Album Description

The debut solo release from the lead vocalist/primary songwriter of The Rainmakers.

"The Beginner," features Bob Walkenhorst paring down his signature elemental song arrangements to a skeletal acoustic guitar, bass, and drums, most often played by his one-man-band. Harmonica is the lead instrument of choice on this release with the notable exception of a honking sax solo on "Jan Vermeer," and a lead guitar solo on the "J-Walkers." Vocal harmonies appear on only one song, "Just Leaving." From the sparse instrumentation to the early-60's style extreme-stereo production, the overall sound of "The Beginner" is as much about what has NOT been recorded, as it is about what you do hear.

The humor and irony that have been the trademarks of Walkenhorst's songwriting in The Rainmakers are abundant on "The Beginner." However, rather than being applied to social and political subjects, Walkenhorst's new songs are about more universal themes of love, work, patriotism, age, and escape. The dense opinionated word avalanche of his Rainmakers songs has been refined and reduced to choice phrases, delivered with a lighter touch and a stronger sense of melody.

Like Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous," "The Beginner" is Bob Walkenhorst's love letter to rock n' roll. Echoes of garage bands learning Beatles songs, lonely boys in rooms with acoustic guitars, two minute blasts of youth coming from a blown car-radio speaker, are caught in an over-the-shoulder backwards glance at, not only where he has been, but where he is coming from.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great singer/songwriter.......2005-02-17

Bob Walkenhorst is a wonderfully talented singer/songwriter/musician. The songs on this album tend to be personal, introspectively looking at the self rather than looking outward and commenting on the world. Musically, it's somewhat reminicent of the Beatles. A great album, and a worthy addition to the music collection of anyone who appreciates a good singer/songwriters.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginner - Bob Walkenhorst.......2004-12-08

I saw Bob play two hours one evening in the bookstore coffeeshop and fell in love with him and his music all over again. This is music you can listen to all night long, over and over - not one song misses. Look a little deeper past the music to the lyrics and you hear the story of a haunted man ... this music is destined to become classic. Bob, I don't think it will take until 2300.

5 out of 5 stars If only they knew..........2004-10-20

I've always told people unfamiliar with this man that if you looked up "Rock and Roll" in the dictionary, it would read, "See Rainmakers."

Bob strips it down on "The Beginner" with songs you'll just have to hear.

He might be 60 before receiving the respect and appreciation he deserves, but we can wait.

Go buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The best undiscovered songwriter in America.......2004-08-29

Walkenhorst has the best introspective, witty, and enjoyable lyrics in the last 15 years. Forget Dylan, Springsteen, Joel--the ex-frontman for the underrated Rainmakers plays trump card after trump card, carrying the narrative with his unique voice and style. Very easy to recommend "The Beginner". The songs are fun, thoughtful, and rhythmic.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tunes and Lyrics - A Joy to Listen To.......2004-03-06

It doesn't seem to matter whether he records with the Rainmakers or solo, Walkenhorst continues to make some of the most intelligent and enjoyable rock around. "Just Leaving" is the real album highlight -- one of those great tuneful anthems with savvy lyrics. The only problem with the song is that it's only two minutes long. But it's one of those tunes you love immediately, kind of like Joe Grushecky's "Chain Smoking" on his amazing "American Babylon" CD. As rave up as "Just Leaving" is, "The Day We Hung Up The Flag" is one of the most touching (and tuneful) patriotic songs for peace in recent years. Every song on the CD is excellent in terms of artisty. Whether or not you'll like a particular song depends on your individual taste. But I defy anybody not to like those two songs.

This band has great talent but the album was totaly flat their intent is noticable but not felt, the musical arrangement was horrible and i was REALLY LET DOWN,especially for the price i paid i would have been better spending it on any other album. I give them 1 star for effort but thats about all they will get out of me.I expected alot more especially since they talked about the "OLD SCHOOL SALSA FEEL" it felt alot like reggeaton beat...the same beat over and over and over.

The Primary 5 was formed in March 2003 by ex-Soup Dragons and Teenage Fanclub drummer Paul Quinn and collaborator/guitarist Ryan Currie. 2004 saw the completion of The Primary 5 debut album "North Pole." Collecting numerous accolades along the way in both the UK and US press, this resulted in the band supporting rock legends Arthur Lee and Love on their last ever UK tour. "Go!" follows on from where "North Pole" left off, but the songwriting and musicianship shows greater maturity whilst acknowledging its classic influences without resorting to outright plagiarism. Sounds of the summer in the vein of Teenage Fanclub, Gene Clark and The Beach Boys an absolute joy to behold! Includes contributions from Teenage Fanclub members Norman Blake (vox/guitars) and Raymond McGinley (guitars). In the absence of any new Teenage Fanclub record, this is as close as you'll get! The Cyanide Valentine's "Let It Rot" is a pretty good album with three great electroclash songs on it. The rest are good too, but these are obvious standouts. These songs are - "Natural Born Liar", "You Don't Really Love Me" and "You Are The Focus" (and possibly "Freaks" and "Desipicable Whore"). I don't know who the singer is, but he definitely fits the style well. I suppose a good way to describe it is that it's rough but sounds like it's electronic at the same time. The musicianship is basically garage rock with some electronic bits thrown in, and the instrumentation is pretty good. The production could use a bit of work, though. Overall I think a lot of people would like it, but it's mainly for genre fans. Recommended!

I listen to this at work and many of my coworkers stop to ask me what I'm playing. This CD is art. The piano music is mesmerizing. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars 44 minutes of pure bliss. A+.......2005-01-07

Soroush's music is a symphony of sound and melodies that needs to be enjoyed in its entirety. His music is uplifting. It is the kind of music that enhances the mood in a gathering and lifts the human spirit on a long drive. Soroush blends the piano melodies that originate from his Persian soul with modern harmonies and South American instrumentation to bring a sound that is unique and familiar to the heart. It is rich in variety and continuous in theme. It is a stream that starts from an apex and flows into the sea and along the way he takes us through a journey of waterfalls and lagoons. The Artist walks a fine line that only the greats can follow. Hopefully this work is a prelude to other great works.

Every song brought back great memories and "Ah Leah" was the pinnacle. The super low price was an added bonus. Any Donnie Iris fan would love this CD. 5 out of 5 stars Serene Piano Music That Soothes.......2007-03-08

I first heard of this album from a friend who played the sheet music in our Primary as prelude and postlude music. "I am a Child of God" and "Oh, What do you do in the Summertime" are my favorite tracks, but that may just be because they are the ones I first experienced. I also really enjoy "My Heavenly Father Loves Me". That is my favorite Primary song, and the addition of a sonorous and grounding cello through parts of the arrangement compliments the lilting melody played in the upper registers of the piano. I finally bought the album as a Christmas gift to myself and my family. My two little ones, ages 2 and 5, really respond to the lullaby quality of the tones that help to invite the Spirit of God. My husband is often gone from home as he works full-time and is also a full-time student- so I listen to it nearly every day, and it soothes my frazzled, "stay-at-home mom" nerves ("Music soothes the savage Mom"). I definitely recommend this album and am looking forward to giving it as a gift to my family and friends. I hope it will do as much for them as it does for me. I have not heard other albums of Paul Cardall, so I cannot speak to how this album relates to his other works, but I look forward to having that opportunity in the future as I am able to purchase other albums. This album alone definitely encourages me to take the plunge and purchase other, unheard music by the same composer/arranger.

        Album Description

These works by Cindy Cox take the listener on an experiential journey affecting the mind, spirit and body. The rite of passage begins with Geode (1996) for flute, clarinet, cello, percussion and piano, a piece of technical and formal prowess that carries the listener first into the presence of an object of mind, a geode—something to capture the attention for the experience to follow. Like crystals forming around a dirty speck of earth, the shimmering glockenspiel, the high winds, and piano tremolos dance about the binding cello of the second movement. Indicating its bright features and high registers, the score is marked “sparkling.” This movement, nearly twice as long as the outer two, provides the central fractal for the piece's larger inflorescence, which is replicated in the work's overall structure. Here, Cox balances the piece's formality with a demonstration of her facility to modulate complex patterns of melody, pitch, timbre and resonance, through a loom work of breathtaking technique. As the cello's shuttle gathers speed, the other instruments slow, their sparkling lyrici! sm caught in the warp and weft of a series of darker waves. As intimated, the outer movements frame the inner with sharp contrasts and share many formal parallels with each other. The first movement begins whimsically, full of irony, reminiscent of Klee or perhaps the more menacing Miro. The short, syncopated upward gestures are led by the bass clarinet. The cello joins in with pizzicato but ultimately leads the voices into a series of fractured and asymmetrical gestures that take all of them into the clarifying middle movement. The last movement is a palindrome of the first. Somehow the first movement's gags are inverted as well. The jokes aren't as funny having passed through the center of things. But they do shine. Ultimately, the journey is an inward descent that we might bring back that crystalline jewel through a recollection of our lost dream time. Finally, both the conscious and the unconscious minds are necessary and necessarily symbiotic in the attentive mind now called to attention. Columba aspexit (1995) for string quartet is based upon a chant by Hildegard von Bingen, a twelfth-century abbess, who transmuted the hallucinatory visions of her childhood into an art of gnosis, mysticism and spirituality. Her oracular painting, music and writing became so renowned for wisdom that popes and kings across medieval Europe sought her counsel. She dictated her visions and prophecies in a large volume called the Symphonia armonie celestium relationum (Symphony of the Celestial Harmonies). Among the collection's fourteen chants, “Columba aspexit” presents a fantastic and symbolic vision of Saint Maximinus as a celebrant at Mass. Roughly translated, the text opens:
        Through the crosses
        in the window,
        the holy dove
        gazed upon
        a contemplative Maximinus,
        anointing as with oils
        his temples,
        from whence spring
        the jewel of purest heart
        like the sun
        burning its gloam. . . .

—from “Columba aspexit” by Hildegard von Bingen The music's ecstatic and transcendent character is achieved through the combinatory effects of its tremendous range, references to the major mode, and the special work of a personal elegy. Cox captures the unique melodic material of each section and releases its breadth, scope, imagery and inward spirituality. Apropos of Maximinus in his devotion, the first movement opens meditatively, slow, still, with a high-pitched violin in a disjunct theme (not based upon the chant), which is marked “elegy” and dedicated to Elisabeth Terrell Cox-Hurst, the composer's child who died at birth. Cox weaves this theme in and out, purifying it in the crucible of Hildegard's hermetic chant. The pathos of the music rests in this deep collaboration, tragedy made numinous with understanding. The contrasting, active chant appears shortly after, and is elaborated and treated in canon (a kind of strict imitation between members of the quartet).
