My Bloody Valentine's entire career has been aiming toward the perfect guitar noise that Kevin Shields has in his head: a pure, warm, androgynous but deeply sexual rush of sound. Loveless is overwhelming, with Shields and Bilinda Butcher's guitars and voices blending into each other until they become a distant orchestra, the rhythm section striding in majestic lockstep, and occasional bursts of dance rhythms (as on the single "Soon") buoying the live instruments' warp and drift. Furiously loud but seductive rather than aggressive, the album flows like a lava stream from one track into another, subsuming everything in the mix into its blissful roar, and pulsing like a lover's body. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-18

I've been searching for something unique and refreshing to listen to for quite some time and stumbled upon this album while fumbling about in someone's list of favorites. I haven't stopped listening to it since I recieved from Amazon about a week ago. My Bloody Valentine weave a kind of rigid beauty like what I would envision as the sound of an uncut gemstone. This albums laced with angelic melodies atop bending, twirling guitar breaths. It's amazing. I give it five stars and don't see myself getting over this for quite sometime. Thankyou.

3 out of 5 stars masterpiece? really?.......2007-07-14

I must admit I am surprised with this album. I have had it for about a week now. I tried it out because I had been trying to get into new music and I have heard it said that this piece was an inspiration for Smashing Pumpkins. Even that SP ripped it off. Having listened to it I am surprised. I am surprised how much supposed money, though, and effort went into it. I don't doubt that it was groundbreaking and influential, it is just that, for all that went into it and the high regard people have for it, a good deal of the tracks sound like me and my friends goofing around with power chords in my basement with the volume too high. I do like most of it. some of the songs are a tad too long for all the repetitive riffs and simple structure of the songs. Some of them seem to drone on and on when they would sound fine being 3 or 4 minutes instead of 6. I can see the comparisons to SP because one or two of the tracks sound like Siamese Dream B-sides.

Having that off my chest, I still recommend this album. Especially for fans of The Smashing Pumpkins early work (Gish, Siamese Dream) or If you have heard and like Hum.

4 out of 5 stars Through the wall.......2007-07-14

I haven't listened to this cd in probably 10 years. Finding it in buried in my collection, I ripped the tracks and I must say...it is like hearing it for the first time. What's amazing is how utterly timeless it feels. I've listened to it multiple times since, mesmerized at its complexity, the spectral quality of the vocal integration (truly, it sounds like an instrumental album where ghosts have been found to appear). This classic album would be served well with a remastered edition.

5 out of 5 stars Just extraordinary in every sense of the word........2007-07-05

Still the greatest shoegazer album ever made (and arguably the first), "Loveless" is one of those rare albums that must be listened to dozens of times in order to be thoroughly appreciated, and once that happens, one can listen to "Loveless" countless times without growing tired of it. My Bloody Valentine's previous album, "Isn't Anything," perhaps hinted at brilliance, but it's not in the same league as "Loveless" which remains one of my top ten favorite rock albums.

With the swirling feedback sonic-drenched guitars, and the minimilist haunting vocals (Bilinda Butcher and Kevin Shields), "Loveless" sounds like nothing else before or since. No fewer than six songs completely blow me away: "Only Shallow," "Loomer," "When You Sleep," "Come in Alone," "Sometimes" (sung so beautifully by Kevin), and then, after somewhat of a lull, the incredibly gorgeous finale "Soon." For me, so many emotions emerge during what feels more like a profound journey than a mere listening experience.

My question is how could Kevin Shields and his bandmates put out something so unique and wonderful and then never release another album again? I don't know if they would have ever reached these heights again, but they certainly could have tried. Fortunately MBV inspired many other bands, some who carried on the shoegazer mantle quite well. Right now, for instance, I've been listening alot to Voyager One and Bethany Curve, both who owe MBV big-time.

I think I would stand on line all night in the rain to see a reunited MBV perform "Loveless" live. I'm not sure I could say that about any other band and album.

P.S. - Above, I mentioned that this album was one of my top ten favorite rock albums. Here they are (in no particular order):

Loveless
Stone Roses - self titled album
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Disintegration - The Cure
Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis
Born to Run - Springsteen
Who's Next - The Who
Beggar's Banquet - The Rolling Stones
To Our Children's Children's Children - The Moody Blues
Joshua Tree - U2

To my fellow shoegazer fans, may I recommend:

Ferment - Catherine Wheel
Nowhere - Ride
Monster Zero - Voyager One
Gold - Bethany Curve

5 out of 5 stars The best album ever?.......2007-04-29

Is this the best album ever made?

I'm not sure about that... but i am sure that its up there with the likes of The Stone Roses, Pet Sounds and White Album.

It is without doubt my fave record ever... even beating The Stone Roses debut album. Whats more i still have my Loveless tour t-shirt :-)

Why Kevin Shields and Belinda Butcher never released a follow-up is a complete mystery to me. It may still happen though...

Personal fave of mine on the album is Only Shallow.

If you like this album you will love "You made me realise"... a fantastic tune.

Album Description

The Poison' is an album rooted in classic British metal, with brutal riffs and colossal, pounding drums all lovingly and respectfully thrown into the mix along with the band's own blend of powerhouse aggression and youthful anarchy and energy. With `The Poison', Bullet for my Valentine are set to firmly establish themselves as the front runners of UK Metal, and give all the US bands a run for their money.

From the stunning opening introduction track, guest staring classical metal titans Apocalyptica, the million miles an hour heavy as hell `Her Voice Resides', the acoustic metal classic in the making `All these things I hate (revolve around me)', through to the top anthem `4 Words (To choke upon)', this is a debut album to savour in all its epic, metal glory. Working once again with uber producer Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Cradle of Filth), the album successfully manages to capture the blinding raw energy and power of a band with the world at its feet, a band about to explode!

In the last year, Bullet for my Valentine have toured with Atreyu, It Dies Today, Funeral For A Friend, and just finished their headlining "Kerrang Tour" with special guests Hawthorne Heights.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice metal album.......2007-07-25

After listening to this album I'll hook you guys up with a review. These guys really aren't the best metal musicians becuase of really simple guitar riffs. Even though they are simple they have a catchy tune and good song writing. Matt Tuck (lead singer) should sing most songs in their future beucause the other singer just gets annoying with his screams in the backround. I don't listen to most new metal bands but this band really has talent. I would rank them above any metal band that came out in the 2000's. This album really doesn't have a bad track except for "her voice resides". Hope you guys like my drunk review and give me a good rating. Buy or download this album!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2007-06-21

My God, Bullet for My Valentine is one of my favorite bands. Not because of its "popularity," but because of its rather...unique sound. I'm not sure if it would be called unique due to the guitar solo's and excessive screaming, though...ah, well.

This band's sound is more in-your-face, like most Metal-based bands, with excellent guitar riffs and solo's. Certainly, this CD will not bore you, unless you get over things quickly. Other than that, this is a somewhat memorable band.

Somewhat. It could have been more shocking, it could have made us think, "Wow." And I mean, WOW. Oh, well. That all drives us towards the impossible perfection, now doesn't it? Hm.

This is highly recommended! Very nice, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Metal Albums to come out of UK in a While .......2007-05-09

I first got this album after hearing there song Tears Don't Fall and I enjoyed it a lot. I like the fact that they mix good vocals with good screaming. I like screaming but I don't like too much of it and these guys give a good blend of both vocals and screaming. I a amazed that the lead singer can sing, scream and play guitar at the same time. This is a good album from a very talented band and I am impressed that everyone except the drummer gives significant vocal contribution. Recommended for anyone who enjoys Hardcore or Emocore. Highlights are Tears don't Fall, Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow, and All Theses Things I Hate (Revolve Around You).

2 out of 5 stars Screamo-metal for mallcore kids.......2007-04-30

The Poison was introduced to me by a friend of mine who thought I might like them. The first song was good but,the rest of the album left a sour taste in my mouth. If I had to describe this record I would say it sounds like Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold had a love child. The guitar is actually really good but, the singing is way too emo for my taste. It isn't very original either. You might even think that you have heard some of these songs on other metal records that recently came out."The Poison" does have it's moments. I liked "Spit You Out" and "4 Words" alot. Had there been more metal singing, less emo singing, and a little more originality it might have been worth buying. Instead they just leave you wondering if the same people who created N'Sync created these guys. 2 stars weak

5 out of 5 stars The metal I've been looking for.......2007-04-24

This is the metal I've been looking for. Speed and aggression WITH technical ability and good song-crafting. On top of that, the guy can actually sing (when he chooses to--he likes to do the Pantera/Hatebreed vocal-cord, shredding-screaming-thing, which I don't get personally). Cool riffs and some cool soloing (but not much).

For me, The Poison draws on those elements that were best in 80s speed-metal while still having a contemporary sound. I don't give out five stars lightly but this is the best new disc I've gotten in quite some time.

Highly recommended.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

5 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-07-15

This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I saw her play in person, and Live is much, much better then the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22

I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.

5 out of 5 stars relaxation.......2007-05-13

This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-07

Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.

5 out of 5 stars Talented violinist.......2007-03-29

When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Live Band, These guys Kill!!.......2007-07-05

I Am watching dvd Version of this Right Now, and Maroon 5 Are a Killer LIVE Band as well, as excellent Recording artist!! You will get 2 Discs with this package, 1 for Dvd Concert, and cd for Concert Songs. They Are both Awesome, is the only way to describe both!! And Just so you dont think im some teen age follower, im 32. They Appeal to anyone Regardless of Age in my Opinion! Of course most of these are the same songs from songs about jane album, but there all totally live, and the fact that you also get the Dvd is a no brainer! So if your fans and Dont have time to get to a concert, or just want the live version , Dont wait it is definetly worth the price!! Peace all.

2 out of 5 stars great band, badly mixed.......2006-10-15

The dvd is good. I love their music and they perform with plenty of energy and emotion. It's good to see them stretch out musically on some of their songs. My complaint is with the CD. The music is poorly mixed. It seems to be a straight transfer of the dvd soundtrack, which any one with xillisoft or similar software could have done for themselves, although possibly not, given what previous reviewers have alerted us to about the copy protection software. Anyway, my point is that the cd hasn't been remixed for dedicated audio listening. As a result the crowd noise is way too loud all the way through every song. It is like listening to the cd in a room full of crickets and mosquitos, on a windy night next to a freeway by the ocean. The poor quality of the mix extends to the balancing of the instrument levels. In some songs the lead guitar sits out clear and strong and in others it is swamped by the rest of the band, robbing songs of their climactic moments.
A disappointing effort from a greaty band.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, Great concert.......2006-03-27

This is one awesome band, incredible musicians, the down and dirty lyrics remind me of some of the great R&B stuff back in the day. And Adam Levine's voice, you ain't gonna get him confused with anyone else.

The CD has been in my car's player since I took it out of the package. Like someone else said, I can play it over and over and not get tired of the music.

I hope these guys are around a long time

1 out of 5 stars Content/ Copy-Protected CD - Rubbish.......2006-03-06

This spoilt it for me. I work away allot and couln't wait to download this on my ipod, which does actually copy, but the playback is messed up.
I bought this album and every other album I have on my Ipod and I should have the choice as to where I want to listen to it.
Secondly I hate the fact that it automtically installs software on my PC.
Don't buy it if you want to listen to it on you IPod.

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever!.......2007-04-24

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

5 out of 5 stars Kristen Chenowith.......2007-02-26

I bought this CD for the Girl in 14G. Yes, it's that good...

4 out of 5 stars Has its moments.......2007-02-19

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-19

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

5 out of 5 stars This woman has what it takes, and then some..........2007-01-12

Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!.......2007-07-22

When I first saw this item I was browsing around the internet just killing time. I already own the original release of The Poison, so I was a little hesitant to order this for 4 new tracks and a dvd. I wish I had bought it as soon as i noticed it. The extra tracks are amazing and the dvd is fantastic. BFMV is one of the best new bands I've heard in awhile. The music is melodic and heavy. If you do not own this cd do yourself a favor and buy it. TODAY!!!

Chet Baker was at the height of his popularity, the epitome of cool jazz, when these tracks were recorded for Pacific Jazz between 1952 and 1954. While Baker could hold his own in bop settings, the emphasis in this collection is squarely on his lyrical approach to ballads, whether singing or playing trumpet, with just a rhythm section or an added string orchestra. His vocals were absolutely distinctive, sung in a high-pitched, even fragile voice seemingly drained of emotion and yet possessing an inherent charm, a detachment that might be both the antithesis of style and its definition, whether it's heard as sensitivity or indifference. The singing is a double of his trumpet playing here, spare and barely present but achieving much through nuance and suggestion. Pianist Russ Freeman is an almost constant partner, supplying deft chords and harmonic daring, amplifying Baker's ideas. Their empathy is especially evident in the beautiful instrumental "Moon Love," but it's just as significant on signature Baker songs such as "My Funny Valentine," "Let's Get Lost," and "Like Someone in Love." --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars My Funny Valentine - Chet Baker.......2007-06-08

Dreadful shame this man died so young. So much talent both singing and playing the trumpet. A smooth, easy listening cd. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Sultry and Simply Spectacular!.......2007-01-05

This music is perfect for a rainy day curled up on the couch by the fire with your significant other by your side. It's a shame they don't make music like this anymore. My favorite of all Chet's albums and one of my all-time favorites period. His rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is my personal favorite (even trumping Sinatra's wonderful version). There is not one song that disappoints, the whole CD is an absolute treasure. The man knew his limitations as a singer, and although he wasn't blessed with a voice like 'Ol Blue Eyes' or Johnny Hartman it's the raw emotion that he puts into the songs and the way he is able to phrase them (ala Billie Holiday) that makes it so special. Also his trumpet playing is absolutely superb as usual. One of the most romantic albums you will ever hear! I promise you will not be disappointed. Now go out and buy it now and play it on that special date with the woman (or man) of your dreams.

The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Easy Listening.......2006-09-21

Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing Music.......2006-09-11

I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

More hard-boiled tales from Tom Waits, who manages to sing lines like "Everyone I know is either dead or in prison" in a raw, whiskey-soaked rasp that sounds both comical and deadly serious. Waits doesn't break any new creative ground here, but continues to refine his down-and-out ham-and-egger persona. It's booze and broads, sex and violence, laughs and heartbreak. This 1978 album opens with an astonishingly desperate version of "Somewhere" (from "West Side Story"), performed like Louie Armstrong with a migraine. From there it's the usual Waits mix of crackpot wordplay and the cocktail lounge jazz likes of "Romeo Is Bleeding." --Steve Appleford

5 out of 5 stars Some of Tom Waits Best........2007-07-06

I would highly recomend this album for the Tom Waits fan and the Tom Waits curious.
I am a big Tom Waits fan myself, and this album is one of my favorites. It's from his earlier stuff, and shows us a bit of a transition from his crooner stuff, to the more weird and wacky. the songs are great, at times like orchestra crooner stuff, and at times real jazzy.
I recomend this to the person Curious about Tom waits because it shows his unique side, yet it is still very accessable to someone used to more mainstream stuff.
Great Album! Get it!

4 out of 5 stars Waits in fine form..........2007-01-29

"Blue Valentine" has a tendency to be dismissed as a so called "transitional" album, being that it is sandwiched into the period between Waits' critically acclaimed early albums and his mid-career foray into the unique instrumentation and free form music of his "Rain Dogs" period. In my opinion when Waits' career is viewed as whole, every one of his albums could be classified as "transitional" works, because the man is constantly moving forward with his music and moving into new territory with each record he puts out. That being said, "Blue Valentine" is a great and underrated album. In my opinion the title track is one of the most desperate songs Waits ever recorded, and the spare instrumentation and Waits' gravelly voice perfectly captures the mood of paranoia he sings of. The lyrics to the song "Blue Valentines" are one of the best examples of Waits' talent as a songwriter, as he describes a man who abandoned his lover and was tracked down by her and continues to receive her letters. The lines "it feels like theres a warrant out for my arrest, you've got me checkin in my rearview mirror, and I'm always on the run, thats why I changed my name, and I didn't think you'd ever find me here", and his descriptions of a blind and broken heart and nights full of whiskey are true genius. The song has remained one of my favorites of his over the years. I also think that Waits' voice was at it's best on this album and "Heartattack and Vine". The grit and rasp of his pipes on these two albums are unbelievable. The other thing about "Blue Valentine" that stands out to me is "$29.00", a straight up slow blues jam that goes on for a little over eight minutes. To hear Waits use his voice in a pure blues setting is rare, and he spits out the lyrics with his acid growl in a way that would make Howlin' Wolf blush. All the instrumental solos on that song are tight, and I find myself continuing to play that song again and again. "Wrong Side Of The Road" and "Whistlin' Past The Graveyard" are two others where his voice is unbelievable. The classic "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" is another of Waits' tales of down and out individuals, and has a jazzy piano accompaniment. I also think that "Kentucky Avenue" is one of Waits' best ballads, and always gives a tug at my heartstrings when I hear it. To me, the only turnoff to this album is Waits' rendition of "Somewhere" from West Side Story. While it was definitely an interesting choice for him as far as cover tunes are concerned, it just never grabbed me, although I wouldn't say it's bad. While critics may say that Waits didn't break any new ground on this album lyrically or musically, I think they missed the boat. This is a solid album, and Waits melded the blues, jazz, and symphonic music onto one disc and somehow managed to tie it all together in a way that makes sense. While this may not fall into the category of essential Tom Waits, this is good music. I can't make it any simpler than that.

4 out of 5 stars A jazzy, story-telling classic.......2007-01-02

On first listen (as with many Waits records), BLUE VALENTINE comes off as overly complicated, a mixture of various instruments and lyrics telling rather depressing stories, including the one about a prostitute begging a former lover for money, or the one about a crippled boy's dreams, or the one about a girl lost in the big city who gets taken advantage of. All of it told in that menacing growl, a voice that seems to demand that you NOT listen to these stories, that they are real and thus too disturbing for you.

But that's just the point: the songs on this album ARE disturbing at times--but at the same time, there's poetic irony and satire that almost makes you laugh. Romeo may be bleeding, "but not so's you'd notice." And good ol' Santa Claus is "drunk in the ski room." There's also some vague, hesitant tenderness: "Tell that little girl to let go of my sleeve/You'll be a woman when I catch you/As you fall in love with me." Waits's cast of characters is, as always, dragged from the trenches of real life, and their stories unfold as would yours or mine, if we happened to find ourselves in their situations. Hopefully, we'd have someone as talented as Waits to tell our tales.

4 out of 5 stars Romeo is Bleeding is a masterpiece. The album has gems just not all throughout........2006-03-27

I always considered this and Heart Attack and Vine as his two lesser 70's works (with Closing Time even less, yet all filled with beauty). However, there's some songs on here that are some of his best ever:
Somewhere is one of the great covers of all time. He finds all the emotion in this song. Stunning.
Red Shoes he's done for years live. Nice.
Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis is a true story taking us in the mail from brave face to honesty. Touching.
Romeo Is Bleeding is one of his finest songs. Period. A touch of Spanish, almost a West Side Story feel to the song. This song always moves me when I hear it.
A Sweet Little Bullet From A Pretty Blue Gun. I love the sound of this song. The title is typical of his way with words that sound even better in the context of his unique musical style.
Blue Valentines is another song with heart.

I wouldn't buy this album first. If you want a 70's Tom Waits album get either Heart of Saturday Night or Small Change or Nighthawks at the Diner first. If/when you love any or all three of them, then you have permission to get this and Heart Attack and Vine, two solid but less consistent albums. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars so worth looking back.......2006-01-22

First off, I'm a Tom Waits junkie. So if I appear slightly biased, it's because I am.
I have been acquiring all the Tom Waits music I can and have everything that's available. Since I had most of the songs on this cd on other cds, I had passed this one by. What a mistake! If the only song on the cd was "Kentucky Avenue" it would be well worth the cost and the effort. This song sung by someone else, without the voice and the sincerity of Mr. Waits might have sounded like a cheap effort to bring on the tears, but his delivery is so touching I feel like I'm eavesdroping on a special and private conversation. It's a story really of what would seem to be a 9 year old or so talking to a friend, sharing gossip and making big plans. The love and tenderness being shown by one friend to another is devestating. It goes beyond touching the listener's heart, and goes straight to the listener's soul.
The same goes for "$29 and an Alligator Purse", "Blue Valentine" -- there's not a bad song in the bunch. The background music is some of the best blues ever played.
I can't imagine anyone buying this cd and being dissappointed with it.

Three years before 1991's Loveless, My Bloody Valentine's masterwork of impossibly dense soundscapes, the Dublin quartet offered some fairly affecting dream pop on its first full-length album, Isn't Anything. Both worthy of Creation's "shoe-gazing" heritage and skewed enough to stand up next to pre-grunge guitar bands like Sonic Youth and the Pixies, the record makes the most of a group that hadn't yet found its bearings. And at its best, Isn't Anything hints at how great it will be when their sonic discoveries are finally honed. --Roni Sarig

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars When You Wake, You're Still In A Dream.......2007-06-07

Isn't Anything is seen by many as just a precursor to My Bloody Valentine's next release (magnum opus) Loveless. Although I like this one a lot more.
This is a Guitar Rock album without the Guitars. Instead they were stripped down and deleted, only leaving the endless reverb and guitar effects.
To me, it sounds like a wonderfully soothing daydream haze. Ahhh yes! That shoegazer 'staring at our shoes' type of sound. This basically defined the genre and My Bloody Valentine were one of it's first and it's best.
In 1988 when Isn't Anything was released, MBV came into their own, crafting their sound, defining their basic approach with sensual washes of feedback and influencing upcoming bands like Ride and Lush.
Before the Band formed, lead singer/guitarist - Kevin Sheilds was greatly inspired by the wave of noisy US indie underground bands going on in the mid 80s. Bands like Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Big Black and Husker Du - who showed off the sonic intensity of what the Guitar was capable of.
The European audiences were paying attention. And many bands soon followed.
On "Isn't Anything" My Bloody Valentine redefined their earlier sound although they still maintained their 'jangly pop' persona. Just made it more accessible containing tighter structured songs, despite all the noise.
"Feed Me With Your Kiss" (the Hit) is a montague of guitar bursts, heavy drummin', with Kevin Sheilds and Bilinda Butcther's sweet boy/girl vocals. A staple that is considered a MBV trademark.
I love Bilinda Butcher's different types of moods which she portrays throughout. From the abstract-like pain ridden lyrics on "No More Sorry" to a sexier but distant voice on "Several Girls Galore"
This darker side can be felt and heard in the chorus on "Sueisfine" which goes from "Sue is Fine" to "Suicide" w/o a change in emotion at all.
"Soft as Snow"(But Warm Inside) opens with a Drum countdown....to Deb Googe's funkified bassline, while B. Butcher backs Sheilds with her sweet soundin and sexy OOoh Oooh - like a Ambulance siren is set off.
"Lose My Breath" is just a pure daydream to listen to. So soothing and peaceful. Probably my Favorite track on all of "Isn't Anythings" 38 minutes.
Unfortunately Loveless was the last album by My Bloody Valentine back in '91. Leaving in their wake one of Rock's great what-if's. Kevin Sheilds has been saying for years he is interested in a future project with the Band, but who knows when that would be. Oh well...
-Isn't Anything is a creative innovation, spawning many similar bands afterwards, but few could compare to it's genius and the Band behind it.

3 out of 5 stars Myth: "Isn't Anything" is anywhere near "Loveless".......2007-05-26

To claim that "Isn't Anything" is even in the same stratosphere as "Loveless," as a number of reviewers here do, is just plain innacurate. As any fan will tell you, My Bloody Valentine's next offering "Loveless," not only ushered in the entire "shoegazer" genre, but is still the best album of its kind. But it's more than this -- indeed "Loveless" remains a timeless classic, and, from a personal point of view, holds a position as one of my ten favorite rock albums of all time (whereas "Isn't Anything" probably wouldn't be in my top one thousand).

Sure, there are certainly moments on "Isn't Anything" where we can detect a glimmer of the brilliance to come. I would even say that one of the songs, namely "(When You Wake) You're Still In A Dream," can almost hold its own amongst the many gems on "Loveless." "Sueisfine" intrigues me, because I'm quite sure the band intentionally made the chorus sound like "suicide." "You Never Should" and "Nothing Much to Lose" work fairly well as lively pop songs. But if we're going to be truly honest, the best we can say of "Isn't Anything," is that it's a decent album that precedes "Loveless." Period.

4 out of 5 stars More mainstream, but no less hypnotically sexual.......2007-04-09

As the quiet before the storm, or the alchemist for "My Bloody Valentine's" zenith album Loveless-- which was a benchmark that culminated the modern shoegaze/dream-pop genre--Isn't Anything is more mainstream (you can actually hear most of the vocals here) but is no less sexual, and trancelike, utilizing dreamy and almost tangible soundscapes that make it seem like you can actually sink your teeth into their sonics. Many of the nation's current youth might actually like this better than Loveless, as the approach to the material is more "Sonic Youth" by way of "Joy Division," less "Cocteau Twins" by way of "The Jesus and Mary Chain," and is an incredible album showcasing Kevin Shields as possibly the best guitarist/musical composer to get a start in the late 1980's.

Started with the sensual track, Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside), with Shields clear vocals, and alluring lyrics, and Blinda Butcher's soothing, lush, and lustful backing voice; mixing to create a warm `n fuzzy sensation down there, and engorging the listener with hormonal intuition. "My Bloody Valentine" is hot n' saucy, showcasing a come-hither flirtation, and giving the listener a heartening mood with such excerpts like, "Soft as velvet eyes can see, bringing me close to ecstasy:" that blisters into a blazing and crusading instrument solo that spirals into some fuzz tone, and Butcher's "ohhing"-backing chime to bring the song to its final conclusion. Then moving into the track, Lose My Breath, a delicate mood piece of beauty, with an airy subtleness, making it tantalizing, and despite its seemingly skimpy backbeats and languid feel, it's still never futile. Then shortly later, the hard-rocking, When you Wake (Your Still In a Dream,) shows that they are a band that never gets into shambolic lengthy babble; rather its predetermined entropy.

All I Need is the least interesting and unmemorable spot on the album, at least when propped up to their other tracks, that also contain this backing "ohhing" and that off center vocal, yet is gladly remedied with Feed Me With Your Kiss, and its grueling instrument line, giving the listener a hurtling frenzy of kinky sex; while, Sueisfine, has this hard-rockin' edge, and features one of the most brilliant lyric tweaks, from the chorus that changes from "Sue-is-fine" into "Su-i-cide," a true change of mood into bleaker darklands. Or take the wispy, Several Girls Galore, the poetic and subtler, No More Sorry, and, You Never Should, as well as the concluding waves of noise in, Nothing Much to Lose, and I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It,) all seeming like "My Bloody Valentine" is dropping bombs of musical ingenuity into the audiences eardrums to get them to no know what good musical noise is made of: thus bringing this album of sexuality to a close, and creating a memorable and nerve-pleasuring experience.

With 1991's "Loveless", My Bloody Valentine produced a landmark album that would redefine the boundaries for independent music. Yet if "Loveless" was the "Revolver" of the early 1990's, then "Isn't Anything" was the band's "Rubber Soul"- the moment when the band took the game to the next level of sophistication, setting themselves another notch above the competition. This album, judged by the production values of 1988, was the great leap forward. The melodies are lush and beautiful but you have to go searching for them in the opiate fuzz of the shimmering layers of guitar noise. It is well worth the effort. The interplay of melody of distortion on this record is what makes this record so rewarding. The sweetness of the best tunes finds its perfect counterpoint in the drone and fuzz of the guitars. The mix of acidity and sweetness is just right here- a feature that is oddly reminiscent of the other great alternative album from 1988, Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation". Whilst My Bloody Valentine would raise their art one step higher with "You Made Me Realise" later in the year, they were already on the heights with this release. Buy this record, one of the best of the late 1980's and retire to a hazy, fuzzy, bittersweet nirvana.

4 out of 5 stars my bloody valentine Is Something.......2007-01-08

You know, it's kind of ironic, my experience with this group. I thought of 'em as a real head-scratcher band when I heard "Loveless" a couple years ago, one of the first times I realized that "indie" music wouldn't come to me as easily as I had initially thought. However, there was a romantic overtone and nice tunes that fascinated me at the same time and while I don't think it's 5-star good, this album sort of warmed me up to it.

It's a pretty solid album throughout. It's not the overproduced experiment of "Loveless," but rather, more them making pop songs in the vein of Jesus and Mary Chain. They still have their own identity though. Feedback rules over "All I Need." My favorite two songs are "Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)" and "No More Sorry," which showed that they had genious in them before their highly praised swan song. I wish I enjoyed the second half as much as the first, but it's alright.
