Something/Everything!

Editorial Reviews

On Something/Everything, Wolf Colonel's humbly disingenuous and often hilarious singer-songwriter Jason Anderson asks: "Don’t you think we should kiss while the Hüsker Dü is playing?" What’s a girl to say? Anderson tops it off with the wry but earnest "Sophomore," melodious yet overlaid with fuzz. This chuckle-inducing knee-slapper lovingly portrays--and captures the mood of--a confused co-ed: "She threw away all her bras / Started listening to Was Not Was / The second album is her favorite / A double single in the dormitory--yeah!" Jangly and trebly, "Thinking About You" is another selection with wicked yet endearing lyrics. The album, however, is not all wonderfully sappy and infectious folk-pop full of infectious hooks. K Records prodigy Phil Elvrum (the Microphones, D+) produced parts of Something/Everything, and his influence is felt during introspective moments where a harp-like nylon-stringed, acoustic guitar is in evidence ("From Wisconsin:). Like the Microphones, Wolf Colonel play with varied genres, including post-rock ("That's My Life"), break beats ("Citizen's Arrest"), and lo-fi ("Break the News"). This romantic noise-pop experiment is fun and very, very sweet. --Jillian Steinberger

5 out of 5 stars Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02

Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"

2 out of 5 stars Unimpressive.......2006-03-11

I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.

4 out of 5 stars better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06

but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.

all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out

5 out of 5 stars Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17

Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).

I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!

(and read the liner notes, they're fun)

5 out of 5 stars Not your average white band.......2005-07-29

"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.

Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

3 out of 5 stars I found their music to be rather average and dull.......2006-03-22

The Good
Driving riffs and resonating licks set the pace for "Barricade the Doors." Vocalist Rob Tweedie has a good melodic tone without coming off too whiney. Tweedie mixes melody with emotional outbursts on the mid-tempo track "I Buried My Heart in Cosmo Part." "Folding and Unfolding" focuses more on vocals than instrumentation. "The Diamond Ring" has a nice flow to it with its smooth rhythm changes and slow building crescendo. The riffs get heavier and the licks get more prevalent on "The Ghosts of Who We Were."

The Bad
Adair can construct a decent song, but no matter how many times I listen to them, I just can't get into them. The lyrics tend to go over your head, and there's no repetition with the music.

The Verdict
Adair are a great bunch of guys and are passionate about what they do. Unfortunately, I found their music to be rather average and dull.

5 out of 5 stars Long awaited.......2006-03-03

I have been waiting for this album since I saw the band at a Story of the Year concert almost two years ago. I bought their 5 song album at the show and loved it. I got this cd and it is fantastic. Each song has a unique sound and the vocals are different with every song as well. I feel that they will become one of the more popular underground rock bands out there within a few years.

5 out of 5 stars this album is the beginning of something big for adair.......2006-02-24

adair is not neccessarily a new name to me. i've been to story of the year concerts and they've always mentioned great things about a band from st. louis called "adair". not having a label behind them, i didn't get a chance to hear anything from them. Then i heard they got signed to warcon and had an album coming out. So i blindly went out and bought it without hearing any of their songs, just going off of the hype soty was giving them. Soty was right! this band is very talented and their music just plain rocks!

along with greeley estates, adair is the only other "new" screamo band that brings something fresh-sounding to an overcrowded scene in 2006. not only is the music great and catchy, the guy can really sing. the lyrics at times can be lame emo lyrics but mostly straight-forward and meaningful. if you like bands like soty, and the used then you'll most definitley dig adair. i'm sure these guys will get noticed soon and will definitley be on my top 25 list of 2006. check these guys out...

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of Something new is ADAIR's fresh take on rock!.......2006-02-22

It's been a long time since a band has emerged from the world of black t-shirts and spiky hair with a sound as original as ADAIR's "The Destruction of Everything Is the Beginning of Something New".

Each song has it's own unique story to tell and ADAIR puts them all together to create an epic album that you'll be singing in your sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Light hearted, fun, poignant, charming. Highly recommend........1999-04-01

Including songs from the light hearted and fun to the poignant, this CD is a treasure that should not be missed by those loving the classic Broadway musical sound. Two voices (Karen Ziemba, currently Roxie Hart in Chicago, and David Garrison, currently in Titanic) and a Steinway piano partner in this recording, and the blend of Ziemba's and Garrison's voices is perfect. The versatility of Ziemba's voice throughout this recording is most impressive, In addition to being an extraordinary dancer, Ziemba once again proves herself an exceptional singer. Garrison is terrific as well. If you like "darker" musicals, avoid this. But if you want to hear an up-tempo musical score that will make you tap your toes and if you want to hear two voices that can be listened to again and again with the same initial pleasure, get this recording.

5 out of 5 stars One more beautiful soundtrack by Alfred Newman with bonus Johnny Mathis.......2007-01-04

Though one may not recognize `The Best of Everything' as one of those best of the best among the Hollywood films, there is something different here and it's simply the original soundtrack by the late Alfred Newman.

One of those soundtrack craftsmen, the king of `leitmotif', Mr. Newman proves once more his inspiration and technique in what may be related to music for films.

Interesting to feature the beautiful Johnny Mathis rendition for the main title, which became a smash hit single for Mathis in 1959. This CD offers two versions by Mathis, including a rare single version.
