The self-titled EP from Shoplifting recuperates the riot grrl sound with a fervor all their own. Serrated vocals fray over seesawing dissonant guitars, pairing the dark weirdness of Emily's Sassy Lime with Fugazi's now-infamous discordance. The track "Raw Nails Now" has all the markings of a chase scene. It dodges through alleys and vaults over chain-link fences, sidling out from around a corner only to break across a parking lot.

The Seattle-based trio includes former members of the Chromatics, the Gossip, Stiletto, and Soiled Doves. Keep an eye on this band - this EP is hopefully just the start of something much, much bigger.

    Album Description

Shoplifting exploded onto the Seattle landscape in 2003, quickly impacting a music community that had grown stale and apolitical in the wake of gentrification and the decreased visibility of Riot Grrrl and other radical movements. Their debut is a supernova of rhythm, melody, and noise, combining radical gender, feminist, anarchist, and queer politics with a deeply personal vision of individual and collective healing and resistance.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2000-05-31

If you like it the Alternative/Pop Music you must buy this CD, it contains fabulous songs collection, they show How were feeling and How they think, the music is great you will find that they are great musicians and will really enjoy this CD. I bought it when I goes to a Music store and was playing this album, Accidentally I obtain one of my favourites CD's.

      5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2000-03-01

This cd caught me completely off guard when I originally heard it. I bought the single for the Aeroplane song which was great and ordered this album on a gamble. Most, if not all of these tracks are all equally good to that single.

Weird Superman, Aeroplane Song, Moving to California, Anthem for the low in Self Esteem, Kill Your Boyfriend and Postcards From Hell are all fabulous tunes worthy of hundreds of listens.

Funny that this album wasn't huge in England as it's really brilliant. Much like another playful pop group, Ooberman, Straw have the sound to be huge but can't seem to pull it off.

There are only a couple of really quality fun pop groups that can be big in one place at any given time. Had this album been released in 1994 near Parklife it would have been massive.

      best debut of 1999.

5 out of 5 stars Well done lads!.......1999-11-08

I cannot for the life of me figure out why this album did notgo on to do great things. It samples a deep purple song and ablack-and-white Warner Bros. film, it had five (count-em) singles released off of it, two of which Jo Whiley (top brass @ radio 1) proclaimed as being the singles of their week. It is totally accessable pop/rock and its on a big label (Warner). In my 150 cd collection this is without a doubt my favourite. Every single track is deserving of the best band in the world. Straw have created on their debut album a singalong fest. Anyone who likes good popular/alternative music will cherish this record, even if they had to pay $33 because it was on import.
