Bloodletting
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Concrete Blonde's best and most mainstream album benefits considerably from a stronger focus and good production. Consistent songwriting means a lack of weak material, and the dark inflection of most of the music gives the songs an edge. The title track remains a favorite of the goth set, though it was the hit single "Joey" that garnered the most attention. The up-tempo songs are the best; "The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden", "Days and Days", and "The Beast" really stand out. Of the slower songs, "Tomorrow, Wendy" has an irony that gives it an edge. Concrete Blonde's later albums don't really measure up to the quality of this one. -- Genevieve Williams --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

A prototype goth album.......2007-01-05
I haven't heard any of the group's other albums, but I recently got around to "Bloodletting" after finding it for cheap. I had heard the title track which was pretty memorable and one my parents had listened to when I was pretty young, as well as "Joey" and "Tomorrow, Wendy." The latter is so stand-out-ish. It's disturbing yet beautiful and I don't know what draws me into the track. It has such a cynical view on the world, yet somehow it really appeals to me.
However, I will give one warning: If you don't like dark music that is also humorless, you're not going to enjoy "Bloodletting." Aside from the fact that it arguably takes it self a bit too seriously, and some tracks come off as rather average on here, but there are plenty of great cuts -- particularly "The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden" and "Darkening of the Light." It is well written and performed, though.
Outstanding Album.......2006-12-18
Concrete Blonde is a 3 piece band consisting of James Mankey on guitars, Paul Thompson on drums, and the incredible vocals of Jeanette Napolitano (she also played bass). The band never got huge, but had a solid loyal following. "Bloodletting" was probably their commercial peak and contained the single "Joey" which received significant amount of radio and MTV airplay when it came out. The song is a good one about an alcoholic, but is not very representative of the rest of the album. Concrete Blonde is often described as a Goth band. Whether or not they are true Goth is debatable, but their music is certainly dark and haunting with the subject matter of vampires, darkness and depression prominent. There is really not a bad track on this album. Napolitano's vocals range from a low growl to soaring heights as her voice weaves itself around the melodies. Guitarist Mankey is an expert at weaving dark textures that invoke a sinister air to much of the band's music. Highlights include the title track "Bloodletting" telling a tale of vampires in New Orleans. "The Sky Is A Poisonous Garden", "Caroline", "Days and Days" "The Beast" and "Lullaby" are all solid songs. The album closer "Tomorrow Wendy" is a powerful statement of loss and dismay. The whole album is strong and worth picking up. It amazes me that this band never got bigger than it did.
CLASSIC UNDERGROUND GOODNESS.......2006-11-02
If you've not heard of concrete blonde you should consider this cd if only for the haunting "JOEY". Their 1st album is probably better, but this one is also a keeper!!
I'm not the "Bookie"

A must have for true music lovers.......2006-03-19
This cd is awesome! Although the lyrics are hauting, the music and meaning stay with you. I have worn out my first cd and need to get another.

Must-Have Metal.......2006-01-08
This is the first Overkill album I heard and have bought, and, as a metalhead with an objective opinion, Bloodletting kicks alot of ass. Plain and simple.
I heard "Thunderhead", "Death Comes Out To Play", and "Left Hand Man" on Pandora.com and I quickly realized I was missing out on something good. A few weeks later, there's a Bloodletting CD in my stereo and headbanging is the word of the day.
There's just something very appealing about this CD. The mixing, writing, vocals, and muscianship all come together to make a very good album.
If you're into any sort of metal, this is good stuff.
4.5 More good Overkill.......2005-02-28
On 'Bloodletting' Overkill displays a stronger thrash sound than they did on some of their late 90's albums, though it is still not a pure thrash album, as it still has quite a bit of groove and a generally darker and more modern sound. 'Bloodletting' is also the most flatly aggressive Overkill album I've heard, with a snarling, nasty guitar sound and some fairly rough production for the era with one of Blitz's edgiest vocal performances ever. It hasn't got as much pure, consistent speed as early Overkill, but it's got quite a lot of thrash in it, and the groove stuff tends to be a bit faster and more energetic than that sorta stuff usually is. All in all, the album isn't as immediately catchy or memorable as much of their other work, but it's got a sorta fire and raw intensity which makes the album work very well. Definitely recommended.
Blitz's performance isn't as varied or strong as he often is, but his more aggressive, less varied style fits the general feel of the album pretty well. The leadwork on this album is really quite stunning, some of the very best I've ever heard on an Overkill album. The drums don't draw too much attention to themselves, but he does a fine job of balancing speed and groove, and they throw in some very fast, effective snare fills. The double bass work is quite nice too. The drums have an interesting sound, very punchy but pretty thin and sharp. Lotsa modern albums have a tough time finding a drum sound that works, but 'Bloodletting' manages it.
'Bloodletting' is a bit front stacked, as it opens with four excellent tracks. 'Thunderhead' is one of the more modern tracks on the album, with a fun, catchy chorus, and a fine mix of speed and groove. 'Bleed Me' is a bit thrashier, a bit faster and still pretty catchy, with a nice, relatively low-key middle break. 'What I'm Missing' is probably my favorite track on the album. It's most notable for the outstanding leadwork throughout the song, and some powerful, raging drumming, particularly during the instrumental breaks. The core of the song is strong too, however, with a particularly melodic chorus. 'Death Come Out To Play' displays the blunter, darker sound of the album, but with perhaps the finest collection of riffs on the album, and a slow, pounding mosh break in the middle. Great vox too. Another very strong track. The rest of the tracks are all good, though not all of them are all that distinct or distinguished. 'My Left Hand Man' has a bit of the classic Overkill attitude, but with the heavier darker sound. Another fun, catchy chorus and a nice, if somewhat pointless introduction. 'Blown Away' is a relatively epic, multipart track with some nice atmosphere and some more melodic vocals to go along with the bruising, generally fairly slow riffwork. 'My Name is Pain' is one of the most energetic songs on the album, with nice gang vox and powerful drumming. It also recalls the sorta sneering Overkill attitude, but again with some more darkness and aggression.
Overkill is good. This album blows away most of the supposed thrash comeback albums that we've been hearing, so check it out.
Don't buy this album..........2005-01-16
unless you already have all the other Overkill albums. This is by far their weakest effort. If you read the other reviews below mine, you will, of course, see several that say this is their best album to date. But if you ever read reviews for any album from any band, most of the fans always say "This is the best (insert band name here) album ever!!!" Why do people do this? Don't people understand that it is possible to be a fan of a band and not love everything they do? I am a huge Overkill fan. I buy all the albums as soon as they come out, and I see them whenever they come around. But that doesn't mean they are flawless. This album has no direction, no originality, no real emotion, and the lyrics suck. The same goes for "Necroshine" and most of "WFO". If you are just getting into Overkill, then start with "Horrorscope", which may be the best metal album ever recorded. If you want something new, then get "Killbox 13", which actually IS as good as all the reviews say. But save this one for last.
kick ass thrash!.......2005-01-02
thrashmeisters overkill show thrash is alive and well in 2000. Making a worthwhile thrash record is a hard task (believe it or not) and Overkill comes out victorious with thrash that just DOES NOT get boring. That's already saying a lot. They just find ways to change up the riffs and atmosphere, sometimes using some groovier riffs and sometimes haunting, melodic acoustics but the end result NEVER seems to have any filler whatsoever. And what's more amazing besides the great job on composition is that all songs THRASH - in other words, songs with great metal momentum to them! You'll be BANGING your head! These days that's a rare treat! The leads shred too - good job Dave Linsk. Blitz delivers a passionate, 100% metal furiosity performance on vocals. He's an awesome vocalist that brings out the thrash assault on every song and every riff. Point is, if you want to bang your head intelligently, this will surely deliver. Thrash lives!
OVERKILL NEVER LETS UP.......2004-12-17
This is one of Overkill's better albums. The production and vocals are more refined than earlier albums but not their best to date. Fast riffs and screaming vocals never let up on 'Thunderhead' and 'Death comes out to play'. First 4 songs are the best part of the album by far. If your into speed metal you won't be disappointed.

See my Review for U.S. Bloodletting album.......2001-02-28
Just wanted to add to anyone out there who doesn't know if they should spend the extra money for the import version. The extra song is under three minutes long. It's a cover of The Animals classic: We Gotta Get Out of this Place.
It sounds like the rest of the album, heavy fast and with Blitz' unique vocals. I like the extra track.
Being a big Overkill fan I naturally had to have it. For the casual fan, it's not necessary.
As a whole, this album is excellent. Read my review for the U.S. release.
