Sometimes You Scare Me

I keep wanting to say they are anthem rock but I wouldn't have a definition for such a term...

Truckfighter E-Zine
Durian from Washington DC is kind of like the missing link between pop-punk and more artsy rock/pop...

Album Description
"Sometimes you scare me" has been described as an Indie Rock meeting of the minds. A super energetic uplifting blend of killer rock and arty-punk... The singer's voice is Durian's most distinguising feature- a huge, sweeping thing with a wild pitch and manic falsetto that punches life into every note that escapes his mouth. Guitars whir, chime, and explode, the bass locks in like a vault, and drums skitter all over the canvas. The height of the album is reached at "Bend & Grab", as the lyrics are truly involving, the dynamics sheer and exilarating, and the tension a tangible element.

5 out of 5 stars me review.......2004-01-07

First and foremost these guys have more sharp turns than a race track, more dynamics than an airplane; amazing rhythm and tightness. And there not weird like prog rock, this is really cool, but just as complex. Im into stuff like The Wicked Farleys, Don Cab, and At the Drive In. Durian is right up there with those legends. Purchase this CD IMMEDIATELY!

5 out of 5 stars Still awfully lovable........2003-10-08

To disspell any sort of confusion, the derek listed somewhere below this review is not me. Sure, Frank was a little concerned with his wardrobe sometimes and Cameron had a troubling habit of using certain substances before making long drives through I-95 and heavy DC traffic, but nothing would cause me to rate the group I had the pleasure of filling in on drums for with anything less than the full five-star rating. And it ain't just nepotism. This disc has and will continue to remain in heavy play for me.

Don't take the easy way out, guffawing and slapping high-fives over nailing yet another comment on how much like (insert popular DC band here) everything on "SYSM" sounds: these songs remain urgent, fresh, and compelling as they were on first listen. "Range Rover" , "Dogtrack" (sorry, Frank), "Goodwill" all drive right through you... and if you find a more perfectly-composed song than "Press Stop," well, buddy, please forward it to me, because I don't believe you. If you don't have this disc already, there's a spot in your collection just waiting to be filled. Trust me: even after months of playing the songs again and again, there's something about this album that refuses to tarnish with age.

5 out of 5 stars An Experienced and Exotic Lover, Durian Ruined Me Forever.......2001-05-17

I met a beautiful woman from Spain while traveling in Madagascar. She taught me how to love and appreciate the delicate brilliance of Durian. I thought myself well versed in the ways of rock, with my collection of Burning Airlines', Dismemberment Plan, Wicked Farleys', Soul Coughing, and Air records.

Amateurs.

Durian doesn't tease or condescend. Durian was patient and understanding and found my artlessness endearing. The numerous bands that I had heard before, that at one time meant the world to me, were forgotten and I soon realized that their sole purpose in my life was to merely prepare me for Durian. Since those sleepless nights in Southeast Asia, Durian has departed. Now I find myself sleepless in my bed at home, my sweaty body entangled in the sheets, lying face down in discomfort and unease, wondering when I will hear such sonic opuses again.

Never shall I be touched the same way again.

Damn you Durian!

Damn me for finding you and for listening to you and for thinking that I could hold you forever.

Now I hear that you have moved on. Skilled Labor, is it? I hear that you have changed, that some that you are ready to settle down and that you have been asking about me. Arborvitae Records Says that you might be in town this summer and that you've thought to contact me but the music never came out just so. So?

I'm here for you Skilled Labor and I'll always be your friend.

2 out of 5 stars Unoriginal, though promising.......2001-02-09

I was initially drawn to Durian after reading fawning reviews in various e-zines and even downloading the odd mp3 from the band's site. At first glance and an initial cursory listen, all the requisite pieces seemed to be in place- intricate arrangements and emotive vocals with an earthy DC sensibility. Unfortunately, disc in hand, things didn't pan out quite as I had expected. The major stumbling block is how derivative this band is-most blatantly the vocals. Put bluntly, Durian's vocalist sounds uncomfortably similar to Craig Wedren of Shudder to Think- the pitch, the timbre, the signature warble, it's all there. Given that this band hails from DC and plays the sort of fractured riffs and odd time signatures characteristic of STT, it's hard to imagine that this resemblance isn't deliberate. There are other (by some criteria more substantive) problems with the music itself as well. The melodies are neither memorable nor gripping, and though the band does demonstrate a hearteningly gymnastic instrumental muscle, the songs aren't very effective at creating any sort of mood. It's either pop without hooks or math rock without structure and ends up tepidly in between. The good news is that the mere fact that Durian is capable of writing and playing these songs shows that there is ample room for improvement. Hopefully, they won't be satisfied to simply reproduce their predecessors' sound, and will eventually be inspired to carve out their own niche.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Band.......2000-07-30

One of the most refreshingly new albums I have heard in a long time. These guys rock!
