5 out of 5 stars Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27

It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30

What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.

As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.

Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23

Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

"David Lee who?" is the question posed by this 2 Disc compendium of six years of Sammy Hagar-era performances. "Won't Get Fooled Again" is too obvious and tired a tune to be more than a novelty; better bets are firey renditions of "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Jump" (highlighted by Hagar's Michael Jackson impersonation). --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Van Halen Live, Gotta Love it.......2007-06-05

Van Halen's Live: Right Here Right Now's Album has 24 whole tracks for your listening pleasure. The roaring fans boosts up your momentum making you fell as if you are actually there (if you play it loud enough) These guys were great live! All of their all time favorites and then some are on this CD. The songs you know and love are all in this great album. If your're into rock and roll and don't have this, you need it!

5 out of 5 stars Good But still.......2006-04-29

I really like this album, But maybe it was a little bit ofensive including almost the whole F.U.C.K album. I am not saying that I don?t like it, because I think it is the best Van Hagar album. However, Van Halen has more to perform alive. I think that more songs from the Roth's period would have been cool! Rock N Roll Forevaa!

4 out of 5 stars Albums (not boots, videos) from 86 and 98 tours would be better.......2006-04-06

This is the only one VH live album. It is mostly set list from F.U.C.K. album. It is overall very good but...
1 Mike bass solo is proof of his poor skills
2 Alex drum solo is way too long - who likes drum solos(not talking about drummers:))
3 Cover of the Who is maybe good idea, but why "Won't get fooled...", "can't explain" would be better choice.
Highlights: Poundcake, Judgement day(you can see Eddie soloing:)), Spanked, Man on Mission, Right Now, 316(of course) - it's in fact Eddie's long solo with cathedral, eruption and other licks. But I think guitar solofrom "Live without a net" was even better.
So, it's very good recording, but after watching some videos from diferent VH gigs I think that band was in better shape in 1986 when recording "Live without a net" video. Not to mention VH3 tour.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended for Van Hagar fans.......2006-01-25

In 1993, at the height of grunge and alternative rock, Van Halen released yet another multi-platinum CD with their first ever live album "Live: Right Here, Right Now." Compiled from various shows between 1988 and 1993, "Live: Right Here, Right Now," focuses mainly on the Sammy Hagar era of the band and Van Hagar's first three albums "5150," (1986) "OU812," (1988) and most notably "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" (1991). Hagar's renditions of a couple Roth-era songs, a WHO cover, a few Sammy Hagar songs, and a few instrumentals round-out the album.

"Live: Right Here, Right Now" has a lot going for it. Many of these live renditions sound fuller than the studio versions, especially songs from "5150" and "OU812." Hagar's monologues, although at times long-winded, are generally interesting, especially his speech about living in the moment in the middle of "Panama." The instrumentals are more hit-or-miss. And there are A LOT of instrumentals; a drum solo, a guitar solo, and a bass solo. If you're into that sort of thing you will be well pleased with this release. But if you don't care for long instrumentals and solos, you may find them tedious. A cover of the WHO's "Won't get fooled again," sounds good, an obvious choice it may be.

The biggest drawback of this release is that it focuses exclusively on the Sammy Hagar-era of the band. It would have been far more desirable to have two CDs, the first covering '78-84 shows, (with Roth) and the second covering the Hagar era. But because the Van Halen brothers have always tried to downplay the Roth years and make Van Hagar out to be the definitive Van Halen (see "The Best of Both Worlds") we get a double-album of the Red Rocker without any Diamond Dave. When the band plays Roth-era material, it sounds good, until the vocals come in. As much as I like Sammy, he never could pull-off singing the Dave songs. While Hagar doesn't butcher the Roth songs, they just sound goofy, i.e. "got my ass against the record machine"(Hagar's replacement, Gary Cherone, did a terrific job singing all three eras on Van Halen's 1998 World Tour). Another problem with "Live: Right Here, Right Now" is that there are too many songs from "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge." Even if this had to be a Hagar-only live album, more songs from "5150" and "OU812" should have been included.

While "Live: Right Here, Right Now" isn't exactly KISS "ALIVE," (1975) it's still a pretty good album. While casual fans are advised to stay away, VH fans, especially fans of Van Hagar will enjoy this release. Hopefully someday an official Roth-era live VH album will see the light of day.

3 out of 5 stars Well(3.25 stars)...............2005-11-20

Van Halen's one and only live album,"Live:Right Here,Right Now" is pretty good, but it is what some people will often refer to as "a mixed bag".

As mentioned above, this is one of the best sounding live albums out there, and even though the tracklisting could have been better, this is still decent. It is a collection of Van Halen songs recorded live in about a four or five year time span from when Sammy Hagar was the lead singer of VH,and here, you hear Van Halen perfroming nine out of the eleven songs from Knowledge,as well as four songs from the Roth era of Van Halen("Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love","Panama",and half of both "You Really Got Me" and "Eruption"),two of Sammy Hagar's solo songs("There's Only One Way to Rock" and "Give to Live"),four songs from their "5150" album("Dreams","Love Walks In","Why Can't This Be Love?",and "Best of Both Worlds"),three songs from the Van Halen(Hagar era)album "OU812"("When It's Love","Finish What Ya Started",and half of "Cabo Wabo"),along with a pretty good cover version of The Who classic "Won't Get Fooled Again". Like another reviewer already mentioned, the sound and quality of this live album is so good that it is like a party on a CD,and Michael Anthony's bass solo,Alex Van Halen's drum solo, and Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo(which starts off as the instrumental "316" leading into "Eruption")are all really good and solid, but the problem is the tracklisting. It isn't incredibly bad,but it is missing songs like "I Can't Drive 55"(I know that that is one of Sammy Hagar's solo songs, but if Sammy and everyone else in VH were going to play some of Sammy's solo material live, what was wrong with the idea of including a live performance of Sammy's most popular and most famous solo song on here????!!!!),there should have been a couple of more songs from the Roth era here(probably both "Dance The Night Away" and "Unchained"),and I think including live performances of "Black and Blue" and "Mine All Mine" from "0U812" would have been really cool also and would have helped this live album be better than it turned out(I don't mind the large amount of songs from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge being here, with the exception of "Man On A Mission"). But everything else here is really good, while this is a fun live album to listen to--Sammy,Eddie,Alex,and Mike all do a great job at contributing to that. The booklet accompanying this live album, which has pictures of Van Halen from their tour on which this live record was recorded,is really cool and is a good supplement to this CD.

Bottom Line:buy this live album ONLY if you are a die hard Van Halen fan, like both the Roth and Hagar eras of Van Halen, and don't mind the tracklisting here.

Album Description

Critically acclaimed and respected by hardcore hip-hop fans and MC's alike, Brooklyn native Talib Kweli has established industry standards for lyrical prowess and dexterity his entire career. A member of legendary groups Black Star and Reflection Eternal as well as a solo artist, Talib Kweli undoubtedly ranks highly among the most respected MCs in the game.

4 out of 5 stars Talib drops his best work since his debut RIGHT ABOUT NOW!!.......2007-02-23

I have to say I was very suprised at the quality of this album. After his SLIGHTLY average last album this was a huge leap forward in the right direction. The tracks are all consistently tight with great lyrics and nice production. Lyrics-wise there's very few that spit more intelligent or insightful rhymes in the game right now. Also the amount of producers used actually add to the flavour of the project rather than take away from it through a lack of cohesion. All the joints sound so different yet Talib compliments every last one of them perfectly. Apart from "Ms. Hill", which borders on stalker material and sounds totally unnecessary on this or any hiphop album, the rest is exciting, positive, intelligent, thought-provoking and just straight forward hard skilled hiphop from one of the best mc's of his generation. It starts off with the autobiograpical "Right About Now" which tells the tale of his career so far, followed by "Drugs, Basketball & Rap" which features Phil Da Agony and Planet Asia where all 3 mcs rip the track to shreads. Next is "Who Got It" and "Fly That Knot" featuring MF Doom. Both of these joints are top notch where Talib spits heat and his collabo with MF Doom is off the chain. "Ms. Hill", Ive already commented on so I'll move on. "Flash Gordon" and "Supreme Supreme" featuring Mos Def are two uptempo joints that really lift the album. "Supreme Supreme" was previously on his "A Beautiful Struggle" album as a bonus track and I dug it then too. "The Beast" featuring Papoose is a decent track where Talib comes out on top over a nice head nodding beat. "Roll Off Me" is probably the 2nd best track here after "Right About Now". Its a beautiful jazzy J-Dilla produced gem that Talib sounds sublime on. Both "Rock On" and "Where You Gonna Run" featuring Jean Grae are excellent where blessing the mic is the key element on both tracks. The album ends with the mellow "Two & Two" where Talib laments about all things important to him for over 5mins. The one thing I loved about this "mixtape" was that its not like one. There's no annoying DJ screaming his own name over the joints or cutting them short so he can big up himself after 1+half mins of each track. Its strictly done as a normal album, full songs with no interuptions. In my opinion I think this was his best work since his Reflection Eternal and BlackStar days. Excellent return to form from the thinking fans mc.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece from Kweli -- Nothing but the Best.......2007-01-05

Kweli has consistently provided real hip hop fans with real hip hop music. His music is inspirational, enthusiastic, intelligent and not what you ordinarily hear on the so called hip hop radio stations--which is unfortunate because the masses are being denied a chance to experience real hip hop in its purest form. Kweli is an artist with a vision who eloquently expresses it through music. I recommend all of his CD's but only for the real hip hop fans--you won't hear about drug sales or bling in his music. If you're ready for the deeper meaning, definately pick up anything Kweli has put out.

3 out of 5 stars Flash Gordon & Roll Off Me - WTF???.......2006-11-28

Come on Kwe. Other tracks on this album range from aight to good, a definite improvement from Beautiful Struggle but definately not up to par w/Black Star & Reflection Eternal or even Quality

4 out of 5 stars Decent Mix CD.......2006-09-10

This CD is really a mixtape when you look at it. As with all mixtapes, the beats aren't as good as an actual CD( But what do I know about beats? I actually like Nas' new beats). Talib comes correct for the most part, but the guy can't avoid spitting a wack bar or two. That's alright, since there are MC's out there who would kill to say a weak bar than have a weak song(cough lloyd banks cough). Overall this is a good CD to tide you over until Talib's new CD comes out. When you pick up Kweli's new album, be sure to look out for Mos Def's new album and Nas' new album to hit in November( That's a heads up since Def Jam stopped promoting their best people. Method Man dropped and I've had people cuss me out for not telling them sooner.)

5 out of 5 stars not bad .......2006-07-06

well i seen this cd in the store and thought i would try it out. so i spent my 15 dollors on him and i would have to say its good. the first two songs i really like are ms. hill and drugs, basketball, rap. those are good songs. so i would have to say go and get this cd.

For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11

Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.

The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.

Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.

This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07

Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2006-08-03

I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.

3 out of 5 stars Why..........2006-07-11

I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.

3 out of 5 stars A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25

Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.

The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.

Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

Album Description

Composer, pianist and three-time Grammy nominee David Benoit continues his legendary status as the pioneer of smooth jazz with his latest release, "Right Here, Right Now." Maintaining his signature style of tranquility, Benoit decides to loosen up a bit and add a little funk on this CD. The opening cut, "Watermelon Man" offers Herbie Hancock's classic funk but also embraces a retro-60's sound that Benoit classifies as "funky jazz" or "jazz rock". The title track, "Right Here, Right Now", produced by longtime friend and trumpet player Rick Braun captures the true essence of a David Benoit classic. James Taylor's "Don't Let Me be Lonely Tonight" is cushioned with an intoxicating live jazz treatment accompanied by a 22-piece string section. Benoit's musical selections reflect his attraction for a range of jazz-inflected styles, from contemporary pop to pure bebop, orchestral and hip-hop. On the cadenced "Jellybeans and Chocolate" titled with his daughter June in mind, he introduces up and coming smooth jazz musicians, Brian Culbertson (trombone) and Euge Groove (saxophone). Benoit also features the talents of his live band on the bossa nova inflected ode to Hawaii, "Swingin Waikiki" and "Quiet Room" a touching dedication to his late father.

5 out of 5 stars A No Brainer !.......2006-11-05

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing David Benoit.......2006-01-28

I've been a David Benoit fan since the early 80s, and unfortunately, this latest recording comes nowhere close to the quality of his earlier efforts. I get the feeling this was a contract fulfillment for GRP--I believe Benoit is now with Peak Records, where hopefully he'll regain some of freedom to record the adventurous and tasteful music he's recorded in the past. This latest effort is almost as bland and faceless as most $mooth Jazz on the radio today--I can barely tell this is a David Benoit recording, he's so buried in the mix. Rick Braun's heavy, slick "formula" over-production does not win any points here and, in my opinion, is a lot of the problem with this recording: it panders to the $mooth Jazz crowd, not contemporary jazz fans (such as myself) who value melody and musicianship over fitting a radio-friendly formula. I get the feeling I'm listening to a Rick Braun recording with Benoit as guest artist...and this is not a good thing! For instance, this is the blandest cover of "Watermelon Man" I've ever heard. I'm waiting for Benoit to give us another excellent album like "Letter To Evan", where he displays his considerable piano chops and yet, still gives us memorable melodies of his own, and his unique cover versions of others' tunes done in his inimitable contemporary style. Skip this one unless you're a completist (like I am); if you're just starting out, get one of GRP's compilations, or pick up a few choice gems from his 80s and early 90s catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible,Ska+Originality, best of the Aquabats!.......2004-11-27

Well I picked this cd up last after all of the other three aquabats albums, and I was very surprised. The sound made me want to get up and dance. This cd is very short and more of a ska dance feel, it's classic. Many people disagree when I say this cd is there best, there are only ten songs but Playdough and CD Repo Man are so good plus the fact that Idiot Box and Martian Girl are originally from this cd makes them even more fun to listen to, this cd is essential for Aquabats fans and a ska fan.

Playdough- So catchy! Better than Super Rad. 10/10
Martian Girl- Long, 2nd best song about a Martian. 7/10
Ska Robot Army- A great song! Makes me want to party. 7/10
Idiot Box- Excellent. Slower than the remake but still great.8/10
Pinch & Roll- Wow! Hilarious and a good ska raggae feel. 9/10
Tarantula- A little repetitive but still funny and decent. 7/10
Marshmellow Man- Another great song, sound like the Toasters.8/10
Aquabat March- The only track I occasionaly skip, still ok. 5/10
CD Repo Man- Best on the cd, one of the best Aquabats songs.10/10
It's Crazy,Man! Another great song on the cd, fast and fun. 9/10

As you will see all of these songs on the cd are very high rated with one exception. You probably think I'm just rating these songs high because I just like the Aquabats, well if you don't beleive me then check my other review for the Fury Of the Aquabats or just buy the cd, trust me it's there best.

4 out of 5 stars Evildoers beware...........2004-09-14

Everyone's favorite ska superheroes burst onto the scene with this debut album and it's obvious from the start that they are one of a kind. The album offers up 10 ridiculously catchy ska anthems about, well, basically nothing, but who cares? With songs as infectiously silly as "Pinch And Roll," who needs deep meaning? This is a great CD, but it pales in comparison to their second work, "Fury Of The Aquabats," which contains revised versions of a few of the best songs here. But for fans of the Aquabats, this is a classic CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Debut Effort!.......2003-10-02

As always, The Aquabats have a style unlike any others. They have an excellent sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously. Their songs themselves are also very catchy.

5 out of 5 stars BlossomBat, Aquacadet extraordinaire.......2002-04-22

I love this CD... it is really the best ska cd to have been released in a really long time... NOt only does the music rock, but the bats themselves are super rad.. I met most of them at a concert, along with aaron brackett of reel big fish, but anyways umm for the people who like the bats I suggest you visit their cool website... and become an Aquacadet!!!! its very cool.... oh and this cd has all the classics like martain girl, playdough (which is the best song on the album) Cd Repo Man, Tarantula, just a lot of great songs.... The Bats also do the themesong for a new show on cartoon network, but I forgot the name... All in all I highly recomend this cd and every other cd buy this group... They are the greatest Band EVER!!!!...

5 out of 5 stars BE OPEN MINDED AND TRY THIS CD!.......1999-11-24

This CD is GREAT. A friend of mine, Stevie, suggested this CD, because she told me it was her favorite band. I never even heard of the band before that. NOW It's my new favorite band. It consists of a unique type of music. I can only describe it as, maybe ska, punk, and some comedy. But, really it's neither, because it's better! TRY IT! I GUARANTEE YOU, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!.......2004-07-21

This is a must have for your CD collection, whether you are a country or "pop" fan. It has something for everyone. Great melodies, sweet harmonies, skilled instrumentation; upbeat songs like Right Now and Still, heartfelt numbers like I Can't Be Your Friend and Since When, a stirring anthem in God Only Knows....
And if you ever have the opportunity, see them in person. They did all of their studio work so they sound as good if not better than what you'll hear on the CD.

4 out of 5 stars "Right Now" Woos But Doesn't Leave One Speechless.......2004-03-06

Prime Cuts: I Can't Be Your Friend Anymore, Speechless, God Only Knows

Rushlow, a Tim Rushlow-fronted band, owes more to Bon Jovi or the Eagles than Merle Haggard or George Strait. Rushlow is a tight harmony driven country pop group playing modernized 70s rock occasioned by some fiddle and steel guitar playing. This is to be expected as Tim Rushlow used to share lead vocals with Brady Seals in the late 80s/early 90s country pop group Little Texas. You may take Tim Rushlow out of Little Texas, but you can't take Little Texas out of him. Case in point is the southern rocker "Texas is My Kind of Town." "Texas" is a modern permutation of Little Texas' monstrous hit, "God Bless Texas." With the same Texan imageries, jaunty guitar and tight harmonies, "Texas" brings you back to the Little Texas epoch.

"Right Now," "Sweet Summer Rain" and "I Can't Be Your Friend" continue the Little Texas modifications. "I Can't Be Your Friend" is the most potent of the trio. "Friend," a bitter mid tempo break up song bears resemblance to the Little Texas' smash "What Might Have Been." "Friend" pushes all the right buttons for a nice radio friendly hit. Certainly, Rushlow had been rewarded, as "Friend" had already won Rushlow a top 40 nod. "Right Now," a fast paced rocker with an organic feel is filled with verve. "Right Now" is definitely sonic candy. "Sweet Summer Rain" sounds a little like Little Texas' mid-tempo smash "Amy's Back in Austin," though "Rain" lacks the expressiveness and lyrical creativity of "Amy."

However, the best moments come in the gentler moments. The beautiful string arrangements on the amorous "Speechless" are enhancing: bringing out the lushness of the romantic zest without being overbearing. "God Only Knows," a live-life-to-the-full ballad, is also noteworthy. Not surprising both tracks came from the pen of Tim Rushlow. After his own solo hit "She Misses Him," a touching tale of the disastrous effects of Alzheimer's disease, Rushlow definitely knows how to capitalize on soul moving, teary eyed, maudlin ballads.

On the other hand, not everything works here. There are some really anonymous rockers that are not bad, but not outstanding either. "When She Dances with Me," "She's Out There," and "Still" are examples. Even the aforementioned "Texas is My Kind of Town" may be a patriotic, flag waving Texas tribute, but what does it mean for someone not from the Lone Star State?

I think the main problem is that some of these songs are too predictable. They are either countrified rockers or sentimental ballads. Maybe too many songs come from individuals of the group. Though outside co-writers were sought, it's too in-housed. I pray Lyric Street Records will give these guys another chance, they have potential, but they need to be more adventurous and heed their own advice: "life is what we make it, so take it and live it well."

5 out of 5 stars Rushlow adds a new edge to country music........2003-12-29

This CD was an eye-opener for me. I am usually not as intuned into the country scene, but Rushlow has something else going. It blends a great mix of pop rock feeling with a classic country base. I was impressed that one band could make both an emotional song like "God Only Knows" as well as a fast rocker such as "Right Now" sound so good. I think this CD has something for everyone and you should all check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Tim Rushlow returns!...Again........2003-12-14

You gotta hand it to Tim Rushlow--he doesn't give up. When Little Texas fell apart, he embarked on a solo career that lasted about five minutes (despite a pretty good CD). And now he's back...and he has the potential to last a while...again.

Now, that's enough about Rushlow, the man. He's just one of six talented members in this new band. Rushlow combines guitars, bass, keys, drums, and vocals into a stellar performance. While this CD may be too "pop" for some--if you're a die-hard traditionalist, you might want to steer clear--the songs on here aren't like what you're hearing today, a time when traditionalism is almost overdone. These songs are edgy and pleasing...if not one-hundred-percent original.

"God Only Knows" is a world-weary look at the happenings on this planet; "I Can't Be Your Friend" is a chart-climbing number about a couple who has to decide where to go from here. "Texas Is My Kind of Town" (co-written by the Warren Brothers) is a good Texas/alt-country rocker. "Since When" provides a mournful atmosphere of loss. "Right Now" praises living in the moment.

With the departure of Alabama, country music needs another great band. Will Rushlow fill the position? Right now, it's hard to say. But with their debut album, "Right Now," it appears that--right now--Rushlow has the potential to go all the way.

5 out of 5 stars So Happy It's All Mine.......2007-05-12

When I lived in TX a few years ago I had a roommate who had this CD so she would let me listen to it. I was a white girl living among and dating Hispanics in South Texas. It was so my life at that time!!! My current boyfriend is from Mexico and listening to this together helps us understand why we fight about some stuff. His "normal" and my "normal" are not the same and humor is a great way to discover that. I love George Lopez's style of all of us laughing together at ourselves without bashing anyone or saying one group is right or wrong. I laugh out loud through the whole CD (and had to get the other 2)!

5 out of 5 stars Good humor........2007-05-02

Honestly, when I ordered this, I didn't think it was produced 6 years ago. Lol, George Lopez is hilarious.

I saw his special "Why You Crying" on Comedy Central. I decided I had to get as much George Lopez material as possible. I've been playing this CD in my car for the past couple of weeks and it never gets old. My friends absolutely love it!
