Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' 25-cut disc is the single most impressive one of Motown's Ultimate Collection series (which features 17 artists). Combining Smokey's endlessly inventive twists on romance (good and bad) with the Miracles' handful of straight-up party hits, it showcases one of American pop's most sure-footed and touching acts. The frontman's prowess as singer, writer, and producer lights up each of these single mixes; less-celebrated tracks like "My Girl Has Gone," "(You Can) Depend on Me," and "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" stand as tall as the many oldies-radio staples featured here. (For much more, including "Mirage's" unstoppable flip side, "Come Spy with Me," check out the four-disc 35th Anniversary box set.) Robinson and his collaborators, both in and out of the group, regularly injected undeniable emotion into their creamy constructions, making for a stack of tracks that remain as relevant as the contemporary creations of fans Lennon-McCartney and Bob Dylan. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Smokin.......2007-07-24
This is a good collection of Smokey Robinson tunes, a good Motown sound record. Smokey's voice is great. This is a long CD, over one hour, with 25 tunes, so fans will get their money's worth from this CD. For me the CD is an enjoyable listen. It's just not the genre I'm particularly into, so I gave it 4 stars. Fans of the 60s Motown stuff might consider it a 5 though. My favs:
Second That Emotion
Tears of a Clown
Tracks of My Tears
Ours Is An Age Of Miracles.......2007-01-08
So you find a 10-spot on the street. Whatever will you do with it? Bribe a Congressman? Take it to your local greasy spoon for a hearty bowl of squirrel surprise, and a slice of the meringue pie you've been eyeing for months as it circled in its rotating glass case? Maybe skip down to the spirits store and pick up a bottle of Chateau Wallaby, ignoring the warning label which clearly states, "Caution: Consuming this product may cause nausea, dizziness, and an intense desire to burst into tears."
Or, you could buy this CD. (Highly recommended).
No R&B/soul collection would be complete without Smokey represented, and this exceptional Best Of anthology represents him admirably. At 25 cuts deep, it is virtually exploding with content, replete with must-have classics and unfamiliar gems. Like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, Robinson's voice evokes a visceral, emotional response. It has, of course, an ethereal beauty that sounds more suited to heaven than earth. The precision of the back-up harmonies and arrangements makes for an effect that is uniformly appealing, and genuine. This music is never overtly clever or self-conscious - it is masterfully crafted and sincere.
The generation doomed to endure hip-hop and rap would do well to take this CD out for a test drive, if only to discover that there was once music both pleasing to the ear and nourishing to the soul. Smokey spoke to women in a language that made them melt, a language men strained to learn and understand. Put on "I'll Try Something New." In 2:36, Robinson evokes the sentiments of romantic love in a way that is nothing short of transcendent.
Very good recording and music.......2007-01-05
What can I say: It is Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Who can say anything bad about this?
Wonderful.......2006-11-10
It really brought back memories of watching Smokey Robinson and the Miracles back in the day.
Love Smokey more than his tenure with the Miracles.......2006-08-25
The first time we listened to this alblum we were a bit dissapointed. I guess we are Smokey fans. We love his voice.
The earlier songs on the alblum came from his days with the Miracles. It was good for us , but not great. The second half of the alblum highlighted Smokey and we really enjoyed it. Hey 25 songs for this price. Who can complain.

Add Smokey Robinson to the list of sophisticated crooners sidestepping the race to rack up songwriter credits in favor of revisiting standards. Don't add him to the list of well-loved pop statesmen willing to let a team of backing musicians do the heavy lifting, though. With Timeless Love, Smokey situates himself in a candle-lit lounge of the mind: these may be other artists' songs, but he sketches in the details with the very stuff of his soul. Which, as anybody who's ever sung along to "The Tracks of My Tears" knows, is leagues more potent than most. Heart-stabbingly so. In Frank Sinatra's quite capable hands, for example, "Fly Me to the Moon" is a bawdy, puff-chested romp; in Smokey's it's a tender celebration of blinding love (ditto for "I've Got You Under My Skin"). Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," meanwhile, becomes less brooding and more pleading as he ups the romantic balladeer quotient--there's something in the twists and turns of that gorgeous, trembling tenor. While Smokey, at 67, is still able to run vocal circles around many of the artists more closely associated with these numbers, it's with his own song, "I Love Your Face," that he threatens to do the most damage to the already weak-kneed. Couples in black tie might have been swirling around him as he recorded this disc: dim the lights and sway accordingly. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Sets it's own standard..........2007-06-11
This does not play well as background music. You simply want to stop and listen to every note.
I have other versions of these classics, including recordings by Sinatra and Torme as well as others, and I appreciate their ability to evoke specific feelings of time and place with their versions of these durable standards. Smokey's own interpretations are personal, intimate and romantic. You can tell that he wants to sing these songs, that they have somehow touched him deeply and he wants to tell their stories in his own voice. His versions have the ability to fire your imagination with romantic notions.
I was initially reluctant to purchase this recording based on other reviews, but find that now that I have, I reach for it again and again.
Smokey's version of the classics really doesn't need comparison to anyone else's interpretations of these timeless jewels, his is unique and beautiful in its own right.
Not even a good attempt........2007-04-11
When will artist realize you can't change the old classics. The only successfull R&B group to sing the classic "Night and day" to their own beat was the Temptations CD "What women want" the best rendition I have ever heard. Smokey does have the voice for these kinds of songs. Another good CD with classics is Willie Nelson's Stardust.
Smokey is Timeless yet misplaced.......2007-04-01
Smokey's voice is exquisitely, melodiously, beautiful, but I did not enjoy listening to him sing songs I associate with other artists especially Frank Sinatra. I now know I only enjoy Smokey singing his signature songs from my past, just like he did in the 2006 concert of his that I attended. Had I listened to any of the cuts before purchasing the CD, I would not have purchased it.
The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!.......2007-03-18
I've been a Smokey fan for most of my life and I truly appreciate the genius of both the man and his music. I expected this CD to be good because over the years, I have learned to expect nothing less from him. However, the word "good" doesn't even come close to describing the experience of listening to this music. It's an incredible compilation of songs to which he lends his special touch and the result is truly amazing. I have often thought after listening to one of his songs that he can't possibly get any better, but Smokey continues to deliver music that touches the heart, the mind and the spirit in a way that others can only aspire to achieve.
Beautiful.......2007-01-10
Smokey sings the standards with a pleasant and slight difference. All the cuts are so very good, the very best being "I Love Your Face".

As good as Pomus and Gordy were, they can't compare with the premier rock & roll songwriters of the pre-Beatles era: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Chuck Berry, and Percy Mayfield. The team of Leiber (the lyricist) and Stoller (the composer) created such enduring standards as "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," "Spanish Harlem," "Jailhouse Rock," and many more. Those songs and 33 more were assembled into a bookless Broadway musical called Smokey Joe's Cafe, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards. If this soundtrack album is any indication, the show was an abomination, an act of self-betrayal by Leiber and Stoller, who not only participated in putting the show together but also co-produced the album with Arif Mardin. Instead of remaining true to the songs' rock & roll roots, the soundtrack producers have allowed the obscure stage performers to commit Broadway's worst sins: excessive earnestness, undernourished rhythms, and bombastic over-singing. Everyone in the cast has a good singing voice, but no one has a distinctive musical personality. Michael Park's Presley parody on "Jailhouse Rock," B.J. Crosby's confusion of vocal power for vocal attitude on "Hound Dog," and Victor Trent Cook's syrupy version of "I (Who Have Nothing)" prove Broadway chorus dancers are no substitute for real rock & roll singers. --Geoffrey Himes

Smokey Joe's Cafe.......2007-01-24
Smokey Joe's Cafe is an execellent Broadway play and the musical soundtrack is great listening. The songs of Leiber and Stoller bring back memories of the 50 and 60's. The songs are classics that last for all time.
THE BEST.......2006-04-02
Wow, they can dance AND sing! When the blond does the shimmy my heart stops. Like to crack an egg on her a**
competing dances.......2005-08-06
I think this is a cd with great selection of good music. It has great musioc for solo and duo and even small and large group songs for competion. dance competions!!!!!
Fabulous.......2004-11-25
I'm in High School, and we've performed Smokey Joe's Cafe 3 times already as a One-Act Play. I have to say that this is just an amazing show! Not only are kids our age into it but the older people are grooving with us too!
People just go estatic when you perform memorable songs, like "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog". And it's always great to hear people humming or singing to themselves "Poison Ivy" and "Kansas City".
These are classic and timeless songs that will never pass out of existence.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

WHERE'S THE MIRACLES DVD ?.......2006-10-01
I have only one GRIPE with this collection .... ONLY ONE...but it's a SERIOUS ONE..About the time this collection was introduced... a companion DVD WAS TO APPEAR... It was to be a CAREER SPANING VIDEO COLLECTION OF CLASSIC FOOTAGE OF SMOKEY'S HITS WITH THE LEGENDARY MIRACLES along with some of his SOLO HITS...LITERALLY THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF "MOTOWN DEFINITIVE" DVD COLLECTIONS OF ITS TOP ARTISTS .... BUT IT NEVER APPEARED !!!! IT WAS ADVERTISED ALL OVER THE INTERNET , AND EVEN IN THE RECORD STORES ...BUT STILL... NO DVD !! SINCE THEN ,MOTOWN "DEFINITIVE DVD COLLECTIONS" OF MARVIN GAYE AND THE TEMPTATIONS HAVE APPEARED ...BUT STILL N O M I R A C L E S !!! So,ONCE AGAIN, fans of this legendary group have been DISAPPOINTED..First by their INEXCUSABLE OMISSION from the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME (only SMOKEY was inducted} , and NOW THIS !! SO MOTOWN , AND UNIVERSAL....WHERES THE MIRACLES DVD ??
What a legend @}->---.......2006-04-30
Smokey Ronbinson is one of the first artists that I fell in love with when I first started listening to Motown. He's so incredibly talented and legendary and no wonder why when you look at this collection and remember just how many hits he's had. And they are pretty much all here. It's almost impossible to pick a couple of favourites as they are all good, but if I absolutely had to, I'd say the best songs are Mickey's Monkey, Being With You, The Tracks Of My Tears and I Second That Emotion. There are still so many songs that I left of that list, but that's because he's barely made a bad song. He is a legend and this is a great start for new fans of his, or for his old fans to reminise over. I love it.
Can't miss.......2006-03-11
You won't be dissapointed with the Definitive Collection. Great sound and brings back memories. Enjoyable with established fans and new ears. It was good to hear the sweet sounds of Smokey once again. Love "Ooo Baby Baby" and "Mickey's Monkey". Worth the money and great addition to any collection!!
Not as good as it could have been.......2005-08-10
While the material here is mostly 5-star, this compilation is not as complete as it should be. While the obvious hits are all here - "Cruisin," "Tracks of My Tears," "Being With You," etc., I would like to have had "Baby Baby Don't Cry," "If You Can Want," and "I'll Try Something New" from the Miracles and the solo "Agony and the Ecstasy." These are all better than the two new songs, and several others included here, including "Yester Love" and "I've Made Love to You a Thousand Times" really aren't from the cream of the crop. Plus only 74 minutes - enough room left for two more Miracles tracks. The sound quality and liner notes are good, and I am glad that the complete, "R-rated" album version of "Cruisin" was included. This is good enough for the casual fan, but, for those wanting the whole picture, the two-disc compilations of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and Smokey solo are better.
Grand new collection from the man who has been dubbed "America's poet"........2005-07-09
Smokey Robinson was a fixture on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart for nearly three decades. He is also widely regarded as one of America's greatest songwriters. "My World: The Definitive Collection" offers a fine overview of the career of this multi-talented and legendary performer. Enjoy once again several of his 1960's hits with the Miracles including Motown's very first hit single "Shop Around" as well as the 1967 smash "More Love". Among the other Miracles tunes included on this disc are "Going To A-Go-Go", "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and Smokey's most popular song of all-time "The Tears of A Clown". Kudos to the engineers for an outstanding remastering job! Each and every track on this disc is crystal clear and this will add to your enjoyment of Smokey's inimitable falsetto voice.
But this treasure trove of hits also includes several of Smokey's biggest solo recordings from the 1970's and 1980's. "Quiet Storm" and "Cruisin" are fine examples of Smokey's work in the 1970's. Smokey Robinson's popularity would soar in the 1980's with three Top 10 hits. "Being With You", "Just To See Her" and "One Heartbeat" are all included in "My World: The Definitive Collection".
I was quite excited to discover that Smokey Robinson recorded two brand new tunes for this collection. I have sampled both "My World" and "Fallin'" a number of times and to be honest with you neither tune excites me. Perhaps they will grow on me with time but the old magic just does not seem to be there.
Nevertheless, the great remastering job coupled with the inclusion of tunes from both his days with the Miracles and his own solo career makes "My World: The Definitive Collection" a winner. This is a solid four star offering. Recommended.

Everything He Touched.......2006-12-28
These days, there are just so many classic acts of the Motown era that've been all but forgotten, in favor of soul wannabe acts like Ciara, Ashanti, and Ruben Studdard from American Idol that just don't have the appeal of the classic days of soul that were just astonishing. That happened long ago, especially with Smokey Robinson. Even though he hasn't scored a hit record in years, the soulfulness he has made for so many eras of lovers has not lost its edge. The songs still are just delightful to listen to. Now, another hits record has surfaced that shines so bright on one of the most classic singers of all time.
The 2006 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Gold, is a nearly definitive, and well-conjured hits record that showcases Smokey, and 40 of his biggest hits on his own, and with his defiant era as a part of The Miracles. The Motown classics here have all be restored very well, and bring out the best songs in a longtime. The album includes great classics like Tears Of A Clown, the somber Tracks Of My Tears, Ooh Baby Baby, Shop Around, and many other classics. The collection also delivers brightly with Smokey on his solo efforts, a little better than last year's My World: Definitive Collection on songs like Let Me Be The Clock, Crusin', the #1 R&B soul hit Being With You, and Just To See Her. Sadly though, the collection overlooks a few great tracks from Smokey's solo efforts like I Must Have Made Love To You A Thousand Times, and his 1990 #2 hit Everything You Touch.
All in all, despite a few overlooked songs, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Gold is a delightful reintroduction to one of the most soulful songers, and classic Motown groups of all time. If you love some of the classic era Motown than this is a must buy for you, as well as die hard Smokey Robinson fans. If you haven't heard any of these classics before, than I also suggest this great buy, just to hear him again.

Smokey's Definitive CD.......2006-08-17
If you are looking for a definitive CD with the majority of the tracks in true living stereo, this is the one. Of all of the collections, this is his best effort. Not only do you get the best from Smokey & the Miracles, but you also get Smokey as an individual. This is one of the only CDs that has THE Best Stereo version of I Don't Blame You At All. There is no filler here. Pure great Soul music from the 60's. The only two hits missing are Do It and Love Machine by just the Miracles. Otherwise, for the first time listener or for the veteran fan, this is the CD to purchase. Great sound, production, stereo, and that magic voice of Smokey. This is a winner. Pure Gold!

Defining a sound..........2007-01-22
...just like he did at the beginning of Motown. Now here he his, just like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, going beyond the pop success for a new sound, new direction, new motivations. Marvin & Stevie went their way; and "Quiet Storm" was Smokey's way.
His way was smoother, more gentler, never one to ruffle feathers like Marvin or Stevie did with their songs. That's why Smokey is the genius he is; he didn't try to do anyone else's style but his own.
The album is quintessential Smokey...his same songwriting formula he has used for decades. You can imagine that if this were the mid 60s, these tracks would sound something like "Track of My Tears" or "Ooh Baby Baby". The melodies and rhythms simply reflect what the 70s were about, using "non-native" instruments (latin percussions/rhythms), funkier beats and bass lines, and non-standard rhythms and times. Smokey is a master songwriter, always keeping his ear to what's hip, and that what "Baby That's Back Atcha" is; hip, funky, and totally Smokey. "The Agony and the Ecstasy" is old-school Smokey and those from all the 'hoods and barrios include this in their Oldies mixes (how 'bout that opening line? Vintage Smokey hooking you into the song). And the title track itself started a whole new sub-genre of R&B music...can you think of another song that has done that? Nothing more need be said.
He will be considered in the future one of the 20th century's greatest American songwriters, up there with Cole Porter, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen. This album simply reaffirms what many already know.
Quiet Storm.......2005-10-20
I was 16 when this album came out, I would just play the "Quiet Storm" side over and over (and over) again. As with most of the reviewers have stated, William "Smokey" Robinson has got to be one of the most underrated Songwriters/Singer's on the planet. As on this collection of songs, Smokey runs the vibe hot, warm and cool (note that I never said "cold!") That, if possible is a description of the album "Quiet Storm." Five stars!
A Timeless Classic .......2005-07-16
Only these words could truly describe this album-Flawless, beautiful, and mesmerizing. A true classic! One of my personal favorites.
A Quiet Storm Blowing.......2005-06-12
Last night after midnight I put this album on and listened to it from beginning to end-all seven cuts and WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!The songs are all breaklessly linked by the sound of a light breeze,as if the songs are carried on the wind. The first three-the miraculous title song,"The Agony And The Ecstacy" and the more rhythmic "Baby That's Backatcha'" and "Wedding Song" just flow together as one long anthem of mature romance, set to some of the most lovely, stripped down bass and fender rhodes work I've heard.
After an awe inspiring rendering of "Happy" Smokey lays down a couple uptempo tunes in "Love Letters" and "Coincidentally",both of which have tight funky arrangements
and great Minimoog riffing. But despite the groove the overall emmotional vibe is always mellow and romantic. It is late night music of the first order, powered by one of R&B's most expressive
voices and most poetic lyricist. And this album is packed to the top with both. What is bothersome is that this 1975 recording is usually never listed alongside other classic albums of this genre during the period such as 'Hot Buttered Soul','What's Going On','Talking Book','Extentions Of A Man',etc.
'Quiet Storm' not only belongs there but quite significantly so and (honestly) it deserves one of those 2 CD 20'th Century Masters reissues EMMEDIATELY!It's definately Smokey Robinson's most powerful and influencial solo album and seems to never get the credit,or listeners due it.But take my word and that of pretty much everyone here-this album will captivate you upon the first listen and will certainly do much to swoon your sweetheart and yourself into pure musical romance.
And besides how many albums can be credited with starting a whole spesific genre of music anyway?
Smokey's Best album ever. IT REALLY RULES .......2005-04-19
Growing up in the Bronx NYC back in the day, My Mother wore this album to death (And to this day 30 years later she still has it and still plays it). Smokey was indeed the man back in the day, this album really delivers everything the one cut that I really love is "The Wedding Song" he composed this song in December 1973 for the wedding of Jermaine (Of the Jackson 5) & Hazel Joy Jackson (Daughter of Motown Founder Berry Gordy). Your music library is not complete unless you have this timeless classic THIS IS REAL MUSIC

The Temptations Sing Smokey leans heavily on a great soul-music tradition: the practice of Motown artists' covering each other's hits as album tracks. Not that the Temptations' versions of Smokey Robinson-penned Miracles and Mary Wells singles qualify as filler. Hardly, as Eddie Kendricks's falsetto makes a convincing stand-in for Robinson's on remakes of "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and "What's So Good About Good Bye." Many of these tracks also underscore the strong doo-wop roots at the core of the Temptations' style, none more so than "Baby, Baby I Need You," which barely bothers to update its '50s influences for mid-'60s ears. This minor gem comes complete with three hit singles in "My Girl," "The Way You Do the Things You Do," and "It's Growing." --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
A must have .......2006-12-15
If you are a fan of the early Temptations, this is a must have. The tracks are all the early songs, written by fellow Motown legend William "Smokey" Robinson that made them icons.
It the tempts what's not to love????.......2006-09-14
I love this Lp. The tempts vocals are crazy on this Lp. Especially their harmonies on: The Way You Do The Things You Do (Eddie's voice on this record is incredible and the harmonies are perfect!)Baby, Baby I Need You (Eddie and Paul simply beautiful! Paul's voice is incredible on the part where he sings "You knew my lips were longing for the kisses you could give to me Ever since the 1st day babe that we met" Whoo! That man could serenade me anytime!)My Girl, You'll Lose A Precious Love, It's Growing, Who's Lovin' You (David: Effortless Perfection! I love his accent on It's Growing!) You've Really Got A Hold On Me (I think it's even better than the Miracles' version Don't kill me yall) Just my opinion. Get this Lp. You will no tbe disappointed!
A Most Bodacious Release.......2006-03-09
This was their second release and it seems Motown wasn't too sure of its pull so they tacked 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' from their first album 'Meet The Temptations' for some insurance.
Well, they needn't.
This is probably The Tempts most consistant recording and it belongs to Eddie since he sings lead on the majority of songs.
I always tell folk who think David Ruffin 'made' the group to listen to their ALBUMS and they'll get a vastly different perspective from just listening to compilations.
Anyway the fellas are in full bloom here, with 'What Love Has Joined Together' being just one example.
There's a warning about knowing who's heart to mess with ('You'll Lose A Precious Love') and the a-ha! of not letting the one you love play you too close ( 'You Beat Me To The Punch ').
All the songs are written and/or co-wrote by William ( "Smokey")
Robinson one of the best poets/songwriters of all-time IMO.
Not only are the songs and performances superb ( my ex claims Eddie sounds like he has a cold on 'What's So Good About Goodbye' ), but the recording is also on point.
Who is that warbling in the near background during Eddie's solo on 'Baby, Baby I Need You'?
Yes indeed their Doo Wop roots are in full effect here ( '(You Can) Depend On Me'), but so are their sanctified gospel ('Way Over There') and blues ( Who's Loving You') legacies also.
They manage to fuse these ( along with R n' B) into a unique yet recognizable form and style that can may be described as The Temptation Walk ( the name of a dance and tribute record from the early '60's, y'all remember?).
Pay attention to how the Tempts both compliment and challenge Paul's lead on 'You Beat Me To The Punch'.
If I had to pick ONE Tempts release this would be it and its certainly a "Desert Island Pick" IMHO
What else can be said about a joint where 'My Girl' is NOT the best song?
The only negative is:
the cover photo
(them with their processes with Paul on lead)
isn't available as a wall poster!!
Soaring with memories........2005-09-22
The sweet soaring melodies of smokey Robinson and the stellar peforamnce of the Temptations makes the most jaded listen sing with the CD.
A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN.......2004-12-24
A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE WRITER OF ALL TIME FROM THE VOICES OF ALL TIME. BOTH SMOKEY ROBINSON AND THE TEMPS WERE TO GO DOWN IN HISTORY (UNBEKNOWN TO THEM AT THAT TIME). THEIR DESTINY WAS WRITTEN IN THE STARS HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO AND THIS ALBUM BROUGHT BOTH OF THEIR PLACES IN THE HEAVENS TO PASS. IT WAS BREATH TAKING TO SEE THEM PUT IT ON TAPE IN THE STUDIO.

could have used more original 45s.......2007-02-25
the inclusion of "would i love you" on this cd is great as it was never available on an LP, except for the "In the beginning" anthology from the late 60's. the inclusion of this song was great, but whoever was doing the picking, picked the wrong one. this is not the original "would i love you", but is an alternate take. the original is much better. too bad they did not include that. the remainder of the cd is great.
THE MIRACLES..MOTOWN'S GREATEST GROUP, PERIOD !!.......2006-06-12
I dont care what others say about The Supremes,Temptations, or other Motown groups, the MIRACLES were the greatest group to ever come out of Motown.PERIOD!! Why ? for one thing, they were the FIRST MOTOWN GROUP.It was their success that paved the way for all the others. Had they not been successful, there would have been NO MOTOWN,and none of those other groups would have even found fame ,or at least not to the extent which they did. They also had Motown's first million-selling record "Shop Around".THE MIRACLES put MOTOWN on the map. During the company's critical early years- 1959-1964- they were BY FAR Motowns TOP GROUP,(despite what certain reviewers have written},with top 10 pop hits in '1961,'62,AND' 63, the STAR ATTRACTION of the legendary MOTORTOWN REVUES,and the ONLY group that was bringing any serious money into the company!! By 1964, the year that the SUPREMES, TEMPTATIONS, AND THE FOUR TOPS had their 1st hits, THE MIRACLES had released their 1ST DOUBLE ALBUM of GREATEST HITS !! Yet, while all these other Motown groups have been inducted ,AS GROUPS, into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, The MIRACLES have been ignored. They chose to induct only Smokey. What a shame and insult to MOTOWN'S legendary First Group. The TEMPTATIONS ? great singers and dancers to be sure, but what most Temptations fans WON'T tell you is that 9 of their first 12 hits were actually written by The MIRACLES !! not just Smokey,THE WHOLE GROUP !! Don't believe it ? just look at the writing credits on the Tempts GREATEST HITS album !(How many MIRACLES songs did the TEMPTATIONS WRITE ? think about it}. THE SUPREMES ? They wouldn't have even GOTTEN on Motown if not for Smokey !!Stevie Wonder? He was discovered by Miracles member RONNIE WHITE !! THE MARVELETTES,MARVIN GAYE & MARY WELLS ?Yep, they wrote their stuff too.The MIRACLES were responsible, either directly or indirectly, for the success of just about EVERY EARLY ARTIST ON THE MOTOWN LABEL!! In fact ,of the five leading Motown groups ( Supremes, Temptations,4 tops,Miracles,J-5 }The MIRACLES were the ONLY ones that wrote their own material. Hopefully one day ,the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME will induct them ALL-SMOKEY, BOBBY,RONNIE, PETE, MARV & CLAUDETTE ,not just SMOKEY , as they did.Want to know why they deserve it? Just listen to this CD.Then, read the writing credits. It will prove that SMOKEY wasn't the ONLY serious talent in this group.
Best overview to date.......2005-09-25
This generous 52-track compilation is a pretty definitive overview of the Miracles recording career in terms of singles releases, as all the A-sides are here (with the exception of a couple of early pre-Tamla, non-Top 100 sides), as well as 11 B-sides, one of which, Would I Love You? from 1964, seems not to have been on any original album. Their early Chess single (as the Matadors), Got A Job, an answer record to the Silhouettes' Get A Job, was produced by Berry Gordy and its local success led to the eventual formation of the famous Motown label, so its inclusion here (unfortunately in mono) is highly warranted. Three of the singles are in the slightly-longer LP versions - no bad thing at all, but the inclusion of the 1963 live version of I've Been Good To You in preference to the version from I'll Try Something New that was the B-side of What's So Good About Goodbye is perhaps more questionable.
Although the first 8 tracks are in mono, the rest are in stereo and it is a delight to discover that tracks 9-24 on disc 1 appear in previously unreleased stereo mixes. To hear old classic favourites like You've Really Got A Hold On Me and Mickey's Monkey in stereophonic glory for he first time is like discovering them afresh. The separation of guitars, horns and voices adds so much to the sound picture.
The first disc, which is over 80 minutes long, is especially strong and causes one to want to dig out the original albums. The overall descent into schmaltz and blandness on the second disc is offset by some key returns to form, notably on Abraham Martin And John, The Tears Of A Clown (US Single Remix) and I Don't Blame You At All. Sadly, by the time of We've Come Too Far To End It Now, Smokey Robinson had come too far not to end it then
This is IT! The best Smokey Robinson & the Miracles collection available........2005-09-22
On 2 cd's Motown has finally put together a recent collection/anthology that is worthy of praise and it is this one. The songs go all the way back to 1959-60 when the Miracles recorded for Chess and End Records prior to Motown. Motown hit the sonic jackpot when they took the earliest STEREO masters and pressed them that way with 20 or 24 bit remastering. Forget about that big MONO Miracles box as well as all of the Miracles previous anthologies. This collection is the real deal.
A nice overview.......2004-05-14
Smokey Robinson really had a way with words, what a gifted guy this was. Listening to his work you can really understand why people see him as a great poet. This is a long two disc Motown set of The Miracles, and it covers their early work right to the end in 1970 when Smokey went solo. I always loved that ole 60s Motown sound and its sweet listening to this set, remembering how R&B used to sound. So many classic jams on this album, and a lot of stuff you probably wont have heard before. Cuts like 'I Second That Emotion' and 'Tears Of A Clown' will always be timeless.
With so much material on here this album is worth the price, Smokey is an all time great artist, and his work shines here. He never was as important solo as his label mates Marvin and Stevie but he had a lot of talent. Essential for people who can't get enough of that old Motown stuff like Temptations, Four Tops, The Supremes, what a label.
