Amazon.com essential recording

Simply one of the greatest live blues recordings ever. Hooker plays alone at Soledad, yet the real thrill is hearing him backed at Greenwich Village's Café Au-Go-Go in 1966 by Muddy Waters and his band, including pianist Otis Spann, unsung harmonica giant George Smith, Francis Clay on drums, and guitarists Sammy Lawhorn and Luther Johnson. All are at the height of their abilities, but it's Hooker who works like a hoodoo conjurer, making misery rain down in "Seven Days" and "When My First Wife Left Me." This August night's reading of "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" ranks among the most intimidating vocal performances ever taped. His guitar and baritone singing sink to rarely heard depths of the blues--that secret place in the music (known only to its absolute masters) where it becomes an elemental force. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Hard blues True blues Live blues.......2007-01-21

John lee seemed like he had the blues his hole life.Maybe he did maybe he didn't. He played the hole blues man thing to a T. He seemed like the coolest of all cats when he was up on stage. That's because he was. The people bought it hook line and sinker as they should.I have heard, lived and felt the blues since I was 8 yrs.old. I can totally relate to what he was doing and singing about back then and now.Hookers blues and boogie music is and will always be timeless. That to me is the conection I have with him.Pure blues, no nonsense music that hits you like a ton of bricks. This CD does just that and more.

If I was stranded on a deserted island and I was to have one CD this would be the one , thought that Hooker and Heat was good , this blows it away ...............

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Live Albums in One CD.......2006-10-18

This is actually two live albums combined. Cafe Go-Go finds Johnny earlier in his career and Live at Soledad prison finds Johnny mid-career right in the middle of his endless boogie phase.

Live at The Cafe Go-Go is recoreded with Muddy Waters band (Muddy always had the best bands!) including the great Otis Spann on Piano. Muddy even plays guitar on one of the tunes. Sound quality is excellent and John Live is in fine form, but a little restrain. You get the feeling the band had not played that much together. Hearing JLH with Otis Spann in keys is pretty cool however. Bad like Jesse James is one of the creepiest songs made and is made even more haunting by Spann's parse piano.

Live at Soledad prison catch John Lee is his Endless Boogie phase, which for me is where it is at. Sound quality is surprisely very good and his band, including his son John Lee Jr., are tight. Bang Bang Bang is a great jam all the way from the Motor City. This contains all but two cuts of the original Live at Soledad album. These two tunes were sung by John Lee Jr. I love how at the end of the album the prison plugs the plug on the band and it takes a while for everybody to figure out what happened.

Looking for some more great live John Lee Hooker check the live Album with Albert King (they don'y played together, but share the same CD) 'I Play the Blues for you'. For me this is some of the finest JLH caught live on tape. JLH studio album 'Never get out of these blues alive' is also another great album.

This is a great album for anyone who enjoys the blues, live blues, John Lee, or enjoys Otis Spann. Album should be the staple of any basic bblues collection. I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Live John Lee..........2005-11-22

Hearing John Lee Hooker backed by the Muddy Water's band from the 1960's is a real treat. The version of "I'm Bad Like Jessie James" that opens the CD is one of the most menacing songs I've ever heard; John Lee describes in detail how he will "take care of" a former friend he took in who went around town telling everybody that he slept with John Lee's wife. This song is a perfect example of how John Lee Hooker was the personification of badass. John Lee also runs through some of his classics like "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" and "Bang Bang Bang Bang". I prefer the Cafe Au Go Go set to the Soledad Prison set, but both sets are worth hearing and are full of good performances from John Lee and the band. This is definitely worth getting if you are fan of John Lee Hooker or the blues.

5 out of 5 stars What an incredible man!.......2005-04-07

It's hard not to get shivers when listening to this recording. John Lee Hooker had such an incredible voice and it's as if his singing and playing encapsulates all misery imaginable. He extracted so much emotion from these songs that made me feel as though I'd actually lived the experience. It's so incredibly painful to listen to in places that I expected the heavens to open up in response. This is a man who knew what he was doing.

The band is in top form and John Lee uses them to get the crowd rocking as he works his magic. Everything is spot-on! From slow, painful numbers to upbeat, rollicking shuffles, John Lee Hooker and his band can do it all.

This is a landmark album that shows a man (and a band) at the top of their game and it's something no self-respecting blues fan should be without! You'd have to be dead not to be affected by this!

5 out of 5 stars Still delivers with the best.......2006-08-02

If you talk about the 60s and 70s, I believe the two most underrated groups are Spirit and the Blues Project, both of which were very jazzy for the taste of the epoch and so much more sophisticated than the commercial music.

I bought this CD to see if I would still like it. You hear so much music from the 60s to the 90s all over the radio. Some sounds rancid and some sublime.

I loved this album when it first came out. (My friend Chris Winfield who is now an artist, turned me on to them as he did to much jazz, classical and blues.) They were among my favorite groups then and remain so.

I have to say that I loved Flute thing and a few instrumentals which are not included here but no one can perform every track in concert.

Listening now, I especially enjoy Alberta and Violets of Dawn, very poetic with that certain offness which Verlaine recommends for poetry. (I can't even recommend Verlaine so much since so many other French poets exceed him by far but he did write some amazing poems on how poetry should work.)

So, if you want pure poetry in the form of music, get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars For me, this was the first............2006-03-22

High school was ending. College beckoned. And music was about to explode: Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan. For me, the first taste of it came from the Blues Project. This album, their first, was recorded live, on a four-track, and freshness, spontaneity, and sheer fun leap out from the speakers with amazing clarity all things considered. The later studio work from this group does not have the spark found in this one. If you enjoyed this compilation years ago, buy it again and you won't be disappointed - you will also enjoy the liner notes. If you have never heard it, and want to experience how a golden era of music began, get it. A treat awaits.

The album is the mix Acid House and a modern day minimalist style music. They were always ahead of their time.

4 out of 5 stars Dance Hall Days.......2007-01-17

It usually isn't a good sign when a band tosses a project away and detours into releasing an album.

In the case of Kraftwerk, the bulk of the Techno pop project was nixed after several years of work - though it produced a great video for the original version of Tour de France - for the dance club mix-tape, Electric Cafe.

The album was released five years after the classic Computer World & Kraftwerk's revolution within the studio that made electronics an industry standard.

I split the music into two segments, with the strongest by far Boing Boom Tschak, Techno Pop and Musique Non Stop. Though the final three cuts are interesting - The Telephone Call, Sex Object and Electric Cafe - they show a little strain in the band's cutting-edge creativity.

When released, the album was met with mostly critical reviews from fans and reviewers. But the sound surprisingly holds up well and, though not as adventurous as Computer World, it shows Kraftwerk pulsating to the rhythms of the dance floor they created years before.

4 out of 5 stars 3'5 Stars - Good Album But Not Revolutionary.......2006-11-15

It seems like when "Electric Cafe" came out in 1986 Kraftwerk weren't as revolutionary anymore and many others had catched up on their electro music. It was 5 years after their last album "Computer World" and many things had changed, They had actually been in the studio for 5 years to come up with a new album and the expectations were enormous. There's also 3 diffrent languages versions (German, English and Spanish) of this release. Even if this album isn't bad in any way and grows on you I feel like the first 3 of the songs are too simular and actually could have been just one, they mention their respective title's (Boing Boom Tschak, Techno Pop, Music Non Stop) through the songs and have a simular structure also, however they do have diffrent melodies and the third song "Musique Non Stop" was also a hit. But apart from that we saw loads of simular albums released at the same time and the emergence of Electro and Techno music. The song "Telephone Call" which deals with telephones and dialing, is one of the best. It once proves how much you can create with computers and samples. "Sex Object" had a odd title for this album, what simularity had it with technology?. It feautures trademark robotic voices and simular strcture as the other songs, but isn't as good. Last song, the title track is a highlight. It sounds like The Neptunes and Timbaland had this as a role model when they started out. The beats are awesome but coming last it feels a little overlooked. Check this song out though, it's one of their best!. "Electric Cafe" would be the last Kraftwerk album til "Tour The France Soundtracks" in 2003. That's almost 20 years. It's not one of their best, but it isn't as bad as some experts say. The only problem was that they didn't come up with any revolutionary ideas on this album and many other musicians had done simular albums at the time. However, It's defenitely worth purchasing. Half of the 6 songs are excellent. The rest are decent but alright. If you are new to Kraftwerk don't start here though, take a look at "Trans-Europe Express" or "The Man-Machine" first.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Kraftwerk album ..........2006-07-01

... with "Man Machine" being equally as good. Electric Cafe is full of typical Kraftwerk melodies and "Boing Boom Tschak" again shows how only Kraftwerk use vocoders. "Musique Non Stop" or "The Telephone Call" are classics and although the album was released in 1986, long after the band had truly revolutionised the music world, it is up there with the best.

3 out of 5 stars The Machines Wear Down.......2006-06-28

The concept behind Electric Cafe was excellent, that is Kraftwerk reflecting on the bands they influenced and incorperating some of the new ideas into their own music. This was the era of synth pop and the "new romantic" movement. New wave had departed from punk and was radio and commercial friendly. Kraftwerk after releasing some of the most influential albums of the 70's (Trans Europe Express, The Man Machine) went through an inactive period and came back with 1981's brilliant Computer World. They attempted to release an album in 1983 called "Techno Pop" but for various reasons, it was modified to become Electric Cafe and released 3 years later. Music Non Stop, Techno Pop and Boing Boom Tschak as a suite are great, using sampling and heavy techno beats for a song (in the remixed version) that was so catchy that it concludes all of Kraftwerk's concerts. This continues the dehumanized, robotic virtues that held every good Kraftwerk song together. On the other hand,a song like "Sex Object" just doesn't work. The lyrics "I don't want to be your sex object. Treat me with feeling and some respect" just don't sound like Kraftwerk when compared to earlier takes on relationships such as the Model ("she's posing for consumer products now and then") or the prophetic "Computerlove". Its not that Kraftwerk ran out of ideas ("Tour De France" intended to be on the album has all of the Kraftwerk virtues). Its just that they didn't stand out so much, since a multitude of bands were by then, highly in debt to Kraftwerk. "Electric Cafe" is a product of its time. It is still listenable and fun but not the place to start for a Kraftwerk novice.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Breath-Taking.......2007-03-05

Being a harpist myself, I can truly admire Catrin Finch's talent, style and choice of music selections for her first album.

Some songs are truly a revelation for the harp as an instrument using New Age style accompaniment, while there are still pieces with a classical vibe.

    Well Done!

5 out of 5 stars full of energy worth savouring.......2004-12-13

The artist is able to deconstruct the traditional image of harp as an instument. The texture and the hue of the music is rich and full of lustre. very creative and versatile.

3 out of 5 stars Versatile virtuoso outshines musically uneven material.......2004-02-01

There's a reason Charles, Prince of Wales, revived a long-dormant (since 1871) tradition and presented Catrin Finch a Royal Appointment as his harpist. At age 23 she is a remarkable talent, with pristine technique and a fluency in the languages of both classical and contemporary music.

If only the material on her debut disc were equal to her talent.

While Finch is extraordinary, the music is a mixed bag of modern jazz/pop tunes, re-tooled classical favorites, and several hit-and-miss arrangements by Finch's musical partner, composer Karl Jenkins.

It's all starts and stops, ups and downs. In the jazz/pop genre, Dave Grusin's infectious "Mountain Dance" and the relaxed groove of Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays' "James" are perfectly suited for harp, while Chick Corea's "Spain" just never catches fire. Among the contemporary, experimental compositions, Jenkins' minimalist but tuneful "Harpers Bizarre" is far more interesting than Steve Reich's "Third Movement from Electric Counterpoint" - a tedious ostinato that never develops into anything. In a more traditional vein, "Crossing the Stone," taken from Jenkins' double harp concerto, is a rich, lovely setting of a Welsh folk tune, but two other selections from the concerto - "Eternal Dream" and "Caf? Vamp Latino" - don't relate musically at all. And while Finch, unaccompanied, is flawless on Bach's "Prelude from Partita No. 3," her performance of Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" is marred by the decision to include some noisy Middle Eastern percussion, as is Debussy's "Clair de lune" by an intrusive, soporific voice-over.

On the upside again, Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria" and the Welsh lullaby "Suo Gan" team Finch nicely with solo voices (though countertenor Terrance Barber's vibrato is perhaps an acquired taste), and Jenkins' "Thingamujig" is a fun, lively jig.

Concluding the album, the first movement of Jenkins' "Palladio" (featured for years in TV commercials for DeBeers diamonds) in a dull dance remix has none of the energy of the original version for string quartet and is a totally gratuitous inclusion.

From Finch's liner-note comment that "I've never really been stuffy about classical music ... I'm open to everything, really," it's apparent that some tracks are an attempt to make a "classical" instrument more accessible to listeners of contemporary music. Again, Finch is terrific, but listeners would be better served by a recording of the harpist that displays her virtuosity in a single genre - whether classical, contemporary or experimental - instead of this hodgepodge.

Give the performer five stars, the material two, and look forward to hearing this talented young artist for many years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars A Towering Musical Achievement.......2003-10-29

While biographies disguised as reviews are tiresome, some background is in order, in this case. At the age of 23, Catrin Finch has been playing the harp for 18 years. She was appearing on British television and with major orchestras by the time she was 10, and was appointed the Royal Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales (a.k.a. Prince Charles) at the age of 20. Bottom line: This lady has more than enough credentials to be regarded as a major musical talent.

But does having a long list of credentials translate to making a great album? In this case, you bet it does. On "Crossing The Stone," Catrin Finch combines piles of technical expertise with surprising and even stunning musical choices. Sure, she covers classical music (such as Bach's 'Prelude from Partita #3' and Handel's 'The Arrival of The Queen of Sheba') brilliantly, but you'd expect that from an alumnus of The Royal College of Music. But would you expect to hear a piece by jazz pianist Dave Grusin done on the harp? How about music by guitarist Pat Metheny, or a Chick Corea composition?

Catrin Finch is an incredible talent, and she has created a beautiful, eclectic album that demands (and will receive) repeated listening. Unfortunately, it's also an album that you probably won't find in your local music store. This album has not received a lot of publicity, and I have yet to walk into a CD store and find it sitting on the shelf. Save yourself a lot of tedious shopping: buy it here and now.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harp Album.......2003-08-26

I first heard Catrin Finch on a free sample CD I received and when I listened to it, I couldn't believe that the instrument that she was playing was the harp! It was so vibrant and full of life. It felt like I had opened the windows and let the sun shine in. The harp is the world's oldest - and most difficult instrument, but in Ms. Finch's power it is sounds both contemporary effortlessly played. It is a wonderful buy for any appreciate of music, and the most electric harp album ever produced.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-09-24

Was only familiar with their material up to Computer World. Decided to try this one from 1986 and was very pleasantly surprised. There are a few nominal similarities to Computer World, but this is definetly a more advanced and finely crafted work. Aestetically the sound is wonderful, crystal-clear and still retaining that fat analog sound but using electronic sources (though I think on one track I detected some bass guitar, and maybe even guitar). The Karl Bartos - sung "Telephone Call" is reminiscent of Depeche Mode at it's best. There is much that looks to the future on this, including breakbeat and ambient electronica. Check it out if you like electronic experimental, dance etc. Not a dull moment on this, and a MUST-HAVE for Kraftwerk fans. (Try to keep tonge-in-cheek when listening to Sex Object.)

        5 out of 5 stars Ground-breaking technopop.......1999-05-08

This record is a must-have for anybody with even the slightest interest in electronic music. It combines electronic sounds with lingual aesthetics and beautiful rhythm patterns. Highly recommended.

I held off for a long time checking out Georgie Fame, but now I realize what I was missing. This is not just another white psychadelic era British bluesman mod rocker guy riding on the heals of the enormous influence of Jimmy Smith/Booker T. in the 60's - - the guy's a stylist. Apparently he tooked tunes he liked, and sang and arranged them well, very well, and wasn't afraid to venture into whatever territory he liked. From swinging rock and roll to disco, the album includes his takes on everything from Vocalese to Memphis Soul, and very convincingly. Hearing a guy doing a Booker T. tune one minute, a rock and roll calypso number the next, bebop singing the next and my favorite Bobby Womack tune Daylight the next can be a bit freaky... yet the tightness, energy and rockin' swing is all there and it works (even though I think it was a bit retarded of him to replace the proper word Z - - pronounce Zee, with ZED on Sunny... gosh, I get so annoyed everytime I hear the word Zed... its Zee, Zee, Zee as in Zebra, not Zedbra.) Enough nitpicking... the arrangements and playing are great. Highly personalized too... he does some very funny and subtle things when he's really wound up. Though lesser known in the US, I'd have to say that he's definitely in a category all of his own !

What a CD - what Mr Wilson, above, does not say is that this CD cannot be copied by any other artist as GF is unique...

I discovered Georgie Fame on my first ever visit to Ronnie Scotts in London, many many years ago and wondered what this pop musician was doing at a jazz club. I listened to him and his great backing musicians and became a fan. My biggest complaint about this guy ever since is that he doesn't produce enough albums. So here I was searching Amazon for CDs I had never heard of before and finding this Japanese compilation import CD and hoping it wasn't going to be too pop orientated and contained just a few tracks that could be considered Jazz. I needn't have worried, apart from several pop tunes, here's Georgie at his most fun and talented best displaying a sound that swings and swings between blues, jazz, calypso and pop ( and the tracks were recorded in the 60s & 70s!!! - WOW ). If you haven't got any of his early ( POP? ) albums, you'll love this CD. If like me you think this guy is one of the most underated and unappreciated artists in the jazz/blues genre check out his early stuff on this CD - impressive or what?
