Doolittle

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Yeah, Kim Deal made a big splash of her own, and Frank Black is still holding his own. But as any Pixies fan will tell you, and as Doolittle suggests (like "ten million pounds of sludge" to the head), the Pixies rocked harder than the sum of their parts. They were masters of dynamics (check out "Monkey Gone to Heaven," or "Hey"), moving from quietly subdued to all-out head-banging and back before you could say "la la love you." Black Francis was one of the most unique vocal stylists of the '80s. His duets with bassist Deal, "I Bleed" and "Silver," work the way Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong worked together. And it's still staggering how much Joey Santiago, lead guitarist, could accomplish with one simple, single note. "Here Comes Your Man," by the way, is as straightforwardly poppy as the Pixies ever got, so enjoy it. --Dan Leone --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3 out of 5 stars Later records Doo More.......2007-07-20

Doolittle is almost universally revered as the godhead of the Pixies, but I can't for the life of me understand it. Instead of a fully realized work, Doolittle is instead an incredibly promising work of a band that just hasn't matured yet. The Pixies would go on to produce their masterpiece in Bossanova. Trompe le Monde is also far superior.

Doolittle does have one truly fantastic song -- "Monkey Gone to Heaven," which is a gift. And it has a few good to very good ones, like "Here Comes Your Man," "Wave of Mutilation" and (depending on my mood) "Debaser." But many of these songs (even Debaser) would qualify as filler to people who aren't caught up in the hype. "Lala Love You," for instance, is just some random noodling -- not a song at all -- with Frank Black trying his hardest to create some vocal interest with every whacked out sound at his disposal. Unfortunately, it -- like a lot of the other non-songs here -- comes off as just a little too cute.

If you're new to the Pixies, I strongly recommmend starting with the amazing Bossanova instead. If you're not new to the Pixies, you already own them all, so it really doesn't matter. Any way you look at it, the Pixies were a major force in modern music. This just ain't the best evidence of that.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe so few people know about the Pixies........2007-05-12

But at the same time I'm kind of glad that so few people know about the Pixies. No, forget that. I know I listened to crap before I found out what good music was. Sometimes I need to warm up to a band a little, but with the Pixies it was love from the beginning. This is my favorite Pixies album, I think. But Wave of mutilation is a good CD if you want to listen to your favorite Pixies songs. I don't care what people say about best of albums. They are convenient. Seriously though, awesome CD. You can call them Post-Punk, but I'm always gonna think Punk Rock when I think the Pixies. I never really understood that label. Didn't know Punk was a period of time. Also, I don't you you should review things you don't like.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Album.......2007-03-09

It takes a couple of listens to get settled in (like with most good albums), but once you're there, it's a very enjoyable experience. The Pixies seem to break every rule about song-writing, but that's the beauty of it-- that they are so unique, but still the music is very gripping (notice I didn't say "catchy").

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-02-04

Incredibe album by an incredible band. It's equal parts abrasive, weird and catchy. And yes, all of those things are good. Great, actually. The harmonies, the melodies... Debaser... Tame...No.13...Here Comes Your Man...all brilliant. Especially Here Comes Your Man, which is pop and nevertheless amazing, I dare you not to hum along...

4 out of 5 stars More melodic than screamo.......2007-01-06

This was the first Pixies album I had heard, and it really got me into them. I'm not a huge fan of that type of music, but this album seemed to capture (and keep) my attention.
It's more melodic than "screamo" and dissonant (unlike their first album, "Surfer Rosa").
This is a great inaugural album for the person who wants to get into the Pixies.

Album Description

From composer David Arnold (Casino Royale, Independence Day) comes the sweeping original score to the motion picture Amazing Grace. Recorded in London with some of the world's top musicians, Arnold brings to life the intense journey of Williams Wilberforce and his quest to abolish the British Slave Trade in the UK during the 1700s. Amazing Grace is the story of the famed hymn, its author John Newton (Albert Finney) and the powerful journey of William Wilberforce (Loan Gruffund- A&E's Horatio Hornblower, Fantastic Four) the man who risked his life and followed his calling to end slavery. Wilberforce's dream finally came true around the time of his death. Britain's slave trade was abolished and slaves were finally free. Experience this music journey as history unfolds and the power of one voice changes the world.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate David Arnold Soundtrack.......2007-07-10

This soundtrack tries to make up a lot for the meandering film. Arnold does a good job. However, I think Arnold should just stick to James Bond soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Performance.......2007-05-09

Cannot do better than timely delivery of what was advertised and ordered.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed in the extreme.......2007-04-26

I bought the soundtrack with the hope that the best song on the movie - the bagpipes version of Amazing Grace at the end of the film - would be on it. It is not.

If your objective is to get that bagpipe song, don't get the CD. the other songs are ok, but nothing to write home about.

4 out of 5 stars Arnold's Serious Side: "Amazing Grace".......2007-04-18

Fresh from his well-received score for the latest Bond epic, "Casino Royale," David Arnold has turned to a far more somber and serious project with Michael Apted's important film about the beginning of the end of slavery in the British Empire, "Amazing Grace." This is not the first time Arnold has worked with Apted, note another Bond effort "The World is Not Enough," so we expected the two to be rather comfortable with one another. And a good match it has proven to be this time around. Arnold has produced a score as serious as the subject matter. It is intelligent, moving and at times quite poignant. One might have expected Arnold to simply integrate the well known hymn which naturally plays a role in the story and do a number of variations on it (much like his integration of the Bond theme into his 007 music), but instead he has created his own themes, including an especially haunting main theme, in a fine score. Arnold has proven himself in the action-adventure genres and we have been waiting for a more mature score, having tasted bits and pieces in a host of other works. Here we see that David Arnold is a capable composer across the spectrum. Well produced by EMI, the soundtrack is somewhat disappointing in its packaging; the promotion for "The Amazing Change" is appropriate and deserving of mention, but more could have been done about the film and music themselves. The promo for the "music inspired by the film" is a bit much though given that none of it is actually in the film.

5 out of 5 stars freakin amazing!!.......2007-03-23

bein that this music/movie came from my era, of course im a little biased about teen witch!! but not only that, it was just such a cool movie. the music was always more recited among me and my friends more than any other movie/musical. but now comin out with a MUSICAL... is just pure genious, for those of us "'80's kids" who need our updated teen witch fix!

"Teen Witch the Musical" realy is such a fun and great album. i give major props to all who put it together, and all those amazing kids who sing in it. i just barely got the cd myself, and so have only heard all the songs now. but i cant wait to show it to all my friends who were right there with me watchin teen witch over and over again for "like" the last ten/fifteen years (?! wow has it been that long!) :)

thanks to the cd, i cant wait to see the musical, and finally be able sing all my teen witch faves (outloud) when i go there!

4 out of 5 stars MOVIE WAS HOTTER...BUT MUSICAL IS HOT!.......2007-03-14

The songs were to a slightly different beat; but I have to say that IT'S ABOUT TIME they came out with the music on cd.

5 out of 5 stars OMFG.......2007-03-04

I absolutely love this movie.
I hope i get a chance to see the musical.
Hopefully they come out with the ORIGINAL movie soundtrack but for now this will do. =]

5 out of 5 stars 2 Thumbs Way UP!!.......2007-03-03

The idea to remake this awesome 80's movie into a Musical is sheer genius! I want to be the first person in line when the show comes out! The music in the album is amazing. It's like I'm back in the 80's, only without all the reverb. What more could you ask for? I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album !!!.......2007-03-02

I can't believe they finally came out with an amazing album from my favorite movie!! I don't know what that HEEHAW is talking about with 1 star. They do remakes and updates all the time because after 20 years it would be a little tired to come out with the same old 80's recording. It is the soundtrack from the new MUSICAL! The production and vocals are fantatastic! Hello! I highly recomend this album especially "Finest Hour". And the new song "Fool For Love". For us Teen Witch Fans it is a dream come true! I suggest Mr. heehaw go buy the original recording of Jennifer Holiday in "Dream Girls" while the rest of Amercia enjoys the academy award winning performance of Jennifer Hudson. And I am the first one in line for a ticket to "TEEN WITCH THE MUSICAL"

5 out of 5 stars A big secret. Dig in, you will be pleased!.......2006-08-01

When I was looking for a good American rock CD and a friend reccommended "Little Mystery" by Todd Thibaud I was skeptical. I didn't know the guy, but since I trusted in my friend's taste, I gave it a try. And boy was I surprised! This is an easy CD to listen to. The songs are simple yet beautifully crafted. They got hooks, good melodies, simple but effective lyrics and Todd's voice I find particularly appealing. This is not a huge production with radio hits, but rather a CD full of good songs which by today's standards, it's a rare thing. The band can just play anything from fast rockers like "Suffer Me" or "Don't Save Me It's Alright" to quiet songs like "Anywhere" or "Suppose". Todd's songwriting is especially outstanding in tunes like "Last Thing That I Need" or "Finding Out".

I think it's worth checking this album out. Even if you are not a huge fan, I think you will probably discover yourself spinning it more often than not.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Songwriting -- Power Pop.......2001-02-10

This is a magnificient record from start to finish. Well-crafted jangle pop (of the Connells/del Amitri/Tom Petty mold--and I agree with the previous review regarding Freedy Johnston)songs of a personal nature often about heartbreak and the general struggles of life yet wrapped in a blanket of hope. The songs on this cd have an edge to them, but from start to finish it's all about the melody (and the story within the melodies). Just one listen to "Little Mystery" or "Last Thing That I Need" should be all you need to get hooked. If you dig this cd, you'll definitely want to pick up Thibaud's other studio releases 'Favorite Waste of Time' and 'Squash' or some of his earlier, more keyboard oriented work with the Courage Brothers.

4 out of 5 stars Endearingly human.......2000-10-12

'Little Mystery' is a very genuine, enjoyable release from an artist who clearly enjoys and believes in what he does. This enthusiasm is well justified; Tibaud is armed with a strong, rootsy voice as well as collection of down to earth, catchy songs that will easily endear themselves to most if not all listeners. Songs 1,2,3 and 4 are all fantastic, though the title track does sound very similar to Shawn Colvin's 'Sunny Came Home' (a forgiven coincedence). 'Last Thing That I Need' is a wonderful mid-tempo pop song not unlike Matthew Sweet and Freedy Johnston's best work, while the true peak of the album is left till last in the poignant, chiming 'Finer Things'. The album length could have been a bit shorter, cutting away a few of the weaker tracks in the middle, but that is the only small gripe in an otherwise fine record.

5 out of 5 stars Originality via familiarity.......2000-07-01

The best new sweater is one that looks beautiful but feels like an old sweater. Easy to get into, Little Mystery soon bedazzles the listener with it's superb production values and outstanding content. This is an effort of love and it truly shows. In every song, the emotion is so strong and true that it transcends mere music and becomes personal, intimate communication. Todd Thibaud is busily making sweaters that I won't get tired of wearing.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff here!.......2000-02-03

This is one of those records you'd hear for the first time playing in a club before a James McMurtry show and have to go right out and buy. (after the show, I mean!)

Trish Murphy is a lot like Kevin Welch: she has absorbed the Austin scene's country-folk-rock sound and personal-incident-blown-up-into-modern-myth kind of songwriting. Like Welch, Murphy is a good-but-not-great singer-songwriter and--not to ignore the obvious--very good-looking. After an unusually successful, self-released debut album (1997's Crooked Mile), Murphy makes her major-league debut with Rubies on the Lawn, which leans away from her twangy Texas roots and into the adult-pop territory of Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, and Kim Richey. This is a smart move, because Murphy's strength is melody, not literature. The disc's first single, "Outsider," will be remembered not for its lyrics but for the way Murphy's husky soprano holds out the vowels with such attractive yearning. Whether she's singing about a Vietnam vet, a violent holdup, a restless driver, or an ex-lover, the real message is not in the perfunctory words but in the way her cowgirl-Austin voice hooks up with the creamy, Beatlesque guitars. --Geoffrey Himes

Album Description

After releasing the critically acclaimed 'Crooked Mile' in 1997 on her own label and selling more than 10,000 copies in her native Texas alone, Trish Murphy released this stunning followup on the doolittle/mercury label in 1999.The songs on "Rubies" reveal both a gift for melody and the ability to sketch full portraits or distill complex emotions with just a few lines. If you haven't heard about Trish Murphy yet, ask around. Someone you know has, and what they'll say is bound to be good.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Singer-songwriter blends country and rock her way.......2005-01-14

Trish's music is hard to classify. It isn't country but there are definite country influences. Trish knows how to rock but I wouldn't call this rock music either. Frankly, it doesn't mater what you classify this music as (probably alt-country), it's the quality that counts.

Trish wrote or co-wrote most of the songs, but proved she can do covers too with her great cover of Nancy Sinatra's These boots are made for walking. Her own songs focus on a variety of topics, even including a shoot-out (Sunday). I confess that the lyrics of Trish's own songs are sometimes difficult to understand though that won't matter if you play this as background music.

The album title is taken from a phrase in one of the songs (Vanilla sun), a ballad in which Trish sings about how it's raining rubies on the lawn - one of those hard-to-understand lyrics.

So maybe the lyrics are a bit strange but most people don't listen to the words anyway. The music is great and Trish's voice is amazing - that's enough to make this album well worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars "Rubies" Grows on You.......2000-02-23

The more I listen to "Rubies," the more I love it. I have been listening to it on the way to work (a 30 minute commute) for the last few weeks. It's rare that I find a CD that stands up to repeated plays. It seems I can't get enough of "Johnny Too Blue" and "Vanilla Sun." And "These Boots" nearly puts me into a trance each time I hear it! After checking out this CD and Trish's web site, I saw her perform in Houston. She was incredible live. She reeks charisma and sounds amazing. I liked her so much I hired her to play for our company at an executive event!

4 out of 5 stars These Boots Were Made For Rockin'!.......1999-12-31

On her second album (her first with national distribution), Trish Murphy beats the rock'n'roll pants off virtually every major league femme-rocker (stand BACK Melissa and Sheryl!) with a sly, sexy, SMOKIN' set of sizzlers perfect for machine-tooled highway drivin'! Key cuts include a winning remake of "These Boots Are Made For Walking" and "Me Behind The Wheel", a wonderfully upbeat tune with lots of personality! Nice jagged guitars, propulsive drums, expert production and THAT voice! Absolute joy!

5 out of 5 stars EVEN BETTER!!!!!!!!!.......1999-10-11

After listening to "RUBIES",it`s hard for me to listen to anything else!Loved CROOKED MILE but this is even better. Just wished she received some recognition in the Baltimore area.I`ll do my part!!

5 out of 5 stars This girl can write........1999-09-02

The product of the Texas prarie and a long tradition of great Texas artists, Trish Murphy is an ingenue in size 3 leather pants. Anyone who has seen her live performances has been electrified by her energy, her simple love of the music, and her uncanny ability to connect with the audience. Rubies on the Lawn is a jewel in her writer's crown. Beautifully crafted lyrics settled into tunes that you will carry with you the rest of the day. The songs reflect a soul-searching innocence that is both refreshing and real. And her little-girl voice is fence-post rough, just enough to put the edge on her songs. Don't miss this terrific performance by an emerging Texas artist.
