When they first hit the underground scene with this debut album, the Pixies were like an exotic drink that hid its sweetness behind a ferocious bite. The album's production is like a crude explosion: every strum and clang comes down with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. There is roudiness in here. Black Francis coos and snarls in a way in which Kurt Cobain would just do. Cobain played along with Francis' way, as shown in his band Nirvana. Such wonderful and raunchy tracks include the Spanish introduction in "Vamos", "Isla de Encanta"(you can hear Mrs. John Murphy singing softly in this one as background vocalist), and "I've Been Tired", the song featured subtly in M. Night Shyamalan's "Unbreakable" in which "Mr. Glass" is down in mood at a comic book store. The song is heard over the intercom.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us introduce the essence of the pre-mainstream `Pixies:' with themes that are rather indecipherable, but of which utilize a personality that will make the hairs on the back of your neck run, duck, and cover; hiding from the creepy-crawly bass, the spidery, frothy, and utterly venomous guitars, and squashy drums, that all make a cloud of noisy, alternative punk-pop aggression. All this is propelled with yelping, screaming, wailing, and chanting. To boot these lyrics are sometimes even shouted in Spanish, like a language-confused banshee. It should go without saying that you may feel awkward and neurotic, all while dancing around the room, charging full speed into the wall having finally uncovered a new kind of kick. This adrenaline rush always comes back when listening to this album, coming in the shape of a Pixie, it has your first and last name, and like with Santa Claus, it's your decision if it'll make you naughty or nice. Simply, it is impossible to not get into the `Pixies.' That is, as long as you are not Fascist, a wife beater, part of the Ku Klux Klan, or a Ronald Regan enthusiast. In other words, `Pixie' haters are just evil people-- as this is a band that is special to many people's hearts, this writer obviously included. So, now you ask me to stop drooling and actually write the bloody review. Ok, no problem. Just where do I begin?
Out from the shadowy corner of the once small underground cult movement of Indie rock came the Pixies, a quartet from Boston, who with financial help from the father of their lead singer, Black Francis (who would later change his name to Frank Black when he went solo,) recorded seventeen songs that became known as `The Purple Tape.' Eight of these are found on "Come On Pilgrim," their 1987 debut EP--many of the other tracks are available on different albums, and are also collected on a self-titled compilation.
Even when looked at by itself, "Come on Pilgrim" is a feat, throttling amongst bursting stop-go-and-explode stampedes of alternative power-pop with a healthy ode to the previous decades' punk rockers. This album is scary in its crooked delivery, and that alarming disarray factor is one of their more impeccable qualities, along with their clever, and wicked antics; as the song `I`ve Been Tired' says, it'll make you "want to be a singer like Lou Reed," but certainly would not make you want to "lose your pe*is to a wh*re with disease," unless of course it is the only way you could turn into a Pixie fan.
The first song, Caribou, and the squally voice of Francis, amiss the splintery, albeit modest string instrumentals of lead guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist Kim Deal, and the steady, clambering beat of drummer David Lovering, as well as the cries to "repent," make the listener know that this is not a usual day in the musical factory. The song tries for a feeling of didactic self-evaluation, yet the lyrics are impenetrable, even bad in the poetic sense. However, its not about that, its about turning the normal musical conventions around, and creating a song that is catchy, even if it is quite fragmented. While other songs have very memorable and playful lyrics, for example, `Nimrod's Song,' contains the winning lyric: "My sister held me close and whispered to my bleeding head, "You are the son of a mother*uc*er."
`Come on Pilgrim' lassoes you in with noisy dynamics, drawing you in with its instrument hooks. Yet, even if the sound is unique, admittedly it is also more loud feedback than sophistication. On this Indie album, they obviously were not yet heavily produced, as each song sounds a bit alike, although the `Pixies' try to add individuality to each track, the music still never slows it down, or travels past a certain aggressiveness, choosing to stick to a similar tempo as the next one. "Come on Pilgrim" is an imperfect, but accessible debut from one of rocks most consistent acts of the late 1980's/ early 1990's period.

This Ain't No Holiday, but It Always Turns Out this Way!.......2007-05-04
The Pixies, a Rock alternative band who began in the mid '80s inspired many of the 1990s Alt. and Grunge acts..although The Pixies are Way better and possibly more influential than all those Seattle Bands. Yep...this is what Begin it all for The Pixies! "Come On Pilgrim"(1987) is a fury-filled Rock Ep containing 8 Raw tracks.
"Caribou" has been one of my favorite Pixie tracks over the last few years -featuring a crooning vocal side to Black Francis' otherwise manic wildman like howling screams. ...Well he does Scream in the chorus: REPENT! -as much of the lyrics of Pixies early work focuses on The Bible. Also I believe the Pixies were inspired by Pere Ubu (others).
Joey Santiago has to be one the Most under-rated lead guitarist out there - he shows us his Frenzied fast freakout guitar playing throughout, especially on "Vamos" -Black Francis singing: "if we get Bored, we'll move to California." and "Isla de Encanta"- purely smokin'
Then you have track four w/ another TOP Favorite of mine in "Ed is Dead" - also featuring the awesome sweet power of Kim Deal's backing vocals behind Frank Black's. I love guy/girl vocal duos. It just adds more substance or variety -and The Pixies are one of the Best.
"The Holiday Song" (track 5) was used as an opener for many early Pixie performances. "Nimrod's Son" - (indie hit) a yellin' good time..Jack White-(The White Stripes) was paying attention.
Next is some more Havoc-hell raising in "I've Been Tired" and then the closer "Levitate Me": "...Elevator lady..elevator lady - Lady levitate Me!"
Their next 2 (full length) albums were probably their Best with "Surfer Rosa" and "Doolittle"- but "Come On Pilgrim" is definately a rewarding listen from "Caribou" on Through-

This is to rock'n'roll what the cantata bwv 82 is to classical music: the one work that dwarves and runs circle around any possible contenders.

This is less an EP and more an album with absolutely no filler. Every song just plain rocks. And if you don't like a song at first, then in about two minutes another one will be rampaging in your eardrums.
Even though it doesn't exactly show off their softer side (except perhaps on "Caribou"), Come on Pilgrim is probably the best way to introduce someone to the Pixies. Raging thrash guitars, drumming that borders on the manic, obtuse and obscene lyrics shrieked and howled in English and Spanish - this is what the Pixies are all about. And while they had not yet raised this to an artform (they did on Surfer Rosa and Doolittle), it's still clearly the foundation of their sound.
Definitely worth a listen for both Pixies newcomers and die hard fans alike.

Come On Try It.......2005-09-26
I'll never forget the day I first bought and heard 'Sufer Rosa (& Come On Pilgrim)', it was one of those moments in life when the music really does provided a soundtrack to life. It was a Friday afternoon, I was at college, it was a cool autum day with clear blue skies, I'd just broken up with my girlfriend of almost a year that week because she'd cheated on me, and right that moment I was waiting for my computer skills class to open in about half an hour. With a big break in between morning classes and afternoon ones I'd popped into to buy some albums that day kind of to cheer me up. As I sat outside the room on the second floor over looking a court yard I popped 'Surfer Rosa' into my portable cd player and from the opening strains of 'Bone Machine' things in life started to look up. It was my first pixies album and I'd only really picked it up because one it had previously been recommended to me, and two it was cheap. I was lucky that day (the other albums I'd bought were Mogwai's 'Happy Music For Happy People' and Black Flag's 'First Four Years' comp, both great as well might I add).
Everything about the album was right to me. It was catchy without being typical pop. The guitars buzzed but weren't heavy, they were light and spidery but still packed a punch. The whole album was and still is weird and wonderful, manic and crazy, but most importantly it was fun, how can you not feel good listening to this its postively bursting with life and engery. By the end of 'River Euphrates' I was out of my blues and feeling pretty damn good. As much as I love some other albums I don't think any other band or ever album could swing my mood around from so depressed to on to of the world in just seven songs. That was the magic of the Pixies on thise album to me. Sure its an important album in the scheme of indie music and all, big influence on Nirvana ectera, but for me 'Surfer Rosa' will always be a personal album. By the time my class opened I didn't want to take my head phones off an go in. So as soon as I could I put the cd in one of the computers and played it out loud for everyone to hear, which annoyed the girl the who sat next to me who was into hip hop and the teacher who eventually told me to put my headphones back on or turn it off.
So I'll recommend this album to everyone, its brilliant and possibly life altering, if you're at the right spot in your life when you hear it I guess. But I'll also say get the version with this version with the 'Come On Pilgrim' EP add on because I can't imagine listening to this without hearing 'The Holiday Song' or 'I've Been Tired' and ending with 'Levitate Me' and heck all the rest either. It might cost you a little more, but you'll probably find its worth every cent of it.

Surfer Rosa must be one of the greatest alternative rock albums ever recorded. Its abrasiveness takes a bit of getting used to, but once you're over the hurdle, it's an exhilarating album. The Pixies had everything a rock band could possibly want- their music is a thrilling adrenaline-fuelled ride- a perfect blend of melody and noise, characterised by a free-wheeling eclecticism, a much-imitated sound of lurching rythmical dynamics and, to top it all, a crazy front man with inspired lyrics. Steve Albini's production is equally impressive- the snare drums crack and the guitars fizz (they were recorded in a toilet cubicle!)- giving the album an irresistible energy.
Come On Pilgrim lacks the punch of Surfer Rosa, and isn't as well recorded, but its worth having for Caribou, Ed is Dead and I've Been Tired, for its amusing lyrics ("I said I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed/I like Lou Reed/she said, sticking her tongue in my ear..")
It amazes me when people laud albums like White Light/White Heat, Loveless and Daydream Nation, when this album clearly wipes the floor with all of them. It's even got a classic sleeve, with some gratuitous female nudity and a surrealism-inspired guitar head protruding from the wall. What more do you want?

You know how your dad stopped listening to new music in 1972 or so after he got all those Beatles, Aretha, Neil Young, Marvin Gaye, Stones, and early Zeppelin albums? He knew that Bad Company and Foreigner didn't have anything to add. Lots of intelligent people quit buying records for a while after this band broke up.
The Pixies were a highwater mark that college rock still looks up to -- melodic genius drenched in bone-breaking noise. "Surfer Rosa" rocks like Meet the Pixies. This CD gives you the excellent 8-song EP "Come On Pilgrim," which includes the sublimely beautiful "Caribou" and seven other tooth-loosening hits. "Surfer Rosa" is brilliant from end to end -- I caught my refrigerator repairman singing along to "River Euphrates." "Cactus" and "I'm Amazed" are bedrock. And "Brick is Red" is my secret favorite -- an incomprehensible sing-song.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.

A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

When they first hit the underground scene with this debut album, the Pixies were like an exotic drink that hid its sweetness behind a ferocious bite. The album's production is like a crude explosion: every strum and clang comes down with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. English and Spanish lyrics collide as singer Black Francis (later Frank Black) shouts in a hoarse monotone and Mrs. John Murphy (later Kim Deal of the Breeders) backs him up with throaty wails. Yet somehow the clash of these bruising titans makes for tracks that print indelibly upon your consciousness--once let in. Kurt Cobain is their most famous student. He grafted the Pixies' time-honored craft of the big bang theory onto Nirvana's biggest hits. (You start with a quiet verse and then explode for catharsis in the chorus--evidenced best here with "I've Been Fired.") The Pixies themselves have served quietly, attaining post-punk godfather status not by tooting their own horns, but through the praise of a steady stream of genuflecting admirers whose word of mouth continues to increase the band's deserved critical standing. --Rob O'Connor

There is roudiness in here. Black Francis coos and snarls in a way in which Kurt Cobain would just do. Cobain played along with Francis' way, as shown in his band Nirvana. Such wonderful and raunchy tracks include the Spanish introduction in "Vamos", "Isla de Encanta"(you can hear Mrs. John Murphy singing softly in this one as background vocalist), and "I've Been Tired", the song featured subtly in M. Night Shyamalan's "Unbreakable" in which "Mr. Glass" is down in mood at a comic book store. The song is heard over the intercom.
We are Not Men, We are Pixies!.......2007-05-31
Ladies and gentlemen, let us introduce the essence of the pre-mainstream `Pixies:' with themes that are rather indecipherable, but of which utilize a personality that will make the hairs on the back of your neck run, duck, and cover; hiding from the creepy-crawly bass, the spidery, frothy, and utterly venomous guitars, and squashy drums, that all make a cloud of noisy, alternative punk-pop aggression. All this is propelled with yelping, screaming, wailing, and chanting. To boot these lyrics are sometimes even shouted in Spanish, like a language-confused banshee. It should go without saying that you may feel awkward and neurotic, all while dancing around the room, charging full speed into the wall having finally uncovered a new kind of kick. This adrenaline rush always comes back when listening to this album, coming in the shape of a Pixie, it has your first and last name, and like with Santa Claus, it's your decision if it'll make you naughty or nice. Simply, it is impossible to not get into the `Pixies.' That is, as long as you are not Fascist, a wife beater, part of the Ku Klux Klan, or a Ronald Regan enthusiast. In other words, `Pixie' haters are just evil people-- as this is a band that is special to many people's hearts, this writer obviously included. So, now you ask me to stop drooling and actually write the bloody review. Ok, no problem. Just where do I begin?
Out from the shadowy corner of the once small underground cult movement of Indie rock came the Pixies, a quartet from Boston, who with financial help from the father of their lead singer, Black Francis (who would later change his name to Frank Black when he went solo,) recorded seventeen songs that became known as `The Purple Tape.' Eight of these are found on "Come On Pilgrim," their 1987 debut EP--many of the other tracks are available on different albums, and are also collected on a self-titled compilation.
Even when looked at by itself, "Come on Pilgrim" is a feat, throttling amongst bursting stop-go-and-explode stampedes of alternative power-pop with a healthy ode to the previous decades' punk rockers. This album is scary in its crooked delivery, and that alarming disarray factor is one of their more impeccable qualities, along with their clever, and wicked antics; as the song `I`ve Been Tired' says, it'll make you "want to be a singer like Lou Reed," but certainly would not make you want to "lose your pe*is to a wh*re with disease," unless of course it is the only way you could turn into a Pixie fan.
The first song, Caribou, and the squally voice of Francis, amiss the splintery, albeit modest string instrumentals of lead guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist Kim Deal, and the steady, clambering beat of drummer David Lovering, as well as the cries to "repent," make the listener know that this is not a usual day in the musical factory. The song tries for a feeling of didactic self-evaluation, yet the lyrics are impenetrable, even bad in the poetic sense. However, its not about that, its about turning the normal musical conventions around, and creating a song that is catchy, even if it is quite fragmented. While other songs have very memorable and playful lyrics, for example, `Nimrod's Song,' contains the winning lyric: "My sister held me close and whispered to my bleeding head, "You are the son of a mother*uc*er."
`Come on Pilgrim' lassoes you in with noisy dynamics, drawing you in with its instrument hooks. Yet, even if the sound is unique, admittedly it is also more loud feedback than sophistication. On this Indie album, they obviously were not yet heavily produced, as each song sounds a bit alike, although the `Pixies' try to add individuality to each track, the music still never slows it down, or travels past a certain aggressiveness, choosing to stick to a similar tempo as the next one. "Come on Pilgrim" is an imperfect, but accessible debut from one of rocks most consistent acts of the late 1980's/ early 1990's period.

This Ain't No Holiday, but It Always Turns Out this Way!.......2007-05-04
The Pixies, a Rock alternative band who began in the mid '80s inspired many of the 1990s Alt. and Grunge acts..although The Pixies are Way better and possibly more influential than all those Seattle Bands. Yep...this is what Begin it all for The Pixies! "Come On Pilgrim"(1987) is a fury-filled Rock Ep containing 8 Raw tracks.
"Caribou" has been one of my favorite Pixie tracks over the last few years -featuring a crooning vocal side to Black Francis' otherwise manic wildman like howling screams. ...Well he does Scream in the chorus: REPENT! -as much of the lyrics of Pixies early work focuses on The Bible. Also I believe the Pixies were inspired by Pere Ubu (others).
Joey Santiago has to be one the Most under-rated lead guitarist out there - he shows us his Frenzied fast freakout guitar playing throughout, especially on "Vamos" -Black Francis singing: "if we get Bored, we'll move to California." and "Isla de Encanta"- purely smokin'
Then you have track four w/ another TOP Favorite of mine in "Ed is Dead" - also featuring the awesome sweet power of Kim Deal's backing vocals behind Frank Black's. I love guy/girl vocal duos. It just adds more substance or variety -and The Pixies are one of the Best.
"The Holiday Song" (track 5) was used as an opener for many early Pixie performances. "Nimrod's Son" - (indie hit) a yellin' good time..Jack White-(The White Stripes) was paying attention.
Next is some more Havoc-hell raising in "I've Been Tired" and then the closer "Levitate Me": "...Elevator lady..elevator lady - Lady levitate Me!"
Their next 2 (full length) albums were probably their Best with "Surfer Rosa" and "Doolittle"- but "Come On Pilgrim" is definately a rewarding listen from "Caribou" on Through-

This is to rock'n'roll what the cantata bwv 82 is to classical music: the one work that dwarves and runs circle around any possible contenders.

This is less an EP and more an album with absolutely no filler. Every song just plain rocks. And if you don't like a song at first, then in about two minutes another one will be rampaging in your eardrums.
Even though it doesn't exactly show off their softer side (except perhaps on "Caribou"), Come on Pilgrim is probably the best way to introduce someone to the Pixies. Raging thrash guitars, drumming that borders on the manic, obtuse and obscene lyrics shrieked and howled in English and Spanish - this is what the Pixies are all about. And while they had not yet raised this to an artform (they did on Surfer Rosa and Doolittle), it's still clearly the foundation of their sound.
Definitely worth a listen for both Pixies newcomers and die hard fans alike.

This 11-CD set, one might say jokingly, contains all the music ever written for the soprano voice and a bit for mezzo as well. And indeed, it's a staggering collection: In addition to her great Verdi heroines (the two Leonoras, Aida, Amelia, and Elvira in Ernani), Price is heard in her Puccini roles--Manon Lescaut, Butterfly, Tosca--and at least two dozen other roles, most of which she never sang on stage. Here are her heroic, secure Leonore in Fidelio, Strauss's high-flying Egyptian Helen, Purcell's Dido, Barber's Cleopatra, Bellini's Norma, Ariadne, Verdi's Violetta and Desdemona, Bizet's Carmen, Mozart's Countess, and Fiordiligi. Some are, naturally, more successful than others; almost none are embarrassing (Carmen comes close). In addition, she sings songs by Schubert, Schumann, and Strauss--none of them as well as say, Janet Baker or Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Barber's Knoxville, etc.--quite beautifully. Berlioz's Les Nuits d'été is not very good, but a group of spirituals is. In all, however, this is an amazing display by one of the century's greatest sopranos. Her Best Album.......2006-01-01
Along with the equally extensive "Prima Donna Collection" this is Leontyne Price's best album. Anyone who wants to become familiarized with her vocal technique and her art on record should own this album. It features her best work ever recorded. A lot of these arias and their respective soprano roles were not roles she sang on stage. Leontyne Price was not only a consummate artist, but a cautious one. The reason these arias, Lieder, Gospel and spirituals sound so beautiful and technically brilliant is because Leontyne was smart enough to sing them infrequently and in concert form. She did not take on new roles other than her repetitive Aidas, Leonoras, Butterfly, Toscas and Madame Lidoins, etc, because she was afraid of ruining her glorious voice too soon as many of her contemporary sopranos. Like soprano Zinka Milanov, Leontyne Price preserved the freshness and vitality of her voice through "operatic abstinence". Thus, the Norma, Salome, Manon, Lady Macbeth and even Traviata we hear on this album are well-rendered because she did NOT sing them on stage. She would have worn out her beautiful voice if she sung so many roles.
This collection is overwhelming. Leontyne Price proves herself to be a masterful artist of diverse repertoire. Pity she didn't really sing these on stage because she would have put Maria Callas and all the reigning divas before and after her to shame. Listen to her remarkable, unsurpassed Mozart repertoire. This she did sing in opera houses, probably because Mozart does not require a true lyrico-spinto heavyness and smaller opera houses can accomodate Mozartian voices that do not often rise above the staff/orchestra. She sang exquisite Fiordiligis at the Met. The arias from Cosi Fan Tutte here - Soave sia il vento, O Guarda Sorelle and the fiendishly difficult vocal showcase "Come Scoglio" with its vertiginious scales are all fine samples of Miss Price's artistry. She sang Susanna and Donna Anna with beauty and bravura. The Salome excerpt is quite thrilling. She would have made a terrific Salome but the role is quite difficult and it would have surely killed her voice. Leontyne Price was the number one Verdi soprano. Every opera cognoscente will tell you that. When you hear the excerpts from Verdi operas here - Lady Macbeth's Sleepwalking Scene, Aida's arias, Leonora's arias from Trovatore and Leonora's arias from Forza Del Destino, particularly La Virgine Del Angeli and the ravishing Pace Pace Mio Dio- are the best renditions of Verdi soprano singing. Anyone who wants to study how to sing in the letter-to-letter Verdi lyrico spinto style should hear these arias. A voice like Leontyne cannot be easily imitated. Maria Callas's own voice can be imitated as Romanian diva Angela Gheorghiu has proven. Leontyne was in a class of her own, a voice that is both dramatic and beautiful to hear. However, most people find fault in her lack of dramatic interpretation. I say they're not hearing hard enough. Yes, there is excessive beauty in her singing but she understood that the opera heroines should sound beautiful because they are beautiful and though I never saw her on stage, from the recordings I hear she sounds dramatic and character-driven enough for me to be satisfied. For a devoted fan of Leontyne Price, this album is the Holy Grail. She sings the most beautiful Norma, Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Aida, Violetta, Madame Lidoin, Suor Angelica, Susanna, Dona Ana, Gilda, Fiordiligi, Desdemona and countless other heroines. The last cd is a collection of Gospel, spirituals and patriotic songs. These "American", non-opera selections find her in beautiful voice and she is actually paying tribute to her roots. She was not only African-American, but a Southerner from Mississippi. Her voice must have been heavenly to hear in Church! This is the album that made me love Leontyne.
Price At Her Peak.......2005-05-02
Originally a Gospel singer, Leontyne Price rose to the heights of operatic superstardom in the 60's and 70's. She enjoyed the same success Maria Callas did in the 50's. Although Callas will forever be most people's idea of the greatest soprano of the 20th century, Leontyne Price was not a force to be reckoned with. In my opinion, and this is just me, she outshone Callas and was the greater singer as far as techinicality and musicianship. Leontyne Price's best work is recorded in this album. It is her best album, together with the Prima Donna Collection. The price is expensive but it's worth every penny. Prepare to be riveted and blown away by the dynamic strength and passion of her voice as it blasts through yours stereo. While many often point out that Leontyne Price was not much of an actress, from a purely operatic/vocal level, her voice was faultless and virtuosic, powerful, passionate, beautiful, lyrical, soulful. Never have I heard a soprano so richly endowed with strong chest register- she could sing the low octaves that are found in the roles of mezzo-soprano voices or contralto voices. But she was a dramatic soprano and that's dramatic with a capital D- all the high C's were there, perfectly in place, and she was a thrilling singer when reaching for the stratosphere with her voice.
This album contains arias from operas that I didn't even know she performed- La Traviata (yes, Leontyne Price as Violetta is a moving and powerful interpretation, executed with sublime beauty. She finds herself the equal to Callas in the role- for Callas had a big voice for a role that calls for the "dying" effect. Thus, Price, like Callas, could sing roles that call for beauty and not just dramatic vigor. It's unfortunate that unlike the stars that were rising in her time- Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills and Montserrat Caballe- Price never mastered the bel canto repertoire - Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini (although she sang a sensational Norma, excerpts are found in this recording). But her strongest suit was Verdi. She had the voice Verdi was looking for in a soprano- rich, dramatic, beautiful, able to fill up the lines with smoky and velvety hues and a gleaming high top. Check out her Amelia in Un Ballo In Maschera, her Leonora in Trovatore, her Leonora in La Forza Del Destino. Of course, her greatest role, her signature role, and one which she connected with on a personal/ancestral level was that of Aida. The first selections in this recording are from that masterpiece. As Aida, she was at her best. It was easy for her somehow, when most other sopranos tackle the role with difficulty. She conveys grace, nobility, passion and spirituality in the role of the tragic Ethiopian princess.
Further roles she excelled in that are on this recording is Desdemona in Otello, which she sung opposite Placido Domingo. Their masterful voices blend together harmonically and gloriously in the Act 1 Love Duet. She's quite the ground-breaking artist. Most Violettas in Traviata or Desdemona in Otello are Caucasian lyric soprano (Desdemona was white, Otello was black, that was Shakespeare's intention) but in opera, race does not matter and Leontyne Price's voice made her a star in a time when it was incredibly difficult for a black woman to sing opera. From the start of the century, opera was always associated with white Europeans and later on Americans. But Leontyne Price followed the inspirational example of the gutsy contralto Marian Anderson, who suffered a lot of rejection in opera due to skin color in pre-Civil Rights Movement 30's, 40's and 50's. Finally in the late 50's, Anderson, after a lifetime of singing only in private concerts and recitals, debuted at the Met as Ulrica in Un Ballo. Leontyne Price immediately picked up where she left- singing all the soprano diva roles typically associated with white singers - especially Tosca. Her Tosca is second to her Aida. As Tosca, she encompasses the diva who dies for love in the most thrilling way.
Other than Tosca, Puccini heroines were just as magnificent vehicles for her voice. She sang Madame Butterfly to great acclaim. I dont know how she did it but she suddenly ceased to be herself and became the frail, naive, lovesick Japanese Geisha. Softness and fragility is also mixed with the maturity of a woman in love, with passion and dramatic vocal color. She sang La Rondine with equal success, though this role is more along the lines of Violetta/Traviata. She sang Suor Angelica, she sang in modern works such as Barber's Antony and Cleopatra- in that infamous Zefferelli production- she sang Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, she sang in Dialoge of the Carmelites. All these are on here, along with her Baroque specialties- Dido in Dido and Aeneas. Her Mozart voice is also the best I've heard, really, even with a more dramatic and beautiful charm than other singers I've heard. She sang the acrobatic role of Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte, both Dona Ana and Donva Elvira in Don Giovanni. I prefer her as Dona Ana, she is all fire, despair, intensity and repressed desire, but she sings a hysterical and lovesick Elvira with a passion as well. She even sang the Countess in Le Nozze Di Figaro. But the sky was the limit to Price. She even sang, in a Jessie Norman way, the Wagner role of Isolde. Her "Liebestod" is the greatest I've heard since Birgit Nilsson, with a passion that stemmed from her religious Gospel heart.
This is a great album and I recommend it to any fan of Price and any fan of opera in general. If you have never heard Price and want to start somewhere, start with this one. This one or the Prima Donna Collection.

Price is amazing. I will have to also mention that Joan Sutherland in the 1960 is even more incredible, if that's possible. Check Dame Joan out, you will not be sorry. But Price is a D flawless diamond set by Cartier, in my opinion.
the greatest american soprano of the 20th century.......1999-12-12
This collection of arias, art songs, and spirituals is truly amazing for the sheer breadth and depth of this soprano's artistry. It is hard to imagine any Verdi soprano after Ms. Price who could offer us the smoky richness of her vocal color, and there are so many wonderful selections, many of them being roles she did not perform on stage. Among my personal favorites are her scene from Dialogues of the Carmelites, the Letter Scene from Eugene Onegin, and the drama of her Lady Macbeth. For those of us who heard Ms. Price over the years in opera and concert, this collection brings back wonderful memories...It is truly a must-have for any serious opera lover.

This is one of the Pixies albums that I rate the highest. I love the Pixies and have all the albums. Out of all of them, this is my favourite. You get a taste of them in every way. I will always recommend this album to everyone.

'Swonderful and Fascinatin'.......2001-09-24
A slim volume of Gershwin's own arrangements of his popular songs exists, and has been recorded by many pianists. Unfortunately, these arrangements exist for only a scant few of Gershwin's songs, and they are rather abbreviated and dare I say it? Unsatisfying. Enter Jack Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons has meticulously researched George Gershwin's own playing of these pieces, from old radio shows, movie soundtracks, and other archival sources and he plays them exactly the way the composer did. He kids you not about "authentic". This is about as close as you can get to the source, and the recorded sound is spectacular. Bravo!

Most people consider Doolittle the definitive Pixies album, but to me, the raw Surfer Rosa is the best. Together with the Come On Pilgrim EP, they chronical the birth of one of the great American bands. Power-pop and punk influences abound, much like they do on the albums of contemporaries the Replacements. But where the Replacements reveled in sins of the flesh, the Pixies inspiration was creeping madness. "The Holiday Song," a highlight of the CD, unleashes two minutes of warnings against evil and incest. "Nimrod's Son" comes out and explicitly lays evil and incest out for all to see. Within seconds of the album's opening, Black Francis is spewing forth soliloquies on molestation with manic joy in his voice. When Kim Deal takes over the vocals, on "Gigantic," it to tell a tale of voyeurism and teenage sexual discovery. All in all it's a joyous, disturbing collection of songs that formed the first blast of energetic music from the Pixies and paved the way for later journeys into Black Francis's twisted mind. Enjoy!
