Sophisticated mysticism.......2007-02-23
So often, spiritually-themed music is simplistic or treacly or pounds you with its message. Rutenberg never falls into these traps. His music and lyrics are beautiful and heartfelt; they are also consistently interesting and sophisticated. This is a wonderful, compelling album.
Delightful music inspired by Rumi's enlightened poetry.......2007-02-16
If, as I do, you love the poetry of Rumi and other great Sufi masters this beautiful collection of songs will come as a boundless treasure of love, inspiration and magic inviting you to join Rumi on his spiritual journey. Mischa Rutenberg is not only a very talented composer and musician, he also has a voice that dispells clouds and sings directly to the heart. Listen to this album with family and friends; or play it in your car on your way to work: your day will have no nights! Although I value night as much as day - especially since many of Rumi's spritual wanderings took place under the Persian moon...
Deeply Spiritual World Music, Singing the Heart of Rumi's Poetry.......2007-01-31
I bought this album based on all the positive reviews I read. I was not disappointed! It is a fusion of world influences ranging from the Far East to Latin rhythms and melodies. The singer's voice sonorously expresses the heart of Rumi's poetry - I listen to this album when I need a smile and remember the beauty of Rumi's message. This will make a wonderful gift for fellow music and poetry lovers! Thanks!
Too sweet.......2007-01-14
This might be OK for kid's music but it seemed trite to me. I view Rumi as a mystic not a pop star.
Wonderful - Can't Stop Listening!.......2006-09-19
Even if you have never heard of the Sufi poet Rumi, you will love this album. I have been listening to it on the computer for the past two weeks while I write-and can't stop. It is truly addictive. Mischa's voice is beautiful, and the tracks are set together in such a way as to create the sense of a narrative journey - a Rumiesque operetta. Each song reflects a different musical genre and cultural influence, harmoniously integrating Cole Porter with world beat and contemporary folk and pop. My favorite tracks are "Without You" "Our Days Have No Nights" "Circle Turn and Spin" and "Like a Marble of Love," the last of which translates Rumi's words into Spanish! Lovely.

Album Description
I am deeply touched by the poetry of Jelaluddin Rumi, a 13th century Sufi poet whose work is infused with his profound relationship with the divine. My own encounter with Rumi has been a life changing inspiration that has moved me to create music and songs with his magical words at the center. Many of these pieces came through meditation and improvisation, and were composed and refined over time. In staying true to the essence of Rumi's spirit, I wanted the music to be immediate - born in a state of flow and carrying that loving energy to others as they experience the words and music together in a new way.
In performing these songs, I've been struck by the incredible chemistry that happens. The words and music seem to be a channel for each other, the room becomes alive and all of us in it wake up. That they can connect with us so effortlessly and completely is both a testament to the translators, and to the exquisite beauty, soul and power of the work, originally written in Farsi.
I want to thank Coleman Barks, Jonathan Star and Kabir Helminski for their inspiring translations; and to Michael for his generosity in offering his exquisite illustrations. I thank Phyllis, for her hauntingly beautiful voice; Paul, for his soulful reeds; and Bob, for the wonderful serenity of his flute. I thank Jamey Reilly for his selfless guidance and beautifully attuned design; and Anne for her deeply personal photography. I thank my friends, colleagues and students for keeping me vibrant and passionate and schooling me on poetry, dance and collaboration. Above all, I thank Lisa for her loving presence, poetic soul and insistence that this music be heard. All have supported this project in ways too countless to imagine.

The Soul Wakes.......2005-08-17
Each song has flavor all its own that will satisfy your inner hunger and the outer. Gentle to foot tapping tempos, along with a wonderful variety of instruments will keep you listening over and over again. Every song is a present waiting to be opened. The real skill is when the words, vocal, and music flow so beautifully that no one element upstages the other. When all the efforts are in unity with each other to be presented as one sound. When this occurs we say ,"wow, that was a great song." When it happens for an entire CD we tell our friends, make phone calls, send e-mails, shout it from the roof tops! This is us Shouting from the roof tops GET THIS CD.

I heard Michael's music for the first time on WXPN (Gene Shay's show) and was blown away by the ways in which he wove the exquisite poetry of Rumi with his own inspired musical creations. Hearing him in concert less than a week later, the intensity of the passion and magic increased 100-fold. Sitting in the audience, surrounded by souls listening with rapt attention, I was moved with a certainty that the poet himself was whispering in Michael's ear throughout the performance. At turns, deeply peaceful and vibrantly energetic. What a gift! Thank you for sharing it with us.

This was a performance like no other. I think the angels must have been listening in, humming along, lending their presence to this magical phenomenon. Each of Michael's songs ripples outward from the unique corner of the soul in which it was first received, creating a sumptuous tapestry of sound and meaning that seeks out -- and illuminates -- those mysterious recesses in the souls of his listeners. This all happens by way of a voice that's a conduit to the innermost heart, coupled with an extraordinarily flexible guitar technique. The result is music which follows the soul with rare proximity through the exquisite, elusive meanderings of its mystical journey.

I just want to thank you for sharing your music with the world - it is
truly beautiful. I have been inspired by Rumi and many of the other
sufi poets to embark on my own spiritual journey and greatly enjoy
listening to your cd of Rumi's poetry.
blessings,
alex
This was my first encounter with Rumi's poetry--and what a beautiful introduction it was. Michael London's music and vocals are the perfect complement to Rumi's richly metaphorical verse. Michael's voice is smoky and soulful on this CD; the interplay between his guitar and the musicians who back him up is by turns jazzy, mysterious, tranquilizing and otherworldly. Michael's melodies and the ensemble's percussive beat communicate the longing in Rumi's poems. Stretch out on a couch, pour yourself a glass of wine, light a candle, and listen to "Breathe into me." You'll be enraptured. And you'll find yourself humming the refrain all the next day.

Beautiful Renditions.......2006-03-26
I have been very interested to hear the variety of interpretations various Western artists have used to sing the illuminating words of the perfect poet... Rumi. I am very impressed with quite a few of the songs on this CD. I have heard several versions of the poem "The Field". None convey the meaning of the words more beautifully than the version found on this CD. The same can be said of several other familiar poems sung in this collection. As a fellow musician sailing similar waters I am delighted by Jeff's work. I recommend this collection highly.
