Everybody Hates

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Third full length from popular English act Lovejoy and follow-up to the classic ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ album in 2002. Since then, Lovejoy has contributed tracks to several top indie compilations, released a 45 on fashionable UK label Unpopular Records, and played a handful of notable shows in England, Spain and Sweden. Expanding on the multilayered sound of previous releases with a refined mix of guitars, keyboards, and percussion plus irresistible melodies and exceptional harmonies, ‘Everybody Hates’ contains nine new Lovejoy compositions including the radio friendly hits ‘Sid Vicious’ and ‘Petrol Stars’ plus a sparkling cover of ‘Drug Autumn’ by Matinée labelmates The Windmills. Featuring literate songs peppered with commentary on the music business, relationships, politics and pop culture, ‘Everybody Hates’ is undoubtedly the strongest Lovejoy release yet.

Album Description

After releasing two albums with his band Icon Of Coil last year, and releasing an album by his side project Panzer AG, singer Andy LaPlegua doesn't sit idle. This is the result of his second side project, Combichrist. Icon Of Coil's same tedious programming, sequencing, and attention to detail are there, but Andy has taken a different musical approach. Aggressive EBM is grafted to power noise electronics with floor shattering beats, crunchy synths, catchy melodies, and plenty of well-placed samples.

5 out of 5 stars I mucho likey........2007-06-25

I used to despise the EBM takeover in the industrial scene. To be honest, coldwave and industrial metal are still my favorite styles of industrial music. However, I have grown to like EBM, and this is one of those bands that I consider to be good amongst the hords of EBM artist. I love the song "God Bless" that pays homage to serial killers, and of course the club hit "This Sh** Will F*** You Up". Combichrist are much more techno and trancey than early pioneers of EBM such as Front 242, and Leather Strip, but I still like the direction they went on this record dispite the techno heavy elements. I really can't say anything bad about this album now that I fully get the concept. If you don't like EBM I urge you to steer clear of this band...otherwise, I'm quite shure that you will love them.

1 out of 5 stars Put a tin can in a microwave and add poor vocals........2007-02-17

My title says it all. Combichrist is grossly unimaginative and untalented. Any two year old with a drum machine and a sampler can create this music (i'd know). Their vocals are cruddy and off tune. The only good thing about this band is the hot percussionist girl in the "Get Your Body Beat" video.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoy?.......2006-09-12

A friend of mine who suggested I get into the root of this type of music told me to get this album. She said they were "perfect."
1. Girls rate bands by how hot they think the singer is and I was a fool to let my guard down,
2. Never again will I listen to someone who DL's random songs from artists and tries to call them "perfect."
When I first got this album, I was a bit impressed but then it sank in and I though to myself "What the hell is this dude's problem?"
The lyircs are horrible. I'm sorry. The music is not really creative but not bad. I can't get past his accent. I personally perfer Panzer Ag's This is my Battlefield album, although the lyrics in that album are pretty stupid (i.e. "There is no hell/we are already here") They are not quite as retarded as Everybody Hates You. If you're looking for something to dance to this should suffice for the first few tracks, but I highly reccomend The Burn Process by TACTICAL SEKT.

5 out of 5 stars My first Combichrist cd.......2006-07-24

Being a big fan of Icon of Coil, I try to make an effort to check out Andy LePlegua's side projects. I have to admit I am not big on Panzer Ag. The music didn't really stood out with me but it did not stop me from checking out Combichrist. I recently bought the latest Combichrist cd "Everybody Hates You". I have to say that I enjoyed this much more than Panzer Ag's first cd. The cd starts off with the thunderous "This s*it Will Fcuk You Up". The fast paced beats were in your face and aggressive. The momentum continues with "Enjoy the Abuse". Combichrist is definitely more aggressive musically than Icon of Coil but they still maintain that same melodic sensibility. You can certainly hear it in "Today I Woke to the Rain of Blood". The lyrics are a lot darker than IoC's and Andy's vocals not so polished. Andy takes on a more aggressive approach when he sings. The momentum in the songs never dies down. The energy rages on through out the cd. After listening to "Everybody Hates You", I am excited I will be seeing the band live this fall when they hit the road with KMFDM.

5 out of 5 stars Terribly addicted rivethead! Can't Stop!.......2006-05-19

Stomp bang! Stomp bang! Argh! I love this album! It is completely addicting. It definitely has a large vibrating pulse to it with excellent well-crafted arrangements. I wouldn't call it "dancey" nor would I call it straight EBM. However it pulls from a lot of different electronik genres and is just hard, intense, abbrasive, yet very listenable. It's not just pure noize or anger either. It's really hard to describe in my opinion. But you can definitely stomp to it that's for sure. The first song is amazing! Who's your daddy Snakegirl? is also very good. I love the samples and all the computer voices on this album. It is rather conceptual imho. And if you don't like This is My Rifle, you don't have a pulse! When you listen to Enjoy the Abuse you'll know it because you'll be looking over your shoulder expecting Andy to start slapping you with a ruler as a terrorizing wall of sound hits you! HAHA! Enjoy the abuse and enjoy this album!

4 out of 5 stars Good but import not necessary.......2007-01-10

I was introduced to Combichrist when they toured locally with KMFDM. I took a buddy with me who new of KMFDM but did not now their music. Well to make a long story short, Combichrist smoked one of my long time favorite bands in live performance. We ended up spending time during KMFDM's set, hanging out with Combichrist. They were all cool as hell.

Following that I got on the Combichrist bandwagon buying albums and checking Andy's other projects. (Panzer AG, Icon of Coil) I even slapped a Combichrist sticker (taking up one square foot)on the back window of my 4runner.

So, where does this come in you ask. Everybody Hates you is one of the first albums of the three catalogs I bought, and still my favorite. Okay, so the lyrics are repetitious, but the beats are where it is at. This is a great album for those times when you feel amped or need to get pumped up. Why four stars? Well, I bought the import two disk version instead of the U.S. single disk release because I don't like to miss anything and like to spend twice as much for things (I guess). The first disc is same as the U.S. release but the second disc is purely instrumentals that I've only listened to once. I'll give it another try, but I'm not really into that kind of thing. If you are like me you'll get the import; however, having done so you may find, like me, that the Metropolis single disk version would have done you just fine.

Bottom line, the single disk, for what it is, I would give five stars to for a pure hard driving pump you up cadence value. Musically/lyrically, I'm sure there are those that will get all analitical (and I do mean anal) and put their 2 cents in. Take it to the gym, or down a slope, or whatever you are into, and enjoy it for what it is. You might find that it really does F you up.

My advise, save a little green and by the single disk Metropolis Records version. Add the second disc and I give it a bump downward to 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Appears to have most PAGAN studio hits of S St & Pink CD.......2006-02-02

Has 2 trax those 2 great albums on Crypt don't have: 'I Stand Alone' and 'Her Name Was Jane'. I haven't heard those two songs. Soon as I'm not lazy enough to hit the Listen button I will have sampled them. If you have the S... Street CD and the Pink Album Plus CD then you have, from what I can see, everything available by the PAGANS except these 2 songs on this CD.

Meanwhile, this stuff rocks, perfectly. I wish the PAGANS were better known. They somehow seem to have slipped under most of the radar screen, maybe cuz their 4 or so 7" records went out of print probably by 1980. They had most or all of them repressed in 1987 but not many copies, like 800 each.

They had Buried Alive and Street Where Nobody Lives and Pink Album LPs all get released apparently in the 80's gathering together their 7" studio recordings and scattered other songs.

The S... Street CD and Pink Album Plus CD have a few extra demo or other studio trax including a 1982 radio broadcast of a few songs on the Pink Album Plus. Both CD's also then have about 10 live trax, none of which is particularly amazing but are worth having because this band never released an album, only comps of their 7"s.

Musically if you hear them, particularly their best songs, which is most of the songs on the 7"s, you'll see they're really worth hearing, that is, assuming you like punk. Possibly America's finest punk (not hardcore) band ever. Really. chrisbct@hotmail.com
