My Favorite Live Album Just Got Better.......2006-01-10

Big Country were one of the most under-appreciated bands of the last 25 years, and if you want proof of this, just pick up this excellent live album and see them at the top of their game.
Recorded in Glasgow, Scotland's Barrowlands Ballroom in front of a rabid hometown crowd, this concert shows a band that had been around long enough to give a very polished, professional rock & roll show, while still retaining the energy and passion that made their early concerts so memorable.

The first 10 tracks are acoustic performances, giving an earthy, authentic folk-rock feel to classics like "Chance", "Harvest Home", "13 Valleys", and "The Storm". The electric portion of the set kicks off in fine fashion with "All Go Together", while "Look Away", "Wonderland", and "Long Way Home" have never sounded better. Thankfully, this edition of the complete concert includes the unlisted, "spontaneous" performance of "Wild Mountain Thyme", a Scottish folk classic that sounds right at home in the hands Mr. Adamson and company.

If you think "In A Big Country" was the only good song this band ever recorded, this album will be a real eye-opener. And if you have the one-disc version of this album released in 1994, this full version is well worth having, if only for the jaw-dropping, six-minute-plus version of "Fields Of Fire".

The only drawback to this CD is the annoying, unnecessary copy-protection, but apart from that, it's an incredibly satisfying, invigorating live album.

The Ultimate Big Country.......2000-11-13

i have finally found the best live album ever recorded. Live Without The Aid of a Safety Net is simply amazing... evenly divided between acoustic and electric, the song selection is superb...reaching back to the glory days with an amazing acoustic rendition of Chance (The Crossing) to an unforgettable version of Steeltown (Steeltown)....to an explosive Look Away (The Seer). I'm tellin' you....everything on this album is fantastic...the crowd favorites are there, the full onslaught of Big Country sound is there, the subtle, powerful acoustic sets... You will not go wrong with this...Big Country fans of old, and Big Country fans of new alike....this is the CD that holds the key to the ultimate Big Country experience....go ahead listen to the samples before you buy it, but i'm tellin ya, this CD has not been out of my CD player since i got it...just wait until you hear "Just A Shadow"...amazing. Five stars? yeah right, try a "thousand stars"...

Five Stars (for Fans and Scots).......2000-09-18

This album is a healthy collection of acoustic and electric performances. Some songs are revealed here as obvious fan favourites based on the crowd participation. There isn't a stinker among them, so it comes highly recommended. Do check the samples here.

Those who are only familiar with their "In A Big Country" song, may be surprised by the rest of their material, so I don't know if it's a good intro to the band. I also recommend it though, because it gives an idea as to what good contemporary Scottish rock is all about. These are heart-felt, subtantial lyrical expressions presented to us, dealing with a variety of issues.

Acoustic to Electric -Best of.......2000-05-07

Without the Aid of a Safety Net is a GREAT album if you are looking to buy just one live BC album, all the hits are on the this cd, recorded at the Barrowlands, and the acoustic versions of Peace in Our Time and 13 Valleys will blow you away. It also contains a great edition of Chance! The album is packed all the way through, and ends with a thundering edition of Lost Patrol. If you like any Celtic Rock whatsoever, you must get this album. Also if you like Neil Young, you will love this album.

best live album of the 1990s.......1999-11-09

To find a recorded live performance by a rock band so equally fiery & visionary you have to go back to The Who's 1970 release, Live at Leeds. Big Country fuses it all: bluegrass, punk rock, new wave, traditional British rock, African and reggae rhythms, American blues, Celtic imagery. Don't miss this one -- half acoustic, the second half plugged in, all their greatest songs performed on their home turf at the Barrowlands, Glasgow, December of 1993.

Excellent live album........1999-01-12

This is an excellent live album by a group which should have been a huge sucess commercially but has been largely overlooked by the general public.
