Perfect Drug [CD-single]

Editorial Reviews

Here's where the trippier directions of the electronic movement run smack into its Sturm-und-Drang industrial heritage. Trent Reznor's peak achievement through 1997 is reshaped five times over with profoundly weighty beats, dub textures, and trance soundscapes. The Orb's mix, which makes Reznor sound like he's drowning in his bathtub, is a bit silly, but otherwise this is fascinating stuff. --Jeff Bateman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars A Top-Ten Electornic Album.......2007-07-12

(Background: I am a NIN fan, he's perhaps second only to Simon Posford on my list. Further, I'm an electronica fan. I love the stuff. I WRITE the stuff. Lastly, I NEVER HEARD the original song, don't own the soundtrack, and don't care to.)

This is absolutely one of the best purchases I have ever made.

Perhaps if you're an NIN fan for the lyrics (?!?) or the "heavy metal" aspects, then you would not like this album. There's barely 60 seconds of vocals on this disk, and they're all just repeating the same three lines, where they do show up.

No, no... this is an *electronic* album. Beeps, bells, pads, overdrive, and often drowning in effects.

And a *blissful* electronic album this is. One of the best discs of all time, in its arena.

NIN's version of the song on this is is an amazing, hectic mix that just seems to crescendo and not come down for many minutes... you can almost get tired just listening to it. I put it in the top-five songs NIN's ever done, if you're into the heavier stuff. It's a solid wall of sound.

The other tracks on this disc range from just really bizarre to quite catchy... Space Time Continuum's version is probably the best track they've ever done! :)

This is NOT an album for everyone. It's very heavy, very dark, and very digital. ...So I don't often recommend this album. But when I do, the response is almost always "Holy @#$*, I can't believe I haven't heard this before!" I've never played this album for someone without having them go out and immediately buy it. :)

This is a true gem.

This Album is 5 remixes that sound nothing like the song, I don't actually know why I bought this. If you love remixes that sound nothing like the original thing, buy this cd, you might like this.

I am going to get straight to the point. If you are not a HUGE nin fan nor are you collecting all the singles and albums i would not recomend you purchase this cd. it does not include the original version of the song (which is the only good version i have heard) . only the japanese import includes it as a 6th track.

i purchased this cd when it came out 10 years ago, and i was disapointed. the mixes are long drawn out and just do not catch your ear.

but , like i said, if you are a collector of NIN cds, it is essential just like everything else. so for that matter, its worth the 6 bucks.

but if your not a HUGE fan, i wouldnt buy it.

1 out of 5 stars The Perfect Drug.......2006-11-19

Absolute Rubbish, not even close to the brilliance of the original recording. If you loved the original like I did you will hate this.

5 out of 5 stars the perfect single.......2006-05-02

One of my personal favorite halos! I think some of the haters have their collective heads up their butts when they say this and fixed are too weird. Come on!! Get out of your parents dank and dingy basements and live!! Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

    1 out of 5 stars Not Availible.......2007-03-06

Just buy "The perfect Drug Versions" and the original version is on iTunes, "Lost Highway Soundtrack" or one of the "We're in this Together" singles. These all all great songs, would be nice to have them all in once package...

    5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic and enjoyable--and complete........2006-03-31

The Perfect Drug remixes are likely to throw off most un- and under-informed purchasers, who (as I have heard numerous times) were expecting something much more faithful the original version of the song that first appeared on the Lost Highway Soundtrack. That is not to say that the CD isn't good; far from it, it's quite innovative and fun to listen to. But like other NIN remixes (think Fixed or particular songs like "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)"), The Perfect Drug goes far away from the original drum-and-bass recording of "The Perfect Drug" and opts for a much more rave-friendly, house electronica-inspired sound. Each track is drawn from a different artist, offering a diverse array of sounds that all tie in to a similar theme of the hypnotic electronic. I personally think that Meat Beat Manifesto's mix of the song is brilliant--perhaps the very best on the CD--but each track is worth several listens, although some take more patience than others depending on your stylistic preferences (I actually had the hardest time with the Nine Inch Nails version, but I've come to accept it).

For a Nine Inch Nails remix CD, this disc is very successful. I recommend it for any open-minded NIN fan and for those who have a penchant for dark electronica.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing remixes.......2005-07-15

This remix album is very interesting featuring 6 remixes. The first 2 are amazing and the NIN mix is great also.

4 out of 5 stars Solid remixes of a great song!.......2001-01-20

There are two kinds of NIN remix albums: the very-remixed, commercially accessible albums (such as FDTS and TFA), and the heavily remixed, not-as-accessible albums (such as Fixed). In my opinion, The Perfect Drug Versions falls into the second category. Casual listeners of NIN will be very confused by these mixes, as they heavily deviate from the original song.

All the songs have a club, jungle, or drums `n' bass feel to them, yet they all vastly differ, which is intriguing to see how various bands interpret a song. The Meat Beat Manifesto version uses the violin segment looped throughout most of the song, along with a slew of drums. The Plug version is more electronic, and feels very atmospheric. The Nine Inch Nails remix of their own song is heavier and darker than any of the others, and feels very frantic and moody. Spacetime Continuum's version is lighter and subdued than the others, but tends to be very repetitive. Out of the five versions on this disc, this version sounds the least like the original version, and in my opinion, deviates too far to be enjoyable. The Orb's version starts off very spacey, and sounds almost nothing like the original song. It improves near the middle of the song, but this, along with SC, aren't as good as the first three tracks.

Fans who have followed NIN throughout the years will be very happy with this album, although people who are only familiar of NIN through radio cuts will be disappointed. I'd give this CD a higher rating, but SC and The Orb's versions aren't strong enough in my opinion to warrant an excellent rating.

On a side note, the non-US versions of TPD have "The Perfect Drug" as a bonus sixth track. Recent NIN releases have The Perfect Drug as a b-side, but I feel it is worth your while to get the import for the extra track.

    4 out of 5 stars .......2000-06-27

this is a fairly good cd, but i wouldnt recomened it to a new nin fan as some of the remixes dont sound like nin to much. the first mix is the best. i only give the u.s. version two stars, but this england/japan import has the origional version of perfect drug on its as the bonus track. i recomended spending the extra money for this version rather than the american version.

3 out of 5 stars The Perfect Drug remixes.......2000-06-26

This import of the perfect drug contains remixes by Meat Beat Manifesto, Plug, Nine inch nails, Spacetime continuum, and The orb. over all a pretty cool cd.Nine inch nails is the best band to be invented And Trent Reznor is a genius. Marilyn Manson would not be here today without the help of Trent Reznor. Nine inch nails now has 17 halos for those of you who are not collectors, enthusists, or obsessed maniacs(like me for instince)halos are the cds nine inch nails has made. By this cd if you can find it cause there not going to around forever.

5 out of 5 stars good cd but we've had it before.......2000-09-26

i give this one 5 stars because all the songs are great. but really... if you want the original mix of the perfect drug so badly why not just the import of the original halo eleven? same track listing and an actual halo... neither this cd or the into the void single qualify as halos, thus making them substandard material? i don't think they ever needed to be released at all.

      2 out of 5 stars What's the point?.......2000-08-15

Okay, so I've read that this would be a great CD for serious NIN collectors. Of course, if you already ARE are a serious nin collector, then you'd have all these tracks already, wouldn't you? EVEN IF you didn't own "Lost Highway," the original version of Perfect Drug is on one of the WITTN discs (3rd one, I think.) Anyway, this release has irritated me as much as the last one (Into the Void), as it only has pre-released material. And before that, I had to buy 3 discs for a couple (weak) remixes. Trent, I love ya man, but come on here, we waited five years for this? Regurgitated material is seriously disappointing. Give us something more....

4 out of 5 stars Same great cd, with one extra song........2000-08-09

This CD is great. It contains the Perfect Drugs remixes contained on the US verson of Halo11, but it also has the original version of the song from the Lost Highway soundtrack. A good buy for any serious NIN collector.
