Erasure is at the top of the list of synth-pop groups who have transcended the genre's inherent limitations, and Other People's Songs demonstrates why they've stood the test of time. These are not remixes or samples; in fact, the arrangement apple never falls far from the tree. The selected pop tracks from the latter half of the 20th century are rendered through Vincent Clarke's effervescent sensibility and Andy Bell's emotive vocals. Most dance-club covers have a shelf life that barely outlasts the last call. But as on Abba-esque, their homage to Abba, Erasure meticulously nurture and revitalize rainbow-colored covers, this time making Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" and Buddy Holly's "Everyday" sweet but not bubblegum-flavored. Erasure has a stockpile of signature sounds, many of them used here to tie together disparate but instantly recognizable pop songs into Erasure songs. --Beth Massa

1 out of 5 stars erm..........2007-01-14

Erasure is the poor man's Depeche Mode. Funny since Vince started that band too...maybe he should've stuck around.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh!.......2005-12-20

Huge Erasure fan here... I was excited when this CD was released, especially after the abysmal "Loveboat." (Loveboat SHOULD have been good, with the addition of guitars and all but song choice was lacking.) Well, this didn't make up for that piss poor CD. I think "Solsbury Hill" kicks butt. awesome cover of an already great song. I think I like the album version of this song is best but the CD single is worth the $ because of the different mixes and a decent "B side."
Other than that, this CD sucks. Sorry, Vince and Andy. Love you guys and I appreciate trying new things but I've been craving your return to form.

4 out of 5 stars Dont worry it grows on you........2005-11-10

It took me 6 listens before I liked it. I absolutely love it. Its not the songs I would pick for them to cover but I still like it.

3 out of 5 stars Light, but melodic and, oh, so catchy........2005-01-04

This will not become your favorite Erasure album, unless it's the only one you own. However, there are some great songs on here, especially their versions of "Solsbury Hill," "Make Me Smile," and "Goodnight." The other stuff may be less enjoyable but it's still fun to sing along to in the car, especially if you know the original versions; however, I can see younger fans not liking a lot of the tunes here. So put the best songs in your iPod and you're all set.

5 out of 5 stars This is an AMAZING Cover Album.......2004-11-09

It beats 'ABBA-ESQUE', and that says a lot since that album was fantastic. Andy' vocals and Vince's music perfectly fit each song, they manage to stay true to the orginals while making them Erasure songs. I think this CD is proof that they haven't totally lost it, but they do need to work on it.

My favs are 'Ebb Tide' (really love), 'Solsbury Hill', 'Make Me Smile', 'Video Killed the Radio Star'. Fab!!!!!! I could live w/out 'Everybody's Got To Learn'. They took 'other people's songs' (excellent, well written songs) and made these really Erasure songs far as I am concerned. This is what Erasure used to be about! 'Listen to Pop Greatest Hits' and you'll know what I mean.

'Solsbury Hill' has foot tapping quick beat that you can definetly dance to or workout to. The vocals and music are wonderful on this track.

I can not even describe how awesone 'Ebb Tide' is. I can only imagine how slow the orginal song must be. But Erasure gave this version a beat that's as good as 'Solsbury Hill'. The very begining is slow, and then quickly picks up. Another smashing song by Vince and Andy. Same with 'Make Me Smile'

'Video Killed the Radio Star' is my general alltime fav song, and Erasure kept very true to the orginal that we all love, but added more upped the sound that the orginal used. Great.

'When Will I See You Again' and 'Walking In The Rain' are excellent, I can't see any faults here. These are excellent. Never Heard these songs before, and I like jazzy soul versions by Erasure.

The Buddy Holiday songs 'Everday' and 'True Love Always' are yes sappy (and I loathe sappy), but I think Erasure covers them really well. Its not quite as sappy. The music is excellent, and Andy's vocals are perfect. The music is 'pop' like, while sounding like a Holiday song. 'Ture Love Always' sounds like a ballad version with an extra kick. Vince and Andy did a fab job with this song.

I think the cover of 'You Can't Help Falling in Love' can't ever beat the UB40 version, but Erasure does a good job on their version of it. But a great beat makes the song a quicker. The orginal is so painfully slow. I don't think anyone could top the UB40 version, so don't judge Erasure too harshly on this one. They simply did this song the Erasure way.

Their cover of 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling' is much better then I would have thought was possible, as I really dislike the orginal version. I can't even watch this song in 'Top Gun', fast forward. But Erasure's version redeems this song in my eyes. It sounds so much better when Erasure covers it (much less sappy sugar mush). Kind of quick ballad like, weird analogy I know. Forget the Righteous Brother's version.

I just bought this CD yesterday, and I adore it. I don't know where the negative reviews are comig from (IMO). I am a huge Erasure fan, and I think this is the best CD they have released in quite sometime. This is millions times better then their Loveboat, so look beyond that one. To bad they haven't released an orgainal Erasure CD this good is some time.

This is the first Erasure CD where I can't really find any clunkers, they mixed this CD well. Too bad the songs aren't their's though. This a return to their 'Chours' CD, which all I can say is its about stinkin' time! Vince and Andy did an excellent job with this one, lets see what they do next. Hopefully the're back to the old days, and can do some great orginal Erasure songs.

Instead of going round and round and round trying to narrow a meandering genre for Circle Game: Folk Music for Kids, Music for Little People limited its songwriting players to a certain era. So break out your bandana and loosen up about letting the kids wear tie-dye, because a hippy-happier mood is hard to find these days. It's not that the 13 songs collected here serve only to spread good vibes--"You've Got a Friend" does more to remind us how we'd feel without one, and "Puff the Magic Dragon" could knock the wind out of even the most freewheeling spirits--but the boys and girls enlisted to perform these tracks clearly were feelin' groovy come recording time. "If I Had a Hammer (the Hammer Song)" and "If You Want to Sing Out," both led by what sounds like a mighty and stuffy-nosed 6-year-old, carry the lyrical capacity to temporarily ease 21st-century strife, real or imagined. So do "Happiness Runs" and "Moon Shadow," which even when delivered by crooners too young to wax philosophical can't help but impart a near-mystical hopefulness. "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Both Sides Now," and "The Circle Game" pull a similar sleight of hand, sparking a winding, shifting sort of introspection. For a finale, "59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" couldn't be more fitting. Spin this disc and count on not only raising just-aroused consciences, but also on kick-starting a renewed karmic wave of harmony and lyrical insight. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars fabulous.......2002-10-24

I think this CD is fabulous. It has a whole lot of songs from my younger days, sung by children. I play this in the car and both the kids and I enjoy it. I am asked over and over to play it. Recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Folk.......2001-12-07

Really nice CD. My son & I enjoy it together - it's fun to share these classic songs with him and he enjoys the kids voices very much.

1 out of 5 stars Chipmunk Folk.......2001-11-19

I bought this CD specifically to help me sing folk songs to my newborn -- I didn't anticipate the songs to be sung by children in such high voices and at speeded up tempos! It's nothing I can sing along to, let alone barely listen to. Maybe small children would enjoy it but adults would probably find it as irritating as I do!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18

"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!

5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......2002-10-17

This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

5 out of 5 stars We Love Lunch Money!!.......2006-09-12

We've been lucky enough to see Lunch Money play locally several times, and they are just awesome! I could (and do) listen to this CD over and over with my kids and actually ENJOY it (can't say that about many kids' CDs).

I'm thrilled to see Lunch Money getting some national attention; they are a really talented group!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2006-08-22

This CD is great. The group Lunch Money is definitely on it's way up. I have seen them in person at a small branch library near where I live. The group is just as personable and approachable as the songs are. Kids just can't seem to get enough of the music. My nephews and neice listened to the songs so much, they know all the words by heart. their favorite is the Roller Coaster song. Give it a try, and I know that neither you nor your kids will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Sowing the seeds for tomorrows indie rockers.......2006-06-04

I haven't seen them live (yet), but each track conjurs up images of throngs of children reciting hand motions, and parents who can't help but join in. The energy isn't from over-stimulating sugar coated Barney-pop, but rather the raw delivery that supplies a platform for honest poetic lyricism (hence the Indie-rock allusion). The lyrics cut straigh to the things that really matter: cabooses, bugs, tricycles, and dogs (or the lack thereof).

This music kneels down to address children at eye-level, but somehow manages not to stoop.

My two year old son and I love this cd. It was recommended to us by my musician brother who has two daughters (4 and 2) who love it too. It sounds light and sprightly and we never get sick of it. Funny, sweet lyrics, a happy mood, and not over produced.

I like very much Placido Domingo, and the album is good, however not as good as I expected. I felt some enthusiasm is missing.

        3 out of 5 stars Mixed Work.......2002-12-22

Of the great living tenors, Placido Domingo commands the most respect among musicians for his voice, musicality, breadth of repertoire, and professionalism. The CD purchasing public, however are more excited by Andrea Bocelli and Luigi Pavarotti. Sacred Songs is an attempt to win over some of their market share.

16 songs are contained on the disc that would admittedly be better but less alliteratively titled Inspirational Songs; Richard Rogers's Climb Every Mountain, one of the highlights, is hardly church music. Along with a healthy supply of beautifully sung classics by Franck, Gounod and the like are a handful of curiosities. The inclusion of an Ave Maria by Domingo's middle son Placido Domingo Jr, with Luisa Domingo on harp is an enjoyable bit of musical nepotism. Schubert's well-known Lullaby is merged with his ballet music from Rosemunde and the whole given a new text and backing by women's choir; likewise Mascagani's instrumental Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana becomes a duet between Domingo and the pop soprano Sissel. Domingo's sheer musicality saves the former, but the latter is less fortunate, as Sissel's thin singing and pious recitation spoil an otherwise gorgeous composition. (Admittedly, Sissel fares much better in her second duet on the CD.) Also somewhat aesthetically questionable is Paolo Rustichelli's Kyrie, with the composer accompanying on piano, guitar, and synthesizers. The real low point on the disc occurs in Gounod's Sanctus, where a lovely climax is destroyed by the sloppy ensemble of the Coro Sinfonicao di Milano Giuseppe Verdi.

Whether Sacred Songs will convert the unbelievers is questionable, and it may even alienate some of Domingo's more dogmatic followers with its hint of crossover.

Curiously, the previous reviewer mentions the inclusion of Schubert's Ave Maria, which Domingo sung for the victims of the September 11 attack. This is actually NOT included in my CD, nor is it mentioned in the amazon.com list above; the CD notes do refer to Domingo's performance of the work, but the only Ave Maria's on the disc are by Mascagani, Gounod, and Domingo's son.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo for "Sacred Songs" by Placido Domingo.......2002-12-17

Placido Domingo presents a beautiful new collection of sacred songs which includes old favorites like "Panis Angelicus" by Cesar Franck, and wonderful new additions like the melodious "Ave Maria" composed by his son, Placido Domingo, Jr., featuring Luisa Domingo on the harp. The recording, from the Auditorium Milano in Milano in February, 2002, is clear and vibrant. Program notes by Harvey Sachs are outstanding and indicate that the songs included cover a period of 300 years. They are sung easily by Mr. Domingo in six languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Latin. Sensitive and moving orchestral accompaniment is under the direction of conductor Marcello Viotti, who says, "Musicians must communicate everything they have in their souls, and what makes Placido so special is his very, very rich soul: he gives so much, gives of his fullness." My favorite compositions on the recording are the robust "Domine Deus" by Rossini, and the humble "Repentir" by Gounod, which drives you to your knees. Full text of all the songs with English translation is presented, along with color pictures of Mr. Domingo at work on the two duets with his collaborating Norwegian soprano, Sissel. Also included is the inspiring "Ave Maria" by Schubert, sung by Mr. Domingo at the New York memorial service for the September 11 disaster victims. The songs are summarized best by Mr. Domingo: "Over the years, sacred music has always been close to me...every piece of music we hear [on the recording] is a miracle, therefore sacred." I recently heard Mr. Domingo in person at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (singing the lead in Mozart's "Idomeneo"), and can assure you this "world's greatest tenor" is still in wonderful and wondrous form. The new "Sacred Songs" is a must for those who love classical sacred music, a recording which to me makes the soul soar.
