathers of Indie Rock. I can think of no other band that has been consistently putting out quality music for as long as Sonic Youth. Some bands manage to string together 2 or 3 good albums, but then tend to fade into obscurity, break-up, or start to suck. Amazingly, Sonic Youth have yet to succumb to any of those fates. They have had the occasional slump (the mid-to-late 90's), yet they are still here- producing worthwhile, quality albums. In my mind, their creative peak was the late 80's; when they put out the amazing trilogy of `Evol', `Sister', and `Daydream Nation'. I love this band and own every single one of their albums. That being said, `Sister' is my favorite.
`Sister' was initially released on SST records in 1987, and in my mind stands as the quintessential Sonic Youth release. There is a mythic, mystical undercurrent pulling the listener thru this delicious album. It is hard to quantify and explain. The guitar interplay of Thurston and Lee is something special- at times beautifully melodic, dissonant, violent, loving, and ethereal. These songs really speak to me.
This awesome work open with `Schizophrenia' (you really need to hear this song live sometime). I like how both Kim and Thurston share vocals on this track- something they should do more often, which they do in fact numerous times on `Sister'. Lyrically this is one of Sonic Youth's finest efforts, which should be no surprise to anyone when they realize that the Youth were heavily into Philip K. Dick at the time this album was written. Feelings of insanity, isolation, loneliness, chaos, and love pervade `Sister'- for these were all themes with which Dick was intimately familiar. A number of Sonic Youth's best tracks appear on this album. `Stereo Sanctity' is dissonant, delirious, and wonderful. This is followed by the reflective and mysterious `Pipeline/ Kill Time', which makes use of Lee's poetic lyrics, rolling drums, and incredible feedback control. After this amazing track comes `Tuff Gnarl', which ends with a devastating and divinely dissonant guitar frenzy. Maintaining the momentum, next up is `Pacific Coast Highway', one of Kim Gordon's best tracks- she sounds genuinely scary at the outset, which serves as a perfect lead-in to more guitar beauty. This stretch here- tracks 4 through 7, marks one of the best I have heard on ANY album.
`Cotton Crown' follows `Hot Wire My Heart' (which I could've done without). `Cotton Crown' is the closest thing Sonic Youth has to a love song, but don't let that deter you- I HATE love songs. The instrumental section in the middle of this song is a thing of beauty and power. Dissonant guitars have never sounded so soothing (with the exception of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless). `White Cross' follows this gem, ending the album on a rocking note. `Master-Dik' actually ends this version of `Sister' (I don't think it was on the original SST version). `Master-Dik' is a VERY tongue-in-cheek Sonic Youth take on Hip Hop, complete with lots of distorted guitars and even a KISS sample.
If you are only familiar with recent Sonic Youth, and you find yourself wishing they would rock out more, than you need this album. This is probably the Youth's most rocking album. The guitar is blistering throughout. And all though it is blistering, distorted, and dissonant; it is highly soothing and quite trance inducing at times. The guitar interplay here paved the way for the amazing sonics exhibited on their next album, the undisputed masterpiece- `Daydream Nation'.
The song writing on `Sister' is some of their best- cosmically poetic and mystically enchanting. This, in conjunction with the otherworldly music make for a fascinating listen. If you like Sonic Youth, but have yet to get this album, you must do so immediately. If you are only familiar with major label Youth (post-Goo), then you must IMMEDIATELY get this incredible album. And finally, if you are curious about Sonic Youth, but have yet to delve into their daunting catalogue, this might not be the best place to start. `Goo' & `Daydream Nation' might be better jumping off points. However, if you are musically adventurous, a guitarist, or a fan of interesting rock, you will most likely love this wonderfully dissonant work. After many years, and hundreds upon hundreds of CD's and vinyl albums, `Sister' remains one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars great music.......2006-08-21

We love the music from the movie and this CD is great. My 4 year old granddaughter listens to it when ever she can. She loves it.

4 out of 5 stars You just wish there was more of these singing nuns singing.......2005-06-26

I have to believe the chief reason for picking up this album is to get the songs that the nuns sing in "Sister Act." The appeal here is what I think of as the Joe Piscopo approach to singing songs when he played Frank Sinatra on "Saturday Night Love." Piscopo would either take a regular Frank Sinatra hit (e.g., "Witchcraft") and turn it into a heavy metal/rock song, or he would take a popular rock song (e.g., Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run") and do it in Sinatra's classic saloon style. That is essentially what we have here when the nuns led by Sister Delores take a "traditional" church song such as "Hail Holy Queen" and do it R&B style or when they take a song like "I Will Follow Him" and turn the opening into a hymn of devotion. In case you do not read the notes, Andrea Robinson is the soloist who does the power solos in grand Marni Nixon style for Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena).

The bad news is that they cannot fill up a complete album of such songs, even if you throw the songs from "Sister Act 2" into the mix as well, so there are two additional components to this soundtrack. First there are original classic R&B songs from the likes of Etta James ("Roll With Me Henry"), Fontella Bass ("Rescue Me"), and Dee Dee Sharp ("Gravy"). Then there are a couple of instrumental tracks written by Marc Shaiman which are really around just to fill up the album. The best of that bunch is "Getting into the Habit," but even that one is not going to stand up against even the weakest of the singing tracks (which would be "My God," which is cute lyrically but not as much fun as the other "covers" in terms of the harmonious singing raising the rafters).

The goal here is to be able to listen to the songs without having to watch the movie, so that you can sing along with the ladies in the car or while doing work around the house. These are infectious versions of these songs and the idea of investing secular pop songs with religious fervor is rather appealing. Besides, not only do you have Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Najimy singing, but also the late great Mary Wickes. For the record, the other ladies of the choir are Ellen Albertini Dow, Carmen Zapata, Pat Crawford Brown, Prudence Wright Holmes, Georgia Creighton, Susan Johnson, Ruth Kobart, Susan Browning, Darlene Koldenhoven, Sheri Izzard, Edith Diaz and Beth Fowler (yes, the one you see signing in the movie are the ones actually doing the singing on the soundtrack, which I also think is pretty neat).

all off the songs are great. they are either a rock n roll song or a techo aerobic song. great for wurking out to.

3 out of 5 stars interesting mix.......2005-09-30

a little techno,a little metal.but not good techno, and definately not good metal.a few decent cuts(utah saint in particular)
i bought this Cd to use in my Kickboxing class to train to,thinking from other reviews that the music was metal with techno influence or visa versa.but actually the first half of the album is electronic and the second half metal.and again, neither genre represented very well.

5 out of 5 stars A Kick Ass Soundtrack!.......2005-08-06

For all you people out there who liked the music from the movie, get this soundtrack! It is full of cool songs. It remains pretty heavy throughout, but it also has a heavenly moment courtesy of Orbital. Definitely worth it. Also, if you like this soundtrack, check out Mortal Kombat More Kombat and Mortal Kombat Annihilation. They are all just as good.

I loved the movie and I have 4 out of the 5 available CD's. I've never played the game since I don't own a Playstation or an x-box (gasp)but the soundtracks are great. My favourite tracks are Utah Saints on the theme from Mk and The immortals mix. I often listen to the cd's while I'm working out....and it makes me really work up a sweat. So go ahead and buy....I don't think you'll regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Nice singers, good for nostalgic Soul fans!.......2007-03-06

This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any CD collection.......2007-03-04

I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

I bought the Cornelius Bros.& Sister Rose first album on vinyl back in 1972. It was one of the few albums produced that didn't have a bad cut on it. The majority of the songs on this CD were on that album, but it just makes me miss the first album all the more. Why hasn't Rhino or someone else picked up on this group and re-released the first album on CD?

Influenced by New York punk bands like the Ramones and Dictators, as well as by traditional heavy metal ensembles, Twisted Sister created brash, simple songs that buzzed with subversive energy, giving the band the appeal of bad-boy cartoon characters. Their third album, Stay Hungry, featured the classic rebel anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It" as well as more uptempo tracks like "Burn in Hell" and "S.M.F." (which, in true metal fashion, stands for "Sick Motherfucker"). No one disputes Twisted Sister's competence level. Simply put, they couldn't play well enough to save their five-year recording career, but frontman Dee Snider's outrageous stage presence and accidentally hilarious lyrics ensured that their time in the limelight was thoroughly entertaining. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Twisted..........2007-07-09

Can't really explain why I'm tinto these guys since I'm primarilly into Hip Hop but I grew up on their videos!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Knock It Until You've Tried It!!!!.......2007-02-15

You know, it's funny. Most of the people I've run into who trash Twisted Sister do so not so much b/c of the music, but the image. I myself was at one time guilty of this. But if you can move beyond the hideous make-up/costumes and the fact that the band only take themselves seriously about half the time, then you'll discover a truly underappreciated classic in Stay Hungry. TS' music is not about complex song structures or virtuoso musicianship. It's just good, clean and straightforward hard rockin fun, and that is something that is sorely missing in today's music. While the image is a mix of shock rock (Alice Cooper) and glam (New York Dolls), the music is more akin to early speed metal and NWOBHM. And while the songs are consistently hard and heavy, you may be suprised by the level of melodic content that exists as well. Dee Snider, for instance, may not be on the level of vocal gods like Dio, Halford, Dickinson, etc. but he is by far a capable singer and his lyrics are even quite intelligent at times. It should also be noted that the vast majority of the material is written by Mr. Snider alone. Anyway, give Stay Hungry a try. Get over your obsession with expecting music (especially metal) to always be serious and technically impressive, and then sit back and enjoy a solid set of classic metal anthems.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Crap! Forgot all about this one!.......2006-10-03

I had this casette way back when. I was a juvenile rocker when it came out, I was young and dumb and embarrassingly goofy. Now I'm almost 40 and listen to a very wide variety of music. I happened to be at a friend's house and saw that he had this CD. I played it and couldn't believe the A+ songs on it. I'd always remembered Twisted Sister as some sort of gimmicky glam band that I'd listened to as a child.

I still think "We're not Gonna Take It" is a bit over the top, but "Burn in Hell" and "I Wanna Rock" are rock solid songs. "Stay Hungry" reminded me of Y&T - and I rate Dave Meniketti as one of the greatest. "The Price" is an achingly ripping ballad. What vocals!

Well, I didn't skip through any of the songs (at the friend's house) and I bought the CD from Amazon 2 days later. This one only got better with age.

4 out of 5 stars My very first album.......2006-09-24

This was my very first album I got when I was like 5 years old as a kid in the 80s. Whether it's their hilarously chessey music videos or their gruesome appearance, I still kept a morbid curiosity interest in Twisted Sister to this day and last night saw Dee Snider sing on TV. Dee Snider is a big celebrity and actually I think he has pretty decent taste, if only their videos didn't date so bad. This contains a number of classic tracks like the itle track, We're Not Gonna Take It, Burn in Hell, The Beast and S.M.F. While the band may be unintentionally funny, the music works not only as a nostalgia trip but for Dee Snider's celebrity come back, coming off as bad bone Christian metal without being corny about it like Stryper. Yes, Dee Snider testified at the PMRC hearing that he's a Christian believe or not, and I've been attending church regularly lately so know for a fact that that is true. Take it with some self depricating humor because Dee Snider made a comeback in the late 90s and is still a big star.

5 out of 5 stars Stay Hungry (1984).......2006-09-01

While many people know Twisted Sister best, for "We're Got Gonna Take it" and "I Wanna Rock", they had more to offer than just those two songs. Stay Hungry is a very solid metal album. This is one of those albums that demands to be played loud. From the opener "Stay Hungry" through "S.M.F." the album never gets dull. Besides the obivious hits other highlights include the title track, The Price, Horror Teria, Don't Let Me Down, but the album as a whole is very enjoyable. It's to bad that they couldn't maintain their popularity after Stay Hungry, cause Twisted Sister was actually a pretty good band. This album deserves a spot in any reall rock n roll collection.

4 out of 5 stars Twisted Sister - 'Twisted Christmas' (Razor & Tie) .......2007-06-10

Review no. 60. I'll give this CD a four-star rating for effort alone. I mean, when I first heard about this ten track release in advance, I really didn't think that Dee Snider and crew could pull it off. Glad to see that I was wrong. Wanted to catch Twisted Sister last time they were in my town but I didn't get to go. If I ever get to see them again, I really would like to hear them perform one or two of these cuts even on a summer tour. Tunes I was impressed the most with were "Oh, Come All Ye Faithful", "White Christmas", "Silver Bells", the rocking "Deck The Halls" and "The Christmas Song". Personally, I think even patrons that don't usually like metal would enjoy this disc to some extent. A should-have.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this Christian music christmas album!!!.......2007-05-07

Twisted Sister BRINGS the christmas feeling year round. (This is a CD to be listened to at any time of the year.) When I listen to it, it makes me feel better. "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" are my favorite songs. Overall, it is an excellent CD. Now, if Twisted Sister would just make another Christian music christmas album for Christmas 2007, then I would be overjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-04-25

I think this album contains my favorite version of "O Come All Ye Faithful." Seriously.

4 out of 5 stars Yeah it's crazy, it's kooky, and it's twisted.......2007-02-15

The Good
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" starts off as if the group has softened in their old age. Eventually someone reminds them who they are and the Christmas classic gets pumped up. They even add a Ramones inspired section at the end. "O Come All Ye Faithful" sounds just like "We're Not Gonna Take It;" from the main riff to the note-for-note solo. Twisted Sister's version of "White Christmas" is a far cry from Bing Crosby's. The chugga-chugga riffing and blazing solos are just one of the many differences. A voice from the past is resurrected for the power ballad version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Dee Snider trades vocals with 80s metal queen Lita Ford on this one. It's almost as if "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" was meant to be a metal song. Everything just falls into place. "The Christmas Song" has sort of that "Burn in Hell" vibe to it.

The Bad
"Heavy Metal Christmas," set to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," is kind of lame as the 12 gifts are replaced with metal clichés.

The Verdict
Yeah it's crazy, it's kooky, and it's twisted, but it's also really fun and enjoyable for 80s metal fans.

What more can you expect from Sister Hazel? Every album I have purchased seems to become my favorite. Love all the songs, especially "Happy". I recommend this album to anyone young or old.

5 out of 5 stars timeless "put you in a great mood" beachhouse music.......2006-05-20

This thing is a work of art. Every summer since this album came out in '97 I get S.M.F. out and It immmediately puts a smile on peoples faces. This is an album you can play at a great early evening Avalon Deck Party/Cookout. Starfish is a fantatic jam song. Cereline is soulful. and well...All for You is a powerhouse singalong. These guys have another album released in 2002/03 called "Chasing Daylight" that is nearly as perfect if you need a pickup and a smile. get em both and see em live.

5 out of 5 stars Sister Hazel ---Sleeper Band.......2006-01-03

If you have never heard Sister Hazel, you are in for a treat. Soulful music that speaks to everyone's heart. And if you have never seen them in concert, you are surely missing out. There is an energy in this band that revives the weary soul. Imagine 6000 people singing every song at the top of their lungs.
Sister Hazel is an Everyman band. I challenge you to find one song that does not truly move you or that you cannot relate with.

My vote is to put this band on the cover of Rolling Stone!

4 out of 5 stars This Is Familiar.......2005-09-24

Yeah! Hazelnuts rocks and so does this cd. This cd is for people who like folk rock and if you're looking for a great folk rock album this one's it. Their message and vibe are powerfully attractive. I'm not gonna fool yeah there are a couple of skippers, if your new to this. If you keep listening to it a couple times through you'll eventually love the album.

5 out of 5 stars A whole disc.......2004-09-22

Usually one or two albums a year make to an elite status on my CD rack -- this is one of them. This CD isn't anything ground-breaking, but it is one of those rare albums where every song is solid. A great CD to listen to from start to finish -- which is what makes it rare and elite.

Sister Hazel is a band certainly worthy of picking up an album or two.
