      4 out of 5 stars Knitting Factory.......2003-09-09

"This last one we're gonna do should be familiar to all the cats out there that know the stuff. This is called The Wedding Dance. You know what I'm sayin'?" And with that, Don Byron opens the most danceable track on the album, an old Jewish klezmer tune by Mickey Katz. It is a prelude to the clarinetist's subsequent Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz album.

For years now, an old knitting factory in New York has been a concert club featuring the best jazz from around the world. This is an early sample of some of the fresh sounds coming from The Knitting Factory. Most of the tracks are instrumental jazz pieces, ranging from funky and groovy, to avant garde and free form.

One of John Zorn's many side projects, Slan is featured on two tracks here. Their Z.O.G. is what caught my eye. Do they mean Zionist Occupied Government? What could a song named for Nazi propaganda sound like? Z.O.G. starts with a flurry of drums, and then breaks into Zorn's crazy squealing saxophone. Quite unlike his Masada String Quartet albums, this style is that of his Naked City jazz ensemble. Slan's other track is similar in nature.

You Must Choose by Negativland is also a standout for me. The experimental group is known for stringing sound bites, samples and a variety of musical and non musical sounds and noises together.

The story of a frustrated man who's TV goes on the brink right in the middle of watching The Playboy Channel is so weird that it makes me laugh every time I hear it. On a side note, Negativland also has a version of Tevye's Dream from the Knitting on the Roof album. This is a unique album to have for fans of jazz and for something a little strange. You have been warned.

5 out of 5 stars If Don shines in the studio, he IS the sun live!.......2000-03-24

I was blown away by the sheer power and presence that Don Byron and crew have live. Don Byron has tackled all frontiers of jazz with his other albums, and the ferocity and cohesiveness of his playing and that of his band only increase in this live performance. Uri, as always, is at his lofty best on the keys, and Smitty doesn't disappoint on the drums. Tuskugee Strutter's Ball gives me the chills everytime, with the layers and contrasting emotions portrayed in the drum solo with the piano background. Only six songs, but they can just lay back and blow with long solo sections to do the soloists justice. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD ever recorded.......2000-03-20

I have listened to Don Byron extensively and this is by far the best CD I have ever heard by him or almost anyone else. His clarinet is eclectic and electric and the music sets fire to my sound system

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible soloing--Brilliant!.......1999-09-10

This album has some of the very greatest clarinet solos recorded in all of jazz history. Don Byron is the greatest clarinet player ever. The sparks fly on this inspired live recording.

Panamanian bassist Alex Blake has provided the musical pulse for such artists as Randy Weston, Pharoah Sanders, Dizzy Gillespie, and even Astrud Gilberto and Manhattan Transfer. Here, Blake steps into the spotlight to lead an upbeat live session where he's backed by tenorman Pharoah Sanders, pianist John Hicks, drummer Victor Jones, and percussionist Neil Clark. Sanders sounds particularly good here, playing with a kind of fire that's often missing from his own dates. Blake plays up-front throughout, pushing the music and forcing the players to keep up with his galloping lines and tricky asides, and he even indulges himself with a wild solo version of the Beatles' "Little Help" on electric bass. The band, on the other hand, is at their cookin' best on closer "Mystery of Love," which goes from a bass and percussion intro to a powerful groove, before finishing with a stirring chant. Certainly something to be proud of, this is a very good album from a musician who has spent years working in the shadows of the rhythm section. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars There's A New Sheriff In Town....& His Name Is Alex Blake.......2000-10-27

I was anticipating this release for a long time given the fact that I have been a fan of Mr Blake's work for many years as he performed with one musical giant after another, including but not limited to; Nancy Wilson, Lee Morgan, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Sun Ra, McCoy Tyner, Randy Weston, Billy Cobham, Stan Getz, etc.... I was not disappointed.

Alex Blake has a revolutionary playing style and technique second to none. His innovative combination of strumming, rapid lyrical notations and percussive slaps on the Acoustic Bass are on a level par excellence and distinctly Alex Blake. His Electric Bass Solo on the Beatles classic "With A Little Help From My Friends" exemplifies Alex's mastery of that instrument while giving the listener shades of Jimi Hendrix.

His compositional skills reveal a composer with a unique third eye for melodic originality. Mr Blake has chosen an incredible supporting cast for his date at the Knitting Factory and I recommended this CD highly for all those interested in listening to a Artist/Musician whose talent transcends the boundaries of his chosen instrument.

This recording still sounds as urgent as it did ten years ago. A cracking rhythm section w/the irrepressible Kim Clarke on bass, Bowie's manic trombone and the funkiest guitar this side of Vernon Reid/Kelvyn Bell/Ronnie Drayton. A fine set-list as well covering the evolution of Defunkt from 'Illusion' on. Wonder if they'll ever reissue the brilliant 'Thermonuclear Sweat' album. Makes me yearn for that New York avant-funk scene again.
