Parallel Lines [Gold CD]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Until 1978, Blondie was perceived mostly as a '60s-referencing, British-Invasion-meets-girl-groups band. With veteran producer Mike Chapman at the helm for their third album, though, everything changed for this group bred from the New York punk scene. Honing in on Blondie's strongest points--Deborah Harry's come-hither vocals and Clem Burke's powerhouse drumming--Chapman helped recast the band to the power pop side of new wave, and with impressive results. Driven by the punk-meets-disco chart-topping hit, "Heart of Glass," and the herky-jerky "One Way or Another," as well as a muscular cover of the Nerves' "Hanging on the Telephone," Parallel Lines established Blondie as major stars. --Billy Altman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

"Millions of young guys once had a love and it was a gas".......2007-01-31
Back when Blondie was being hailed as the biggest new-wave band in pop music by fans and critics alike, there were also just as many critics that quickly dismissed Blondie as "bubblegum pop," and one group that would never have staying power. But I think it's been observed enough how the group has had the last laugh. Parallel Lines helped establish Blondie as a serious music group and turned their cult following into commercial success. This album is also the first where Debbie Harry's voice gets sharpened with the sensibility of a sweet, vulnerable girl one minute to sultry and rapturous behind disco grooves the next. The album made punk, pop, and disco shake hands, which was a method unheard of in 1978. Songs like "Hanging on the Telephone," "Picture This," "Pretty Baby," and "Sunday Girl," have become irresitable pop gems, while "I Know But I Don't Know," and "Fade Away & Radiate," featuring a terrific guitar lick by Robert Fripp, are punk-driven classics. Last but not least are the two hits that are forever getting played on the classic rock stations of today in "One Way or Another," and "Heart of Glass." And how has Debbie Harry played out as lead singer after all these years? As Rolling Stone stated when this album was ranked #140 on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, "Madonna was surely watching."
Blondie's Finest!!.......2007-01-27
This is the first Blondie album I ever bought apart from the greatest hits CDs, and it was worth every penny!!! It is my favorite Blondie album, and there is not one song on this album that is not fun to listen to and sing along to! Every song sounds like a radio hit! My favorite is, of course, "Heart of Glass." It has such a smooth and polished sound to it that you can't help but sing along! "Hanging on the Telephone" is another standout among standouts. "11:59" is upbeat and pure pop. "Sunday Girl" sounds like it could have been a girl group song. Debbie's attitude really shines through on "Just Go Away." The interesting lyrics and drum beats (especially in the beginning) make "Fade Away and Radiate" an unforgettable song. Some music goes out of style as the years go on, but "Parallel Lines" is definintely an exception. Any fan of Blondie or just pop music in general is almost sure to find this album a real gem and a standout in their album collection!
Parellel Lines.......2006-12-21

The Peak of a Mercurial Band.......2006-07-05
I first heard Blondie's "Parallel Lines" LP while browsing at the Tower Records store in Westwood, near UCLA in 1978. By the time I heard the opening chords of the second song, I had a copy of the LP in line for the cash register.
Years have passed since, and a lot of Blondie's original fans were turned off or confused by some of their subsequent efforts. For those of you that used to really love Blondie, take another listen to Parallel Lines, and you'll immediately recall why. You probably haven't heard "Will Anything Happen," "11:59," "Pretty Baby," "Sunday Girl," or "Fade Away and Radiate" for a while, but they've held up pretty well. Add the classics "One Way or Another," "Hanging on the Telephone," and "Heart of Glass," and another listen to Parallel Lines is like running into an old friend.
This disk includes bonus tracks that reveal the band's live power, especially the fine power drumming of Clem Burke and Debbie Harry's rock diva vocal abilities, especially on a relatively raw version of "Bang a Gong."
!and this is why i love this album.......2006-06-28
It did truly change my life. I was 14 years old. I was smart, not abused or geeky but i needed a true outlet... I had loved spinning girl group 45's and Beatles records handed down to me. Parallel Lines introduced me to sarcasm. And it stuck. Also it's just a perfect record. Mike Chapman helped shape my adolescence, but this is his (almost) crowning moment. Try not to scream: "I fell in love with you". Everyone should have Parallel Lines.

Customer Reviews:
Timeless treasure.......2006-03-18
Blondie gave new credibility to pop music in the late 1970's. Soon outgrowing their punk roots, they created first the brilliant Plastic Letters in 1977, then this masterpiece the next year. At least four chart hits were lifted from this album, but there could've been more.
Picture This and Sunday Girl are evocative numbers with an undertone of sadness, somewhat in a 60's vein, while Heart Of Glass is of course the hypnotic mega selling pop disco hit, later covered by The Associates among others.
My other favourites include the experimental and moving Fade Away And Radiate (Was this perhaps influenced by Bowie?) and I'm Gonna Love You Too, a happily rolling power pop tune.
Tracks like Pretty Baby, 11:59 and Just Go Away are catchy and memorable too and could also have been hits. I'm not particularly fond of Hanging On The Telephone and the rest, but they also have plenty of melody and excitement. Blondie's pop displays wit and intelligence in the music, making wry comments on love and life.
Some music journalist once claimed: "Rocks gets stale, but pop rots." Blondie proves him wrong, very wrong. This music has a timeless appeal, and today still its intelligence enhances the lasting pleasure it gives me.

Product Description
Electronics, rock, ephemera, and mood make New Jerseys The 303s an ingenious meld of power and fragility. Ingrid Dahl and Parixit Davé learned most of their musical savvy together, unknowingly creating their own reverb-eclectic pop sound that resonates with intense attention to detail. The 303s music overflows with loud yet sweet aural dialogues that showcase Ingrid and Parixit's shared attractions to anxiety, love, experimentation, and letdown amidst all of their jarring guitars, complex rhythms, shoegazy fuzz, and synthesizer harmonics. Lines of Parallel Minds, the beautifully produced (by Stephen Hindman of Lismore) debut album, creates something new: a fluid balance between lo-fi and majestic, between careful and random, between indifference and sincerity... The best of parallel like-minded minds.

Beautiful and Graceful Album.......2006-07-18
This album was fabulous, loved it, it was extremely rare to find an album that every track is stellar, you won't be disappointed! This album is has become one of my favorites!
Gem in Garden State!.......2006-05-03
Got the CD yesterday. Just finished listening.
Love it. Very unique sound. Sort of mix of Electro, pop, and rock. Yet they managed sound very original.
Two front person, Ingrid and Parixit is such a Powerhouse! I loved their live performance too.
They sounds very clean-cut on CD, but their true color seems to show in their live performance. Powerful and edgy.
They have already established local fun-base, but I believe they are bound to become much more than that. Rock On!
Next Big Thing!.......2006-04-11
I am just so happy to find such a great band! It is a treasure to discover relatively unknown band who is bound to be famous!
Ingrid(vocal) has a beautiful ephemeral yet powerful voice and their music managed to sound nostalgic yet contemporary at the same time.
Catch them before they become too famous! It gives you a brag right!
Average customer rating:
- Mostly excellent....
- Unlikely, stunning mix of acoustic and electric virtuosity
- They should get together more often!

Mostly excellent...........2007-07-10
Many of the songs here rank with the best music of either man. Start first with "Andy Irvine and Paul Brady" and Gaughan's "Handful of Earth" though. (Both are available at Amazon.com).
In this collection, 'Captain Coulston' and 'Lads of the Fair' are excellent, but some of the ballads don't really hold my interest. They could be considered closer to 'art music' than folk, though its a matter of opinion... Gaughan plays acoustic guitar and dubs electric on one track, Irvine plays mandolin and bouzouki. Their rhythm is revolutionary in a way. They use riffs and melodic figures in the accompaniment, rather than only strummed chords. This virtuoso approach is a pleasure to hear (and examine if you play mandolin or guitar)
Unlikely, stunning mix of acoustic and electric virtuosity.......2001-11-06
I was at first taken aback at the mixture of Dick Gaughan's traditional acoustic work and Andy Irvine's electric guitar. You might imagine that it would ruin both styles of music. In fact, this unlikely combination produces some of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard (The Flowers of the Forest - for example). The juxtaposition of these two externally very different artists is is at times simply stunning. It may take more than one listen for the full depth and impact of these tunes to hit home, but it's an album of which you will not soon tire. Highly recommended.
They should get together more often!.......1999-05-26
This is a lovely collection of songs that should be enjoyable for any fan of Celtic music. And after hearing Dick Gaughan's "Flowers of the Forest", you'll be sold on him forever. It's simply one of the most beautiful, haunting pieces of music I've ever heard.
One of my all-time favorite songs.......1999-04-06
We've owned the LP version of this for years, and I'm DELIGHTED that it's finally available on CD. Both Gaughan and Irvine are fine singers and musicians with distinctive styles and voices. But Dick Gaughan's "Lads O' the Fair" remains one of my all-time favorite songs (maybe tied with Bruce Cockburn's "Wondering Where the Lions Are" for #1). Outstanding. If you're a Celtic music fan of any sort, get this CD. Now.

Product Description
SynC is Michael Atherton (ancient and contemporary acoustic instruments) and Garth Paine (electronics). Both musicians have extensive histories as composers, performers and academics. They have both published and performed original works internationally, and through SynC, are endeavouring to extend their compositional province to explore more fully the potential of a live acoustical and electronic ensemble. In so doing their investigations delve into contemporary approaches to musical Composition and Performance. Focusing on the interface between acoustic and electronic music, SynC is an experimental ensemble for acoustic instruments and live electronics, including the processing of live acoustic input, cross-synthesis and synthesis artefacts. This composition/performance collaboration seeks to contextualise ancient and modern musical languages within a single form. It does so by utilising ancient and contemporary acoustic musical instruments (e.g. oud, hurdy-gurdy, gongs, marimba, and percussion) as the sonic foundation for complex live electronic processes, which generate a vast array of timbral environments, responsive to the acoustic input, but simultaneously independent. This exploration seeks to re-contextualise the acoustic instruments, whilst also grounding the live electronic sounds within a rich musical heritage. This musical practice engages with discourse around notions of composition and performance, particularly, how these can be defined as potentials rather than as fixed inscriptions, and how within a computer music/software based environment, the notions of instrument, composition and performance become blurred and possibly take on new meaning. SynC also engages with new approaches to musical instruments focusing on electronic music and New Interfaces for Musical Expression. Drawing on the control apparent in acoustic instruments, this innovative approach to the integration of electronic and acoustic music is unusual, as the development of new instrument interfaces is usually driven from a technological rather than the player's perspective. This exploration is manifest in Garth Paine's use of a Wacom Drawing Table as a multi-dimensional control surface for live performance, allowing him to discard the constraints of the laptop musician, always hidden behind a screen, and take his place as a musician on the stage. Techniques for computer-driven percussion instruments that utilize Chaotic and Fractal patterning have been developed with Michael Atherton, and can be heard on track 4, Aletryomancy.
