After the out-of-nowhere success of Licensed to Ill, the Beasties had to prove they were more than one-album wonders, and they hit it out of the park with this follow-up. The Boys' lyrics are a hysterical deluge of cultural allusion (Ponce De Leon, Sadaharu Oh, and Love Connection's Chuck Woolery all get name-dropped), compressed wordplay, and adenoidal snottiness, but the real stars are the Dust Brothers, whose production is a hip-hop landmark. Their music tracks sound like the history of rock and funk radio boiled down to a pure concentrate--monster jams built out of thousands of unexpected samples (Johnny Cash! The Sweet!). It's a killer party album, kinetic and dense, and it never slows down. --Douglas Wolk

One of the best albums of all time.......2007-06-27
Love this album. When I first got it, I asked myself "what is this?" The album was so different I had to get used to it. There are so many different new things on here that it just doesn't get old. Great album!!!
All I remember is the green cassette tape.......2007-03-23
Buying this tape after 'Licence' was a true mind bender. At first, no one knew what to make of the sound - frankly, all my friends thought it kinda sucked. Soooooo far ahead of it's time. Took a while, but it took a few listens to realize what a great sound this was/is. Classic.
Sonically brilliant but still overrated.......2007-01-08
Yes, you heard me. And I don't even dislike the Beasties; I enjoy them. I do appreciate them for doing something totally different at the time. That being said, the reviews everyone who's heard it give you would make you believe you were hearing a masterpiece. It's not quite. For one thing, it sounds a bit dated now. Maybe releasing a re-master of this disc wouldn't do too bad. The songs aren't really terrible, but none are actually "best I've ever heard" type songs, which by default would maximize it at a four star rating for me. Unlike the reviewer below me, I actually think "Egg Man" is one of the album's greatest songs, and that sample is one of the things that makes it what it is. That nine-part track at the end is fine but I'm glad they put it at the end because it goes on for a bit too long. Some of the interludes here irritate me as well, including that pointless twangy track.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy "Paul's Boutique." Just know that what everyone tells you isn't quite always the case. It's not as bad as it was viewed back in the day, but it's also not as good as people are letting you believe it is today. Maybe other records by them are closer to my style. "Check Your Head" blows it out of the water. They've done better and later on this record was improved upon. Albums from DJ Shadow and Beck also show this.
Easily the best Beastie Boys album..........2006-11-22
Hey, what's up? This is my first review. At first I didn't feel it was necessary; Paul's Boutique already has five stars, and deserves every one of them. Still, the quality of this record compelled me to express my thoughts on it, too.
This album is near perfect. The only track I feel is weak (and it's not even that bad) is Egg Man. I didn't dig it at first... but it grew on me, so I'll give it a listen, now, especially for the sampling (as mentioned by another reviewer).
Every single track on the album is linked. I think this adds alot to it, because it's like a non-stop track. Very enjoyable. If you're looking for a great hip-hop album or want to get into the Beastie Boys, definitely cop this album. Solid Gold Hits isn't great, and the anthology isn't worth it. All Beastie Boys albums pale in comparison to this sucker. Get Paul's Boutique.
Music for aliens..........2006-11-18
In 1986, Licensed to Ill hit the market. It was one of the first CDs I ever owned and it was in my CD player nonstop for that year. Led Zeppelin samples? Say what? I had never heard anything like it. Saw them on their tour that year with Murphy's Law and Fishbone. I've loved what they do every since.
Though I've gotten older and the novelty has worn off I try and seek out quality rap/hip-hop releases. Most of what passes for rap/hip-hop is derivate drivel. But as I listened to this the other day I realized that as they've gotten older they've also gotten smarter. What they do is intentional and they are very skilled at their mastery of production. Paying homage to great music of old and an affection for cultural artifacts, these guys know they are making music for aliens.
If aliens were to visit us and wished to understand our culture this is the only thing we need to give them. In two hundred years this will be an archaelogical wonder bar none. With the funkiest of samples and rhymes that capture pop culture in a nutshell, this is truly a record that requires repeated listening. An amazing collage of samples and riffs from tunes well known and not so well known with a wealth of pop culture knowledge contained in the lyrics this is just plain fun.

Totally uneven collection of remixes and B-sides...misses all his 80s synthpop gems.......2007-02-03
This collection of Paul Haig's synth-driven 12"s and b-sides could have been much stronger had it focused more on the 12" versions from his two mid-80s solo LPs, "Rhythm of Life" and "The Warp of Pure Fun," both of which only get a hint of recognition here, although, those mixes alone make this a crucial buy. The biggest problem is the omission of Paul's first 12" single "Running Away", which was not on any of his albums. It should be here, considering they included "Time" the b-side to the original track! This collection takes us all the way through the 80s and even has some horribly out of place singles from the 90s. Here's a breakdown:
1. Time (5:51) very mellow new wave synth feel and vocals, sounding more like one of those songs recorded in the late 70s before new wave artists really tapped into the power of the synthesizer.
2. Chance (5:56) really annoying song, with a funky bass, very few vocals, and not quite catchy vocals at that. Sounds very experimental.
3. Blue For You (interference mix) (5:00) Very different than the versions on the rhythm of Life CD. It's a funky synth dance track--kinda reminds me of Gang of Four's more danceable stuff.
4. Change of Heart (5:07) Synth explosion! This one is all about keyboard sequences, with the vocals taking a backseat. Gets a little grating after a while.
5. Fear and Dancing (3:36) A catchy track with pulsing bass line and a Blancmange feel and vocals.
6. The Executioner (5:19) An experimental synth track with no singing, just spoken voice samples. This could have been exchanged for "Running Away!"
7. Love Eternal (5:12) nice 12" version of this synthpop ballad from Paul's second LP.
8. The Only truth (7:09) Awesome new wave synthpop--but the 12" mix doesn't remix it to make it a dance version. What a shame.
9. This Dying Flame (6:33) A fantastic mellow new wave synth gem reminiscent of New Order, but I'd hoped the 12" version was a dance mix, which could have made this a huge club hit. It's not. It's just an extended version.
10. Heaven Help You Now (mantronik mix) (4:09) this is a painfully bad mix of a fantastic synthpop gem from Paul's "the Warp of Pure Fun" album. I wish they would have used the 8 minute 12" mix. This Mantronik mix has a funk bass line and a horribly clunky beat that robs the song of its gentle flow.
11. Reach the Top (5:16) recorded in 1987 and it shows. Catchy song with great new wave hooks, but it's missing that dance driven drum machine charm of earlier new wave tracks.
12. Swinging for You (4:28) a gloomy synth ballad that picks up a little at the end--actually gets sorta overdramatic.
13. the Electrician (6:33) Total experimental synth ambience from 1998. It's out of place on this collection, which should have stuck to the 80s music! Not much vocal.
14. the Shining (5:36) Same miserable story as track 13. Even less vocal--and not melodic vocal.
15. Psycho San Jose (2:10) Simply bizarre noise that sounds like it could have been used in an artsy western movie in the late 80s/early 90s. What a waste of disc space.
Personally, I would have replaced the tracks I trashed above with the 12" versions of "running away," "big blue world," "heaven help you now," "Justice," and "Never Give Up."

Customer Reviews:
Top notch mostly 1950s mono recordings in excellent sound.......2005-11-10
"Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music" consists mostly of top notch 1950s mono recordings in excellent sound, from DG's back catalog. I knew of Ferenc Fricsay (1914-1963) mostly from his recording of Bartok's Piano Concertos 1,2,and 3 with pianist Geza Anda. Fricsay also recorded Mozart's operas "Don Giovanni" and "Die Zauberflote", both with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the cast for DG; also Beethoven's 9th Symphony; Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra", and "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta", all for DG. Fricsay did not live a long time, dying at age 48 from cancer, but he made alot of recordings from 1949 until his death in 1963, many of them sadly hidden in DG's vaults for decades.
DG has given the public a great release with this 9 disc set of Fricsay recordings, mostly in mono, but excellent sound. Do not be afraid of the mono sound: it is very clear and balanced, in many cases better than many stereo and even digital recordings made more recently. Included are Beethoven's Symphony 1; Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with the vocal duets included; Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony; Franck's Symphonic variations and Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations with Swiss pianist Margrit Weber; Haydn's "The Seasons" (complete, live performance with Maria Stader, Ernst Haeflinger, and Joseph Greindl); works of Falla, Francaix, Hindemith, Frank Martin, Hartmann, and others. There is a wide variety of music and you will not be disappointed.
Most of these recordings are with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, which Fricsay conducted for the majority of his conducting career. The RIAS orchestra was "Radio in the American sector" of Berlin, a part of West Berlin during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Some tracks are with the Berlin Philharmonic, others with the Berlin Radio Orchestra. In all cases, the orchestras play very well, responding with great precision to every nuance of Fricsay's direction.
I believe Fricsay would have wider recognition had he lived longer. He was roughly a contemporary of Karajan, Solti, Giulini, and Bernstein, and is sadly underrated today. Perhaps this collection will help to boost his reputation with a new generation of music lovers born after his time. Highly recommended.
A great conductor's legacy of great performances of music of a wide variety of composers........2005-09-18
Some two years after Mr. Richman posted his review, I wish only to support his high rating of these masterful performances by one of the greatest conductors of the mid-twentieth century. These recordings are gifts of grace. The fact that this collection remains available is little short of a miracle. And in addition thre is a Fricsay set in the series of "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" also still available. Many other recordings of performances under the baton of Ferenc Fricsay are to be found if one searches under his name on Amazon. His recordings of Verdi's Requiem and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on DG remain among the greatest ever made of either of these two eternal masterpieces.
Try the $12.00 2CD "great Conductors" set first. At that price you can't lose. I predict that having heard those recordings you will quickly seek out and purchase "Ferenc Fricsay, A Life in Music." Too expensive? Not at all. It's worth every penny. It's easily worth several months of anyone's budget for buying CDs. And the recorded interview with Fricsay, already ill and seemingly knowing his death is approaching, will inspire you even as it breaks your heart. His death as he approached his 40th birthday was an incalculable loss to the Western classical tradition. Yet we do have the recordings -- go and listen to them!
Brilliant "Life in Music" Rescued from the Vaults.......2003-08-13
Now that Deutsche Grammophon is part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up.
Now in its second round of the "Original Masters" box sets, DG has chosen to follow-up on the success of the "Great Conductors of the Century" series. They have just released two glorious 9-disc collections of the performances of conductors Ferenc Fricsay and Igor Markevitch, the vast majority of which have been previously unavailable on CD.
This particular set, "A Life in Music," showcases some of the numerous recordings made by the great conductor Ferenc Fricsay for Deutsche Grammophon, many of which have been rare (and expensive) collector's items for years. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance.
The first disc contains Beethoven's 1st Symphony (1953) and the Overture and Incidental Music to Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1950) both with the Berlin Philharmonic (BP), and Prokofiev's 1st Symphony with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) from 1954.
Disc two features Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder with Maureen Forrester (BRSO, 1958), and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony (BRSO, 1959).
Discs three begins with Respighi's orchestration of Rossini's La Boutique Fantasque (BRSO, 1955) and ends with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade (BRSO, 1956).
Disc four features the great Waltzes, Polkas, Overtures and Marches of the Strauss Family (all with BRSO from 1949-52). Included here are The Blue Danube, Vienna Blood, Musical Joke, Pizzicato-Polka, Die Fledermaus, The Gypsy Baron, Voices of Spring, Roses from the South, Morning Papers, Annen-Polka, Chit-Chat Polka, and the Radzetky March.
Disc five focuses on Fricsay as an accompanist with pianist Margrit Weber (and the BRSO). Together they tackle Falla's Nights in the Garden of Spain (1957), Francaix's (1956) and Honegger's (1955) Concertos for Piano, Franck's Symphonic Variations (1957) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1960).
Disc six shines the spotlight on 20th Century composers. Here we get Von Einem's Zwischenspiel Interlude (1949), Hindemith's Symphonic Dances (1950), Hartmann's 6th Symphony (1955), and Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante (1950), with Gerty Herzog on piano, Sylvia Kidd on harpsichord and Irmgard Helmis on harp.
On discs seven and eight, Fricsay performs a memorable account of Haydn's The Seasons. This is a live recording with the Berlin RSO from 1961 featuring soprano Maria Stader, tenor Ernst Haefliger, bass Josef Greindl and the St. Hedwigs Cathedral Choir, Berlin.
The final disc, number nine, wraps things up with "Ferenc Fricsay: A Life Retold," a 57-miunte interview complete with excerpts of memorable performances.
Despite the fact that most of these recordings are in mono (only the selections on disc two, and the Paganini Rhapsody are in stereo), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music.

Great 1983 synthpop you may have never heard..........2007-02-03
Paul Haig's first solo release after his punk days with Josef K gets a jampacked release, including the entire EP remixed by Bruce Forest back in the day--although, most of the mixes are not as good as the original LP mixes. I also wish they had included Paul's first solo single "Running Away" as a bonus track.
Trading in guitars for synths and drum machines, this first solo album follows the synthpop formula to perfection, featuring female background vocals that reek of Human League, and upbeat synthpop gems in the style of Blancmange, as are the vocals. Here's a breakdown of the tracks:
"Heaven Sent" is definitely Human League meets New Order. So incredibly catchy. The bonus Bruce Forest mix is a little too house feeling, and takes away from the new wave synth sounds of the original.
"Never Give Up" is quite a slice of commercial synth pop, almost hokey, yet the vocal bridge/break is a fantastic new wave melody that doesn't go with the rest of the song. As hokey as the original is, the Bruce Forest mix strips away all the energy that gives the original mix its annoying charm.
"Adoration" is a melodic new wave masterpiece. Bass line reminds me of New Order. Great song.
"Stolen Love" is a great new wave synthdance track. The original mix is better than the only slightly longer Bruce Forest mix, which again, seems to strip the energy out of the song!
"Don't Rush in" is total Blancmange style synthpop.
"Blue For You" reminds me of the more pop dance tracks of the 80s, like Quando Quango and the Comateens. Lots of female background vocals. What is it with these Bruce Forest mixes? Again, it's kinda dull.
"In the World" is a cold and unemotional synthpop track. Not crazy about it.
"Justice" is upbeat synthpop perfection. So perfect it's almost annoying. And at last, I like one of the Bruce Forest mixes, which takes off the edge of happiness a bit and gives the song a little more attitude.
"Work Together" is a funkier synthpop sound, reminiscent of Heaven 17.
If you're looking to find some synthpop you may have missed back in the day, this is a good place to start, although, this album isn't quite as infectious as some huge 80s staples like Erasure, New Order, and Depeche Mode.

Customer Reviews:
Could have been a major player in the 1985 synthpop scene..........2007-02-03
Paul Haig left the world of punk behind, kept some light guitar, and filled it in with a whole lot of synthesizer and drum machines on his solo projects. His vocals offer that monotone, bored feel that was all the rage back then with new wave bands, from New Order to OMD. This 1985 offering is much more pop oriented in terms of the arrangements--the drum tracks are light and airy more often than the programmed, pulsing and dance-ready drum machine sound. Collaborators on this CD include members of New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, and A Certain Ratio, making this a hot commodity for collectors of all these new wave acts. Here's a breakdown of tracks:
The original album tracks:
"Silent Now" starts the CD off with melancholy orchestration and moody vocals in the style of Depeche Mode tracks like "A Question of Lust."
"Heaven Help You Now" is the epitomy of synthpop from the day, with electronic sequences swirling throughout.
"Love Eternal" is a classic synthpop ballad--think Fiction Factory's "Feels Like Heaven."
"This Dying Flame" opens with a New Order style pulsing bass line, and while the song is filled with great synth flourishes and great melody (sometimes over-the-top pop), it would have sounded fantastic with a dance mix for the clubs. The 12" version on Paul's "Then Again" CD reveals that it was not remixed for clubs, simply extended. Bummer.
"Sense of Fun" is serious synthpop perfection. This could have been a new wave classic in the US had it gotten airplay. And again, a club mix could have made this one a smash, because the beat just isn't danceable enough. One of the best songs on here.
"Scare Me" has more of a goth rock feel with a total New Order flavor thrown in for good measure.
"Big Blue World" takes a more upbeat, Blancmange direction. VERY commercial. It would have been great to have the 12" version as a bonus track.
"The Only Truth" is another great new wave synth track with a fantastic chorus, ripe for a club remix. Unfortunately, the 12" mix, which is on Paul's "Then Again" CD, doesn't remix it as a dance track, just extends it.
"One Lifetime Away" is another synthpop ballad. With its icy synths, it reminds me of something from a 1980s Giorgio Moroder movie soundtrack. The female vocals at the end are a little much.
"Love and War" is one of those clunky, almost experimental sounding arrangements, with a droning, dragging vocal--which even features some robotic effects.
The b-sides
"Ghost Rider" is not electronic at all--it's got a rockabilly/60s surfer music feel. Sorta Stray Cats, Sorta B-52s, sorta theme to the Munsters.
"Endless Song" keeps more in tone with the slower songs on the original album, but sounds a lot less electronic, and more goth rock.
"Shining Hour" starts off with a drum track that leaves you expecting Michael Jackson to start singing billiejean. But it quickly turns into a hot goth-synth pop track. Unexpected female background vocals during the chorus. This song reminds me more of Heaven 17.
"Trust" features more simple synth lines like earlier experimental synth music, with some acoustic guitar, but the vocal is all-out droning new wave.
"Dangerous Life" is airy synthpop with a Blancmange feel.
"Closer Now" is the most dance-ready song on here. The arrangement has more of a street beat feel. I could totally see guys in parachute pants popping and locking to this one.
"World Raw" is total experimental ambience. No sung vocals, just lots of choppy spoken voice samples.
If you thought you'd run out of synthpop new wave acts to discover, you've found a good candidate in Paul Haig. Also check out his "Rhythm of Life" CD, original recorded in 1983.

Ahead Of Its Time.......2004-05-22
The title says it all. This album sounds like it could have been released a couple years ago...Not 15 years!! God, I graduated high school when this came out... Its tough to pick a favorite BB song...Or even album. They are all great. Even the b sides to the singles, like "Boomin Granny", "Honky Rink" and "The Vibes". Cant wait for the new album dedicated to my home, NYC. Shout out to the Upper West Side of Manhattan! You can take the man out Manhattan, but you cant Manhattan out of the man...Philly's OK, but it'll never be home. Again, way ahead of its time.
In case.......2001-08-20
you've got the vanilla release and you're wondering about those extra two tracks on the import? They're just instrumental remixes of a couple of other tracks on the standard version. Don't worry about it; I reckon you aren't missing much here.
Excellent. That's all I have to say.......1999-10-14
Purchased this album when it was first produced and it stayed in my tape player constantly until the day it was stolen(always a sign of a good album). I have never replaced it but have never changed my opinion on this extremely good record. Buy it. Can't really say more than that!
Took off her pants, you know what I saw!.......1999-09-22
Totally funked out. All Beastie material is great but this one might be their crowning achievment. Impossible to make today because of the silly sampling laws, PB is a zany, drug induced journey through the lives and minds of three bad brothers you know so well. Produced by the DUST BROTHERS in 1989, this album is so far ahead of its time that the rest of the world still hasn't caught up yet. I have owned the album for a long time and I still catch a new lyric every now and again. The samples are endless and genious. Everything from Curtis Mayfield to the Beatles. Maybe the best party CD ever; just throw it in (drop a little science) and get this mother crunk. The final track on the CD is a combination of 10 cuts the boys came up with and lasts about fifteen minutes. Absolutely brilliant all the way around. I gotta bounce cause I'm long distace with my girl and Im talkin' on the cellular, she said that she was sorry and I said Yeah the hell you were! Peace, GET THE RECORD!
the bomb.......1999-02-07
