This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.
These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

SUBTERRANEOUS is The Movement! .......2007-04-04
No Doubt: The MOST Under-rated, Under-played, Under-promoted, Un-known, Un-heard of, Un-seen album that I can even think of in THE UNDERGOUND. In the spirit of BDP (KRS-One for those that dont know), 3rd Eye Vision (Heiroglyphics), Lupe Fiasco and Mr. West Himself (to add a few well known and, in their own time, underrated, Highly Intelligent artists), One.Be.Lo (aka: OneManArmy) front man for the S-U-B-T-E-R-R-A-N-E-O-U-S Crew (and yes, they do it the best!), one-half of the would-be legendary Binary Star (Senim Silla is also the bomb, check him out on Sleeper Cell Records), one-half of the would-be classic Trackazoids, and the One Man who "the only paraphanelia [he] need to rock the spot is One Hip-Hop Fan, and it dont stop. Without a Mic, without a Beat with no DJ. Without a Pen/Pad, without a Blunt or Fifth of E.J. Without a doubt [he] still turn it out without a delay. On the track [he'll] beat your whole team without a relay." Yes: Genius is the word you are looking for.
From the begining, Subterraneous has been a WaterWorld (Michigan, for the un-educated) staple. One.Be.Lo, Majestic Legend, Octane and Illite (whose album "Forgotten...Choosen" is also Tops), Decompose (unfortunately I have not had the pleasure to check out the new album "Decompositions"), Kodac, Dj Phrikshum (if you figure out who that is, I'll give you a cookie!) and the Entire Sub Crew, who you may not love but you know Loves You, have been producing albums, rockin shows at the Blind Pig (another Ann Arbor staple), teachin the kids what Hip-Hop should be, even keeping up with their academic pursuits (check out One.Be.Lo's Double-S-A.). Yes, the Can do it ALL.
If I were trapped on a desert island with only one CD...it would probably be Outkast, "ATLiens" (sorry, I'm a bad lier)...
BUT! If I could only listen to one Lable for the rest of my life...it would be the SUB.
Trust me. I've seen the man at the show, sharing the stage with RJD2, Blueprint, GhostFaceKillah, DEL (not no phoney phranchise!), and yes, I've even seen him steal the show!
I've seen him in the crowd, shakin the hands, dancin with the fans, givin props to those that deserve it, and kickin out those that deserve it as well! (please, dont drink and dance...its bad for everyone)

One Be Lo is hands down the most talented emcee out there. There is not a weak track on here. enecS eht Kcab, Deceptacons, and Rocketship are the standouts. I could easily have just listed three others tracks and been right.

i love this album.onebelo is one of my favorite indie artist,so when i received this as a b-day gift last year i knew i was in for a treat.this is what a concept album should sound like.there were no weak topics plus you can tell everything was well thought out.the production(mostly by himself & the trackezoids)compliments lo's liquid flow.i recomend this to any binary star fan or anyone just curious to who onebelo is.copp this,you won't regret it.

I was looking for a recording of Londonderry Air performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra/Eugene Ormandandy. After listening to several sample clips on this CD, I ordered it. The entire CD is beautiful and relaxing. It's become one of my favorites.

This is so funny! Like all the Forbidden Broadway cds, its another knock-out. I feel like such a crazy person when I am in the car driving and I just burst out laughing. Its great and a must have for any Forbidden Broadway fan.
Spoof Odessey worth the laughs!.......2002-04-14
I enjoyed "Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey." This recording has some truly genius material, and although these actors' impersonations of famous Broadway stars aren't as strong as they have been in the past, the CD has a lot to recommend it.
Particularly strong is Track 16, "Let's do an old fashioned show tune," featuring Elton John and Ethel Merman duking it out over AIDA, which Merman says is "putting everyone here through hell." Likewise, Track 15, "Let's Ruin Times Square Again," tickles my funny bone. Also wonderful are the satires of Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury, and the Full Monty; Gerard Alessandrini's done a tremendous job with these! In addition, this CD's introductory song is much stronger than those on the previous volumes of Forbidden Broadway. It really sets the tone for the best parts of this recording.
Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions, the first half of the CD is a bit thin, which is why I give this recording 3 out of 5 stars: Even though it entertains me, there's a lot I have to skip over. For example, the Liza Minelli spoof annoying (though, I admit, a little funny), and in the Music Man revival satire, their Robert Preston impersonator sounds *nothing* like the original. (In earlier recordings, the actors *did* sound like the people they claimed to be.)
The good news is that the CD has 30 tracks in all, so even though there are 13 that I dislike, I just love the rest... I do recommend it!
better to be "Lost in Space".......2001-12-31
First and foremost, this CD is really for diehard fans of Forbidden Broadway, those of us who want the good, the bad and the ugly on the cd rack. I was extremely unimpressed with the latest offering.
While I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some nice work, I don't know that Saturday Night Fiasco and Sondheim's Blues are sufficient to carry the rest of the tracks. Not much seems new or worse yet, important. Disney isn't new, nor is Les Miz. And while pointing out what is stale and pedestrian on Broadway was amusing on the last couple of releases, this Forbidden Broadway spoof clearly has joined the list of stale and pedestrian.
While there is some nice material on this disc, I really didn't laugh out loud, and that is why I have always bought these in the past.
If Alessandrini reduces the show to the same complaints of the same shows and then replaying lightly tweaked versions of past numbers, Trouble and Alan Cumming in Cabaret specifically, then he has himself is on the becoming a revival - and we know what he thinks of revivals.
The repeats might even be acceptable if there was something fresh in the perfomance, but both were done much better on their respective discs. I think Danny Gurwin is a great comedian, but he doesn't shine in either of these numbers. We also need a recording with no Ethel Merman or Liza numbers - give them a rest already. And why bring back Streisand with such a poor imitation? The earlier Barbara's were dead on vocal impressions as well as speech patterns. If you aren't going to improve on it, then don't drag it back out.
Alessandrini suggests that this is one of the best casts he has ever worked with. I don't know what he bases that on, but I beg to differ, either cast with Bryan Batt was significantly better, although they worked with fresh, clever material. Still, those recordings had verocious talent that brought Gerard's stinging wit to life for those of us who can't see every new production of FB.
Maybe it is time to go to off Broadway productions, or to the radio or the movies for some new ideas. Or else promise no references to the Gap, Disney, or Chorus Boys, (way over used on this recording), along with a Merman and Liza free season. Start from scratch. That might give us hope that Forbidden Broadway too might not be dead.
Stretched Thin.......2001-03-26
I just saw the stage production of Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. I agree with the other reviewers who feel that Alessandrini is no longer at the top of his game. Perhaps he should lay off for a year or three and let Broadway present new things for him to lampoon - as it always will.
The opening sequence is forced and unfunny, and clearly in place only to batter the listener with the "2001" theme. Unlike a previous reviewer, I found the Judi Dench parody hysterical, though I question its accuracy.
The "Trouble" parody is, as it always was, incomplete and thin. My dear friend John Kenrick (...) did a better job with it - included the segments of the original song that GA left out, and in a funnier fashion. The Cole Porter parody is marginally amusing, but the Brian Mitchell/Marin Mazzie parody is dead on the mark, and VERY funny.
The parody of Cheryl Ladd remains in the show, although she's no longer in "Annie Get Your Gun" - Reba McIntyre is now in the role. Similarly, he stabs at Alan Cumming, who is no longer playing the Emcee. These numbers, while funny, lack punch. On the other hand, he once again skewers long time target Patti LuPone with an hysterical new parody of Being Alive. I suppose she's innately funnier, after all these years, than Alan Cumming, who is, after all, a relative newcomer.
The Rocky Horror parody is amusing, and the observation that sex has moved off 42nd Street and onto the Broadway stage is not without merit. The Beauty parody is amusing, and apt, but as has already been noted, GA has been clobbering us with the Disnification of Broadway for years now. I suppose he finds some glee in the fading success of this particular show.
I must say that while Gurwin is not the greatest singer, "Sondheim's Blues" is the most brilliant piece I've heard from Alessandrini in years. It's absolutely dead on. The friends I was with had never seen nor heard "Follies" and completely missed the point, but I was in stitches.
The "10 Years More" (which does not appear on this album, but remains in the show) has really begun to wear thin, especially with the closing this year of Cats and Miss Saigon. The Cameron Macintosh British mega-musicals are finally releasing their grip on Broadway, and this isn't as funny any more.
Broadway, despite the naysayers, will never die... and apparently, neither will Forbidden Broadway. I don't think it should - but I do think it needs a rest.
Do the Math.......2001-03-15
Four CDs cover the first 20 Years of Forbidden Broadway, Gerard Alessandrini's viciously witty satire of New York Theatre. The last year has seen Three new CDs, FB "Cleans Up Its Act" "20th Anniversary Edition" and now "2001 a Spoof Odyssey". Do the math.
Alessandrini is running out of ideas, and is spreading the remaining ones too thin. . Sanitized Time Square - Been there. Disnified Broadway - Done that, and so many times. Asinine casting faux pas, plotless pointless set-monster musicals, and Ethel Merman and Liza. We've heard it all before - and last time, it was funnier.
Now normally when a writer (or director or actor) has truly entertained me on numerous occasions, I'll forgive the odd show that disappoints. This would be the case here except for two things: Alessandrini is in the vicious parody business - he's never spared anyone else Besides, if he's going to actually include couplets like: "If lyrics are no longer witty... Then I don't want to go " he's inviting the pans.
When you hear the AIDA lampoon, you'll be reminded of the dim bulb in Cyrano de Bergerac who taunts the hero with the brilliant witticism: Your nose is very large
Yes, there are a few true Forbidden Broadway tracks on Spoof Odyssey. Dame Judi Dench singing "Why can't Americans do theatre like the Brits?" (with apologies to My Fair Lady), I Hate Ben (with apologies to Kiss Me Kate) and about 1/3 of "Let's Ruin Time Square Again" (no apologies necessary to Rocky Horror which understands how easy it is for good parody to go bad). Oh yes, there is one absolutely true Forbidden Broadway track: TROUBLE - yes, the same Trouble from Volume 3 which was just re-released on the 20th Anniversary compilation - and it's back again with a more hackneyed Robert Preston impersonation and all of 4 words changed. Granted it's one of the better bits, more worthy of rerunning than say, referring to Miss Saigon as Viet-Numb, but oh, he reran that gag too

'The Awesome Power Of A Fully Operational Mothership' was one of only four George Clinton projects during the 1990's.This was during that period where Clinton was deeply emmersed in the alternative rock set of the day,appearing at places like the Lollapalooza Festival,in articles in MOJO magaize and being sampled (and paid heavy tribute to) by just about every rapper and hip hop artist under the sun.So T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M has a 32 member band of P-Funk all stars along for the ride;Clinton even goes as far as including a numbered list of each band member that has a small water color painting of each of them in the liner notes (the corrosponding name to number appears in the insert).That being said T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M seems like more of a presentation piece then Hey Man, Smell My Finger and in many ways it is.Musically "If Anybody Wants To Get Funked Up" sets the tone;this music is NOT built on samplers and sequencers but George Clinton certainly does his best to get the P-Funk all stars to sound as if it is.Most of the music is set up to make Clinton sound like he's "down" with the G-Funk style of Dr.Dre or what Ice Cube was doing at the time.So T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M is certainly very hip-hop orineted.Still this includes some clever songs such as "Mathematics",which uses clever wordplay to describe a love affair as a financial equasion,full of Clintons singular wit.And Charlie Wilson throws some strong and heavy funk flavors on the lively "New Spaceship".On "Rock The Party"","Get Your Funk On" and the title cut George and his band give it there all on songs that explore a vivic psychedelic landscape with hot horns and guitars before moving onto a reprise of the first song.Nontheless T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M suffers from the same problem Clinton's albums had since 1984-too many of the songs rely on jamming and random singing and chanting,as if that is what funk is in the first place.So much of it just goes on forever and after awhile all starts to sound somewhat alike.T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M is definately the product of the mid 1990's funk revival when the classic albums were being reissued and so many artists like George Clinton felt the need to contribute new material like this to the brew.If you are a P-Funk completist you'll need this;it is by no means terrible.If you are a little more finnicky about your funk and don't like it when it relys too much on the sound of contemporary hip-hop then T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M may not be the best place to go.Depends on which variety of THE BOMB you prefer-it's all up to you.

I had purchased this album when it was first released. It is quite dissapointing, but a few songs were listenable *for the time*.
He Could've Done Better!.......2006-02-25
This is not the typical George Clinton that I'm used to hearing!
The only standout songs are "If Anybody Gets Funked Up" and "Funky Kind". It sounds like George and the band were tired from all that Mothership touring from the 70's.

I'll have to give this a 5 star because it is an overall excellent album and did not get the props it deserves. I recommend it to all P-funk fans. The single "Anybody Get Funked Up" is a good dance number. Hip shaking music to be exact. I love Belita Woods voice. "Summer Swim" should be called "Aqua Boogie" part 2 since they are singing about Booty @ the beach. My favorite is "Underground Angel" it has that "FUNKADELIC" over/undertone. You won't be disappointed.
More than a little Funky.......2005-02-08
If funk were made of strawberries and bananas I'd be drinking a lot of smoothies. This album is simply great. It's everything a 20-something college kid likes about Hip-Hop, Funk, and any kind of good music rolled into one album. It's really smart music too. Hard as Steel is brilliantly funny without being too corny, and Underground Angel is amazing. BUY THIS.

Superb Early Music. Buy It........2005-12-13
'The Art of Courtly Love' is a two CD set, condensed from a three LP album performed by The Early Music Consort of London. I know less than I would like about early music, considering how much I enjoy it, but one very important thing I do know is that the director of this recording, David Munrow was, until his untimely death, the big man in early music.
One of the many things I especially like about this collection is that by showcasing a lot of vocal music, the tinny quality of a lot of early music is moved to the background. Antother thing I like is the fact that one can plainly distinguish secular from liturgical music by listening carefully to these selections. The biggest differences I see are the appearance of percussion instruments and male / female duets.
One reviewer commented on the quality of the notes. I agree they are good, but only about average for an old music offering by a major label.
Highly recommended to all who like early music.

I bought this when the album was first released. Even though scholarship has advanced, and it can be argued that Munrow's interpretations are dated, what has been lost over the years is the joy in performing this music. Many modern performances are ponderous and much, much too serious. But David Munrow found this music as a wonderous discovery. Through albums such as this one, he released into the open air music that had been locked away, languishing in the libraries for years, trotted out occasionally for a scholarly study, and then tucked back on the shelves. Munrow's enthusiasm for this music is evident in this collection, and his performances make them walk - no, dance - in the open air once more. This album is beautifully performed. I hope the notes in the CD are as good as the ones in my original release.
In 1974, I had the great pleasure of meeting David Munrow and the other members of the Early Music Consort, and was blown away with that enthusiasm and unselfishness, their willingness to discuss their work - I remember Munrow trading recorder performance tips with a friend of mine - and Munrow's truly amazing store of energy. He radiated! : -)
Outdated but Still Rivetingly Interesting.......2005-05-01
This 2-CD boxed set is the digital version of a 3-LP box from 1973 and was reissued in 1996 as part of the edition with which EMI/Virgin celebrated the twentieth anniversary of David Munrow’s unfortunate demise. The recordings, made at London’s prestigious Abbey Road studios, are digitally remastered to a very high standard, so that I found myself enjoying them via headphones more than via loudspeakers, something which is pretty unusual with CDs from the old analogue days. The two discs contains no less than some 156 minutes (51 tracks) of absolutely fascinating music. The first part is devoted to Guillaume Machault’s songs, works which can be dated around 1350 to 1360. The second part of the programme is concerned with the so-called avantgarde from Avignon (including names such as Matteo da Perugia), composers who wrote for esoteric circles around 1380 to 1410. And the third part (the third LP of the original) is devoted to fifteenth-century music from the court of Burgundy, the two great composers here being Dufay and Binchois.
Of course, David Munrow’s performances, fascinating and rivetingly interesting as they are, were shaped by his own interests and research at the time, and the booklet notes point out that since then “scholarship and performance practices have moved on healthily”, which I interpret to mean that today nobody would dream of performing this music the way Munrow did: for instance, he has most of the songs accompanied by a whole plethora of ancient instruments, although today it is generally agreed that works from this period should be sung unaccompanied or with minimal instrumental support. Munrow also performs some of the songs as purely instrumental pieces, a legitimate decision perhaps. Munrow also uses the two countertenors James Bowman and Charles Brett for many of the songs, and not everyone will appreciate being bombarded with their somewhat forced androgynous falsetto for nearly three hours; personally, it was the singing of Martyn Hill, tenor, and Geoffrey Shaw, baritone, which delighted my ear during these sessions. Along with the instruments, of course: slide trumpet, cornett, shawm, crwth, fiddle, rebec, citole and so on, plus several tracks with the amazing Christopher Hogwood playing an organ that sounds, at least, very old – unfortunately, the otherwise good liner notes give no details concerning the instruments used.
The Old French texts are printed in full with English translations, so it is possible to follow every nuance. Exceptionally good value for money! – For more historically-informed performances of music of this kind, I suggest searching names such as Gothic Voices, Hilliard Ensemble or Binchois Consort.

Lovely, beautiful, amazing, charming, and vital. I'll not replicate the previous reviewer, though my favorites differ from his, but I bought this on LP 25 years ago and it changed my life. These are exhilarating performances, that move you effortlessly through time and space into a world both far away and very, very close. So much great music, wonderfully performed. Take a chance--it might change your life as well!
One of the finest early music performances ever recorded.......2001-09-03
And an intriguing work of scholarship besides. This was originally released back in the early 1970's by the late David Munrow as a three album box set.
The first part of this recording is basically dedicated to Machaut and his contemporaries. The chanson -Amours me fait desirer- remains striking to this day, with its unusual leap in its first measures. -Amis tout dous- is a lovely miniature, and so also is the monophonic -Quant je sui mis au retour-. But the high point of this part of the record is -Quant j'ay l'espart-, a duet between countertenor and bass cornetto (a serpent?), understated and heartbreaking.
The second part is weirdness from the Avignon court of the Popes, the time when rhythmic notation got more sophisticated, and composers grew more experimental. The unusual chromaticism of -Fumeux fume- is given a great performance here. The -Tre fontane- estampie is given a reading here that is truly frenzied. -Plasanche, ou tost- is a lovely song. You also get rhythmic oddities like -Le greygnour bien-.
The third album nears Renaissance music, and focuses on Dufay and Binchois. Loud instruments like sackbuts and shawms are featured on pieces like -Donnes l'assault-, which seems risky, but sometimes works. The usually quiet pieces on the -La Spagna- ground are here given a marching-band performance on loud winds. The real high points here, though, are the motet -O tres piteulx-, Binchois absolutely gorgeous -Amoureux suy-, and the setting of Petrarch's -Vergine bella-.
This is a definitive early music performance that should never be allowed to go out of print. My only complaint with the CD edition is that it lacks some of the more extensive notes that came with the phonograph record booklet.

The artist universally known as Maceo meets the Artist Formerly Known as Prince on this new star-studded venture also featuring Ani DiFranco and Sheryl Crow. Mostly, it's the stuff Maceo does best: mid- to uptempo funk grooves that test the alto saxophonist's sharp, rhythmic approach and lift him miles above his imitators. Perhaps unsurprisingly, considering his own very ascetically produced sound, Prince's "Greatest Romance Ever Sold" isn't the most successful moment on the album. His postmodern pop doesn't suit Maceo's gutsy, natural sound the way James Brown or Bootsy Collins could. Nor does the three-way partnership with Crow on the rock-style "Baby Knows" offer the saxophonist much of an opportunity to dig dirt. But "Simply Tooley"--a horn-heavy return to something like the P-Funk sound--and "Rabbits in the Pea Patch" are two of Maceo's best tracks in years. --Linton Chiswick

Certainly Maceo Parker doesn't need any assistance as smoking versions of the Isley Brothers' "Work to Do," the album's opening stuttering funk salvo of the self-composed "Rabbits in the Pea Patch," and "Coin Toss" (DiFranco's track) makes clear. The talented Maceo Parker, who is only slightly less adept at the flute and piano, rips into scorching solos equally as energetic as anything he did with James Brown or George Clinton.

First of all, Maceo Parker is a relatively unsung hero of funk. A lot of people can remember, "Hit me Maceo!", but few completely grasp how pervasive his sound as a multidecade dealer of the Funk. Maceo's work with Parliament as a member of the Horny Horns is a key contribution, and his work with the JBS, a spinoff of James Brown's stuff is essential as well. As a solo artist, Maceo's music is more relevant to what's happening in funk then James Brown now that he's lost his core collaborators and can't dance as well.
Maceo's solo work starts with seeing a live show! If you have a chance to spend $19 on this album or spend $60 bucks to see him live, see the man live!!! Maceo live is one of the greatest funk acts around. After you've seen a live show, you probably want to dig one of his solo albums, and "Life On Planet Groove" is definitely the place to start.
And now we're left with Dial M A C E O. "Dial" is Maceo trying to move to the mainstream and broaden his appeal from overseas adulation and hard core funkateers in the states. The result is cleaner more produced horn sound, some smoother funk work and a laundry list of collaborations that don't really work for me. This album to me is like a lesser version of "Funk Overload", which I believe was the album immediately preceding it. You get some funk covers like the Isley's "Work to Do", one of my favorite tracks on the album. You get a novelty funk tune in "Rabbits in a Pea Patch." And you get some smooth Maceo on flute, [not too much flute on Funk Overload, though]. The big change is the Prince covers and I agree with other reviewers; covering Prince stuff is not really Maceo's bag or why I'm into Maceo. Likewise, it's nice that he's trying to bring his son along for the ride as a rapper, but Corey is not a viable solo artist as a rapper and the rhymes don't really add much to the sound.
Personally, I'd give this one two and a half stars and recommend it only to Maceo completists. If you dig Maceo, "Life On Planet Groove" first, than the Roots series of albums if you want his jazzier side, "Funk Overload" if you want the more produced.
Last thing for Maceo fans; check out my other review of Fred Wesley's memoirs "Hit Me Fred" for some perspective on post James Brown/post Parliament JB horns alums. I agree with Fred Wesley that the dissolving of the JB Horns and the resulting Maceo as pure solo artist has not been the best thing for the Funk.
Maceo's still a badass, but he's done a lot better work than this.

An excellent album!.......2000-10-29
I didn't know what to expect when I bought this album - jazz or funk, instrumental or vocals.
When I popped it in, I was surprised that almost all the songs are incredible! Being a Prince fan, I expected The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and Baby Knows (the hidden track), to be the best of the bunch. But, I was surprised that I enjoyed some of the other songs even more!
If you enjoy funk music, this is a must-have! Maceo even makes James Taylor sound funky!
