Harding's always had trouble squeezing out sparks in the studio, so it's easy to wonder what all the infernal fuss over the guy is about until you hear his charisma explode on a good live recording. Awake is better than a lot of his studio albums in that respect (better than New Deal, for instance) but it's still a pretty polite effort for a guy who fancies himself an outlaw folkie. Maybe pass on this one for now, but definitely hear "When the Beatles Hit America" on the Mountain Stage Vol. 2 compilation. Be astonished, and proceed from there. --Gavin McNett

Great music!.......2007-07-16
I just love Josh Groban's music. Each time he comes out with a new cd, I can't imagine how it could be better than the previous one. But I have to say, this is the best one yet. I just never tire listening to this cd. And I probably won't until his next one comes out. Even my 10 year old son loves this CD!
A total disappointment.......2007-07-04
I loved Josh Groban's first two studio albums. I thought the music was both spiritually uplifting and emotionally moving. Josh's third studio album "Awake" was a total let down for me. No matter how many times I have listened to "Awake", I found the album nothing like its predecssors. The songs lacked the beauty and charm that made me fall in love with Josh's music several years ago. The songs were totally devoid of a good pop melody. The material was weak and less than spectacular. I think the worst song on the album has to be "Machine". Bombastic and no melody. There was only one song on the album that really stood out with me and it was Josh's cover of Qkumba Zoo's ballad "Weeping", a collaboration he did with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Vusi Mahlasela. Other than that song, every other song on the album was flat and lifeless and lacked the beauty of his first two albums. Maybe it is my evolving taste in music that has changed my outlook on Josh's music but then again I still love his self-titled cd and "Closer". What a disappointment "Awake" turned out to be.

I'll admit, when I first heard this CD, I wasn't immediately sure what to make of it, but upon repeated listenings, I began to love it. Josh was asserting himself: he was taking chances and testing new areas. Quite frankly, with a voice like his, he can't go wrong. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert this past March at Madison Square Garden, and while I was a wee bit disappointed that he didn't do a few more of the "older" songs, he did do practically the entire "Awake" album, and let me tell you, the man sounds exactly the same in person as he does on CD and he made converts out of the people around me who were still on the fence about the album. And when Ladysmith Black Mambazo came out to do "Lullaby" and "Weeping," the roof was practically blasted off the place! There are many entertainers who don't quite sound live like they do on their recordings (Madonna comes to mind), but Josh is not one of them. This album is certainly a departure from his first two, but I think he was right to take the chance. He proved he can sing anything. My favorites off the album are "In Her Eyes" (one of the best things he's ever done), "Mai," "Weeping," and "You Are Loved." This album is fresh and interesting. Besides, it's Josh. He could sing the phone book and have you begging for more, right?

I bought this CD after hearing some clips on Amazon and, as a Josh Groban fan, thought it sounded good. When I got it, I popped it into my computer and listened while working. I was thoroughly enjoying it but when it got to Un Giorno Per Noi, I was enthralled! I had to stop what I was doing as I was fully immersed in the joy of the musical experience brought to me by Josh Groban's rendition of the Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet. This song alone is reason for 5 stars but the rest of the CD also lives up to the excellence we have come to expect from a performer of the caliber of Josh Groban. I highly recommend this CD!

Conor Oberst is running on dangerous ground: getting his first Dylan comparisons at age 12, frolicking with Winona Ryder, releasing two separate albums at once. Didn't he learn anything from Ryan Adams's mistakes? It's a good thing he can write such haunting, intimate songs. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (released simultaneously with Digital Ash in a Digital Urn) is the album the Omaha native has always threatened to make, channeling his country rock influences into articulate, witty ballads that come to life with gorgeous harmonies supplied by Emmylou Harris. quirky, and perfect.
there isn't a track i don't like
crass, a bit bitter, a little drunk.... this album captures the soul of a young man like no other record i have ever heard. this is his document of what it means to move into lower manhattan. this is how it is for him. this is how he sees the world: he questions, he listens, and he looks. (it is called literature)
i am not yet tired of this record, it is full-bodied. it is honest. it is part of my own story as well, only with better background music.

This album is a feat for Oberst - an excellent folk album that everyone can relate to, sing along to, listen to, and love. If you like folk, slow music, Conor Oberst, indie, or life, you've got to listen to this album.
From claustrophobic storytellers ("At the Bottom of Everything") to sad, sweet folkies ("Lua") to simply happy tunes ("First Day of My Life") to joyful/miserable I-love-and-hate-life songs ("Road To Joy"), this CD has something for everyone that's ever felt ecstatic, down, confused, bitter, torn, smitten, terrified, or alive. Bottom line: it's got everything.
Heartfelt, incredible, rich in emotion, and downright brilliant - I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is Oberst's best work to date. If anything of his that comes out surpasses this amazing album, I will die, come back to life, and buy it.
Let's just say that this would be one of the albums that I'd choose if I ever had to answer that stupid "If you were on a desert island and could bring only five CDs, what would you bring?" question.

This is easily one of the best new-folk albums of the last decade. Loaded with imagistic lyrics and social commentary, Conor Oberst shows why those "New Dylan" tags have been lobbed at him by critics probably old enough to be his grandpa. There are plenty of story-songs here, from the spoken word introduction to "At The Bottom Of Everything" to the stunning current event lyric, "we made loveon the living room floor with the noise in the background to a televised war." In an age where protest songs are few and far between (and seem to only come from elder statesmen like Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen or Steve Earle), it's refreshing to hear someone sing about something other than bling and beyatches.
I would probably not be so quick with the Dylan comparisons. I'd probably be more apt to call Oberst kin to Gram Parsons or Jackson Browne, where confessional lyricism was more the point of the song. I also take issue with the emo tag connected to Bright Eyes albums by underage metalheads without the maturity to make the distinction. This is folk music in the seventies sense, maybe a bit more stripped down but still a close cousin to "Late For The Sky" or James Taylor's "Mud Slide Slim." "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" belongs on the same pantheon as those albums, even with the age difference.
I've also been lucky enough to see Oberst play (in a song circle with Jim James - wow - and M.Ward -eh) at the 2005 Newport Folk Festival. Far from a gallery of screaming teenaged girls that some of the more virulent negative reviews would lead you to think are his core audience, Oberst captivated a huge ADULT crowd of concert goers. The songs from "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" resonated with this crowd with the same rapport the audience shared with other acts that weekend, including such stalwarts as Arlo Guthrie and Nanci Griffith. They are the kind of company young Conor is peer to. Although this CD came out in 2005, it still gets strong rotation in my stereo.

What more can I say that the other reviewers have not...if all the songs are new and their are no covers of other people's songs?,(as I don't like when artist do this, anyone can do that)...then this is an outstanding album....in that style of music.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE!!.......2007-05-03
I heard the title track "Dreaming Wide Awake" on a local university FM station a few weeks ago, immediately ordered the CD, along with Ms Wright's first CD, "Salt", and have been listening to both of them constantly since receiving them. I play them together in a "random" mode on my player which allow the subtle differences of the two CDs to blend together to make a tremendous listening experience.
It would be difficult for me to pick a favorite song because there are several songs that I love and there are several types of songs to chose from. A truly fascinating collection of music with something for just about everyone and each song given her personal style. Both are truly remarkable albums that are musically adroit and lyrically captivating.
Please, don't miss these musical treasures, that will stand the test of time. I'll be playing these CDs for a long time. Truly remarkable musicianship by Ms Wright.

I am very impressed with this release. This artist is new to me so I had no preconceived ideas of what to expect. Her voice is very smooth, womanly strong. She brings me back to the days of my youth when I was hearing more black women sing of more than the blues, songs of inspiration and happiness, black women voices were heard in a more positive way.
I really enjoy listening to this CD.

When I heard this cd the first time, I was in a true place of intoxication and ectasy all at once. I am definitely feeling her voice it's so rich, smooth and sultry! I can't say enough about this album!

Unexpectedly good CD!.......2007-05-03
I reviewed this CD for my school newspaper, and was pleasantly surprised! I originally thought it would be just another trendy emo band, but was amazed when I read that it was just one man and his acoustic guitar. I'd normally be bored with just acoustic music, but his songs are really melodic and catchy. My one complaint is that a lot of the songs sound the same. If he adds a bit more variety to his music, I can see him being a huge hit!

This acoustic album is loved by almost everyone who listens to these songs of love, deception and desire. They are sweet and meaningful, which I find intriguing and addicting. I know the words to every song. Even people who like other kinds of music will love and appreciate Secondhand Serenade.
Songs like Awake, Broken, Your Call, and Vulnerable all connect to people's inner feelings and make them think of their own love life and loved ones. Even the names of the songs relate to the human emotions we use to describe our feelings. The soothing music in only adds to the appeal of this album.

I purchased this disc for my sons birthday. He knew it had been released, but we were unable to find it locally. He was thrilled and very surprised to receive it!
One of my favorite albums!.......2007-03-04
I found Secondhand Serenade on MySpace, where I have recently found great artists who are not in the mainstream (Joshua Radin & William Fitzsimmons). I technically do not have this version of "Awake" (the version I bought on MySpace does not have a few of these songs, but it is still the same versions of the other songs). With that said, these songs are great. I love the songs "Maybe," "Half Alive," "Vulnerable," and "Broken." Secondhand Serenade is similar to early Dashboard Confessional, but not as bitter sounding. He has excellent vocal range and harmony ability, better than Dashboard actually. And I think with experience, he will be able to write songs as good as Dashboard (this debut is better than DC's first - not as good as Dashboard's second, but few albums are). This still feels like a fresh, unique album, though, and is worth every penny. If you love acoustic music that is passionate and makes you want to sing along, then go buy this now!

The music is to the ear well done but it does not move me therefore it bored me. This man has a beautiful voice but the collection lacked pizzazz so I was disappointed.
Josh Groban's daring awakening to new rhythms.......2007-04-12
I bought this cd with accompanying dvd (the making of Awake) for my 8yr and 5yr old daughters who have started a collection of Josh Groban cds and dvds. They really enjoy classical and opera, and have locked on to his music. My husband and I have grown to like Josh's music through our daughters. Although we had already bought the cd, we decided to buy this product with the accompanying dvd on the making of the album. It was well worthwhile. The folder contains the cd, song booklet, and dvd which is very enlightening and allowed us to see a side of Josh Groban that we have not yet seen before. One of the things I find disappointing in all the cds we have bought so far is that there are no accompanying english translations in the song booklets - this one does not have it either. While we have learnt a lot of Italian, Spanish and French songs from Josh's cds, it would be nice to know what we are singing - so if an english translation were side by side with the foreign one, it would be nice.
My daughters enjoyed seeing the backgroud story on the dvd and were quite touched to see him both working and playing - especially coloring with a little girl and his sense of humor. The main thing we like about it is that it is clean entertainment that our whole family can enjoy together. I was a little taken aback at one point to see that he uttered what seemed to be an expletive but it was "beeped" out, thankfully, and my daughters were none the wiser. I hope that he doesn't allow that to happen on any of his future projects. The songs are wonderful, his singing range really comes out on this album, and the variety of music is refreshing. A daring but successful dive into other rhythms - African. It is a nice addition to our collection!

I wasnt sure if 'Awake' could possibly top 'Closer', but I was very wrong! 'Awake' is perhaps Josh's best album to date. 'Dont Give Up' is the stand out track. 'February Song' and 'When She Dances' are sure to be fan favorites. Dont hasitate and buy this CD!!!

It is not possible to fit 36 Bach masterpieces on two CDs, so what Essential Bach does is present individual movements from across a range of the composer's work. The anthology is clearly aimed at the newcomer, and the absence of booklet notes to put the music in context is disappointing. We are only given titles, performers, and what films the extracts have been featured in, from Rollerball to The English Patient.
On the plus side, most if not all of the music is instantly recognizable, by melody if not by name. Everything from the Brandenburg Concertos to "Air on a G String" to the B Minor Mass and St. Matthew Passion is represented. Performances range from 1960 to 1993, encompassing both early instrument and modern orchestra interpretations by a wide variety of forces, including Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and Raymond Leppard leading the English Chamber Orchestra. Given such diversity the result is unavoidably a patchwork, albeit one made from the finest materials, and as such is perhaps best treated as a sampler to aid exploration of the vast legacy of one of the very greatest composers who ever lived. --Gary S. LOVE LOVE LOVE this 2-CD set. I bought I a awhile back and have enjoyed it very much. My toddler likes it too. I think it's a great value for the money and may have to get another copy if this one wears out.
Exquisite Essential Bach.......2005-02-01
Value and exquisite sampler of Bach on two CD's at an affordable price. Recorded by the likes primarily of Academy of the St. Martin-in-the-fields, Chicago Sympony, Boston Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra and with virtuoso performers as William Bennett, Heinz Hollinger, Pepe Romero, and Wolfgang Rubsam, one gets treated to wonderful Bach exerpts of all his fantastic breath and depth of chamber, symphony and choral works.
One will have to go to other places to find background on these marvelous compositions as the liner notes only list perfomer and date recorded.

The CD compilation includes, "We Deal in Dreams," a previously-unreleased track from LIVE's 1994 Throwing Copper sessions. The CD also includes a spirited cover of the Johnny Cash classic, "I Walk The Line."

THE BAND: Ed Kowalczyk (vocals, guitar), Chad Taylor (lead guitar), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass), Chad Gracey (drums & percussion). Hometown: York, PA.
THE DISC: (2004) 19 tracks clocking in at approximately 77 minutes. Included with the disc is a 7-page foldout containing song titles/credits (no lyrics), band photos, what songs came from which albums, a quick paragraph on each album from Kowalczyk, and thank you's. This compilation follows the band from their 1991 debut through "Birds Of Pray" in 2003. There is an additional 2-disc release (the CD with music, and a DVD with interview and videos) also available. Label - Radioactive Records.
ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Mental Jewelry (3 songs), Throwing Copper (5), Secret Samadhi (2), The Distance To Here (3), V (2), Birds Of Pray (2), Unreleased (2).
COMMENTS: Outside of "Throwing Copper" (1994), this "Best Of" compilation might be all the Live you need. It absolutely hits on all the highlights of each album. Tracks 1-3 find the band in raw form from "Mental Jewelry"... singing and playing like they had something to prove. "Operation Spirit" and "Pain Lies On The Riverside" were the standout songs and worthy of inclusion here. Tracks 4-8 are from "Throwing Copper" - easily their biggest and most recognized tunes. "Copper" had so many great songs - and Kowalczyk never sang with such conviction. The melodies were most importantly... memorable. And then Kowalczyk shaved his head and went Zen on everyone. For me, "Secret Samadhi" (1997) was the start of the decline for Live. "Lakini's Juice" was my favorite track from this one because of the weird guitar chords. "Turn My Head" was the other good tune from "Samadhi", but the rest of the album was a mixed bag at best. Kowalczyk singing about spirit, his Holiness, angel wings, birds and dolphins crying in the near future was losing audiences. Not to mention the music just not being that strong - outside of a few tracks on each album - all of which are here on "Awake - Best Of Live". The Distance To Here" made some waves but quickly lost steam and fell from the charts. Their fifth album "V" (labeled as "experimental") was trashed by most major music mags. "Birds Of Pray" was a semi return to form, but once again garnered mixed reviews and almost no FM-airplay. The unreleased "We Deal With Dreams" was an extra song from the "Throwing Copper" sessions and is a nice inclusion here. Live's remake of Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line" is nothing out of the ordinary, but still respectable. Missing are a few personal favorites (but by no means essential) - "Iris", "Top", "White, Discussion", "Ghost", "Voodoo Lady", and "Graze". This is a fantastic disc because it has the band's best songs over their 1st dozen years ALL in one place. Despite Live's 2nd half fall from the charts, this is a stellar introduction to the band (5 stars).

Of all the hundreds of CD's I own, this is my absolute favorite. I love the passion of "Selling the Drama" and "Pillar of Davidson". This CD hasn't been out of my CD player since I bought it. Just brilliant!
Is this album really necessary?.......2006-09-09
These guys are the biggest joke in rock music. All of these 5 star reviews are an even bigger joke. Ed Kowizsychik(SP) or however you want to spell it sounds as pathetic as he looks. This is garbage, plain & simple. Im glad radio is no longer saturated with their music. 20 years from now, no one will remember this group.

Some rock & roll purists consider the term "progressive rock" an oxymoron. After all, rock & roll is supposed to be about feeling, not thinking. Prog rock bands miss the point by taking the soul out of a musical form that's purposely crass and anti-intellectual. All the precise, long-winded arrangements, keyboard flourishes, wailing vocals, and overorchestration of groups like Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and, to a degree, Rush suck the soul out of something that should be less head and more body. Dream Theater, though they possess many of the same characteristics as these bands, still manage to maintain a human element in their music. Awake is at times self-indulgent and pompous, but songs like "Lie," a passionate crusher that finds guitarist John Petrucci launching riff after thunderous riff in a cacophonous volley of crunch, ring true with real passion and base emotion. It's the depth and tonality his guitar brings to the music that keeps Dream Theater from falling into the Styx-isms they often veer dangerously close to. A very solid record for those who don't mind thinking while rocking. --Adem Tepedelen

How do you follow up Images and Words?.......2007-07-07
For the life of me, I can't figure out why I don't absolutely love this album. Dream Theater is my favorite band and I loved the albums released before and after this one, but for whatever reason Awake just never resonated with me. It may be that I hold its predecessor - Images and Words - in such high esteem that nothing else could possibly measure up. That album totally changed the way I listen to music, so how could anything else possibly compare? Still, I realize that Awake is actually a pretty terrific album in its own right. If nothing else, you have to give the band credit for releasing a progressive metal album at a time when grunge was the dominant style.
In some ways, Awake comes across as a darker counterpart to Images and Words. Maybe I'm reading too much into things, but I can imagine the mirror overlooking the bleak landscape on the cover is actually hanging in the room pictured on the Images cover. The songs just seem darker and more atmospheric here, lacking the majesty and grandeur of a Metropolis or Learning to Live. It's the same style of music, but with a darker lyrical touch, as evidenced by songs like 6:00, Caught in a Web, Innocence Faded, Lie, and even the ballad The Silent Man. It's not all gloomy though. The instrumental Erotomania is pure prog rock bliss, Scarred could have been an Images b-side, and Lifting Shadows off a Dream is simply a beautiful song.
I wonder how much of Awake's darker nature comes from keyboardist Kevin Moore. He left the band after this album, and its follow-up - A Change of Seasons - was a return to the Images and Words style, though obviously on a grander scale. Moore's fingerprints are all over this album, and never more so than the brooding (and brilliant) closing song Space Dye Vest. This haunting track is full of the samples and keyboard effects that would feature prominently in Moore's later work, and is my absolute favorite song on Awake.
I know a lot of people consider Awake to be the band's greatest work, and I can understand that. As much as I enjoy it though, it will always the "the one after Images and Words", and that may just be too tough an act to follow.

Really amazing musicians, energic and powerful musical execution.
Great guitar player, incredible rythm section, a great signer, top class keyboard player, what else could you ask ? Incredible band and another jaw dropping album. Highly recommanded.
Prog that's full of Passion.......2007-06-19
Dream Theater's latest three albums (Systematic Chaos, Octavarium, and Train of Thought), though all solid albums by lesser standards than what the band must live up to, had left me a little bit forgetful as to why I considered Dream Theater my favorite band for such a long period of my adolescent life. So I turned back to the albums which started it all- Awake. And though it has been years since I bought the album, and probably at least one year since I gave it a good listen, the album's magic has not worn off at all. With "Awake" Dream Theater created an album that was so undeniably cool! Heavy enough to be considered Metal, and Progressive to the bone, but lacking almost all the cheesy characteristic that turn most music fans away from those genres. As I listen through Dream Theater's discography once again, I am forced to admit that "Awake" was probably the best moment for each member of the band (at that time), both lyrically and musically.
John Petrucci sounds better on this album than any other. His guitar sounds are crunchier on here than on previous efforts, and the Ibanez he used in these days sounds much better than that Ernie Ball set-up he uses now. He doesn't try to impress with Steve Vai-esque solos in every song, and he doesn't need to. The solos in "Scarred" and "Erotomania" should be enough to convince any listener of his talents. Lyrically, this album includes his best work- "A Mind Beside Itself".
Surprisingly enough, James LaBrie is also a Most Valuable Player on this disc. For the first, and last, time ever in Dream Theater history, his vocals are raw and emotional. He screams the lines that need to be screamed, and when a gentler tone is necessary he delivers it flawlessly. LaBrie is not a bad singer at all, though his voice is often the object of complaint by Dream Theater fans. I think that this is because the rest of the band does not give him room to be himself on the albums, but I will say this- there are few singers that can deliver with the quality of emotion and uniqueness as LaBrie.
Finally, this album is Kevin Moore's good-bye album. He was, without a doubt, Dream Theater's most tasteful keyboard player. When he left, the band lost quite a big chunk of it's character. But the band also lost the person who was probably it's greatest lyricist. Moore shines on Awake, both lyrically and musically, more so than on any album he has participated in in the past of future.
Awake was a special moment for not only Dream Theater but all of Progressive Music. Dream Theater brought dark, depth, and passion to a genre that is often criticized for lacking it, and since Awake this kind of magic has only reincarnated itself in bands like Pain of Salvation and Opeth. Dream Theater will never make an album like Awake again. Truly, Awake is their masterpiece.
Lifting shadows of a good dream!.......2007-06-09
Dream Theater have always managed to create something new and different for each new album, but still maintaining something some of their basic characteristics. Awake is the Dream Theater summer record for me; a fresh sounding, yet heavy progressive metal record with a very melodic approach. The influences from the progressive metal gods Rush are clearly shining through more than ever but Dream Theater put them on a new and fresh level and develops the genre with their song writing abilities and highly developed musical technique. Definitely one of the band's fresh sounding releases and certainly their most melodic until today; a perfect ending for keyboardist Kevin Moore.
A worthy follow up to I&W.......2007-06-09
If you're new to Dream Theater, I don't really suggest you start out with this album, because, a lot of it is an acquired taste, much like Guinness Beer... Some parts are bitter and self-indulgent (*ahem* LaBrie *ahem*). But let's not pretend that this album isn't great, because it is great, and deserves that praise, but there are obvious weaknesses, but, I'll get into that with the song-by-song...
6:00 ... Starts out with some cool drumming from Portnoy, and a background vocal repeatedly saying "six o'clock on a Christmas morning", which if I was to indulge into my own assumptions, is about Kevin Moore's disgust with being away from his family, and his ambivalence towards leaving Dream Theater, of which we know the result of. Anyways, LaBrie's vocals seem a bit less polished this time around, with a more raw, scream to them, which I'm not huge on, but, it's an OK opener to the album.
Caught in a Web ... Other than a really good instrumental section, the rest of the song is boring to me, and even after listening to this CD hundreds of times, I still can't fully get into this song. Although to be positive, this is one of the few tracks where I actually like LaBrie's vocals. All-in-all, tolerable, but not all that great
Innocence Faded ... This is probably the first song I truly loved on this album. LaBrie's incredibly self-indulgent vocals do drag it down a bit, particularly in the 2nd verse, to where he's nearly impossible to decipher. The instrumental in the last 1:45 of the song is quite legendary in my opinion though so, there you go.
Erotomania ... Great instrumental, and definitely one of the strongest points of the album. Great keyboarding by Kevin Moore throughout, and great guitar work by John Petrucci.
Voices ... The second part of "A Mind Beside Itself". It's an excellent song, despite LaBrie's vocal vomiting in parts of it. The instrumental/solo is tasty, and the lyrics are mind-boggling cryptic, shrouded in religious jargon, but, all-in-all excellently written in all aspects.
The Silent Man ... Straight up acoustic number, and a decent end to the three-parter. Good enough for what it is, I suppose.
The Mirror ... This is where it starts to lose some of its grip for me, not that I don't like Petrucci's crushing riffs. This is kind of Portnoy's debut into being part of DT's lyricist family, and I already didn't particularly like his stylings. Not my first choice to listen to when I think of Dream Theater, but, alright, I'll take it
Lie ... A decent song. Nothing special about it really, although I love the flow of the vocals in the verses.
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream ... It's ethereal and majestic enough to make it a great ballad from John Myung.
Scarred ... Hands down, the best song on the CD. It starts out almost like a jazz song, and segues into one of the best Petrucci solos. Awesomeness in all eleven minutes of it.
Space Dye Vest ... And how fitting they follow the best song of the CD with their best ballad to date. The whole lyric is just incredible, and to think, it's simply about turning the page in a magazine... A wonderful end of Awake, and the Kevin Moore-era of DT.

Godsmack play their ghoulish hard rock with such a straight face, they make Metallica look like the Insane Clown Posse. For proof, look no further than heavily pierced frontman Sully Erna, who is not only a practicing Wiccan but the author of melodramatic declarations such as "Can't you see what this pain has fucking done to me." It's too bad the follow-up to the Boston band's triple-platinum self-titled debut rarely delivers with the desired intensity. Instead, the disc offers anodyne takes on the same old themes of aggression ("Sick of Life"), alienation ("Bad Magick"), and hocus-pocus ("Vampires"), with the all-too-familiar buzzsaw of nu-metal guitars and elastic bass grooves tearing throughout. --Aidin Vaziri

Awake to Hate.......2007-05-16
Godsmack has not made many albums compared to other artist, like Nine Inch Nails or Rob Zombie, but I really think thats what makes almost all of their albums interesting and fun. This is my personal favorite. The song Sick of Life is something I can really relate to and describes how I feel most of the time. Awake is a song I really would'nt listen to unless I'm in a really good mood. Greed is song that has lyrics that are powerful, but somewhat slow. Bad Magick and Goin down are not songs on the album I listen to often, but they are sort of catchy. Mistakes is another song I like and can listen to frequently. Trippin' is very similar to Mistakes, except that the intro is not as powerful and the vocals are more heavier. The other songs I have not heard because I don't have the CD, but instead an Mp3, but I'm sure there somewhat decent.

This is still one of my faviorte cds. I enjoy the title track but I like Sick of Life more. Its probably one of there last great cds as the other two cds havent been great. Although I stand alone is a faviorte track of mine.

I think the only thing that could have made this album 6 stars is Shannon Larkin. I actually think this album is much better than their first, oh who am I kidding out of all 5 (the other side an LP, also good but I am waiting for a Percussively solid lineup with Sully and Shannon) of their studio releases this is it. Don't get me wrong, the first is good... But I think Awake closes a chapter and Faceless opened up their modern sound... and IV is eh, well... trying to be diverse. I recommend this album of them all.

Not only do I have this sudden urge to join the navy but after listening to Godsmack I feel like going back to old school Metallica from 1983-89. I don't understand the whole Alice in Chains rip off thing first off Sully doesn't sound ANYTHING like Layne Stayle if anything he reminds me of James Hetfield. The only thing as close to AIC as they get is there name Godsmack taken from 92's Dirt album and the sun logo thing, I'm just surprised they haven't gotton sued for [...]. There obviously huge influences on Metallica + AIC but whats wrong with that the only problem I have with Godsmack is alot of there songs sound the same. I loved this album when it came out 6 years ago but as time grew on this album hasn't really done anything for me in the past couple of years, I recomend it if you like old Godsmack over the new but they have done better than this album and thats why I give it 4 stars. If anything go pick up there self-titled thats way more interesting than anything they have put out in the past couple of years.
AIC rip offs?.......2006-05-27
I'd like to know how a band goes about imitating another band even though they don't sound alike and have different types of songs. In my opinion godsmack and alice in chains sound nothing alike. True, godsmack is an AIC song title and true, they used a similar sun logo but it's all about the music here. Godsmack makes good music as did aic and believe me i am a huge fan of alice in chains and i can't wait for them to tour with william duvall. But, come on, these bands are totally different from each other. as for this album, probably their weakest effort but still quite good.

GOOD rock cd........2007-07-18
A little heavier, and all around a little more even. I'm liking this cd alot more than the last two. Never really been a big fan but this album makes me reconsider. Best song is without a doubt Awake but there's lots of winners on here.
By Far SDS's best effort!.......2007-07-07
I had heard SDS's first two releases and thought that they were good, heart pumping rock. But I was not ready for this CD. With new producer, Paul Ebersold (Third Day- Wire) onboard, SDS has released a far superior effort to their first two CDs (and I liked those). The sound is bigger, the drums hit louder, and the guitars are fuller. The overall sound of the CD is simalar to Nickleback, but heavier. My one complaint is that most of the really good songs are at the beginning, but the whole CD is very listenable. Having seen these guys live, I am really impressed with their ministry. They are one of the few bands that don't put out that "Rock star" vibe. All in all, a very good hard rock CD. It stands up well against their mainstream counterparts.
Excellent CD!.......2007-06-22
Seventh Day Slumber's new album "Finally Awake" is Christ worthy rock that I believe any Christian rock fan is going to love.
1. Awake 10/10 - This is a very heavy and solid rock track. The vocals are spot on, and the guitar will totally rock you. The lyrics have to do with peer pressure, and trying to look like someone else instead of yourself. Wonderful song.
2. Last Regret 7/10 - A metal fashioned lament, woeing the singers lost years without Christ. A good strong melody, and wonderful guitar save this song, as the vocals resort to screaming more than once.
3. Missing Pages 10/10 - Wonderful tune. This is the CD's main radio hit, and it shines. Basically this song speaks out to lost people who have built walls around their hearts and souls.
4. My Only Hope 10/10 - Great rock song about Christ being our only hope. One of the heavier songs on the album.
5. Always 9/10 - Great acoustic drven ballad.
6. Breaking Away 10/10 - My favorite ballad on the album. The change from verse to chorus is amazingly unique, and the lyrics are so encouraging. "Breaking away, from everything that's hopeless, the world ahead looks wonderful today."
7. Burning Bridges 10/10 - The next great fist pumper on the album. I like to listen to this one cranked up.
8. Undone 10/10 - A wonderful ballad that finds the band crying out to Jesus, asking for restoration.
9. On My Way Home 9/10 - Yet another great ballad.
10. Broken Buildings 10/10 - Heavy rock set to a punk beat and a major key, I love it.
11. Every Saturday 8/10 - Great closing number, not as great as "Breaking Away" or "Undone" but a good slow song to close the album.
Overall this is a great CD that I hope you get the chance to enjoy.
AWESOME REAL CHRISTIAN PERFORMERS.......2007-05-02
I had the pleasure of seeing these guys perform at a local church and they were amazing!! They, especially Joseph, the lead singer, have such an amazing passion for the Lord and they make that known in every song, but without making it too corny. Awesome rock songs that when you sing along with them you really are praising the Lord. I highly recommend this CD to anyone, Christian or not.
Good Music With Very Good Lyrics.......2007-04-11
'Finally Awake' is a very good rock album.
Many of the songs contain powerful guitars and drums with a rather hard rock sound. Some of the tracks are a bit mellower. All contain positive lyrics with a Christian theme.
Seventh Day Slumber is never one to shy away from referring to God or Jesus in their music. This collection is no exception to that.
Some of the songs that are very good include the following: Awake, Breaking Away, Undone, On My Way Home, and Every Saturday. I particularly like 'Missing Pages'.
As an aside, if you have not seen this group in concert, they would be a great one to catch. In addition to their very enjoyable music, the lead singer, Joseph Rojas, has a very powerful testimony that will make an impression on anyone.
I recommend this album. It is a good one for anyone. Harder rock fans will particularly like it.
