Album Description

A vocalist and guitarist that writes and produces most of his own music, Jonathan Butler has had successes over his twenty-five year recording career in pop, R&B, smooth jazz and adult formats. Self-produced, the songs on The Worship Project reflect the heart of a man who feels that he is in the best place he has been in personally in over a decade. The album is incredibly soulful and the messages are deeply spiritual. Butler's nylon guitar, smooth piano and jazzy vocals intertwine with shuffling percussion rhythms to create this 12-song gospel marvel.

5 out of 5 stars Love The Worship Project.......2007-03-09

This CD is very inspirational. Jonathan Butler has a beautiful voice and utilizes it well in this CD. The songs are very uplifting and easy to listen to. I enjoy it, and so do others when they hear it either in my car or in my home.

3 out of 5 stars Wanted a little more.......2007-01-24

I enjoy Jonathan Butler as an artist---incredible talent, however, this CD left me wanting a little more from this project. Some good worship songs. I was disappointed to find that my favorite song "Falling in Love with Jesus" was not the version that is frequently heard on the radio with Kirk Whalun.

5 out of 5 stars The Worship Project - Jonathan Butler CD.......2007-01-20

I LOVE THIS CD!! I do not regret buying it one bit. "Falling in Love with Jesus" is my favorite song on this cd. Hearing Jonathan's voice and music to these worship songs is just BEAUTIFUL!!!

Jonathan Butler is an amazing artist. If you love the fusion of jazz, R and B you will love this project. As you listen to this album you will hear the heart of a worshipper who sings with a smooth and timeless sound. Enjoy this and other albums by Jonathan Butler.

5 out of 5 stars Tell a friend.......2007-04-15

The only song that received any real play from this CD was Tony Rich's achingly introspective and sorrowful 'Nobody Knows' (It was also reasonably covered by country artist Kevin Sharp). That's a shame because this is an excellent CD that deserves a greater audience than it has received to date. Mr. Rich is an amazing talent who was responsible for just about every creative element in the creation of this piece of work. The CD starts with the haunting song 'Hey Blue' that sets a high bar that is easily maintain throughout. Some CDs need to be given to friends to be "discovered". Do yourself a favor, by this CD twice - once for yourself and once for a friend. You won't regret it and your friend will be impressed with your musical tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Tony Rich, the little known but much loved singer........2005-08-20

I have always loved the song "Nobody Knows", but for a long time I didn't know who sung it. I dicided one day that I was determined to find out. So I went to my local Barnes and Noble, and looked up the song on one of their machines that will let you look up any artist, album or song. I found out that Tony Rich was singer, and I just ordered a different cd then this one, but this one is fine as well, I think I ordered a best of collection. I think that Tony Rich is great lyrist. I have found a lot of comfort in this song because I just had a falling out with a friend that I'd had for 12 and a half years. This song describes perfectly how I feel. When I first stopped talking or seeing him, I heard this song on the radio, and I just started sing along to it. This is truly a great song for people going through tough times in their lives.

Again a fine song, a fine artist, and a fine collection of his work.

4 out of 5 stars Fantabulous CD!!! A MUST BUY!!!.......2005-08-12

I know music, been writing music for years now. Music is my life; I also write music professionally.

So here is The Run Down:
I heard Tony Rich back when I was in like 6th or 7th grade I was like some where in between the ages of 11-13 and I heard the song "Nobody Knows" and I loved it. Come 2004 I remembered the song and artist and bought the cd. Just went out on a limb!

I must say, a very different but very unique artist and style of music. All in all a AWESOME cd, very good relaxing music. A must have if you like Nobody Knows.
Lots of good songs on the cd, not just a few but lots!

5 out of 5 stars Tony Rich - Jack of all trades.......2005-01-12

When you look in the booklet that comes with the cd, the first thing you will notice is that this album is all Tony Rich. It is written, arranged, produced, sung, everything, is done by Tony Rich. This fact leaves me in total confusion. How could someone so outstanding in everything and anything pertaining to the production of an album not be a huge superstar?

Before even listening to the songs, I read the lyrics. Reading them, it is clear that Tony has a style unlike anything else out there. The lyrics seem very freeform. Case in point, the first lines in the entire album are "Late one night at the cafe/ I think I had a Greyhound that night/ Lookin' for my lover in the darkness."

When I played the album, I found the lyrics weren't the only place of uniqueness. Tony didn't follow a rigid flow to his songs, instead, singing as he felt right. It added a very exotic flair to the songs and made them interesting to listen to.

However, Tony's songs don't just get praise for being unique or for being totally of his construction. The songs are outstanding in every way. Tony's voice is beautiful and has an amazing range. Likewise, the songs deliver their messages without being blunt. If Tony wants to say I Love You, he doesn't just say it, he explains it. And the emotion he shows when at it is just wonderful. I know this probably makes no sense but thats because Tony Rich is like nothing else out there.

Personal favorite songs: Nobody knows, Missin You, Hey Blue, Grass is Greener, Leavin

At the mentino of Leavin, I was reminded of another perk of Tony Rich's album. The beats are amazing. Leavin has such a wonderful beat that really gets the mood going.

Overall, this album is outstanding. The only sad point is that its 44 minutes long with only 10 songs. But on the other hand, these songs are worth every minute of it and you certainly get what you paid for and more.

5 out of 5 stars Two Heavyweights At Their Best!.......2003-07-15

Stanley Clarke and George Duke, two musical titans who'd
worked together for years finaly get around to doing a duo album,
namely one that emphasises the funk that both artist's regular
releases tended to skim over and considering funk is both artists
best asset, that's a wonderful thing.the big pop hit "Sweet Baby"
is a decent FM ballad but is not representative of this album
as a whole.The slick,uptempo R&B of "I Just Want To Love You",
the quirky cover of Richard Berry's infamous "Louie,Louie" and
Dukes "Finding My Way",a catchy pop-rock number are obvious
highlites-the latter being among Duke's Top 5 all-time best
compositions. But it's in the slamming funk splatters of the
rousing instrumental opener "Wild Dogs" and the vocal numbers
"Winners" and "Let's Get Started" where this collection finds it's full flower."Touch And Go" is a slightly more R&B-sy ballad
then "Sweet Baby" while the brief intro "Never Judge A Cover By
It's Book" (clever tital,George!) deserves to have been drawn out
a bit longer.A veritable collosus!

3 out of 5 stars One star for each great song.......2003-06-10

"Sweet Baby", "I Just Want to Love You", "Touch and Go"- these were some of my favorite songs during the summer of '81. I didn't really purchase the album(or rather cassette) until the summer of '85. The three killer songs mentioned above were a staple of the Black AM radio station in my hometown. Before recording "Vol. 1", George Duke and Stanley Clarke were Jazz and Pop superstars in their own solo careers. This first pairing had strong songwriting and vocals. Amazingly, both Mr Clarke and Mr. Duke have very similar vocal timbres and styling. Musically, the album is very staightforward and simple. Since the duo wrote their own material and play most of the instruments, they no doubt knew exactly how each song should sound. The rest of the album has some okay material (althought some of it is truely embrassing), but the three pop singles mentioned above carry the set as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars The Clarke/Duke Project review.......2000-06-11

If you want to hear some great bass lines, I strongly suggest this great cd because it is perfect for you. Stanley clarke is truly a great bass player and he sure comes out in this cd. It's no wonder why Clarke has inspiered so many great bass players. One of whom is Les Claypool from Primus. With Clarke and Duke together they make a great combo. This is a great cd and I hope you enjoy it.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Emerson Quartet has made its first all-Haydn recording, featuring seven of his most famous quartets on two CDs. Presented chronologically, the program is arranged for utmost contrast of tonality, atmosphere, and character. The prevailing mood is joyous, as befits the occasion, though three quartets are in minor keys. The opening work, Op. 20, No. 5, is dark, brooding, and achingly beautiful. Its inner tension is released in passionate climaxes, its slow movement is serenely pastoral, its finale a double fugue. This is followed by Op. 33, No. 2, nicknamed "The Joke" for its finale, whose coda is punctuated by several "fake" endings: general pauses of increasing length designed to tempt the audience into premature applause. To make its full effect, this "joke" depends on watching the players sit in frozen silence. Also in minor are the dramatic Op. 76, No. 2, nicknamed "Fifths" for its opening theme, which contains the famous "Witches' Minuet," a fierce two-part canon between the upper and lower instruments, and Op. 74, No. 3, nicknamed "The Rider" for its galloping finale. Op. 64, No. 5, is called "The Lark" for its soaring beginning; the finale is a brilliant perpetual motion marathon. Op. 54, No. 1, and Op. 77, No. 1, radiate good cheer and sunshine. The Emerson, whose violinists alternate, plays all this with its customary meticulousness, polish, and ease. Some of the fast movements are surprisingly leisurely, and at times one could wish for more inwardness or abandon. A third, bonus disc taken from earlier Emerson recordings contains movements of eight quartets, from Mozart to Ives. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Perfection at its Very Worst.......2005-01-09

If I rate this album with one star, it is to say something relative to other recordings and to the standard to which I hold the Emerson Quartet. In Haydn, where wit, joy, humor and vivaciousness are more important than in any other composer (?), the Emerson's polish works so incredibly against the works, that I cannot but dissuade a potential explorer of Haydn most urgently from getting this recording.

Upon first hearing it will sound fine enough... technically it is perfect, the sound is fine... but it will reveal itself (immediately in comparison - or else over time) as tedious, meticulous and missing the point. The Lindsay's give these quartets all the gusto they need... sadly, they are seldomly in tune. With the Quatour Mosaiques you might get the finest accounts available (historical instruments or not), and the Kodaly Quartet on Naxos is a budget option that deserves your ears and trust.

If a listener wants to experience the Emerson String Quartet at their best, late Beethoven, Shostakovich, Webern et al. offer far better opportunities than Haydn (and Schubert).

5 out of 5 stars 3 DISCS ACTUALLY.......2004-11-16

The third is a set of individual movements by Mozart, Schubert, Dvorak, Bartok, Ives, Shostakovich, Webern and finally a sizzling performance of the fugue from Beethoven's third Rasumovsky. It's brilliant, so I don't know why they are being so coy about it.

The first thing that I commend strongly about this set of 7 Haydn quartets is the actual selection. They range in order of composition from one of the op 20's to the great op77 #1, and 3 of the 7 are in minor keys. I get a definitely serious feel to the Emersons' approach to all 7. Op 33 #2 'The Joke' is included, and for once the jokiness at the end is downplayed, to my great relief. Another aspect that interested me was the fairly moderate speeds they take in the finales to the first 4 numbers, getting distinctly livelier in the last 3. I find this extremely convincing -- the music in the earlier finales is slighter than in the later ones and to my ears it benefits from not being rushed. What I would have liked to find out from the liner notes is whether that, or something else entirely, was the Emersons' thinking, but the remarks are to a familiar pattern -- useful and informative background information, very little about the performances, and rather gushy 'chatty-learned' stuff on the music.

I would describe this as a really distinguished set. It ought to suit experienced listeners in search of new insights, and for new(er)comers the format has been quite brilliantly devised as an introduction to the string quartet repertory presenting the father of the genre in depth followed by glimpses of what his successors did with the heritage he left them. Recorded quality also excellent.

5 out of 5 stars String Quartet Delight.......2002-01-16

This tribute to Haydn is spectacular. Their playing is impeccable, with fine definition and movement. I especially enjoy their offering of Opus 33, The Joke. It is light and playful and bounces with liltiness.

This is truly refreshing music to listen to. The bonus CD of works by Mozart, Shostakovich, Dvorak, et al is wonderful as well. This finales in Beethoven's op. 59 for String Quartet.
Magnificent!

Thanks Emerson for 25, may 25 more be yours and your fans!

5 out of 5 stars haydn, haydn, haydn.......2001-11-19

I heard this recording on the classical station that I listen to.
I now have the CD's in my car and my son and I (he's 8) absolutely love this recording. It is so wonderful we feel like we are seeing the quartet in person. Bravo, Bravo. We will be giving this one as gifts for the Holidays.

5 out of 5 stars Simply marvelous...........2001-10-30

I have grown old with the Emerson; they recently celebrated their twenty-fifth season with the Stanford University Lively Arts, and I have not missed one of those performances. This year they played four of the quartets from their Haydn Project. The audience was as thrilled as any listener of these CDs will be.

In addition to their extraordinary performance, the Emerson have chosen seven of Haydn's most delightful quartets, bound to rekindle the excitement of knowledgeable music lovers and to entice new listeners. The liner notes provide an introduction not only to Haydn but also to the string quartet as a form. I cannot think of a better introduction: for one who wants to learn but is timid, here is where to begin.

The bonus CD offers movements from other quartets that the Emerson often play as encores. What a joy!

You have to love any guy who compares the loss of a loved one to acid reflux, especially when that guy is supposed to be some kind of love man. Now, to be sure, Tony Rich's sophomore CD is filled with songs all about, surprise, sex, and love. But the low-key Lothario works his love jones with cleverness and lyrical twists and turns. Even at his most metaphoric (what is a "bed of the heart"?), Rich still can pull hooks, choruses, and off-the-beaten-path imagery out of his trick bag. Rich creates lilting love songs about the act of not killing oneself ("No Time Soon," which features slide guitar from Eric Clapton) and delivers the finger-popping title track, wherein the object of desire is described as "having Halle's eyes." Even with generic missteps such as "Cool Like That," Rich here takes a giant leap forward into the ranks of Real Songwriters. Too bad he can't claim to make the same moves when it comes to his vocals. Once tagged as just a (gifted) Babyface wannabe, Rich has upped the ante by adding Prince's dulcet tones to his pantheon of musical mimicry. Now, I guess you can't help sounding the way you do, but couldn't Rich could try to alter his phrasing just a little? Because as skilled as he is, he's still sort of faceless, and you never get to know just who the guy who writes the songs really is. --Amy Linden

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A cd for those with deep earthy soul and genuine class.......2005-05-13

All the songs are such a poetic delight to listen to. Tony writes such fun, flirty lyrics that leave your imagination speckled with bursts of sunshine -- "take my heart and hook it up to your veins", "I baptized her in a bubblebath". Not even the more serious songs get me down. They leave me refreshed instead. Tony oozes Harlem class and the song "Birdseye" reminds me of the movie "LoveJones". Was it a soundtrack of the movie? If not, shoulda been!
An amazing buy you wont regret decades from today

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, simply incredible.......2005-04-01

After hearing words, I couldn't get enough of Tony Rich and immediately bought his second album. This may just be the album to replace Words as my favorite album of all times.

In many ways, the albums are the same. Both end shortly after 40 minutes of play. Both are penned, produced and sung by Tony Rich. Both are amazing.

However, this album seems to have replaced the sadness that filled the tracks of Words with a lighthearted feeling of rejoice over the wonders of life.

The first two songs of the album, Birdseye and Silly Man seem at times, to have rather... strange lyrics. "But I found you/ So I'll bake you a chocolate cake" comes to mind. However, the simpleness of the songs reflects as someone else here put it best, that in love, you feel this easygoing relaxedness and just say what you like. And these songs embody that feeling, I listen to them and I can't help but feel uplifted and relaxed.

Song 3, my personal favorite, is incredibly catchy and reiterates that feeling of happiness in the world. Where "Grass is Green" on Words talked about living life hard and contemplating suicide, "No Time Soon" says while life had been that way, things improved and now, there's no reason to leave this world. The song is uplifting and gets the emotions running high.

The album then enters a somber state, pleading with a lost loved one to come back and take him away. The rest of the songs arouse all sorts of emotions and never fail to show a great deal of heart in Tony's voice. Tony pleads, rejoices and cries about the way things are. And in every action, the listener is right there beside him. Lamenting over the pains he feels in his stomach as he fights the loss of the loved one, exhibiting empathy towards the woman who is stuck in a horrible relationship but has no idea how to get out of it, and exemplifying all the feelings that run through a persons mind, Tony does it all.

This album is brilliant, evidence of the sorrowful state R&B has entered today. The world needs Tony Rich to remind it what can be done with music. I recommend this album to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful..........2002-06-28

Perhaps resigned to never reaching the commerical chart peaks of his debut single "Nobody Knows", Tony just relaxed and spoke from the heart on this, his second LP...

These songs are of rare beauty and like many of his "neo-soul" labelled contemporaries he nods to influences (Prince being an obvious example) of a bygone era while all the while keeping his own individual style.

Lyrically, here he may even improve on the heady heights of his excellent debut album of three years previous "Words". He is very open and emotional while never coming off as insincere or making cynical attempts to be anything other than what he is.

The album as a whole is tremendous although personal favourites would be "If You're An Angel" and "My Stomach Hurts", both in which he bares his very soul.

Eric Clapton features (Returning favour for Tony's work on his album of same year) with three guitar guest slots, but as always it's Mr Rich pulling the strings, writing and producing all but one of these lush, sonic landscapes.

Tony has been relatively quiet since "Birdseye" and it would be a tragedy if this this album proves to be the last we ever hear from him. I am certain modern masterpieces like this and "Words" touched listeners very deeply (they did me) and he deserves far more credit as such...

very nice album...

you could just read the cd sleeve and enjoy it

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing album, that was sadly overlooked!.......2002-02-01

This is one of the best R&B albums that I own, and I own A TON! This album was a little too ahead of its time, and a little too mature for commercial airplay. It might fit in nicely now, in the world of Jill Scott, Blial, and Alicia Keys.
I haven't ever heard any of these songs on the radio, but that is fine with me. This is one of those albums that you have to take a leap, and just purchase based on either the recommendations of others or your love of the artist's past work. For me, I fell in love HARD with Tony's debut album. Just about everything on it was wonderful. A beautiful mix of acoustic guitar, classic soul music, and understated songwriting.
On the follow up, he grows even more as a songwriter - while providing even greater music to back him up. While on his debut there were songs that I skipped consistently, I didn't find one that I didn't love on this one. None of the songs sounded too this, or too that... everything sounds just right today, just as it did the day I bought it years ago!
The standouts on the album are probably Birdseye, If You're an Angel, Thoughts of Leavin', and My Stomach Hurts. The sensitivity that bleeds through the lyrics on the album will blow you away, as will the great instrumentation. Tony Rich does have a unique sound. He isn't quite classic soul, he isn't quite rock, and he isn't quite folk. He takes the best elements of those three genres, and blends them together for your enjoyment.
Who cares that this album didn't get airplay? I didn't, and I still don't. If you are looking for a diamond in the rough, you can stop your search!

4 out of 5 stars Cd review.......2007-06-09

The song that I first heard on my internet station was "Red Wine". I then decided to order the cd to see what other songs I would like. I was pleasantly surpised by the tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Bad vocals..........2004-07-13

Although I find Tony Rich's vocals rather out of tune, there are some highlights here: 'Red Wine', 'Travelling Alone' and 'Don't Call Me' are good (in terms of melody)
The lyrics are sometimes a little out of place and stupid.
Maybe if he had put in better tunes, it would make up for the awful vocals.

5 out of 5 stars In A Grand Tradition.......2004-06-09

Tony Rich is part of the school of black musicians such as
Vernon Reid,Prince,Terrance Trent D'Arby,Lenny Kravitz and the
immortal Jimi Hendrix who see no distinction between R&B,funk and rock n' roll-they're just classic black music to them. And
of course this album contains songs in ALL those styles. From
the hard rockin' "Future Daze" to the sublimely grooving "Free"
these songs varriate from hard to soft and back in the space of
15 selections. And I can't see ANYTHING but good come from that!

5 out of 5 stars Third time, still lucky..........2003-10-14

Having shaken off the stagnation of his Arista shackling Tony Rich has regrouped and come back with another great album. While his last effort (1998's Birdseye) didn't contain much in the way of singles it was seen by fans as arguably better than the platinum, grammy winning Words. Now on Compendia Records he has room to breathe and without the wish to release singles can concentrate solely on making a consistent LP. His labelmate Terence Trent D'Arby has experienced a similar scenario as regards his artistically satisfying Wildcard Joker's Edition also.

Future Daze is a funky, edgy start on an album frequently more rock influenced (Read guitars high in the mix) than the past work. Free is a defiant manifesto for his post major label emancipation while Red Wine's groove recalls the commonly emancipated influence Prince's classic 1987 number Strange Relationship. Tony doesn't let down the fans as regards ballads either with the radio play success Travelling Alone. Don't Call Me's country twang and the plaintive When I Miss You are other examples of The Tony Rich Project's continual quality on the slower tempo material. There's even a chance to throw in a live track with Yeah! Yeah! taking us out in style.

Resurrected may not top any charts or permeate the mainstream (No singles or videos almost guarantee that) but it's quality cannot be doubted so critically he can expect great reaction like the reviews here demonstrate. With a live album and DVD in the works, The Tony Rich Project community is one to stay close with for the latest news, developments and releases.

3 out of 5 stars Solid set.......2003-10-05

Before I begin, I have to say that it's tiring and annoying to see people with seemingly immature minds incapable of writing honest reviews at this Web site, giving seemingly everything four or five stars, coming off as some early teens bubblegum pop fan gushing over his/her favorite singer, whom they like because he/she is pretty, cute, etc. Even here on this thread, someone gives this album a four star and even admits they haven't heard the album. now onto my review.
Anyone following Tony Rich Project's career and hearing the group's previous two albums -- Words and Birdseye -- will know what TRP is about -- R&B soul, with a touch of Prince, Hendrix, and with a solid, artsy delivery that is good enough to make you forget about the product that is passed off as R&B on the radio.
So this album won't bring any surprises to TRP fans. It's more of the same, and that's not a bad thing. He does rock out a bit more on the guitar on the first few tracks, and then settles into his comfort zone, delivering his familiar style of mellow ballads that rely more on feeling, substance, and emotion than formulaic beats. And so while it won't wow you as perhaps "Words" had, it is worth getting. New fans should start with "Words." TRP always managed to move with his songs, and he (yes, despite the band name, this is about Tony Rich) accomplishes that here. When he is no longer moving in his delivery, that's when it's time to worry.

1 out of 5 stars Sophomore Blues.......2007-02-19

I was really excited about this cd since I fell in love with Christion's first album, "Ghetto Cyrano". However, I was severely disappointed. It doesn't even have as much soul as most songs on the RADIO!!! The beats are generic and boring, lyrics sound forced and you can just tell that these guys are no longer singing about stuff they understand or know about. "My Reason"?!?! That song's just cheesy and I only listen to it for a good laugh. And "Where Yo Girlfriend At"? Again, only for a good laugh. Not sure what happened between the first album and this one (other than Allen Anthony's departure), but things just ain't the same. And GW's right, most of the reviews claiming this is a must-buy are from family members, friends, managers, and other business partners. KNyte had something to do with their silly "Let Em Know" video, I believe. Anyway, I hope y'all find this review helpful....if you want a Christion cd, go for the first one. But hey, everyone has their own taste in music and maybe y'all don't care bout listening to the real..... but if you do, then stay far far away from this cd (unless you just want somethin for laughs).

3 out of 5 stars Different from first but still smooth.......2006-05-17

I have been a fan of christion since they first came out. I do admit that this is some what different from the first in terms of the music. I think what makes the songs good are the story lines. I loaded the cd to my MP3 player with the first and compared and it still keeps that street (pimps and players) style to the songs. There are some good tracks that start on chapaters 4 and on. The rest are something that I would say you have to relate to in order to understand. You can notice the difference of A.A not being in the group. As a matter of fact, the best songs on the cd are when he appears on the track. Overall I would say its not a bad CD but if you compare it to the first that was more for the "grown and sexy" then you would not feel it as much. You can also tell that the touch of Jay-Z is not on this release. He played a big part in the story lines they wrote about while Dame Dash selected the tracks. Out of all the tracks I think most would fall in love with Slown Down, and Broken Streets. "My Reason" should be loaded to your romantic selection. If you are someone that can relate to the stories then by all means you will enjoy the tracks. As for A.A I hear he had an album coming out called Oakland International so lets hope that will entice the hears of the ones missing him.

1 out of 5 stars Whats going on here?.......2006-04-19

First, I was really looking forward to this album. I do understand that people have different tastes but "a must have", and "slammin" and "what music has been missing". I think I found all of the fans that think that American Idol is soulful. This is either a really distasteful joke or its the mothers of the artists leaving comments. Im not trying to rip anyone apart but this album bears "NOT ONE" resemblance of the creativity, the production, and vocals that this group once carried. Ok...so Its different. No big deal. But Im just trying to figure out what these people are listening to. All and all, dont take my word for it. And dont take theirs. Buy it for yourself and Im sure it will become clear on whether this is the last Christion album you buy.

3 out of 5 stars Their may have been a reason for no album in so long.......2006-01-25

The original Roc-A-Fella soul brothers are finally back with an album of smoothed out love songs and up-tempo club jams. The Roc fell apart and they moved on to The Mint and deliver a 20-track album with five chapters and mix results. My first thoughts about this album were that it was too long and that has proven to be true upon repeated listens. The other question I have is what the significance is of the chapters. They are trying to tell a story but the songs in each chapter do not always match up with the chapter's title. As far as the music goes, it's just ok. There are lots of R&B/Soul singers out doin their thing and these two are no different. They have the intense sexual songs (Presidential Suite #8) and they have the love song that goes out to the girl they lost (Farrah #15), did they ever stop and think maybe if they were not out trying to freak every girl they might not have lost that one perfect one? The production is nothing special, Kenni Ski does a decent job pulling double duties as singer and primary beat maker. The one thing that it seems these brothers got goin for em is that they can sing. Their harmonies and verses are generally on point and stand out at times, compared to the rest of today's modern so-called "Soul" singers. If you are looking for some real classic type soul music then go check Bilal, but if you want modern R&B with a touch of the classic seventy's sound this album will probably at least wet your appetite.

3 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPPENED TO THE CROONERS???.......2005-12-14

Christión did some serious croonin' on their debut release "Ghetto Cyrano", bringing us hustlers-need-love-too anthems and street-life grooves reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. Now on their very disappointing follow-up "Project Plato", Christión minus vocalist Allen Anthony have become a bit too mainstream for my taste, sounding a lot like these new kids on the block who beg and whine just to make a dime--y'all know who you are!!! Nothing on "Project Plato" grabbed me, although I'm sure with the current condition of music today it will appeal more to the masses. Every song here lyrically sounds ridiculous and the sexiness seems forced, unlike on "Ghetto Cyrano" when it was natural (obviously due to Anthony's absense). I tried listening for a glimmer of hope on this release--a song that made me fall in love with Christión in the first place, but I simply couldn't. Maybe as I listen to "Project Plato" more, it will grow on me, but that's not likely. I know each artist's release has to progress and shouldn't sound dated. I didn't expect Christión to sound the way they did eight years ago, but you gotta admit at least eight years ago--during the Timberland era--music was music and Christión had it goin' on.

5 out of 5 stars While soulbrother Rahsaan brings in the funk, Donnie is treating .......2006-08-12

Steve 'The Scotsman' Harvey is a household name in soul music. His name often appears as a producer of soul music on albums by the likes of The Temptations, Donnie and a whole bunch of soul artists as some of you might have noticed on the Devalicious album.
Steve's latest album is entitled "The Everyday People Project Vol.1". On this album it's Steve Harvey who invited the artists to join him in his daily work. The singers that participate on this project are: Ledisi, K.K., N'dambi, Rahsaan Patterson, Donnie, Linn Segolson, Keite Young, Storm and Pretty Terry. As every individual artist contributes to this project with his or her own quality,it results in an excellent variety of music to be heard. Nice to hear as well is the flute by Louis van Taylor on some of the tracks.

We hear soul music in a wide range and of course with a different approach by the artists. Where Ledisi shouts it out big time in the opener "I Can't Let You Go", Linn Segolson takes us on a slow ride in the beautiful ballad "Troubled Times". We hear a compassionate voice of K.K. in "Where Has The Love Gone" and sensual and husky notes sprouting from Storm's voice. Almost all the participants together with Steve took part in writing their song with N'dambi co-writing on three of the songs. Her duet with Keite Young is sublime. While soulbrother Rahsaan brings in the funk, Donnie is treating us in his own rebellious way. By the way Donnie's forthcoming album will be a Steve Harvey production as well.(TA)

    2 out of 5 stars dissapointing!.......2007-03-09

most of the remixes on this cd sound really out of date, instead of all this remixes they should have made a compilation with the original full length 12" mixes, especially for "This is my night" wich original mix is far better then the remix (and not available on cd until ....???). Many great remixer names are involved in this project, but in 2007 the original 12 inch versions still sound better!!!.

4 out of 5 stars Chaka Khan Life is a Dance Remix.......2006-11-10

Chaka Khan has done a remix of many of her tunes that where above outstanding during the disco dance fever of the 1970's. However, I have recently purchased a CD from Amazon.com called "Chaka Khan, Life is a Dance: The Remix Project". If rock pop music can be called classical then this particular creation of Chaka Khan and her musician associates can be truly considered classical. One can not merely sit down and keep still while this music is playing, in particular if you are in a dancing mood in the first place, celebrating or just feel good and want to dance. In the same instance, the remix is so skillfully directed and produced, if you just wanted to sit down and really enjoy this music for its composition as music this kind of attitude would be highly applicable as well.

5 out of 5 stars GUARANTEED TO GET YOUR PARTY STARTED!!!.......2005-05-06

This cd is a wonderful mix of not only the best of Chaka's hits, but the best of Chaka's voice. All of the songs have been remixed with a lot of bass, funk, and Chaka's vocals sent into chambers that blow the top of your head off and occasionally echo back.

The opener "Life Is A Dance" perfectly describes the hot mood within it. "I Know You, I Live You" goes to the max. Far more artistically arranged than the original! The wildly funky "This Is My Night" rocks with additional keyboard and percussion programming. "Eye To Eye" is a hot remix of a great song that becomes over 8 minutes of pulsating dance number. "Fate" is transformed into a cooking production number. The infectious percussion in "I'm Every Woman" coupled with the orchestral strings catapults this number way beyond the original version! And it's over 8 minutes long as well! "Clouds" blows a thunderous stormy arrangement right into a steamy 7.40 minutes of WOW!! The finale of "I Feel For You" far surpasses the original hit that everyone loves so much. When you end with this song, you will hit repeat and start the whole cd over again!

This one is a must for every Chaka fan. You will want to play it again and again!!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated remix project.......2003-04-23

The remixes done are wonderful and 1989 was a great year to pick for remixes for Chaka Khan. If remixes had been done now, it probably wouldn't even be worth the purchase. Pretty much all new remixes base themselves on the repetitive techno beat, which I find takes away the funkiness of the original production and mood of the song. This was also a good release because these are urban remixes. These are club/street songs that work perfectly for Chaka Khan. There are also some rare gems on here that are hard to find on CD anywhere else. "Slow Dancin'" is from her 1982 self-titled album that won a Grammy for best R&B album. I find it strange that since it won a Grammy that it's currently her rarest album to find now in her catalog of music. It would've been awesome if a remix of "What Cha' Gonna Do For Me?" was included. That would've been slammin' baby!

4 out of 5 stars Chaka Chaka Khan Grooves.......2000-08-18

This one is a keeper. I bought it in vinyl, cassette, and now CD. If you are looking for energy music, this ol'school grooves with the best that today offers. "Eye to Eye" is my favorite and never fails to energize me. "I'm Every Woman" is a must listen and smacks Whitney down. Great music.
