Erasure Pop!: The First 20 Hits

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A singles band if ever there was one, the hits on Pop make the duo of Andy Bell and Vince Clarke of Erasure sound like the Rodgers & Hammerstein of synth-pop disco. With the exception of The Circus and The Innocents albums, most of Erasure's full lengths house only a few brief moments of brilliance, the rest of the songs being limp and uninspired. But putting songs like "Blue Savannah" with its sweeping loveliness, the haunting "Ship of Fools," and the campy, raucous "Love to Hate You" all on the same disc shows that when Erasure is on, they shine like a thousand-carat tiara. The energetic and electronic disco is front and center here with "Oh L'Amour" and the audience participation number "Stop!," but the beautifully crafted "Sometimes" shows the band's true potential. The irrepressible melody line is punctuated by an acoustic riff and a melancholy trumpet solo that actually has to do its best to keep up with Bell's warm lament. An indispensable collection. --Steve Gdula --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Synthesized Pop.......2001-04-08

Erasure were pioneers of British synthesizer music in the late 80's and early 90's and this release Pop covers their first six years and their 20 best hits along with the newest single at the time Who Needs Love Like That (Hamburg Mix). Erasure were basically the brainchild of synthesizer god Vince Clarke (previously of Depeche Mode and Yazoo) and had the amazing vocal talents of overenthusiastic vocalist Andy Bell who also dressed extremely strangely but this just drew more attntion to them. They started a little uncertainly with their first 3 singles failing to hit the UK Top 40 but then 80's classic Sometimes was released and the band soared to No2 in the chart. From here on success was almost guarenteed with every new single flying high in the chart but none went as high as Sometimes. They released classics such as A Little Respect, Stop!, Blue Savannah, Drama and my favourite Chorus. Considering what an amazing songwriter Vince was it was ironic that their only No 1 was cover versions of old Abba songs - the lead being Take A Chance On Me. Despite this Erasure had their own unique sound and many memorable singles and this '92 release highlights them at their best and they are still going today although not as successfully. Excellent 80's/90's British Pop!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate ERASURE compilation from 1985 to 1998. Yeeha!!.......2001-07-24

Whereas the English compilation "Pop!the first 20 hits" stops at 1992, this one is a double-CDs set which features 9 supplementary tracks, including the 8 singles (except "Rock me gently") released after 1992 until 1998 from the albums "I say I say I say" (1994), "Erasure" (1995) and "Cowboy" (1997). Of course, since 1998, ERASURE have released their 9th studio album "Loveboat" (2000) which isn't featured on this compilation. Meanwhile, this compilation remains the best one to this date . In addition, as a Japanese product, it will be an adorable exotic piece in your records collection, with its booklet written in Japanese caps. Thank you Mr Toshiba for this magical release!
