When flipping through the annals of new-wave history, one can easily enough overlook the entry marked "Human League." But the truth of the matter is, this Phil Oakey-helmed synth-pop outfit was crucial to the movement, and, Dare!, its third release, is an absolute linchpin. Thanks to its breakthrough single, "Don't You Want Me," the record almost single-handedly made it safe to like new wave, and an MTV video gave it a fashionable face that was impossible to ignore. The sound was theatrical, awash in kitschy keyboards, but felt new and refreshing back in 1982. The League would never climb to such hooky aesthetic heights again; Dare! ranks as its greatest achievement--and it still sounds new and refreshing today. --Tom Lanham --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Florida's Mofro know you don't need a studio full of fancy effects to make a funky record. The act's debut CD spins tales from the Blackwater region around "front-porch soul," a stripped-down collection of bottom-heavy beats and hip-shaking rhythms. This is the kind of record G. Love should be making, a flawlessly tight package of funk, gospel, blues, and rock & roll fronted by singer/songwriter J.J. Grey. Although there are a number of instruments filling out the songs--slide guitar, bass, harmonica, keyboards, sax, and percussion--the arrangements all feel sparse enough to create an organic, authentic, easygoing vibe throughout the record. From the early Rolling Stones-esque blues of "Brighter Days" to the mouthwatering funk of "Ho Cake," Blackwater pays the highest respects to this area of northern Florida, both musically and lyrically. --Jennifer Maerz

Album Description

FRONT PORCH SOUL & LIVE "JOOKHOUSE" FUNK from the Blackwater region of North Florida...

MOFRO is led by singer / songwriter JJ Grey who grew up outside Jacksonville, developing a taste for raw grooves and living a life to inspire his soulful lyrics. Blackwater, Mofro's debut release on Fog City Records, maintains the label's focus on musicianship, fat tones and good times, deepened by insights into a place and culture that is slipping away with Florida's steady march to "progress".

Guest drummer George Sluppick (on loan from Robert Walter's 20th Congress) says: "I feel like we've connected with each other on a very deep level... it's funky and groovin', like fried catfish and turnip greens... it's uplifting and spiritual, like grits and bacon... it's Southern to the core. My peoples!"

Special guest: Robert Walter (Fog City recording artist and founding member of The Greyboy Allstars)

Recommended side dish: Pan fried Cracker Meal shrimp with hush puppies.

This is an ENHANCED CD: In addition to more than an hour of boombox-optimized barbeque soul, this CD can also be placed in the CD-ROM drive of most computers for a multimedia experience that includes a full screen video (recorded in studio during the Blackwater sessions), "hands on" interactive mixer, virtual reality studio tour and bonus audio tracks on CDROM... it's got soul, and it's superbad!

JJ Grey and Mofro bring me right back to the south. This is music that everyone needs to hear and move to. Amazing words and rhythm GET IT!!Country GhettoLochloosa

4 out of 5 stars great but Lochloosa is better.......2006-08-17

This is funkier as opposed to their other cd which rocks harder.Mofro makes great music and is even better live. They take these 3 minute ditties and extend them into 10 minute killer jams!

Blackwater is a throaty, hammond organ Allman brother type slow tune. Ho-Cakes is a funked out jam ode to the joys of southern cooking. Air, Free and FLorida are laid back grooves. Jookhouse a Meters type of jam that works great in concert.

As a southerner, I love this band. Topical lyrics, funky danceable grooves and good musicianship define this band.

The only reason that I did not give this cd 5 stars is b/c Lachaloosa is better. Otherwise, I give it a thumbs up real high.

Catch this band live if you can, they are excellent and will make you appreciate the recorded works ever more

One wonders what Daredevil the superhero might make of Daredevil: The Album. Given his heightened sense of hearing, the costumed one would probably grab the volume control, since tinnitus-inducing modern rock is the primary fare here. Despite strong new fare from Fuel, Saliva, and Nickelback, the pairing of Drowning Pool with another cartoon character, Rob Zombie, is the clear winner on personality alone. Two cuts from newcomers Evanescence, including the song showcased in the film's trailer ("Bring Me to Life"), also stand out thanks to the dramatic vocals of Amy Lee, who should find favor with Tori Amos fans. Respites from the hard rock action round out the disc: a collaboration between Nappy Roots and P.O.D. guitarist Marcus Curiel is a rap-rock outing that actually satisfies on both levels, Autopilot Off chime in with some peppy emo, and the title theme gets a Chemical Brothers-style big beat overhaul. --Kurt B. Reighley

4 out of 5 stars Evanescence and Chevelle...my two favorite bands ^_^.......2007-07-04

Not to say that the others aren't great; they are. This isn't Chevelle's best song, though. It was written for this soundtrack. I suggest getting one of their CDs to actually get to know them. As for Evanescence, what can I say? This is when they were great. (Unfortunately, they're not so great now.) Drowning Pool and Rob Zombie is a great pair, not as good as when Dave was singing for DP (RIP, man) but still makes for a decent song. And of course, you have a bunch of other sick bands, too.

Overall, it's an album worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, plus Evanesence!.......2007-05-11

What can I say. I love the soundtrack! The movie, not so much. But, the CD has some great tracks and Evanesence ROCKS!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Soundtrack Out There.......2006-08-19

The Daredevil Soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks that is out there. I'm going to agree mostly with the person who rated the songs but I have a little bit more diverse taste in music so I won't go hard on it for having Moby and Nappy Roots in it especially since that the track has Marcus Curiel Of P.O.D. The music is great and the only thing is I wish there was more music in it.

1. Fuel-Won't Back Down the title states how good the song is 10/10

2. The Calling- For You perfectly written and sung and the music video is awesome too. 10/10

3. Saliva-Bleed For Me Another great song by Saliva it may bee a little repetitive but it's a great song. 10/10

4. Seether-Hang On I like the song it's not that bad it has a good beat and gets a little slow but I do enjoy Seether 9/10

5. Nickelback-Learn The Hard Way It took me a while to start to like the song because well it wasn't what I was used too for Nickeback it's harder then most of their songs but it's definitely good. 8/10

6. Drowning Pool Featuring Rob Zombie-Man Without Fear Great song, great lyrics, great beat....
10/10

7. Nappy Roots Featuring Marcus Curiel I love this song it's so true the lyrics in it speak volumes although doesn't really apply to the movie since it's mostly rock songs in it but it's a really good song.
10/10

8. Moby-Evening Rain I can definitely understand putting this song in the soundtrack and it's beautifully sung and I'm not even a fan of Moby but the reason is that it needed to be there if you've seen the movie you know why so I give it a 8.5/10

9. Evanescence-Bring Me To Life everyone knows this song it's been on the radio before and it got a little old on the radio but it still is a good song. 8/10

10. Chevelle-Until You're Reformed The second best song on the album it got me started on Chevelle they are a great band the guitar solo in it is awesome. 10/10

11. Hoobastank-Right Before Your Eyes all I can say about this song is that it's great and is a very good song. 10/10

12. Palo Alto-Good song also got there cd after hearing the album which if you like the softer rock is a great band for you.
10/10

13. Revis-Caught In The Rain also another band I got the cd from although they have broken up after one album it is a very good band.10/10

14. Boysetsfire-Highwire Escape Artist good song good lyrics not the strongest on the cd but is still pretty good. 7.5/10

15. Autopilot Off-Raise Your Rifles haven't really listened to the song much it's one I normally skip but since I'm writing a review on the cd I figured I'd listen to it at this time I can only for the opinion of that it's an alright song but shouldnt' really be there. 5/10

16. Daredevil the blind justice remix theme from Daredevil. It's techno so it has a good beat isn't the best but for what it is 6/10

17. Evanescence-My Immortal great song great lyrics beautfiul voice 10/10

18. Finger Eleven-good song doesn't disappoint 8/10

19. Endo-Simple Lies such a good band that I bought two of their cds 10/10

20. 12 Stones-Let Go Another great band bought a cd of theirs as well check them out too.
9/10

5 out of 5 stars To this day, one of the best CDs I ever have ever bought.......2006-04-12

When I first got this album, I got it for just the first track, "Won't Back Down from Fuel". I won't lie, I wasn't all that into rock when I got this CD, I just got it for that one song. A year later I got into rock more, then listened to this CD again, and immediately fell in love with it. It has so many good tracks on it you would be surprised it was a soundtrack ("Bring Me To Life", "Fade In/Out" "The Mean Without Fear", "Hold On" are just a few). I'm a fan of Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Slipknot, and Disturbed, and this is still one of the best CDs i own today. I highly reccomend it if you're into Hard Rock/Alternative.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the investment.......2006-02-25

This has some great songs. I loved the movie and can close my eyes and see the scenes because the music was like a character in the film.

Yanni tacitly announced he was becoming a kinder, gentler, more thoughtful musician with the release of this 1992 studio recording. The triumphant surges and tympani-powered sonic eruptions that often distinguished his earlier works are replaced here by greater emphasis on billowy clouds of stardust. Yet even on its own subdued terms, Dare to Dream is largely an attractive package designed for Yanni's legions of newer fans who discovered him on Oprah or PBS. If you remember to program your CD-player to skip "Aria," a shrill, operatic oddity, you'll discover the album's strengths lie in its more energetic compositions--particularly "Desire" and "You Only Live Once." On the quiet side, the affecting "To the One Who Knows" is a soul-searching gem that bears repeated listening. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars If you do not like this CD, you must be deaf!!!!!.......2006-10-02

Yanni at his best! This is definitely one of the turning points in the evolution of New Age music! You Only Live Once is amazing, albeit really long, and To The One Who Knows is an exquisite piece. I prefer the version of Felitsa that appears on In My Time to the one on here, but it is still a pretty piece! Desire is phenomenal, using synth pan flutes and dulcimer to create a very Eastern sound. Aria, let's face it, is just plain weird, but it is followed by A Night To Remember, which is equally wonderful to the rest of the album, although just a bit cliché towards the end. In The Mirror isn't the best piece to listen to, but it is really fun to play on the piano! This one's a must-have as well!

5 out of 5 stars No doubt its a 5 of 5.......2006-01-09

Another amazing album from an amazing contemporary composer. All tracks are simply soothing and mind blowing. If you have a highly refined musical taste then you will appreciate this album. He won a Grammy for this album. Must own CD. Also check out Yanni's DVDs.

A handful of contemporary movies have whimsically looked back at the '80s. Various bands have borrowed from the time period's musical trends with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. But Weird Al was busy sending up that decade while it was still happening. On Dare to Be Stupid, Yankovic parodies, among other things, smash hits by two reigning divas of yore. "Like A Surgeon" turns Madonna's song into an inexperienced doctor's first-person account of his, uh, practice. Weird Al's version of a certain Cyndi Lauper hit proclaims, "Girls Just Want to Have Lunch." In this loony world, the object of desire in "I Want a New Drug" is transformed into a duck. On "Yoda," Yankovic targets the Kinks' early '70s hit, "Lola." Who else but Weird Al would turn a song about sexual identity and confusion into a tune about George Lucas's "wrinkled and green" creature? --Fred Cisterna

"Dare To Be Stupid" is classic "Weird" Al. It has pop favorites "Like A Surgeon" and "Girls Just Want To Have Lunch," but Al shows his genius with "Dare to be Stupid," "Yoda," and the tremendously creative "One More Minute." This is a CD that every "Weird" Al Yankovic fan should have.

Many people -including me - consider "Dare To Be Stupid" to be Weird Al's best work to date (as of 2007).

Like A Surgeon had me laughing hard.

Dare To Be Stupid is very peculiar.

Yoda is good and catchy.

One More Minute is a good slow song.

This Is The Life is a 50's song.

4 out of 5 stars More of "Weird Al"'s parodies and spoofs.......2006-09-07

"Weird Al" Yankovic is still fulfilling his contract with Scotti Brothers, the CBS-owned company that controls his independent Rock And Roll Records label. This 1985 release,I found far better than Al's previous two albums. Being a longtime Madonna fan,I love LIKE A SURGEON which tells about an erroneous surgeon who's "a disgrace to the AMA(American Medical Association),cause my patients die before they can pay." Madonna has a cameo in the video. She's sitting in a hospital filing her fingernails. The title track,a Yankovic original,is a spoof of Devo.
Those who love Huey Lewis & The News' I WANT A NEW DRUG will also love I WANT A NEW DUCK. ONE MORE MINUTE is another Yankovic original done in the style of Sha-Na-Na. Oldies-but-goodies fans will sure love that one. YODA is a tribute to the Star Wars character with Ray Davies' music to his band The Kinks' recording LOLA. GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE is just a cover of the theme from the classic cartoon show. Other Yankovic originals include SLIME CREATURES FROM OUTER SPACE,THIS IS THE LIFE(the theme from the 1984 Michael Keaton film JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY), and CABLE TV. Another one of Al's food parodies is GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE LUNCH with music from Cyndi Lauper's hit recording GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN. HOOKED ON POLKAS is a sequel to IN 3-D's POLKAS ON 45 featuring a medley of covers of non-satirical hit songs. HOP contains WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?,STATE OF SHOCK,FOOTLOOSE,METAL HEALTH,OWNER OF A LONELY HEART and others.

"Slime Crechers from Outer Space" is my faverit and "Girls Just Want to have Lunch" is great, but "This is the Life" well bad. If you don't crack up to this al-bum you are very stupid

Few rock bands in the 2000s are more evocative of a specific geography than Florida's Mofro. You can almost smell the backwoods swamps of the Sunshine State when you're listening to their dusky blend of Southern rock, blues, and soul. The first thing that grabs you about Mofro's sophomore CD is the deep, soulful grooves that permeate every song, whether on up-tempo funky workouts or lowdown gritty laments. Repeated listens reveal a range of subject matter that moves from domestic abuse to rural overdevelopment to the lost innocence (and cuisine) of youth. As a songwriter JJ Grey presents a well-rounded picture of Southern life, with room for both pride and, in some cases, shame, and his expressive, grits-and-gravy voice is the perfect vehicle to deliver it. Lochloosa is an unpretentious, moving, and inviting album that settles into a humid groove from the onset and never leaves it behind. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

Florida's Mofro returns with the successor to their critically acclaimed debut, "Blackwater". Their "front porch soul" sound is again represented here, with grooves and anthems that delve deep into the backwoods psyche of songwriter JJ Grey. The music weaves in and out of this piney woods world of undulating joy and sorrow with a rare warmth and sincerity. "Lochloosa", a place in Florida unknown by most Floridians, sings of places you may never visit and people you may never know, but JJ's voice delivers it like a postcard from your best friend.

I heard the band in PBS show called Suwanee River Festival and I just like the way they sound. I tried to get the Lochloosa CD but Amazon has it for $159. That's a little bit much for a CD. Anyone knows where I can get it for less than that? Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Florida's new state anthem.......2007-02-24

I had to write a review here, just to put my own 2 cents in. So far, the other reviews I've read are nearly right on, so I'll try not to reiterate too much here.

The CD itself is much more cohesive than their first release, "Blackwater." Where BW attempted to find itself, "Lochloosa" stays put in it's own genre, theme and feel, and it's excellent from start to finish. It touches on influences ranging from southern rock to gospel, soul and blues.

Not mentioned in any of the reviews I read is how truly incredible the song "Ten Thousand Islands" is. In fact, I believe this is JJ's best song--musically and lyrically. The song is about a well-dressed murderer who lived in Florida in the late 19th century. He went from town to town killing people for pleasure. The legend around him grew even before he died. The lyrics only make the song better, but the music itself could carry the tune, and I can only imagine how good Mofro must do this one live, extending it out 10 minutes or so?

Other tunes are excellent as well on this CD: the soulful "Lochloosa," the early 70's ZZ Top-esque "Dirtfloorcracker," "Six Ways From Sunday" and "Y'all Ready" are all catchy songs with great lyrics.

Apart from the music, you'd be hard pressed to find another group that can tell you more about Florida's history than Mofro. I would recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of Early American Music, but especially to those who live in the deep south. This CD is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Homesick, but it's alright.......2007-01-06

Mofro is one of the most entertaining bands in the nation. The soul, energy, and thought-provocking lyrics that come from J.J. Grey and company are simply like nothing I've ever heard. Do yourself a favor and go to their website, find a date at a venue near you, and go.

Lochloosa is Mofro's follow-up CD to Blackwater. It features a diverse array of material - no song sounds anything like another. I particularly like "Everybodys", "Pray for Rain" - hidden track,"dirt floor cracka", and of course "Lochloosa".

What can I compare the sound to? Nothing. This is swamp funk. It's got soul, it's got funk, and it's fried up in batter to taste good.

5 out of 5 stars Better then their first.......2007-01-05

Mofro rocks and this CD is even better then the first one. Highly recommend this CD to anyone that really enjoys good music.

4 out of 5 stars THE DARKSIDE DARE IS TURNING AGAINST THE EVIL IDENTIFICATION WITH THE (BAD) MOTHER-EARTH........2007-06-25

This record was released in 1994 and it's a classical old skool album.
It is a psychic metaphor of the evil identification with a bad mother.
Please look at the art cover picture: there is Redman below ground, and he yelles; above him, there are the electric cables at high tension, that symbolizes the psychic cathexis that are investited in this psychic process.
Naturally this record is for winning people that, according to the Psyco-analysis of Sigmund Freud, expel the "bad" objects and integrate the aggressivity energy.
HIGLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL RAP FANS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Redman Album (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5.0 stars).......2007-04-08

This is my favorite Redman LP compared to all the albums that he has released (with the exception of "Red Gone Wild" which I haven't heard yet because it came out recently). Given that "What Thee Album?" back in 1992 was his best LP, Redman consistantly switches up his style. Truthfully from all of the albums that I heard by him, he's never had a bad album. But on his sophomore album "Dare Iz A Darkside", I find it to be an awesome follow up album.

One thing people loved about Redman, was that he was always saying something funny in his rhymes, and it keeps peoples attention. And his sense of humor really play in his skills. Songs like "A Million And One Buddah Spots" and "Green Island" really show his sense of humor behind the mic. I would say that my most favorite song on this album would be "Can't Wait", because it has so much energy (and it's one of my favorite music videos as well). And the traditional "Soopaman Luva II" is a good song that has a twist in it's storyline.

Guest appearances are good as well. Erick Sermon and Keith Murray drop dope verses on "Cosmic Slop", another excellent track. And Hurricane G. appears in "We Run N.Y." that is okay as well. Her voice is sampled for the chorus of the song "Winicumuhround".

The production on this album is excellent as well. Erick Sermon and Redman really drop some nice beats for this album. The production really gives off a 1994 type flavor to this album.

This is another gem from the N.J. area. Around this time, a lot of artists from that area were starting or were already making a name for themselves (Artifacts, The Fugees, Lords Of The Underground), and Redman's second album would make a perfect addition to represent. This album really deserves a 9 on the 10 scale, but I said it as my favorite album from Redman, so I figured I would warrant a perfect score for this album. If you're a fan of East Coast rap from the 90's, I recommend that you listen to this album.

4 out of 5 stars Redman - Dare Iz A Darkside.......2007-03-25

Two years later in 1994, Redman releases his second album called "Dare Iz A Darkside". His first album was a success and I was definately feeling the production and lyrics and definately the originality on that album. This album is different in some aspects. Ill break it down a bit.

The lyrics on this album, you still got that same style from Redman. If you were feelin the lyrics from "Whut? Thee Album" youll be getting the same type of lyrics here on this album. Redman is definately still kickin the dope ish!

The production on this album was nice! Unlike the first album, this album is really grimey. Gots them heavy bass, just straight bangers. I seen a review, saying that all these beats sound the same, well I agree but disagree at the same time. On this album, you got a majority of the production by Erick Sermon, and some joints produced by Redman himself. Im feelin the productio on this album, just for the fact that the beats are grimey and hard bangers.

Overall, I recommend you pick up Redmans first album, then this one next. They have different styles, but at the same time both ill. Pick this up! Real hip-hop, Redman keeps it hardcore!!! Overall I give this album about a 4.5/5.

Still some real good songs, and some great lyrics. Buy Muddy Waters first.

4 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM IS ESSENTIAL AS WELL, BUT IT DID NOT MOVE ME LIKE THE FIRST ONE.......2007-02-15

i dig the joints on this album as well, but something about this album just does not move me in the same way that the first one did. however, i love GREEN ISLAND, WE RUN NEW YORK (where is hurricane g?), and CAN'T WAIT. oh, and the skits are banannas!!!! i'd get this again, but i think that it would make me just wanna listen to the first album anyway.

5 out of 5 stars "The edge of Seventeen".......2007-05-12

I was just about to turn seventeen when this lp came out of nowhere and blew the cookie cutter mold of music formats out of the ballpark. This album arrived at the dawn of the new wave, original MTV period that spawned a whole slew of bands that have become the nucleus of the '80's" retro movement STILL currently popular. What a joy to have songs of my favorite summer remastered and digitized. And as an added bonus, to have one of the first remixed albums, "Love and Dancing", included on the same disc. This is a fantastic reintroduction to the Human League and their landmark album. There is so much more great music here beyond "Don't you want me" included here in it's full length original club mix. Many of the remixes that are included are ONLY available on this disc and not on the other million or so 80's compilations. Fall in love all over again, buy now and relive the magic.

Who says time travel hasn't been invented?

Pop this CD in your player, fix yourself a gin and tonic (or a Midori Sour), lie back in your recliner, and LISTEN!

Within seconds of the start of "Don't You Want Me?" you'll be immediately transported back to that dance floor in 1981, your hair fully spiked and highlighted, wearing your parachute pants, capezios, a short short skirt, a wife beater and an open deco shirt singing to your dance partner, "You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you...."

According to Billboard Magazine:

"Dare! captures a moment in time perfectly -- the moment post-punk's robotic fascination with synthesizers met a clinical Bowiesque infatuation with fashion and modern art, including pop culture, plus a healthy love of songcraft."

For those of us in the U.S. for whom the sounds of the era (the late 1970's) no longer held the fascination they once had. Also, disco seemed to have become repetitive, in large part. Then.....then...out of England began to come a noise....a sound...not disco, not rock, not punk, but something much more different!

Long before there was a name for it (New Wave, as it would be called), there was The Human League.

The slick, smoothe sounds that groups such as The Human League were putting out struck just the right chord. The Human League really got started in 1977, but we, on this side of the pond, didn't know it. It wasn't really until 1981's Dare! that the U.S. got a good dose of what the latest British invasion had in store for us. Certainly, The Human League took a strong nod from Kraftwerk, but whereas that group's sound was far more "synthesized," The Human League did as their name tells us and added a much more human factor to the element. It softened out the technology and allowed the vocals to be front and center supported fully by dynamic synthesized sounds.

Is this all too much lavish praise to heap on The Human League? Not really. While there were many groups in England at about the same time creating a similar sound, it was The Human League that really were the first out the gate with the most fully realized, fully formed elaborate orchestrations of synthesizers and slick vocals.

Dare! is not their first album but it is quite possibly their most important album, because it cemented their amazing talent in the collective mind of the U.S. with the tremendously popular and danceable "Don't You Want Me?"

While each song on this album is a hit in its own right (if not charted as such), remember that it was widely received by the music industry as a benchmark album.

You will want this album so that you, too, can travel back to 1981 with no trouble at all!

Dare! is worth the trip.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2007-02-23

Great music performed by one of the best orchestras in the world. What more can you ask for?Ron Goodwin is a genius. The music that he wrote is incredible. His best pieces are featured here on this cd. From the great marches like " Force ten from Navarone" to great romantic sounding pieces like "Deadly Stranger" and the love theme from 633 Sqadron. I also really like the selections from "Monte Carlo or Bust"(almost seven minutes long) and the selections from "Those magnificent men in Their flying machines" (six minutes long). Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic do a great job performing all the pieces, and add another great cd to the Chandos movie series. This is a must have for fans of Ron Goddwin or great film music in general. It well deserves the 5 stars and maybe even more.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!.......2007-01-10

Ron Goodwin is a fine composer. I particularly enjoyed listening to the music from the early 1960's Miss Marple films, starring Margaret Rutherford. But, to let one know; the Marple music is different from most of the Goodwin scores on this CD. His music is mostly of the rousing march or military variety.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2006-10-31

Goodwin's music is outstanding. His World War II scores are outstanding. They have drive and purpose. They sound good too.

4 out of 5 stars those magnificent men in their flying machines.......2005-08-05

This CD provides a range of music mainly from films and concerned with epic war dramas all from the pen of the well known Ron Goodwin. Films such as 633squadron, submarine - X, operation strongbow, force ten from navarone, where eagles dare are just some which are represented. I was particularly looking for the title'Those magnificant men in their flying machines' to add to a slide show of vintage planes in flight and on exhibition. This fitted the bill just fine.

5 out of 5 stars After HOW DARE YOU -------- 5 cc.......2007-01-06

Kevin Godley & Lol Creme got together in 1969. Calling themselves Frabjou, the duo issued the single, "I'm Beside Myself." At EMI/CAPITOL in 1972, and under the name Hotlips, they went to #5 in Britain and made the American Top 40 with the afro-beat based "Neanderthal Man," a song long on hypnoticism but short on lyrics. Godley & Creme, along with Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart and a new name-- 10cc, next signed with UK records. 10cc's first song for this label, "Donna," reached #2 in Britain. "Rubber Bullets," their next single, went all the way to #1. An album was released. None of these efforts charted in America.

Going over to PHONOGRAM/MERCURY records, the group hit their stride in 1975 with "I'm Not In Love." This beautifully melancholy song was augmented by an ethereal electronically-enhanced semi-choir. After "THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK" album came HOW DARE YOU, which had two songs ("Art For Art's Sake," and "I'm Mandy, Fly Me") that charted well in Britain. Unfortunately, this was the last collaboration by these four musicians. Differences of opinion sent Godley & Creme their own way, while Stewart and Gouldman carried on as 10cc.

When I first heard this album in the spring of '76, I was convinced it was the second coming of the Beatles. Thirty years of hindsight proves that to be a slight overestimation. Regardless, it's all still very good, and holds up well with the passage of time. Personal favorites are: "Head Room," "I Wanna Rule The World," and "Iceberg." "Don't Hang Up," the album's final track, cuts off abruptly with a CLICK and a dial tone. This seems like a perfect ending, and probably says something about how these four guys finished up.

5 out of 5 stars 10cc.......2006-03-23

One of my all time favorites and it's great to have it back in my collection. Thanks for your promptness.

5 out of 5 stars You Dare Not!.......2005-07-27

As often as I enjoyed 10cc in the 70s, and regardless how many of their albums I purchased on vinyl, they appear to have been somewhat overlooked in the frenzy of group reunions and even to some extent on classic rock stations. I still hear "The Things We Do for Love" from "Deceptive Bends" and "I'm Not in Love" from "The Original Soundtrack," but nothing otherwise; more the pity, because 10cc was innovative and creative. Even in the creative and musically explosive 70s they were one of the most interesting and unusual groups.

The title track starts off with a Samba flavor that introduces additional elements one at a time, keeping the Samba beat in the background until suddenly the lead guitar changes the musical flavor to a harder edge. My only complaint is that this instrumental could have been much longer.

The next song is "Lazy Ways," which combines Eric Stewart's vocal talents the phenomenal instrumental talents of 10cc. Particularly interesting are the Moog synthesizer and clavinet played by Lol Creme. Lol uses the Moog like an organ, which generates a unique sound for this song. The lyrics match the song, and the result is a perfect example of a nicely crafted rock song.

While the next song has its silly moments, musically it is fun and interesting. Furthermore, "I Wanna Rule the World" also has incredible lyrics. How many songs contain lines such as:

A brave new world will rise from the ashes
And there upon a rock titanic, I'll cast a giant
Shadow on the face of the deep
And never again will they dare to call me
A freckled, spotty, specky, four-eyed
Weedy little creep

Next is one of the gems on this CD. "I'm Mandy Fly Me" has a humorous title based on a series of television commercials from a bygone era. However, the music is serious and wonderful, with a combination of vocals and instrumentals that require you listen to the song with your full attention to appreciate it. My mere words are incapable of explaining how wonderful this song is. In addition to Eric Stewart's vocals, this song also features a long bridge that musically describes the crash of a plane. The pace of the song has several changes throughout that will keep you focused on this song from beginning to end.

Lyrically 10cc is creative and almost surreal. The members of the group often juxtapose elements that appear to be unrelated. The lyrics of "Iceberg" fall into this category. Though lyrics can be interpreted in many ways, I think these lyrics deal with a woman, and how her significant other perceives her. All the lyrical elements are pieces of how the singer thinks about his relationship with her; of course their relationship is rocky and his thoughts are in turmoil. The music is similar tumultuous and mixed, with the end result being an unusual and uniquely 10cc song.

The next song is incredible, and should be one of the all time best rock songs. "Art for Art's Sake" seems simple, but of course it is not. The elements range from progressive to rock, with smatters of other genres thrown in for seasoning. The bass parts of this song are outstanding with good speakers. The ethereal portions contrast well with the heavy rock beat. More than a dozen instruments were used on this song, which helps explain why I think it is complex, and also explains why this song is difficult to describe.

Consistent with 10cc's eclectic nature is "Rock `n' Roll Lullaby." The lyrics are typically interesting, but the slow, mellow music is the interest in this song. This song also features a glockenspiel, which is a very unusual instrument for a nominally rock song. The lead guitar in this song has places where it sets itself well away from the other instruments. The bass is also heavily featured in a few places. A Dobro, more properly called a resonator guitar, can also be readily heard in places. Often these guitars are played with a slide, and so they are sometimes called slide guitars, but Graham Gouldman seems to be plucking the strings, creating the unique sound on this song.

The double entendre and pun-filled song "Head Room" follows. The music is pretty average, though the lyrics have moments of interest. There are times when I enjoy this song, and other times when I find it slightly annoying. The song has a slight blues flavor from time to time that makes it different from the other songs on this CD.

The final song is one of the most brilliant songs in music. "Don't Hang Up" is a song that begins sadly, as the singer laments the separation between him and his wife. The song then flashes back to the earlier days, the romance, the marriage and the honeymoon. The song also indicates that others thought their marriage was doomed from the beginning. It is when the song explains that he is immature, leading into his heartbreak and love for her that the emotions can become powerful for an empathetic listener. The ending of this song is fantastically heartfelt and emotional, and makes this song a must have for those who fancy themselves experts on excellent rock.

This CD includes a bonus song, "Get It While You Can," but I think the bonus song detracts from the power of "Don't Hang Up."

This combination of members of 10cc brought to life too few albums, each with their own charm and experimentation. Unfortunately, this kind of eclectic arty rock found few fans, and 10cc is now remembered by few people, and by nearly none in the most recent generation. However, the CDs are there if you want to listen to something different, and fun, and powerful, with little intent for commercial success, though for a time they were. I also recommend earlier albums "The Original Soundtrack" and "Sheet Music" by 10cc.

5 out of 5 stars A Sleeper.......2005-03-17

At first, I didn't think this album had much to offer. I'm Mandy, and Art For Art's Sake were all I loved. Later when going to visit my parents on a four and a half hour drive, I listened to this and Original Soundtrack (AMAZING ALBUM) over and over, and the variable charms of the songs make themselves apparent, and the album is not only one of 10cc's most serious, layered, and mature albums, it's also one of their best, and a great way for Godley and Creme to exit.

The title track instrumental kind of gets things off to a strange start. It's not really all that interesting in some ways: it has a lot of strange instrumentation and ideas, but I don't think it is very cohesive. However, using the melody from the next track, in a piano arrangment, was a great idea.

Because Lazy Days is a wonderful track! It really lacks the strange, sometimes jarring, genre cuts of earlier material: the instrumentation is mostly pretty normal, and the lyrics are good, but not haha funny. But it's absolutely a beauty of a song, especially the "never get up if you don't get up, always be down if you sit around" section. No comedy, no goofiness, no overt experimentation: just crafting an immaculate song.

I Wanna Rule The World follows and it was another that just passed me by at first. It is a very odd collection of riffs, musical ideas, and strange chanting, ranting, and childlike blathering. The ideas musically are STILL brilliant, even if it has no cohesion really, and the singing is funny enough to give it a thumbs up.

I'm Mandy is brilliant, but obviously not what Godley and Creme were interested in. THe melody, the arrangements, the lyrics, the singing, even sampling one of their old songs: all of this helps create one of their most amazing songs, though words barely do it justice.

Next is Iceberg, which is more typical of their older material. An all over the map collage of ideas, barely held together sometimes (could be on Sheet Music!) with strange lyrics that seem not to relate to anything. It is a strong track, pretty in parts, strange in others.

Art For Art's Sake has one of those "so simple and perfect why wasn't it written before" riffs, and lyrics that are BIT transparent, but it also has that beautiful ambient section at the beginning and the middle. Genius in a way I can't describe.

Rock'N Roll Lullaby is a bit of a drag, I'll admit. It's okay, but I don't really understand the point of the song. It doesn't really do anything lyrically or musically, even if it is solid. Oops!

Head Room is a strange blues like excursion with a slightly dumb play on words "just give me some head.........room" blah... it's okay, but another of the weakest tracks.

Don't Hang Up is one of the most heart breaking, brilliant songs the band, or any band, ever recorded. Hard to explain, it has to be experienced.

All in all, a great album hampered by a few tracks that while good just aren't that WOW as the rest. Definitely a buy! Especially if you can get the version i have which has Original Soundtrack on the same cd!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lou Barlow returns with another amazing album - you'll probably love it!.......2006-01-10

Folk Implosion is made up of ex-Sebadoh singer/songwriter Lou Barlow and his partner John Davis. This obviously created a lot of hype. Thankfully, even with the album being arguably uneven (though that more has to do with the fact that it has 3 GREAT songs and the others are simply "good"), Folk Implosion managed to write some GREAT songs (these would be "Pole Position", "Insinuation" and "Checking In"). These songs are simply some of the best indie rock tunes that I have the pleasure of owning. These songs essentially make the album a classic as the rest are merely "good". It also seems pretty original for some reason, even though it sounds like it was influenced by many other bands. Lou Barlow is still a very good singer, and although he doesn't necessarily go for any high notes you won't care about that at all. The lyrics are surprisingly good here, and oftentimes they're pretty memorable (and catchy). The musicianship is also extremely good (and clear) here - it sounds like lo-fi indie rock. Basically, there's a lot one will like about this album. Lou Barlow and indie rock fans will love this album, and I think other people probably will too! Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not the best.......2005-08-29

Like I thought of the "Take a look inside" CD.....these are really just the reference material which the later CDs have grown from. The better CD to buy is "One Part Lullaby" or even the "KIDS" soundtrack....where the beats and melodies are more compicated and interwoven....more mature sound.

5 out of 5 stars I must not be too bright.......2002-11-30

Either that, or I can't tell what's cool anymore.Even at 30, I still think this is an unpolished alternative gem. Warm,lo-fi minimalist pluckings showcase introspective love bummer lyrics that chronicle the darker side of affection. Sure, it isn't radio friendly, but is that the measure of goodness? You'll get high mileage out of this CD-hard to tire of. Shoegazers take note, this is your record.

4 out of 5 stars pleasent enough.......2002-08-29

This is nice indie rock for teenagers as it gets. I mean, its not the Beatles, but it has its place and it does have some really good songs like Burning Paper (the best on the Cd in my opinion), Insinuation, and Checking In.

Something about playing this album in Oct or Nov when it starts to get really chilly outside and you've just broken up with someone. That's how I first heard it. Not to say it cheered me up at all, but I listen to it now and I am instantly transported to walking home one late afternoon in November as the sun was starting to weaken out, and I had on a sweater, but I was still cold and I had just broken up with my girlfriend. And of course, I am listening to this thing in my walkman. So now, forever until the end of time, that is what I think of listening to this album. Arghhhh!!

I don't have any of their other albums, except for that early one that says on the back: 20 songs in 14 minutes, or something like that. That one sounds like my ex-girlfriend's brother's band in the garage when they didn't have a bass player and they only knew three songs and the drummer couldn't keep in time!!

Oh, gee, I've just put on the CD, and here it comes, the opening bars of Pole Position and there I am walking on that sidewalk with all those kids riding bikes and laughing, and there I was dwelling on a broken heart and this was my soundtrack.

I hope you have better listening experiences than I did. Don't listen to ANY cd if you just broke up with your girlfriend. That CD will never make you think of anyone else but her.

5 out of 5 stars Better than One Part Lullaby.......2002-06-14

Yes, definitely One Part Lullaby made use of more instruments, but that doesn't mean that it has a better sound. If you were already a fan of the Folk Implosion, you would get bored of One Part Lullaby easily; it sounds as if trying to go mainstream. I highly recommend Dare to be Surprised because it has more of an original and lo-fi sound. Great album.
