The Trees' third and best major-label album wasn't an easy one to make: the band felt compelled to scrap the first recording with producer Don Fleming and re-record the songs with George Drakoulias of Black Crowes and Tom Petty fame. But the creative malaise and personal chaos that reportedly plagued the follow-up to 1992's gold-selling Sweet Oblivion are nowhere in evidence in the finished grooves. Dust is a complex, layered effort that transcends the grunge tag so often hung on the band by emphasizing deep roots in psychedelia and folk-rock that have been obscured in the past by the fuzz and fury. As always, Mark Lanegan's smooth-as-bourbon vocals and Gary Lee Conner's thunderstorm guitars are two of the most distinctive instruments Seattle has produced. But what makes this album special is the ensemble playing and the dynamics: The band seems to have listened to Lanegan's call in "Make My Mind" to "Take a minute just to breathe." Sitars, tabla, harmonium, and Mellotron adorn moving midtempo rockers such as "All I Know" and "Dying Days," adding to a world-weary but overall optimistic vibe. Dust could be considered the combination of MTV Unplugged in New York and From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah that Nirvana was never able to realize--it's a mature, melodic album that doesn't sacrifice the energy of youthful rock & roll abandon. --Jim Derogatis --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Few would claim that Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett is the world's greatest rock vocalist, but he clearly means what he sings. On Diesel and Dust, Garrett and company serve up a collection of solid pop-rock songs that follow the groundwork laid by their early albums. Intrinsic to their sound is a guitars-bass-drums attack spiced occasionally with horns and keyboards and capped with Garrett's throaty vocals. Garrett's lyrics on Deisel and Dust are noteworthy because they are not about love or personal relationships but instead address larger issues. "Beds Are Burning" is a call to return the land expropriated from Australia's aboriginal peoples, while "The Dead Heart" and "Bullroarer" celebrate their rich cultural heritage. Many bands and artists have made some sort of political or social concern apparent in their work, but few have done so as consistently, dedicatedly, and tunefully as Midnight Oil. --Al Massa

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Album by greatest band of all time.......2007-05-11

My single favorite band of all time - nothing will ever come close. This album is a great introduction to their sound. Full of incredible passion, powerful lyrics, unreal guitar solos, and creativity and originality in every song. The popular Beds are Burning is not even in my top 5 songs on this album (Sell My Soul is #1, and possibly my number 1 song of all time. Dreamworld is pretty special too).

If you fall in love with the album, as I did, you can move onto some of their older stuff - 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, or Red Sails in the Sunset are similarly incredible, and even more creative.

The Oils are truly a special band, and 6 years after their breakup, I still pop in my mix CD's in the car when my kids aren't around. I'll never understand why they didn't become as popular as, say, U2 or REM - they are all that and more. But I suppose it makes it that much more amazing for the die hard fans that still rave about the Oils to this day.

Diesel and Dust is the perfect merger of rock and social progressivism. Never has a record compelled me to feel as moved as this one, particularly on songs like 'Warakurna', 'Beds are Burning', 'The Dead Heart', or 'Dreamworld'. Never has anyone described with such power and poignancy the plight of the underclass or displaced minorities (in this case the Aboriginal peoples of Australia) in a manner that anyone can relate to. The evocative words ("The western desert lives and breathes at 45 degrees"), the tones used on Rob Hirst's drums, Jim Moginie's and Martin Rotsey's dueling acoustic guitars on the 'Dead Heart', and Peter Garrett's gravel like edge to his singing on tracks like 'Put Down that Weapon', 'Arctic World' or 'Sell My Soul' evoke the imagery of a band that traveled for miles through sandy hot desert lands in pickup trucks and tried to make sense of their experiences upon returning to Sydney. The music intimates the myriad of emotions that the band experienced after meeting and living among simple people, witnessing their stories of hardship and difficulties and the uplifting hope and dignity they found among them.

The record, despite its serious themes, is life affirming, as the defiantly rocking closer "Sometimes" appropriately underscores. Midnight Oil believes in the redemptive power of the human spirit in spite of the injustice and inequities in our world today.

From a musical standpoint, each song is flawlessly crafted and produced. Warne Livesey does an oustanding job of integrating the sounds of the earth and of the band, with the sounds of electronic beats and synthesizers. This is a modern rock record to be sure, in spite of its folksy songs and socially conscious subject matter. This record and "10,9,8..." were Midnight Oil's finest hours. However, this record has a power all its own, as any time we see hardship, suffering and inequality in this world, all we in the west need to do is listen to this record to understand how it tastes, smells and feels to be in that condition. A remarkable record. One for the ages. Get it if you don't have it.

Somewhere in a back corner of my mind, I foster an ambition in my next life of being Peter Garrett's runt sibling (I mean, I'd have to be a runt, wouldn't I? He's bigger than almost anybody I've ever seen on stage doing rock and roll) and the drummer in the band. That's how involved I get with Midnight Oil's music when I hear it. "Diesel And Dust", probably their most media-friendly album - even if, as an American, you don't get some of the political references (and make no mistake; Midnight Oil's music is not love songs or mundane angst; almost without reserve, it is ALL political) is also pretty much their most tuneful. That said, Peter cannot be said to be singing as much as pushing, growling, and wailing the songs out, albeit in a more or less agreeably melodic way. I could be accused of being not very picky, but personally I prefer voices like that, with genuine emotion and pure guts coming from every note. Pretty, trained singing is really fairly lifeless to me. This is the real deal, raw, angry, demanding your attention. I lived in Australia for a while - where I became acquainted with this music - and got to know the politics behind the songs. Down Under, you have a political opinion and you espouse it, sometimes loudly, but never do you hide your candle under a basket - everybody has a personal view and they're not afraid to let you know what it is. Midnight Oil, along with a lot of Aussie bands, uses their music as a forum, as shown when they set up an ad hoc outdoor performance in front of the Exxon headquarters in New York some time ago. (Wish I'd been there.) "Diesel And Dust" is rife with topical references, which still play well, nearly 20 years on; the genocide over generations of the Aboriginal people - did you know they were used in biological experiments, a lot of them quite deadly, until fairly recently? - ecological suicide, pollution, almost any hot-button topic is not beyond the reach of the Oils. And yet the music is so singable and danceable that they're able to get you thinking about the content before you even know you are. It's hard to pick a favourite on the album - the only song I'm not crazy about, and even then I usually don't skip over it ,is "Whoah" because it's a little draggy. "Bullroarer", "The Dead Heart", "Warakurna" and "Sell My Soul" are probably what I would list as favourites, for the sake of argument and discussion; all of them get my blood moving, and the instrumentation does not take a backseat to Peter's insistent yowls and vocal crescendos. Everything that comes from instrument or throat complements the other. This is probably my favourite Midnight Oil album, because it was my introduction to the band, but it is by no means the only one in my collection. I would have to recommend it highly to anyone who wants to expand their musical inventory - and get a little commentary on the side that is perhaps new to them. And next life, Peter. You don't have far to go to find your drummer.

I just noticed that I reviewed this album years ago, as "A music fan" [October 23, 1999]. Since I've listened to this album again in the meantime, I thought I'd try and do a more informative job this time!].

As per my original review, I have to say that it is an open question of whether this album is the Oils best, or "10-1" takes the honour.

Initially, my reaction was that the album had a killer opening three tracks. On relistening to it, it gets better, as some songs grow on you even more.

Here are my favourite tracks:

Beds are burning: pop/rock classic, melodic and clangy at the same time.

Put down that weapon: sort of in the same vein as "10-1"'s "Short memory". The track is a slow pop song that has a brilliant change of pace...a delicious bass riff veers into hyper, clangy rock, and then returns to a slow send off. Terrific stuff.

Dreamworld: one fan told me that the lead singer was a big fan of The Beach Boys. I'd always considered this song as a Beach Boys style song. It's my favourite song from the album, probably. Not the best intro, but once the harmonies and melodies kick in, it's a terrific pop song.

The dead heart: this is a real sing-a-long pop song. You should find the "do do do do do do"'s really catchy.

Sell my soul: this is the song that has REALLY grown on me-a lost Oils classic, a la "Sleep". I love the attention grabbing, funky opening "I am ready. Let's begin". Again, the song has strong melody, as is usual for quality Oils songs.

Sometimes: probably the best of the rest.

In my mind, I always think of this album as in the same vein as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' "Californication" album. Both albums are immensely strong. This Oils album has really only song which I don't rate that highly, but I can't remember which it is! Californication is like that too, but this Oil's album has stronger songs, and more of them.

Same goes when comparing the Oils "10-1" album with the Chilli Peppers' "Blood sugar sex magik". "10-1" is great because of the four songs on it which form the foundation of the Oils' greatest songs ever. BSSM by the RHCP is also a very good album due to the presence of four songs, but again, I think the Oil's album has the stronger four songs.

5 out of 5 stars they reinvented rock and roll.......2006-06-08

One guy came to me one day and said "listen to that one buddy, it's pretty cool". It was in 1993, and most people had never heard about this band in Europe, including myself.

And it was the great shock. It takes only a few seconds to realize what a masterpiece you have. This kind of thing happens rarely. Such an incredible voice, and this powerful, wild sound, coming from "elsewhere"... They reinvented rock & roll, and they did not joke!
Beds are burning was this kind of song that could appeal to almost everyone, from the hard rock purist to the radio amateur. The melody itself is eternal.
Another fantastic song on the album is "put down that weapon". Musically as impressive as the former one, it impresses also with the passion Garret has to deliver his peaceful message.

There is no weak track on this album. I mean, try any of them alone, and you will have something between "positively inspired" and "awesome".
Every track has got this sense of rough urgency that is the trademark of the group. In the same time the whole is perfectly produced and played.

Just my opinion, in the "ranking game" : Now that I know most of their albums, I would give 5 stars for 3 of them :

    An amazing album, Angel Dust unfortunately has limited appeal, although perhaps "unfortunately" isn't the right word; the record's oddities are also what make it such a fascinating listen. "Land of Sunshine" is a rocker with a foot-tapping rhythm punctuated by insane laughter from vocalist Mike Patton, whose distinctive voice and frequently disturbing lyrics drive the album. To call it hard rock does Angel Dust a disservice; it's far more musically complex than such a label implies. There's the funk-influenced "Midlife Crisis," the ballad "RV" (a bitter monologue from the point of view of a middle-aged discontent sitting in his trailer), the hard-edged claustrophobia of "Smaller and Smaller," and the rock-married-to-electronic-organ "Be Aggressive," which includes positively inspired cheerleader chants on the chorus. Impossible to classify but incredibly entertaining (there isn't a single boring moment on this album), Angel Dust is well worth picking up. --Genevieve Williams

    There is something about this album that is able to uproot the listener and emerse them in a listening experience that is skilled and varied. This album is not for everyone, maybe not for most people even. But this is one of those albums that takes me back to my youth because it did such a good job imprinting on me. I love it. - if you like "good music" and are able to transverse genres, check it out. No matter what your taste, you'll have to give props to a band that put alot of thought into what they delivered as a whole.

    i finally bought this after hearing so many good things about this album. but now that i have it, i dont think its really as good as everyone says. the songs arent funny, the music is boring. the only good song is midlife crisis, and that is still medeocre at best. i dont understand why people like this album. to tell you the truth, i think mike patton sounds terrible on this album. he sounds much better in mr. bungle, and that band is just so much better anyway. the only good thing patton has done is mr. bungle. anything else by mike is not really worth listening too. i dont consider him a musical genius like many others do. there is so much more out there that is so much better than this. i find this album a waste of money. it got two stars for midlife crisis.

    5 out of 5 stars The album that killed FNM's career...........2007-02-12

    ....and secured their musical legacy. The Real Thing was a solid rock/rap mixture with newly hired Mike Patton providing vocals. On Angel Dust, Patton had a lot more creative input, providing his wonderful vocal stylings and schizophrenic persona to Faith No More. It's a joyous ride that after a less than stellar performance initially, has become something of a cult classic and favorite among many newer acts - and with good reason. This album is all over the board. Land of Sunshine reads like a list of fortune cookies (which is the supposed inspiration), while Caffeine is an anthem for Patton's drug of choice, and one of FNM's most energetic recordings. Then there is the occaisonal oddball track showing Patton's range and sense of fun, like RV, which is like a melancholic rant from the stereotypical figure you might find living in an RV. Not exactly bilboard material, but fun.

    Adding to the record were the internal tensions of the band. Jim Martin was having creative differences, yet pumps out some of his best work here. Tensions may have fueld a more agressive record, and FNM would never sound better than they do on this album. It's the bands chemistry - both good and bad - that make this album work. Commercially, this might have not been the hit the record company wanted, but its legacy can still be heard today and it's still a great record to crank up for a drive, barely showing its 15 year old age.

    Patton... His fans love him and everything he does. But to the outside world he is ultimately known for his work with Faith no more. Their album "The Real Thing" spawned a hit single "Epic", then it seemed like they dropped off the map. No they didn't drop off the map; they released an unsuccessful commercial(at least in usa) follow up called Angel dust. This album is crazier than everything they had ever released. The 1st track Land of Sunshine sounds like FNM until the chorus goes into laughing and circus music. Caffeine is one of the hardest songs on the cd and prolly one of the best lyrically. Midlife Crisis was the 1st single, which is my favorite song. RV is funny but is kinda a throwaway for me as is Be Agressive, A small victory. The two songs I just mentioned previously are chalk full of homosexual themed lyrics. Be Agressive: It's hard for me...I'll take it on my knees. You know what I won't go further into detail the lyrics to these songs in particular are gross and kinda distracting to the creativity of the music throughout the cd. There is enough good tracks like "Everything's Ruined" to almost redeem its missteps.

    "If you'll gather 'round me children, a story I will tell," sings Woody Guthrie in "Pretty Boy Floyd." Children of all ages have never stopped gathering 'round Woody Guthrie since he recorded these songs in the spring of 1940, and that most-famous line tells us a lot about his approach: his songs are for all people, simple and direct enough to be understood by young ones, irresistibly catchy, yet devilishly clever and cutting. His ability to boil down complex emotions and issues to their very core has rarely been matched. "So long it's been good to know yuh," he sings in "Dusty Old Dust," and its childlike sing-along quality only serves to reinforce his very serious points.     this is my favorite woody guthrie disc. the entire asch recordings series is wonderful, as well, but this cycle of short stories told through the medium of the folk song, about the Oakie migration during the great depression, is simply a riveting work of americana music. "tom joad - part 1 & 2," is my all-time favorite guthrie performance. its rhythmic drive, intensity, devotion to detail, and grand narrative structure make it one of the finest achievements in all of american folk music. this whole album is a stark and glorious achievement. mr guthrie's voice was singular, a voice with personality, full of feeling for the downtrodden, for the victims of unrestrained capitalism. no music collection should be without a healthy dose of woody guthrie. if yours has a hole in it where mr guthrie should be, this album makes for a perfect introduction to his work.

    I am a sixth grade teacher who is doing a novel with my class that is set during the Dust Bowl. So many of the songs deal with topics in this book and I have been amazed how responsive my students are to this music. It is requested everyday during work time.

    Woody Guthrie Dustbowl ballads is a historic folk classic. Woodys playing is good on gutiar and harmonica his voice is steady the songs are real good for the time. Woddy tells the story of the dustbowl with a keen sense of humor mostly. Pretty boy floyd Blowin down the road vigalanteman and the TomJoad songs show some anger. but Dirty old dust Dustpneumonia blues and Talkin dustbowl blues are funny. I aint got no home is my favorite. The booklet really is interesting Woody tells his story. im glad i got this.Great way to get to know Woody Guthrie.

    Though Assembly of Dust is definitely most successful in live settings, Recollection proves that a once stereotyped New England jamband can indeed produce a truly accessible, yet mature record without the incessant and seemlessly directionless noodling thats commonplace amongst other jamband's efforts in the studio.

    Therefore, let me establish the fact that Recollection is neither a jam record nor the product of a jamband. It is, on the contrary, an album showcasing Reid Genauer's honest songwriting ability, the band's undeniable musicanship, and perhaps most importantly, how dramatic a change can be in a band's sound from one album to the next. Check out "Whistleclock," "40 Reasons," "Truck Farm," and "Grand Design" and see how authentic their tunes can be. They have an uncanny ability to turn the switch on/off from hard-hitting rock and roll suitable for frat parties to somber ballads about love, hardship, and fate. Nevertheless, the quintet is at its most tight point since their inception in 2002 and with a heavy touring schedule ahead of themsleves this summer, hitting every festival from Wakarusa to Gathering of the Vibes, who knows how long it will take for this unit to fully reach the potential that everyone knows they have.

    This wasn't a good suggestion from a friend of mine to buy this.
    I couldn't appreciate the melody of these soft songs not made for my years 70's rock generetion. Other are my preferred guitar players: Clapton, Townshend, Lee, Gallagher, Springsteeen, Hendrix etc. and other are my beloved rythms.
    I'll be happy in providing Amazon with comments about other better purchases.

    On my first listen through this CD, I was enjoing the plentiful hooks, tasteful musicianship, and wonderful harmonies. Then, digesting the CD again, I started to play "Name the Influence". What a list! For instance-
    Track 1, Grand Design, is very reminisicent of the Band.
    Track 2, Telling Sue - sounds as though 1971-era Grateful Dead is playing the Phish song "Back on the Train"
    Track 3, Zero to the Skin - this is influenced by Billy Joel channeling John Lennon on Billy's song "Scandinavian Skies"
    Track 4, Whistle Clock - Steely Dan with the Pure Prarie League singing harmony
    Track 5, Samuel Aging - Mark Knopfler playing guitar for the Outlaws
    Track 6, 40 Reasons - Neil Young through and through

    etc. etc. With echoes of Little Feat, and maybe some Alan Parsons. Whipped up into a very pleasant souffle of good music. Tasty to the ears, and each song is distinctive. The only complaint is that, for a CD that's only 47 minutes long, the vocals start to get a little monotonous by the end. And there's no extensive jams like on their previous CD 'The Honest Hour'. But the songs are tight as a result, which is also pleasing. So a very nice album that I'm sure will get a lot of listens.

    Reid Genauer, Nate Wilson and the gang have done it again... beautifully crafting songs that paint pictures in your mind so bright you can see them come to life as you listen.
    From beginning to end, this record really holds you in and never lets go. And, like other timeless albums, the more you listen, the better it gets.

    For years before the release of Exit Planet Dust, the production duo of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons were cranking out slabs of the biggest sounds around on the U.K. label Junior Boys' Own.     Context: probably my favorite urban/dj/mix artists are Thievery Corporation, and I also like several others like K&D and some stuff from Crystal Method. Someone recommended this CD to me after a discussion where I mentioned I really liked the Fight Club Soundtrack from the Dust Brothers. I was told these guys are in a similar groove to the Dust Brothers (and in fact some of the reviews point this out I think), but to me it's almost apples and oranges. The Dust Brothers' sound is less urban-electronic sounding and in general less repetitive than many of the sounds mixed into this work. Even though it's electronic, it sounds more organic on a certain level more like something akin to human extreme human emotion put to sound

    I don't regret having Exit Planet Dust in my collection, but if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't buy it.

    This is a good cd. I bought this cd shortly after i bought Dig Your Own Hole. Dig Your Own Hole had its own highlights but this isnt about DYOH. This is about the beginning. The death of dust and the reincarnation of pure elation. About Chemicals man! To get you to buy this CD i will run you through the first 6 tracks.
    First track: Leave home: Its always difficult to start off new but its also chance for a fresh start. The Chemical brothers knew this. 'The brothers' gonna work it out' they chant over and over again working tirelessly puting time, effort, love and creativity into this track to build your soul up. Slow but reassuring. You know that something bigger is going to come.
    Second track: In Dust We Trust: A roller coaster in the dark. A bit shakey and a little unsettling but the Chemical Brothers know what they are doing. They have a plan. The ride is a little rough and your skin calluses but its okay. Youll be fine in the long run. This is training.
    Third track: Song to the Siren: a sweet voice serenades you but you realize that there is still danger ahead. The siren lulls you towards the unconscious yet you hear another siren from the oncoming police. You're caught between the two. you want to run, you want to dance, but you can't decide. Its too late though. It doesnt even matter anymore. Its okay. Its okay because the siren says so. You delve into your head and you are lost. Nothing is guiding you anymore. your soul swims in murky waters.
    This is a sign that you are currently on the Fourth track. Three Little Birdies Down Beats. The world is not yours anymore. Nothing is tangeable. People, things, spirits pass you and you call out but nobody hears you. You cant do anything but then again, why would you want to? This is enlightenment. Don't try to stop it. Just go with it. And suddenly the ground starts to shake.
    Fifth track. F*** up Beats. The earth is torn out from all around you. There's nothing left to stand on. What The F*** is going on!?? you ask. And god notices you. What The F*** are you doing here? He says. but you do not understand his speech. His language is foreign and you realize that you're not even dead yet. The large hand belonging to whom you recognize to be god engulfs you and there is nothing but darkness for a period of time.
    Sixth track : Chemical Beats: Awake. Alive. You realize that before this moment you were dead. But now you live. Chemicals flow through your veins. Your heart pumps adrenaline throughout your body. Your chakras are unlocked. The pineal gland releases enlightnment fluids that touch every cell of your being. And you are complete. All of mankinds potential has come together and has been crammed into your fragile human body. The entirety of the suns energy has been pounded into you and you look like you might explode at any moment but you dont.
    And just like that its over. Well not really. There are still 5 tracks to go. And they're good tracks let me assure you. But you will know them soon enough. Music really shouldn't be written with words anyways.

    I recently went back to this one after losing my copy a couple of years ago. I have to say that this album blew my mind then and still does now.

    This album was my personal progression from the "old" order of electronica to what we know and enjoy today. "Song to the Siren" in particular is one of the most amazing tracks in my collection, even all of these years later. (especially impressive because it is a LIVE track. Listen and you will be amazed) There really isn't a bad track on this album. It holds up surprisingly well , even in 2005 when only the greatest of electronic albums can age more than a year or two without sounding horribly dated.

    I eagerly awaited all things Chemical from the moment I bought this one waaaay back in the day (95 or 96 , I forget, as anyone in their 20s during that time probably would have, heh-heh)
    This is the part that the fans will probably hate- I never heard anything that they did that was half as good as this album. Seriously. If you are a big fan of "Dig your own Hole" or any of the newer albums I don't know if you will dig this one. It almost sounds like a fluke to me compared to everything else they did. I was so stoked on this album I was buying every single they put out , every other band on Astralwerks , everything possible in hopes of matching this milestone album. ( at a time when I didn't have two pennies to rub together , mind you. )

    Bottom line, I don't think the Chemical Brothers ever lived up to their potential, based on this album. I think they sold out with their electronic/rock crossover thing (Noel Gallagher vocals on the following album? Huh?) and ran with it. Good for them.

    Buy this album, which should be an exhibit in some sort of museum - "Progression of Modern Electronica- early to mid 90's" with The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld , Freaky Chakra's Low Down Motivator, Single Cell Orchestra's self titled debut and Children of the Bong

    The last time Bruce Springsteen ventured West for inspiration, the result was the desolate Nebraska and its tales of serial killers and used cars.     The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (1973)
    The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street ShuffleAfter a folk-rockish debut album that bubbled with ideas and dense lyrical play, this is where Springsteen began to find his voice as a rocker and as a songwriter. The prisoner-of-love romanticism of "Rosalita" and "Incident on 57th Street" hinted at what was coming, and this early version of the E Street Band--jazzier and more spare than later versions, thanks largely to David Sancious's piano--sounds great, if a little ragged, these many years later.


    Born to Run (1975) and Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)
    Born to Run Darkness on the Edge of Town These two records, which belong on any compilation of the top 100 rock albums of all time, sketched the themes that he would spend his whole career chasing, and defined the expectations fans would bring to his records ever after. The first chords of "Born to Run" sounded like freedom itself the first time I heard them on the radio, and the album lived up to them. "Thunder Road" is still the greatest rock & roll love song anyone's ever written. The record sounded so big and impassioned and propulsive it was easy to miss the dread running underneath it. Darkness... put the dread front and center. There are more of his best songs here than anywhere else, even if the sound is muddy and leaden at times.


    Nebraska (1982)
    NebraskaAfter The River (the best record that didn't make this list) and the ensuing tour answered his rock & roll prayers--he was a big star now, not just a perennial critics' favorite--Springsteen holed up in a rented house on the Jersey shore, where he wrote these songs and sang them into a four-track recorder in his living room. The tape was supposed to be a demo for the band, but after several false tries he concluded that the tape he'd been carrying around in his pocket was the record. Quiet and bleak, Nebraska nonetheless grabbed you by the collar and made you listen as surely as his rock & roll records ever had.


    Tunnel of Love (1987)
    Tunnel of LoveThe glare and hubbub surrounding the Born in the USA tour (the tour was great--the record itself overrated) made him pull back again, this time to write a cycle of songs about love and fear and self-doubt. After this, Springsteen's first marriage broke up, and he started a family with Patti Scialfa, disappearing for the better part of 10 years, notwithstanding the pair of not bad, just disappointing albums he released in 1992, Human Touch and Lucky Town.


    The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995)
    The Ghost of Tom Joad Some call it Nebraska II, but his second acoustic album was not a repeat of his first--the characters and settings had changed, and their circumstances were more expressly desperate, and social--though it did share the same interest in what happens to people whose isolation or marginal status renders them invisible.


    The Rising (2002)
    The RisingEverybody--including Springsteen himself--seemed to think it was a record about 9/11, but the subject was broader: death and loss as seen from more than halfway down life's road. Dave Marsh nailed it: "A middle-aged man confronts death and chooses life." Brendan O'Brien's production sounds great.

    Love the album! I enjoyed every song, especially "Devils & Dust" and "Long Time Comin." I honestly think that this is Bruce' most creative album yet. Good work Bruce!! Keep it up.

    As for the dualdisc issue, I have nothing to say because I bought the imported version for the same price to assure myself that I would be able to listen to this on my Ipod. I suggest all of you do the same if you want to avoid any problems.

    Bruce Springsteen's Devils & Dust (2005) is an album of stark, intelligent songs with individual characters in each one. Sometimes Bruce portrays these characters himself, and other times he tells their stories. The people in these songs aren't living the American dream. Some just haven't made it yet, and others have had their lives shattered. Some, like the Mexican husband in Matamoros Banks, who dies trying to cross the border into America, never will. For the most part, these are scarred, broken lives, and even though most are fictional, they are real lives, lived by people with real feelings, and real dreams, just like you and me. Spingsteen makes his characters come to life, in a very personal way, just like John Steinbeck did with similar characters, in his novel, Cannery Row. Other than Jesus, who Bruce depicts as the very real, and very sensitive Son of God, in Jesus Was An Only Son, the people in these songs live in the poor, forsaken part of American society. If you judge people who are less fortunate to be inferior, this album will smack you right between the eyes. If you don't have it in you to empathize with these folks, or have a pathological need to always blame others for their own misfortune, these songs won't have any meaning for you at all.
    Musically, the album is mostly acoustic guitar based, with a lot of harmonica, but nothing like Springsteen's Nebraska. Where that album was stripped down with only guitar and harmonica, Devils & Dust is also colored with mandolins, dobro, fiddle, electric guitars, drums, female backing vocals, piano, organ, horns, and an orchestra. The songs are dark, the songs are real, and the songs are very emotional. They fit Springsteen's voice well, and the musical arrangements fit the songs perfectly. Devils & Dust is a brilliant album, that may take a few listens to fully appreciate. If you don't like it at first, don't give up, just keep listening (while reading the lyrics) until it registers. When you do find meaning in these songs and characters, you'll be very satisfied that you took the time to understand this rewarding Bruce Springsteen album for the thinking man (or woman). Devils & Dust is The Boss doing what he does best. By looking at a small part of our world, we can see the whole universe with more clarity and compassion.

    DEVILS & DUST continues Springsteen's occasional forays into the land of Woody Guthrie; Bare bones musical settings and telling stories that touch on the human condition. This one is more successful than the painful TOM JOAD, but it still suffers from a sense of ennui.The title cut with line s like "Fear's a powerful thing It can turn your heart black you can trust," is a memorable opener and the bitter taste of "Reno" lasts for a long time, but the overall effect is still one of Bruce reaching back for what he found on NEBRASKA and coming up a bit short.

    In a bordering-on-brilliant idea, the overseers of The Spawn soundtrack proposed an idea to a host of bands that went something like this: "you metal kids go play nice with the electronic geeks and maybe you'll make beautiful music together." Well, guess what? It happened. From the sexy, screamy sounds of the opening cut "Can't You Trip Like I Do" (courtesy of Filter and The Crystal Method) to the funkified "One Man Army" (Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello mixing it up with The Prodigy), the disc is as hot as the Spawn's home and twice as heavy as the monster himself.     This is a good soundtrack. "Trip like I Do" was the main reason I got it. I found out I got a lot more too. Marilyn Manson with Sneaker Pimps, Orbital and Kirk Hammet, Butthole Surfers and Moby, Metallica and DJ Spooky. All these tracks are good. It starts to wind down and lose steam with the last couple of tracks but this is a good investment. If you enjoy the musical fusion of different styles than check this out, also check out the Judgement Night soundtrack

    I don't get all the rave reviews here. I've owned this CD since it came out in 1997 and its been probably more than 5 years since I had a desire to listen to it. Now listening to it trying to figure out what I want to put on my I-pod and I really can't find anything other than the 1st 2 tracks, which are great. The Filter/Crystal Method track is a classic. But beyond that I just find the songs somewhere between mildly interesting and boring. I am a fan of many of the rock & electronic artists here, but this experiment just didn't pan out in my opinion. It's been 10 years and I haven't seen any other collections like this so I must not be in the minority. Nice try, but there is not much more here beyond the concept.

    I was a big fan of Spawn before I got to be a big fan of music. When I found the soundtrack in a garage sale, I jumped on it and had listen it almost a thousand times!! ...When I realized I had a special one: instead of "For whom the bells tolls" of Metalica on track 6, I have "This is not a dream" from Apollo 440 and Morphine, and I must admit it's my personal favorite track on the album!! I'm glad I didn't bought the American version.

    Spawn is by far, along with the original Batman starring Michael Keaton, the best comic book remake movie ever. Sadly underplayed, especially to the recent flood of sub-par remakes. Well, not only was the magic and mayhem captured forever on film, the soundtrack played a huge roll in the movie as well, thus making it a vital part of the movie that sadly, now, has seemed to become a forgotten craft: That is of course, the lost art of producing a Great movie soundtrack. Showcasing some of the best and most cutting edge artists of that era, which may have not been very long ago, but nevertheless was a significant time. A time of change within the rock community. A precursor to what would be the short life of Nu-Metal and the rebirth of straight up Rock and Roll, which seemed to split fans right down the middle, and all different ways at that. A cool time and a cool change that was long overdue in the music world. although this is one soundtrack that is definitely dated, it is still a much appreciated and a more often than not listened to addition to my collection. Anyone who loves the movie needs this soundtrack, not to mention anyone who just loves music of the heavier sort, this is an awesome soundtrack.

    This soundtrack knows what it needs to be and works really hard at succeeding...and for the most part it really does. From the explosive first track, Filter and Crystal Method set the bar very high, and for the most part the following tracks, while never fulling living up to "Trip like I Do" still fit the mold and deserve to be listed on the same track listing. "Long Hard Road out of Hell" is a great song, dispite the controversy of Sneaker Pimps regreting having to woek with Manson, they still delivered a brilliant song, and the second best on the album. "Satan" by Orbital and Kirk Hammet as well as "Tiny Rubberband" by the Butthole Surfers and Moby really stand out as quality tracks. The redone "FOr Whom the Bell Tolls" is appropriate subject matter, but all in all I was not overly impressed with the track. "Torn Apart" is brilliant (gotta love Stabbing Westward) and Prodigy's "One man Army" is freaking killer. Closing track by Soul Coughing & Roni Size is decent but I would have closed with Slayer's "No remorse" instead. Here is my HUGE complaint...KoRn's "Kick the P.A." is one of the dumbest songs ever, and with the talent that KoRn has shown they possess this was a waste of a track...They could have done SOOOOOO much better. Incubus and Silverchair are fine and Henry Rollins shows he still has it (never lost it)...so all in all Spawn delivers...they just should have cut KoRn before the CD was released!

    Once upon a time my cousin and I were driving out to my grandma's around 1a.m. I noticed that i was tapping my foot to the music that was playing. Archer Avenue. I loved them, and I wanted more. But how? Well, I found Margot (formerly known as Archer). I love every song they've made. They're all so great. Whatever mood you're in. They make me smile. I'm sure they would you too. :)

    I was introduced to this album when I got XM radio, because they played 2-3 songs off of it sometimes. Whenever I heard a track off of this album, I'd immediately look down to see who it was by, and as soon as I'd heard the third track, I went out and bought the album. Since then, it's been in my regular rotation.

    Every track on this album is enjoyable. Some are somber, orchestral pieces with extremely subtle instrumentals, while others are toe-tapping tunes, but they never lose their full, rich sound. Unlike many albums I've heard this year, it actually stands together as an *album*, not just two singles and 40 minutes of fluff. The sound is just incredibly well-realized, the songs have meaning, and the whole assemblage is, for lack of a better word, musical. The most musical thing I've heard in a while.

    You owe it to yourself to check this out.

    I love music. I like a lot of variety in my music. I love Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, ABBA... I love music and I buy a lot of it. I average 5 - 7 CD's or vinyl LP's a week. So when I say this is my favorite album of '06, thats saying a lot! (at least in my little world). This band exhibits all the qualities I love in my music, in the 21 century. They have a healthy dose of classic rock (heavy in the 70's), a great sense of Pop, and are heavy on the atmosphere. Great guitar tones, great synth tones, great production - never a boring moment, constantly changing and evolving. Just Great Great Music. I can't think of a group of music lovers who would not love this CD. Listen to the samples - but buy the CD. If it weren't for the name these guys would be stars already. Where did you get that name? Slap your manager - NOW!

    My altime favorite song and reason for buying this cd is for track 2 skeleton key. After buying the cd and listening to it throughout I realized that all the songs have a charm and reason to be loved. My least favorite song and the reason for the explicit lyrics tag is for jen is bringing the drugs. The song swears and does not carry the same high standard as all the rest. Make sure to buy the edited one if you care about hearing some swears. apart from skipping track 5 I can say that the cd never left my player for over a week.

    The Trees' third and best major-label album wasn't an easy one to make: the band felt compelled to scrap the first recording with producer Don Fleming and re-record the songs with George Drakoulias of Black Crowes and Tom Petty fame. But the creative malaise and personal chaos that reportedly plagued the follow-up to 1992's gold-selling Sweet Oblivion are nowhere in evidence in the finished grooves. Dust is a complex, layered effort that transcends the grunge tag so often hung on the band by emphasizing deep roots in psychedelia and folk-rock that have been obscured in the past by the fuzz and fury. As always, Mark Lanegan's smooth-as-bourbon vocals and Gary Lee Conner's thunderstorm guitars are two of the most distinctive instruments Seattle has produced. But what makes this album special is the ensemble playing and the dynamics: The band seems to have listened to Lanegan's call in "Make My Mind" to "Take a minute just to breathe." Sitars, tabla, harmonium, and Mellotron adorn moving midtempo rockers such as "All I Know" and "Dying Days," adding to a world-weary but overall optimistic vibe. Dust could be considered the combination of MTV Unplugged in New York and From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah that Nirvana was never able to realize--it's a mature, melodic album that doesn't sacrifice the energy of youthful rock & roll abandon. --Jim Derogatis

    screaming trees dust a great cover and an title to get you too think and it sure does you look at the cover and wonder what the music on the cd going to be like, is it gonna repeat what they've done before? or is there gonna be a big surprise well really you know which way screaming trees make music heartfelt lyrics blistering music with a hint of that dirty word which i don't think kurt made i think soundgarden and mark lanegan made what grunge was really about...
    this album features such classics in my opipion

    witness, traveller and gospel plow,
    this album was released long time after the grunge icon killed himself.. and around this time we had this terrible thing called britpop bought on by them god damn awful bands oasis and blur this was a saving grace that saved the last 4 years of the nineties for me...grunge is dead but the trees still grow

    This is an awesome album BUT:

    The first three songs on this album pretty much start off where Sweet Oblivion left off.. Start of with a rocker "Halo of Ashes", insert an absolute classic "All I know". throw in a ballad "Look at You" and you have the makings of another classic... Then...

    The album just seems to bog down.. Don't get me wrong, this is an outstanding album, but it is not as diverse as Sweet Oblivion. Mark Lanegan never sounded as good as he did on Dust, and the quality of the musicianship is great, but the song writing isn't as good as Sweet Oblivion. You would think that after a four year hiatus (a hiatus that pretty much killed the band) there would be a more diverse collection of songs.

    Probably the most striking song on the album is Dime Western. For anyone who has ever seen Jesus Christ Superstar, if you remember the part where Judas is running to hang himself, the guitar riff in this song sounds almost exactly like the music that is playing in the backround. Throw in an "Iron Butterly"esque melotron and it is freaky.. Then to go into a song called "Gospel Plow"...

    Do I recommend this album? Heck yeah, it's just a shame that this was their swan song, they really had more to offer.

    The Screaming Trees were a great band that combined psychedlia, punk rock and roots rock. And Mark Lanegan was one of the strongest frontment of that Seattle crop. In 1996, they were no longer constrained by the expectations of the waning grunge revolution. So I think they were really in a position to try something different and release their magnum opus. Instead, Dust has 10 catchy, well written rock songs, all of which would've been perfectly at home on "Sweet Oblivion". So, basically, while Lanegan et al were wasting their time with drugs and alcohol, their fans waited four years to get forty minutes of the same old same old. The Trees received little recognition for this effort, and probably got what they deserved. Still, I like the band overall, and would recommend the Anthology from their SST years (or, for that matter, the compilation from their last three albums "Ocean of Confusion", which is a better value than buying all of these good-but-not-great albums individually).

    ADDENDUM: 3 months later, this album has found its back into heavy rotation on my CD player. I must admit that the songcraft is excellent; and this album must be judged a success in relation to its ambitions--although I remain disappointed that those ambitions were not nearly as lofty as the hyperbole of many of this album's boosters would have you believe.

    This has to be Screaming Trees best production ever, why did they have to end at this point of progress......I have no idea. They were on the right track and this album proves it. Mark has his own distinct voice and the music to back it up is their absolute best. Out of all their albums for New listeners, buy this one first. Hear what they became before what they were. They were good then but this album displays their talents matured. Another album worthy of *****.

    In the early nineties pop-grunge seattle based band Nirvana were topping the charts and in turn becoming one of the most populer bands in recent times.A lot of other seattle based grunge bands took this oppurtunity to hitch a ride and become rich and famous.Yet the Screaming Trees stay in the shadows the whole time, this is most unfortunate because in my opinion they were the crown jewel of the whole genre.And even with their lead singer working with some of the most popular bands today eg. Queens of the Stone Age the Screaming Trees still get minimal radio or television play.In my opinion this is the definative grunge album, as well as one of the best rock albums of the nineties.Just buy it I promise you won't be disapointed
