I Don't Want to Grow Up

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Recorded after lead singer Milo Aukerman's first stab at higher "ed-you-kayshun," this giddy disc is considerably cleaner, not to mention friendlier, than the band's essential debut, Milo Goes to College. Not that they'dentirely turned into lapdogs: like the MMonkees, they had a theme son ("Descendents"); like Peter Pan, they expressed the sentiment in the title track. But more than anything else, the Descendents were punked-up heirs to Cheap Trick's legacy, albeit with a less-honed worldview. As with all discs from these guys (and their Siamese Twin, All), card-carrying feminists are advised to steer clear, but those who subscribe to the notion of laughing at others before they laugh at you will most assuredly feel comfy in these grooves. --David Sprague --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03

I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.

5 out of 5 stars Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13

The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.

3 out of 5 stars A matter of taste..........2007-05-08

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, just like the movie..........2007-04-21

It is so wonderful, relaxing..if you`re thinking in buying...Just do it!

5 out of 5 stars This is the holy grail of all the Descendents albums.......2005-11-25

I declare this to be the best of them all because their are a ton of great songs and they had good humor at the right timing. If you are a newbie to the band get this first. you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite album from Descendents.......2005-04-15

Somery album is a compilation of the best from Milos band , but when it comes about their official releases i consider that "I dont Want to grow up" is their most solid release and the album that shows to Descendents in their best shape age and moment , this album is funny, judgemental, dinamic, intelligent, 100% enjoyable, 80s punk is amazing pretty much better than punks bands available today , in 80s punk bands had a reason to exists; love for Punk Rock, real love i mean, today theres only one reason: be stars, be rich and be famous, nothing wrong with this but the main reason is suposed to be love for punk rock genre, the rest will come along , but maybe the real Punk rock spirit is dead by now, descendents will allow us to remain better times however

5 out of 5 stars They lied, and grew up.......2004-09-20

They didn't wanna grow up but they did and made a more perfect album than even Milo goes to college. This album starts of with the song "Descendents" which pretty much tries and picks up the pieces after three years have gone by. Every song is amazing and even more so the band tried different tempos and styles and also Milo sings a lot more rather than screaming. I guess it might seem a lot more emo or whatever but it still has the passion that they always do and just really catchy songs. The only bad things are Frank Navetta is gone and that the song I dont want to grow up becomes very annoying after a few listens.

5 out of 5 stars Second best descendents album.......2004-01-08

This album contains many of the Descendents Greatest hits. it contains my world, x-mas vacation, silly girl and many others awesome tracks! If you're looking to a great and awesome punk-rock cd, go buy this one!

3 out of 5 stars Descendent's worst.......2003-12-29

The Descendents are one of the all time greats in the history of Punk Rock. They came out early, defining a genre that today we would call Pop Punk. Today's Pop Punk is far inferior to the melodic, catchy tunes the Descendents brought us in their prime. Their songs were about real issues in life, and when they used humour they were authentically funny. My respect for this band is high. That being said, a mediocre album is a mediocre album.

There's nothing wrong with the opening track, "Descendents", in fact, it's a great song. The next song, the title track, "I Don't Want to Grow Up", is just lame. This song is host to the most annoying Descendents chorus ever, why they would make it the title track is beyond my understanding of human motives. "Pervert" is a good song, though unfortunately one of the best on the album. "Rockstar" is an annoying 30 second piece of garbage, followed by another annoying 30 second piece of garbage, "No FB". The next song, "Can't Go Back" is a good Descendents song, catchy yet powerful. "GCF" is ridiculously bad, unlistenable. "My World" is a great song, my favorite on the album. "Theme" is a neat instrumental, it's really quite good actually. The next song "Silly Girl" is another highlight of the album, with a decent melody. "In Love This Way" is a good song, though seems unneccesary after hearing "Can't Go Back" and "Silly Girl". "Christmas Vacation" makes for a pleasent listen, though is nothing special and will quickly grow boring. "Good Good Things" completely sucks, and amazingly it's not the worst song on the album. The final track, "Ace" has to be the worst song on the album, discounting the short stupid intolerable songs, "Rockstar" and "No FB".

After hearing "Milo Goes To College" and "Everything Sucks", masterpieces of their genre, I expected a lot more from this album. This album is an inconsistent mix of the disposable and the somewhat enjoyable, leaning more on the disposable side. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than the hardcore Descendents fan.
